PURPOSES: Current theories for composite structures are too difficult for design engineers for construction. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate to the practicing engineers, how to apply the advanced composite materials theory to the road structures. METHODS: Some laminate orientations have decreasing values of $D_{16}$, $B_{16}$, $D_{26}$ and $B_{26}$ stiffnesses as the ply number increases. The plate aspect ratio considered is from 1 to 5. In order to study the effect of $M_x$ on the equilibrium equations, two cases are considered. $M_x$ term is considered or neglected. RESULTS: Most of the road structures have high aspect ratios, for such cases further simplification is possible by neglecting the effect of the longitudinal moment terms. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the road structures have plate aspect ratios higher than 2. It is concluded that, for all boundary conditions, neglecting the longitudinal moment($M_x$) terms is acceptable if the aspect ratio (a/b) is equal to or higher than 2. This conclusion gives good guide line for design of the road structures.
Objectives: The purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness of participatory road safety education program for the lower grade in elementary schools. This program was developed based on the Activated Health Education model. Methods: Study design was compromise experimental group pre-post design. 456 students in 8 schools were nonrandomly assigned to study group(n=224) or control(n=232). The students finished self-administered questionnaire before and after education. Collected data was analyzed by using the SPSS. Results: 1. The common relevant factors in road safety knowledge and attitude were 'residential state' and 'experience of traffic accident'. 2. The knowledge showed that the case and control scored at 6.48 and 6.41 points before. After this intervention, the case and control scored at 8.38 and 6.51. The difference of the case was significant(p<0.001). 3. The attitude showed that the case and control scored at 19.67 and 19.63 before. After this, the case and control scored at 19.86 and 19.63. The difference of the case was significant(p<0.05). Conclusion: In order to implement the road safety education, children's socio-demographic characteristics were considered. Because this education was effective in both improving knowledge and attitude and bringing interest, various participatory program will be applied in road safety education for children.

The wheel bearing hub unit is developed type of wheel bearing unified with the hub parts. It has advantage of reducing the weight and the number of components. And, it also improves uniformity of manufacturing quality, In order to design the wheel bearing hub units, many techniques are used such as load analysis, structure analysis and bearing characteristics analysis and so forth. These techniques need highly accurate load conditions founded on service conditions. In this study, to design the wheel bearing hub units used widespread in passenger cars, the service load was measured through driving tests on the public roads and in the special events. The public roads are classified into highway, intercity road, rural road, urban road, and unpaved road so as to know what the characteristics of the road loads are. The results of the tests showed that the wheel force was relative to the lateral acceleration, and also could be calculated from the lateral acceleration. The lateral acceleration was measured from 0.0G to 0.6G in general driving on the public roads, with different distributions in each road type. In special events, the maximum lateral acceleration was measured from 0.8G to 1.3G.
Road safety is defined under the minimum design standard and design examination process is consisted of the standard according to current road design. However, road safety in practical way is correlative to not only all element of roads but also road shape, such as, between straight line and curved line and between curved lines. Also. it is related to alignments such as horizontal alignment and vertical alignment, and cross section. That is, the practical road design should be examined in both sides of 3 dimension and consecutiveness (consistency) as the actual road is a 3 - dimensional successive object. The paper presents a concept for acceleration to evaluate consistency of road considering actual road shape on 3-dimension. Acceleration of vehicle is influential to road consistency based on running state of vehicles and state of drivers. The magnitude of acceleration. especially, is a quite influential element to drivers. Based on above, the acceleration on each point on 3-D road can be calculated and then displacement can be done. Computation of acceleration means total calculation on each axis. Speed profile refers to “Development of a safety evaluation model for highway horizontal alignment based on running speed(Jeong, Jun-Hwa, 2001)” and then acceleration can be calculated by using the speed pronto. According to literature review, definition of acceleration on 3-D and g-g-g diagram are established. For example, as a result of the evaluation, if the acceleration is out of range, the road is out of consistency. The paper shows calculation for change of acceleration on imaginary road under minimum design standard and the change tried to be applied to consistency. However accurate acceleration is not shown because the speed forecasting model is limited and the paper did not consider state of vehicles (suspension, tires and model of vehicles). If speed pronto is defined exactly, acceleration is calculated on all road shapes, such as. compound curve and clothoid curve. and then it is appled to consistency evaluation. Unfortunately, speed forecasting model on 3 -D road and on compound curves have rarely presented. Speed forecasting model and speed profile model need to be established and standard of consistency evaluation need to developed and verified by experimental vehicles.

