  • In hazardous conditions, where entry of human operators is restricted, such as high radiation regions in nuclear facilities, a lot of remote inspections and remote handling tasks must be performed. In this study, the stereo imaging system has been developed and the remote handling technique, has been studied to enhance the efficiency of tele-operation. The nozzle dam handling robot is one of the most important robots applied to nuclear facility. The robot will be equipped with the developed stereo imaging system. The stereo imaging system will outstandingly improve the tele installing/removal tasks for nozzle dam.

  • In this paper, a robot system is proposed to make it easy to learn about microprocessors. The proposed system consists of several subsystems. Since each subsystem can be operated with other subsystems or without other subsystems, many microprocessor courses can be offered depending on the background of students. Also the proposed system can be used in some robotics courses which emphasize sensor and tele-operation because it contains camera, MPEG encoder, IR sensor, and RF communication module.

  • We are developing a shared remote control mobile robot for aerial work in nuclear power plants (NPPs); a robot consists of a mobile platform, a telescopic mast, and a dual-arm slave with a working tool. It is used at a high location operating the manual operation mechanism of a fuel changer of a heavy water NPP. The robot system can cut/weld a pipe remotely in the case of an emergency or during the dismantling of the NPP. Owing to the challenging control mission considering limited human operator cognitive capability, some remote tasks require a shared control scheme, which demands systematic software design and integration. Therefore, we designed the architecture of the software systematically.

  • This paper presents the new gait implementation of a biped robot with smooth walking using 3-dimensional continuous trunk motion and kick action of ankle joints. Trajectory generation ova trunk is performed not on a unit gait but on a whole walking interval. In applying kick action such as heel-touch or toe-off, varying coordinate system was employed for the simplification of the kinematic analysis. Desired ZMP (zero moment point) is also changed to implement the efficient kick action. As a result, balancing motion of the proposed gait was much more decreased than that of conventional one. Moreover, robot\\`s walking behavior is very smooth, natural and similar to the pace of a human. The walking experiment system is composed of eight AC servo motors and a DSP controller. The walking simulation and the experimental results are shown using the proposed new walking algorithm.

  • In this technical note, the issues and challenges for the launch and recovery systems (LARS) and related techniques for the operation of an underwater robot from a manned platform are considered. Various types of LARS fitted to specific manned platforms, surface or sub-surface, are surveyed and categorized. The current UUV launch and recovery systems from surface ships and submarines utilize time consuming processes. As underwater robot technologies evolve and their roles are defined, safe and effective launch and recovery methods should be developed capable of reliable and efficient operations, particularly at a high sea state. To improve the existing underwater robot capabilities, LARS technology maturation is required in the near term, leading to the ability to incorporate autonomous LARS for an underwater robot on a manned platform. In the near term, particular emphasis should be placed on UUV LARS, which are surface ship based, with submarine based systems in the long term. Furthermore, for a dedicated LARS ship, independent of the existing host ship type, particular emphasis should be given to fully utilizing the capabilities of underwater robots.

  • This research is to apply the adaptive control of neuron networks for the real-time attitude control of Multi-articulated robot. Multi-articulated robot is expressed with a complicated mathematical model on account of the mechanic, electric non-linearity which each articulation of mechanism has, and includes an unstable factor in time of attitude control. If such a complex expression is included in control operation, it leads to the disadvantage that operation time is lengthened. Thus, if the rapid change of the load or the disturbance is given, it is difficult to fulfill the control of desired performance. In this research we used the response property curve of the robot instead of the activation function of neural network algorithms, so the adaptive control system of neural networks constructed without the information of modeling can perform a real-time control. The proposed adaptive control algorithm generated control signs corresponding to the non-linearity of Multi-articulated robot, which could generate desired motion in real time.

  • This paper proposed a method of cooperative control of three mobile robots for carrying an object placed on a floor together. Each robot moves to the object independently from its location to a pre-designated location for grasping the object stably. After grasping the common object, the coordination among the robots has been achieved by a master-slave mode. That is, a trajectory planning has been done for the master robot and the distances form the master robot to the two slave robots have been kept constant during the carrying operation. The localization for mobile robots has been implemented using the encoder data and inverse kinematics since the whole system does not have the slippage as much as a single mobile robot. Before the carrying operation, the lifting operations are implemented using the manipulators attached on the top of the mobile robots cooperatively. The real cooperative lifting and carrying operations are implanted to show the feasibility of the master-slave mode control based on the kinematics using the mobile manipulators developed for this research.

  • Robot-based layout automation has been recently promoted for the purpose of improving productivity and quality. Marking robots have various functional demands to secure marking precision and environmental adaptability. In particular, in order to automate marking work of building structure, correction of the marking line through position recognition of rebars placed is required. Because the rebars must maintain a constant cover thickness from the formwork surface, if the rebars are out of planned position, the rebar or marking line need to be corrected to secure the cover thickness. Thus, the marking robot for structural work needs to have the function for determining the position correction of the rebar or the marking line. In order to judge the correction of marking line, it is required to measure the distance between the planned marking line and the rebar placed. Therefore, this study proposes an algorithm that can measure the distance between the planned line and the rebar, and correct marking line for the automatic operation of the marking robot. The results of this study will be utilized as a core function for unmanned operation of the marking robot and contribute to securing precise marking by reflecting construction errors.

  • A cold & hot rolling coil production line of iron nill consists of a kind of coherent automatic process, but an automatic labelling process still had technical difficulties in the automation of its process. The reason for difficulties in building an automatic process is that quantitative data for each rolled coil from every shipping is not easy to receive from the previous process. it is not possible to apply for a general and simple purpose robot that is actually worked through a taught position to the process because the size and direction of the coi1 has differed on every shipping. From these reasons. we introduce a robot vision system to accept an expected variable situation and to ensure the stability and flexibility of the process. This paper examines a study applied for similar cases and finds the position and direction of relied coil using the moment invariant algorithm proposed by Hu. In addition. the camera calibration and position error compensation algorithm is applied by the analysis of the relationship of transition in a space coordinate system. The construction of a robot vision system proposed by this paper is a more intellectual system than that of the automatic labelling system. which is already used to the Daihen steel nill of NEW JAPAN steel mill co. Ltd in Japan, and shows a better independent operation in the field of production.

  • This paper describes the development of a prototype hexapod robot with six circular legs to overcome a variety of challenging terrains. The legs of the robot are very important for stability during walking, which are analyzed for determining the optimal design parameters through CAE tools. Its control system consists of three types of sensors, microprocessors, and communication modules for PC interface. The entire operation of the robot can be controlled and monitored using a PC. The experimental operations for three different roads verified the feasibility of the prototype robot for carrying out reconnaissance on multi terrain. In the near future, the prototype robot can be used for a military purpose of detecting and informing a potential risk in advance.
