  • Korea entered the aging society in 2000 and has been officially classified as an aged society as of 2019. As a result thereof, the number of aging seamen and the number of marine accidents of aging crews have consistently increased every year. The aging of drivers, in the relam of road traffic, is the same as those in the field of shipping. However, research and policy-making to solve these problems in the realm of road transportation are more active than in the shipping field. Therefore, this study is aimed at finding education methods for reducing traffic accidents by old aging drivers and determining the benchmark in terms of maritime education. In the area of domestic and foreign road traffic, traffic safety education for older aging drivers is implemented as a way to reduce the causes of human factors in traffic accidents. This study analyzed the current situation of the maritime education field and combined it with the solution in the field of road traffic. First, it is deemed necessary to implement professional license acquisition education. Second, job refresher training for the renewal of the license for aging seamen has to be implemented. Lastly, it is imperative to implement the age transition education for aging seamen. This study, however, is limited to determining the improvement plan for maritime education in relation to aging seamen. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate varying studies in the future.

  • Soil ecology has important roles in global ecosystems. However, soil ecological quality information is being ignored when assessing ecological impact of construction actions. And methods for classifying and assessing soil ecological quality have been very little established in comparison to those for animal and plant ecosystems. In this study, it was examined whether soil ecological quality information has influence on determining an eco-friendly route for a road construction project. For this, sensitivity analysis was systematically performed by varying the relative significance (weights) of soil ecological quality information among natural environmental and ecological factors. When the weight of soil ecological quality was greater than just 14%, the soil ecological quality information significantly influenced the determination of the eco-friendly routes for a specific road construction project. This demonstrates that soil ecological quality information has to be considered for more reliable environmental impact assessment, and also supports the validity of use of soil ecological quality information and its mapping technique in planning and siting of eco-friendly construction projects.

  • The unsignalized intersections in a community road in the city of Seoul have 3,753 traffic accidents(9%) of total 41,702 cases in 2008, not high in the occurrence rate of traffic accidents, but seem to have a quite high potential of accidents due to the unreasonable and insufficient operation of systems and facilities in the part of traffic foundations. In particular, the un-signalized intersections in a community road have an insufficient measure for safety as compared to the crossroads with signals, and there are few analysis of traffic accidents and domestic researches on the model of affecting factors. Our country also has no concept of passing priority in operating a crossroad without signals, differently from foreign countries, so the researches and safety measures for improving the safety of a crossroad without signals in a community road are urgent. Therefore, This study set out to analyze the road conditions, traffic conditions, and traffic environment conditions on unsignalized intersection, to identify the elements that would impose obstructions in safety, and develop a traffic accident prediction model to evaluate the safety of an unsignalized intersection using the correlation between the elements and an accident. In addition, the focus was made on suggesting appropriate traffic safety policies by dealing with the danger elements in advance and on enhancing the safety on intersection in developing a traffic accident prediction model for an unsignalized intersection.

  • Noise pollution on the residential areas adjacent to urban expressway is a very severe situation. There has been a significant increases in the number of residential areas near urban expressway, and the quality of life in such areas is being degraded due to increased traffic volume and speed. In this study, several factors such as traffic volume, speed, and distance from noise source, etc. that affect the noise level were investigated for the residential areas near urban expressway. A correlation and regression model was built to examine the relationship between such traffic factors and noise. The study result found that traffic volume had a closer relationship with noise than speed had. Therefore, to decrease road traffic noise, it is more imperative to control traffic volume than traffic speed.

  • Unlike ground roads, the on-ramp merging section of underground roads cannot be seen by drivers of main road due to tunnels. In this study, a driving simulator was used for analysis, and virtual driving experiments were carried out to assess the driver's visibility for different design factors. The driver's driving behavior was analyzed by setting scenarios considering the length of chevron markings and the approach speed from the main road. The results of the analysis were used to determine the design factors for ensuring visibility when constructing the virtual driving environment for each scenario. These factors, including speed, lane change points, and driver's gaze ratios, were reviewed for significance using a statistical approach. As a result, in scenarios with a higher approach speed from the main road, it was discovered that there was a difference in driver's behavior between specific scenarios depending on the length of the section with chevron markings. Based on these findings, this study suggests implications and feasible solutions to improve driver safety on the on-ramp merging section of underground roads.

