Welding work is a production work method widely used throughout the industry, and various types of welding technologies exist. In addition, many methods are being studied to automate these welding operations using robots, but in the ship manufacturing field, welding such as painting, cutting, and grinding is also the most common operation, but the manual operation ratio is higher than in other industries. Such a high manual labor ratio in the field of ship manufacturing not only causes quality problems and production delays according to the skill of workers, but also causes problems in the supply and demand of manpower. Therefore, this paper analyzed the reason why the automation rate is low in welding work at ship manufacturing sites compared to other industries, and analyzed the production process and field environment for small and medium-sized ship manufacturing companies that repeatedly manufactured with a small quantity production method. Based on the analysis results, it is intended to propose a robot system that can easily move between workplaces and secure uniform welding quality and productivity by collaborating simple welding tasks with humans. Finally, the simulation environment is constructed and analyzed to secure the suitability of robot system application to current production site environment, work process, and productivity, rather than to develop and apply the proposed robot system. Through such pre-simulation and robot system suitability analysis, it is expected to reduce trial and error that may occur in actual field installation and operation, and to improve the possibility of robot application and positive perception of robot system at ship manufacturing sites.
This paper discusses the method of vision based sensor fusion system for biped robot walking. Most researches on biped walking robot have mostly focused on walking algorithm itself. However, developing vision systems for biped walking robot is an important and urgent issue since biped walking robots are ultimately developed not only for researches but to be utilized in real life. In the research, systems for environment recognition and tole-operation have been developed for task assignment and execution of biped robot as well as for human robot interaction (HRI) system. For carrying out certain tasks, an object tracking system using modified optical flow algorithm and obstacle recognition system using enhanced template matching and hierarchical support vector machine algorithm by wireless vision camera are implemented with sensor fusion system using other sensors installed in a biped walking robot. Also systems for robot manipulating and communication with user have been developed for robot.

For successful implementation of robotic painting system, a structured design and analysis procedure is necessary. In designing robotic system, both functional and economical feasibility should be investigated. As the robotization is complicated task involving implementation details(such as robot selection, accessory design, and spatial layout) together with operation details, a computerized method should be sought. However, any conventional robotic design system and off-line programming system cannot accomodate such a need. In this research, we develop an interactive design support system for robotization of a cycle painting line. With the developed system called SPRPL(Simulation Package for Robotic Painting Line) users can design the painting objects(via FRAME module), select robot model (ROBOT), design the part hanger (FEEDER), and arrange the workcell. After motion programming (MOTION), the design is evaluated in terms of: a) workspace analysis, b) coating thickness analysis, and c) cycle time (ANALYSIS). By iterative design and evaluation procedure, a feasible and efficient robotic design can be attained. As the developed system has motion planning and analysis features, it can be also used as an off-line robot programming system in operation stage. Including the details of each module, this paper also presents a case study made for an actual painting line.
Though the final goal of mobile robot navigation is to be autonomous, operators' intelligent and skillful decisions are necessary when there are many scattered obstacles. There are several limitations even in the camera-based tele-operation of a mobile robot, which is very popular for the mobile robot navigation. For examples, shadowed and curved areas cannot be viewed using a narrow view-angle camera, especially in bad weather such as on snowy or rainy days. Therefore, it is necessary to have other sensory information for reliable tele-operations. In this paper, sixteen ultrasonic sensors are attached around a mobile robot in a ring pattern to measure the distances to obstacles. A collision vector is introduced in this paper as a new tool for obstacle avoidance, which is defined as a normal vector from an obstacle to the mobile robot. Based on this collision vector, a virtual reflection force is generated to avoid the obstacles and then the reflection force is transferred to an operator who is holding a joystick to control the mobile robot. Relying on the reflection force, the operator can control the mobile robot more smoothly and safely. For this bi-directional tele-operation, a master joystick system using a hall sensor was designed to resolve the existence of nonlinear sections, which are usual for a general joystick with two motors and potentiometers. Finally, the efficiency of a force reflection joystick is verified through the comparison of two vision-based tele-operation experiments, with and without force reflection.
In the previous study, a polishing robot system was developed to automate the polishing process and to cope with the shortage of skilled workers. This polishing robot system has several advantages: reduced time for setting polishing work, decreased labor costs, effective operation, continuous polishing work without an operator, improved machine accuracy, and the ability to polish a free curved surface die. However, still the problem remains that a worker must stay to monitor the polishing process in the poor working conditions for a long time. Nowadays some advanced manufacturing companies need to find a way to check the performance of their production equipments and plants from remote sites. Thus, this study constructed the communication network and developed the monitoring programs (a servo program and a client program) to operate the polishing robot from remote sites. Using these programs, workers are able to monitor and control the polishing robot on the web page, in any place where internet service is possible. To guarantee a stable operation in spite of a variable computer operating environment, the monitoring system is implemented in Java. The experimental results showed that the developed monitoring programs provided a stable communication.
In this paper, a system program is introduced for the effective operation of revolute type robot manipulator. The I system program consists of several modes and specific functions. These modes and functions are flexible and easy to use because the structure is modular and conversational. This program had implemented and verified the efficiency together with a five axes robot.
Electrical machineries have been developed as following with various and high technical application in these days. Especially the robot is integrated system including mechanical structure, electronic control, and electrical technology. The robot system is not compact and has not natural motion like human, although the technology of robot has been developing continuously. The spherical wheel motor is useful electric machine for using robot joint as operation of 3-degrees of freedom. In this paper, a permanent magnet spherical wheel motor is introduced and performance characteristics are analyzed for improving of operation stability.
Recently, the tole-robot operations to an unstructured environment have been widely researched. The human's interaction with the tole-robot system can be used to improve robot operation and performance for an unknown environment. The exact modeling based on real environment is fundamental and important process for this interaction. In this paper, we propose an extrinsic parameter calibration and data augmentation method that only uses a circular jig in the hand-eye laser virtual environment. Compared to other methods, easier estimation and overlay can be done by this algorithm. Experimental results using synthetic graphic demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed algorithm.

Robotic technology has been grown up conspicuously by its versatility. KAERI has been involved in one of facets of robot industry to keep abreast of rapid evolving technologies In robotic field and has launched long-term R&D plan to assure the stable nuclear energy. In this paper, the latest development status of teleoperated robot system has been presented with emphasis the configuration of overall control system with 3 dimensional graphic system that provides operators with tele-presence situation. This robot system under development, composed of master-slave arm with controller and graphic simulator, is operated by a master manipulator to enable an installation and removal operation of nozzle dam system for steam generator. Evaluation and analysis has been carried out to get optimal parameters of robot system.
Operation of human-centered robot, in general, facilitates the creation of new process that may potentially harm the human operators. Design of safety-guaranteed operation of human-centered robots is, therefore, important since it determines the ultimate outcomes of operations involving safety of human operators. This study discusses the application of geometric tolerance and head injury criteria to safety assessment of human-centered robotic operations. Examples show that extending "Work Area" has more significant effect on the uncertainty in safety than extending the system range in the presence of velocity control.
