A Robot Motion Authoring Using Finger-Robot Interaction

  • This paper proposes a robot motion authoring using finger-robot interaction. The proposed method is a user friendly method that easily authors (creates and controls) robot motion according to the number of fingers. The effectiveness of the proposed motion authoring method was verified based on motion authoring simulation of an industrial robot.

Design and Development of Robot Command Card for Coding Learning

  • In this paper, we propose a design and development of instructional cards to understand the grammar of coding, solving the problems and extending the computational thinking in the robot-driven environment. First, we designed the input/output module of the robot to process the coding grammar through the function analysis of the robot. And we designed the module of command card to learn coding grammar using color sensors. We have proven the validity of the designed instruction card by examining the experts to see if it is suitable for coding grammar learning. Designed robot and command card were developed with 28 cards and sensor robot. After applying the developed robot and command card to the elementary school students, the questionnaire showed that students grow the understanding and confidence of coding. In addition, students showed an increased need for programming learning.

  • To facilitate interaction between home robot and humans, it's urgently needed to make in-depth research in Human-Robot Interaction(HRI). The purpose of this study was to examine how children interacted with a newly developed home robot named 'iRobi' in a bid to identify how the home robot affected their psychology and the effectiveness of learning through the home robot. Concerning the psychological effects of the home robot, the children became familiar with the robot, and found it possible to interact with it, and their initial anxiety was removed. As to its learning effect, the group that studied by using the home robot outperformed the others utilizing the other types of learning media (books, WBI)in attention, learning interest and academic achievement. Accordingly, home robot could serve as one of successful vehicles to expedite the psychological and educational interaction of children.

  • Virtual Robot Education System (VRES), which is for programming education with a Lego Mindstorm NXT robot, is designed and implemented. Through this system, program learners can edit source code, compile, download it into the robot, and run their executive program. In order to observe it, the system includes web cameras and provide monitoring services. Thus, students are able to verify the operation of robot into which they download their program in detail and to debug if necessary. In addition, we design a new simple user-friendly programming language and a corresponding compiler for it. With those tools, learner can more easily create programs for NXT robot and test them than Java language. A educator can control and manage the robot for the subject of a class with direct control mode of our system. Therefore, the proposed system is able to support students to learn robot programming during or after regular classes with web browsers through Internet.

  • Robot assisted programming education has been highlighted because it enhances the involvement of students. Robots are combined with mechanical and program elements. However, in after school Robotics classes, almost all is education for the mechanical elements of robots. On the other hand, education for robot programming is a starting stage. It is difficult for students to programming with sensors. Therefore, in this paper, I researched the relationships between elements from sensors to output devices. And I applied it to Robotics education. As a result, the students can understand robot because they studied the relationships between data from sensors and output devices. We proved it by the survey after the relationship education.

Learning with a Robot for STEAM in Elementary School Curriculum (초등정규교육과정에서 STEAM을 위한 로봇활용교육)

  • 'Learning with a robot' is now considered as one of the best candidates for STEAM education, which is recently growing its importance. Most of the 'learning with a robot' programs in elementary schools serve as afterschool classes. The students participating in the afterschool classes are mostly boys who are interested in science and robots. This paper mainly concerns that a robot can be helpful for improving students' interest in STEAM education. We divided the robot utilizable aspects into 5 areas with educational points of view; abstract concept understanding type, structure-oriented type, athletics-oriented type, intelligence-oriented type and value-orientated type. We extracted all robot utilizable subjects and units from elementary school curriculum, and developed lesson plans which can be applicable to regular classes. And we also verified them by applying into an elementary school for 5 months. As the result of the analysis, we can conclude that 'learning with a robot' can encourage students' interest in STEAM, and it is more effective for girls than boys. Finally, we discuss problems that teachers may face in using a robot for regular classes, and make suggestions about the use of a robot for STEAM education.

The Usability of a Robot as an Educational Assistant in a Kindergarten and Young Children's Perceptions of their Relationship with the Robot (유아교육기관에서의 교사보조 로봇에 대한 유아의 경험과 인식)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the usability of a robot in kindergartens and the children's perceptions of that robot. In order to answer these questions, a field study, picture drawing and interviews were conducted over twelve days in a kindergarten located in Seoul. Our results indicated that children were likely to use the robot in a group and girls tended to use it more than boys. Children's affection towards the robot was positive and they perceived the robot mostly in terms of a friend. Finally, the picture drawing activity differed according to the usability level. Children who were in the high usability level grouping engaged more with educational content and storytelling while the low usability level grouping utilized the robot for singing in a large group.

  • According to a comparison study of international academic achievements, Korean students showed high academic achievements in science and mathematics, whereas their learning motivation appeared relatively low. Therefore, this work developed the robot-based STEM integrated education program reflecting an engineering class model. The title of the program is determined as 'animals' which are included in one section of the fourth grade science curriculum, are friendly to students, and are effective for robot application. Robot-based STEM program is consisted of three areas: robot education, subject-related course learning, and engineering education. The STEM program was reviewed by 14 teachers. The study result presented that regardless of knowledge of robot, most teachers gave positive response to program goal, composition of contents, application of robot.

  • Refer ta the current state of optional curriculums and information related classes in elementary schools, the number of schools and classes, which is related in information education, is constantly reducing in recent 3 years. It is anticipated that the status of information education in school will get lower, because the extra-curricular activity is planned ta be changed with creative experience activity in revised education curriculum 2009, which is published by the ministry of education, science and technology. Moreover, the current state of information education in schools cannot actively handle the social changes and requirements but keep the old curriculums. This study explains the effectiveness and the examples of creative personality and fluency using educational robot in creative experience activity. We also tried ta find the probability of robot utilizing education as an expanded information education area in elementary school.

  • In this paper, the instrument for scientific education in elementary school is developed with the application of basic robot technology for coming IT future world. Particularly, a kind of robot game to fun a race with each other is planed to give a motive or interest in scientific education. This robot game is played with two robots per player, One robot is moved wirelessly with a remote controller and the other robot is moved automatically with intelligence given by computer program made by a player. This game system will be in spotlight as multi-objective educational system not only to teach basic technology of IT, but also to improve the ability for logical and creative thought in elementary school students.