  • LiDAR is a key sensor used in autonomous vehicles, and its range of applications is expanding because it can generate 3D information and is relatively robust to various environmental factors. However, it is known that LiDAR performance is degraded to some extent due to signal attenuation and scattering by raindrops during rain, and thus the need for analysis of factors affecting rainfall in road environment detection and utilization using LiDAR has been confirmed. In this study, we analyze how signal attenuation and scattering, known as factors degrading LiDAR performance during rain, cause performance degradation based on real data. We acquire data using facilities that utilize high-luminosity retroreflective sheeting in indoor chamber where quantity of rainfall can be controlled, and quantitatively confirm the degradation of LiDAR performance during rain by interpreting it from the perspective of signal attenuation and scattering. According to the point cloud distribution and performance analysis results, LiDAR performance deteriorates due to signal attenuation and scattering caused by rain. Specifically, the quantitative performance analysis shows that LiDAR experiences a decrease in intensity primarily due to signal attenuation from rain, as well as a reduction in NPC and intensity due to signal scattering effects, along with an increase in measurement distance error.

  • In the research for driver assistance systems, traffic sign information to the driver must be a very important information. Therefore, the detection system of traffic signs located on the road should be able to handel real-time. To detect the traffic signs, color and shape of traffic signs is to use the information after images obtained using the CCD camera. In the road environment, however, using color information to detect traffic sings will cause many problems due to changes of weather and environmental factors. In this paper, to solve it, the candidate traffic sign regions are detected from road images obtained in a variety of the illumination changes using the HSI eign-color model. And then, using the invariant moment-based SVM classifier to detect traffic signs are proposed. Experimental results show that, traffic sign detection rate is 91%, and the processing time per frame is 0.38sec. Proposed method is useful for real-time intelligent traffic guidance systems can be applied.

  • Turbulence produced on roadways is one of the major factors determining the dilution rates at the initial stage of traffic emissions of air pollutants and, thus, the distribution of air pollutants near the roadways. Field experiments were conducted on Gyeongbu Highway, one of the busiest highways in Korea, for 4~7 days in winter, spring, and summer. Two three-dimensional ultrasonic anemometers were installed on both sides of the highway to estimate turbulence intensities (vertical wind fluctuation and kinetic turbulence energy) induced by the roadway. Roadway-induced turbulence consists of three components: structural road-induced turbulence (S-RIT), thermal road-induced turbulence (T-RIT), and vehicle-induced turbulence (VIT). The contribution of T-RIT to the total RIT was insignificant (less than 10%), and the majority of RIT was S-RIT (by the highway embankment) and VIT. In this study, we propose the empirical relationships of VIT as a function of traffic density and wind speed under free-flow traffic conditions. Although this empirical relationship appears to underestimate the VIT, it can be applied to the air quality models easily because the relationship is simple and only needs readily obtainable input variables (wind speed and traffic information).

  • Calcium chloride (CaCl2) and industrial sodium chloride (NaCl) are commonly used as deicing agents in Korea, which are expected to release dissolved chloride ions into the road surfaces following their application. This study aimed to comprehensively assess the usage of deicing agents and variations in groundwater quality between 2016 and 2022 by analyzing public data provided by various domestic institutions. Additionally, the study sought to identify factors contributing to deteriorating road conditions by comparing the amount of CaCl2 appied and the incidence of potholes. Pothole occurrences during the study period were primarily reported during heavy rainfall periods without application of deicing agents. In 2022, chloride ion concentrations in groundwater in the southeastern Korean Peninsula were significantly higher than in previous years, coinciding with severe cold waves and heavy snowfall that resulted in increased deicing agent use. However, further data collection and verification are needed to distinguish between the effects of seawater intrusion and deicing agents. Despite limitations in the completeness and consistency of public data, the research highlighted the urgent need for improved data quality and further field verification to fully understand and mitigate the environmental impacts of deicing agents.

  • Attention has increasingly focused on the pollutant load discharged from rural area since the enforcement of total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) in korea. As one of the methods to control the inflow of pollutant load during wet weather events, local governments are attempting to apply non-point source control facility. To design those facilities appropriately, it is essential to understand the runoff characteristics of pollutants such as TSS, $BOD_5$, $COD_{Cr}$, TP and TN. In the paper, the quantitative analyses for pollutant runoff characteristics were examined in a small rural watershed with the area of about 53 hectares. For a dry weather day and wet weather events, variation patterns of dry weather flow and runoff characteristics of wet weather flows were monitored and investigated. The runoff model using XP-SWMM reflecting the landuse types of the watershed in detail was simulated to perform the sensitivity analyses for several factors influencing on their hydrograph and pollutographs. As a result, for the case of medium and small rainfall events (i. e. total rainfall of 35.8 and 17.5 mm), the impervious area including green house, roof and road which covers relatively low portion of total area (i. e. 16%) caused substantial first flush and the majority of total runoff load. Therefore, it has been concluded that the runoff characteristics of each pollutant and distribution of impervious area should be considered for the establishment of the control strategy of non-point pollutant runoff at a rural area.