The profile of unpaved road is an important issue in the reliability of endurance test. Efforts on measuring 2D road profile and analyzing the severity have been continued in the study of performing reliable endurance test evaluations through reflecting the results of such measurement and analysis. However, 2D road profile has limitation in measuring the profile in the road width direction because data is obtained along the trailer wheel track. Therefore, in order to measure 3-dimensional shape of road surface and construct severity DB of 3D road profile, Changwon Proving Ground(CPG) of Agency for Defense Development(ADD) developed 3D profilometer which is composed of laser scanner, IMU, GPS, encoder and so on. This paper focuses on the analysis of unpaved road severity using 3D road profile for army operation roads. This results will be used to manage test courses severity of CPG.
The purpose of this study is to develop a standard calculation program of forest road drainage facilities that may help forest road designers to design forest road drainage facilities more conveniently and precisely. Especially, the characteristics of this program is that the forest road designers may calculate the amount of outflow in the basin using rainfall intensity data conveniently, without the data designers should acquire through site measurements when they carry out indoor preliminary measurements before they go out for outdoor measurements. In this manner, excessive design may be restrained by offering minimum standard calculation for drainage structures. And also this study was designed to facilitate proper layout of drainage structures by calculating outflow discharge of each basin where forest roads will be installed. Especially, this study will contribute to leveling-up of forest design techniques as the researcher has prepared the reports on whole process of drain pipe installation and provided them in the form of computer file or printout, which show a rational design process, and make it possible to modify in case of an error.

In order to drive on road safely, the type of road design and construction is basically needed to optimize driver's safety and vehicle performance. Although the heavy traffic highways were built by reflecting these factors, the national highways and local roads have still taken a lot of problems. In this study, we analyzed the behavior characteristics of a vehicle according to the speed variation of the vehicle using the PC-Crash program for the traffic accidents reconfiguration at GULUN interchange located Hongcheon in Gangwon Province. the conditions outlet surface of the road for analysis were dry road surface, wet road surface and icy road surface. As a result, we identified the fact that the friction coefficient of road surface and the speed of vehicle affected to vehicle behavior characteristics of outlet shape in GULUN interchange, and showed the possibility that we can verify a problem about road design through to this simulation in advance.
Road design guideline provides the directions on how to design a road alignment based on design speed, and this guideline has a design expectation in that design speed is supposed to be equal to the operating speed of drivers. Horizontal curve design is also based on design speed, and minimum radius is derived based on the drivers comfort while negotiating the curve. However, side friction reflecting drivers comfort is lower than a physical friction measured on wet road surface, therefore, it is reasonable to regard the criterion on minimum radius has a safety margin. Futhermore, the practical preference of choosing the larger radius than minimum leads to a noticeable gap between design speed and operating speed, so links to the violation of design expectation implicated in the guideline. In order to review this assumption, friction and operating speed at rural roads was measured and observed. As the results, a safety margin brought out by the gap between comfort-based friction and measured friction is qualitatively derived. Also, the gap between design speed and operating speed presumably caused by the safety margin and practical preference is analysed. By this, it is suggested that current design guideline should provides not only the minimum radius but also the management of road alignment design to minimize the gap between the design speed and operating speed.
PURPOSES : The authors set out to estimate the related carbon emissions, energy use, and costs of the national freeways and highways in Korea. To achieve this goal, a macro-level methodology for estimating those amounts by road type, road structure type, and road life cycle was developed. METHODS : The carbon emissions, energy use, and costs associated with roads vary according to the road type, road structure type, and road life cycle. Therefore, in this study, the road type, road structure type, and road life cycle were classified into two or three categories based on criteria determined by the authors. The unit amounts of carbon emissions and energy use per unit road length by classification were estimated using data gathered from actual road samples. The unit amounts of cost per unit road length by classification were acquired from the standard cost values provided in the 2013 road business manual. The total carbon emissions, energy use, and cost of the national freeways and highways were calculated by multiplying the road length by the corresponding unit amounts. RESULTS: The total carbon emissions, energy use, and costs associated with the national freeways and highways in Korea were estimated by applying the estimated unit amounts and the developed method. CONCLUSIONS: The developed method can be employed in the road planning and design stage when decision makers need to consider the impact of road construction from an environmental and economic point of view.

Recently, the interests in three-dimensional design and BIM(Building Information Modeling) are increasing in civil engineering sector and the researches about three-dimensional design and quantity take-off methods for civil engineering structures have been conducted. However, these studies are just carried out the 3D design and quantity calculation of civil structures on the road or railway such as bridges and tunnels. The study on the quantity take-off methods and the evaluation of calculated results on the earth works should be performed in more detail. Based on these backgrounds in mind, the study was conducted the three-dimensional road design and evaluated the quantity take-off results on the earth works using 3D calculation method(average end area method, prismoidal method and composit method). The calculated quantity from composit method showed about 5% error of measuring efficiency than the average end area method, and when reporting the quantity calculation of earth works, it is necessary to specify the calculation method using quantity take-off of earth works.
