  • Markov chains and Monte Carlo Simulation were applied to account for the probabilistic nature of pavement deterioration over time using data collected in the field. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate pavement network performance of Western Australia (WA) by applying the existing pavement management tools relevant to WA road construction networks. Two approaches were used to analyze the pavement networks: evaluating current pavement performance data to assess WA State Road networks and predicting the future states using past and current pavement data. The Markov chains process and Monte Carlo Simulation methods were used to predicting future conditions. The results indicated that Markov chains and Monte Carlo Simulation prediction models perform well compared to pavement performance data from the last four decades. The results also revealed the impact of design, traffic demand, and climate and construction standards on urban pavement performance. This study recommends an appropriate and effective pavement engineering management system for proper pavement design and analysis, preliminary planning, future pavement maintenance and rehabilitation, service life, and sustainable pavement construction functionality.

  • The cycle time of construction equipment for earthwork operations has a significant impact on project productivity. Elements that directly impact a haul vehicle's cycle time must be identified in order to accurately quantify the haul cycle time and implement strategies to decrease it. The objective of this research is to scientifically identify and quantify variables that have a significant impact on the cycle time of a dump truck used for earthwork. Real-time location data collected by GPS devices deployed in an active earthwork moving construction site was analyzed using statistical regression. External data including environmental components and haul road conditions were also collected periodically throughout the study duration. Several statistical analyses including a variance analysis and regression analysis were completed on the dump truck location data. Collected data was categorized by stage of the dump truck cycle. Results indicate that a dump truck's enter idle time, exit idle time, moving speed and driver visibility can significantly impact the dump truck cycle time. The contribution of this research is the identification and analysis of statistically significant correlations of variables within the cycle time.

  • The costs due to the maintenance and its method of national road have increased every year, and the maintenance costs have become higher due to the maintenance method without considering the characteristics of each region. This study is a preliminary study regarding the determination of maintenance method according to the characteristics of each region by applying variables (e.g. serviced time, traffic volume, average temperature, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, rainfall, and snowfall) to decide the maintenance and its method through the correlation analysis of road maintenance and repair period for each regional agency using the maintenance history data of national road management agency.

  • There is a relationship between effective time management and project success. Therefore, advanced time management techniques have recently been introduced. This paper investigates the current time management practices for road construction sites and proposes lean construction practices to effectively implement time management. This would be helpful to establish an effective schedule plan. Also, an efficient construction site time management system can be developed base on this fundamental research. Furthermore, future research should be performed to investigate the performance of lean construction.

  • The necessity of estimating the time and cost required for tunnel construction has led to extensive research in this regard. Since geological conditions are significant factors in terms of time and cost of road tunnels, considering these conditions is crucial. Uncertainties about the geological conditions of a tunnel alignment cause difficulties in planning ahead of the required construction time and costs. In this paper, the continuous-space, discrete-state Markov process has been used to predict geological conditions. The Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation (MCS) method is employed to estimate the construction time and costs of a road tunnel project using the input data obtained from six tunneling expert questionnaires. In the first case, the input data obtained from each expert are individually considered and in the second case, they are simultaneously considered. Finally, a comparison of these two modes based on the technique presented in this article suggests considering views of several experts simultaneously to reduce uncertainties and ensure the results obtained for geological conditions and the construction time and costs.

  • The construction supervisors of the public companies are usually responsible for process management, quality management, safety management, and many other various tasks that occur during construction project. Public companies such as Korea Highway Corporation have developed a framework and manual for management and supervision of construction projects. But, there has been the change of business environment such as increase of private investment project and the introduce of construction management system recently. It has been necessary for construction supervisor to streamline the current project management system in the owner's aspect in order to cope with the expected new challenges. Accordingly, this research has been investigated and analyzed the operation system between Korean supervisor and foreign supervisor in their public corporation. This research has suggested the advanced project management in their public corporation. Especially, this study has proposed the construction management manual for supervisors such as inspectors training, supervisors construction manual, and supervisors training road map.

  • In urban planning, road facility is used not only for the transportation purpose but also for the utility line space purpose such as electrical, gas, tele communication, heating, water, sewer, and so on. However, since these utilities are built by many different groups, it becomes very difficult to communicate each other. Delay in one party can cause another party's schedule delay but they don't commuicate often. Also, some delay in utility work can cause frequent pavement cut. And, this will impact on construction cost, schedule delay, low quality, user complain and cost. This study developed spatiotemporal decision model to prevent prequent utility cut for mega project such as new urban development project. In addition, this study developed utility cut management system to manage utility cut schedule under pavement. Finally, developed system was applied to new urban development project and verified there effectiveness.

  • An R&D project, 'Carbon Neutral Road Technologies Development', sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport was performed and sustainable development is being discussed in relation to global climate change. A draft of the green highway certification system, the green highway design and construction technologies for making low carbon eco-friendly roads, and Green Highway Technology Investment Evaluation System (GTIES) for estimating and managing carbon emissions from roads have been developed from the results of the R&D project. A scheme for expanding the application of these technologies and building sustainable road systems by considering the concept of sustainability was proposed in this research.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the on-the-spot survey method of road occupation information. The on-the-spot survey method is proposed through the analysis of information searching function, document and process. The decision of road occupation permission and the grasp of illegal occupation status are closely connected with national rights and interests. To keep the road occupation permission and illegal occupation status, the easy acquisition of road occupation information is very important. But the person in charge of road occupation have a difficulty in obtaining occupation information because that information is still managed by paper drawing. Accordingly. this study develop the on-the-spot survey tool of road occupation using the occupation information that is managed by Construction Authorization & Permission System and the mobile techniques like UMPC. As the result of this study. the efficiency on the authorization. permission. and public grievance of construction project has improved

  • In order to excavate underground tunnel most safely such as Han river, the slurry shield TBM method is applied to cope with face of high water pressure for many metro projects. In downtown subway project most of excavated soil is discharged externally whereas in road construction excavated soil is used as filling materials so it becomes important factor for success of the project. After excavated soil, weathered rock and soft rock are discharged with bentonite through discharge pipe to slurry treatment plant then those soils are separated in separation plant according to those size. Fine grained soil has been discarded together with filter cake but it is not toxic and can be mixed with coarse aggregate in proper ratio so this study is performed to find use of qualified filling material to meet quality standard. Therefore, in this study, legal standards and quality standards for the utilization of excavated soil of the slurry shield TBM method were examined and test was conducted to derive recycling way for filter cake and aggregate. And a plan for using it as a filling material for road construction was derived. Because bentonite is a clay composed of montmorillonite, and the excavated soil in the tunnel is also non-toxic, disposal of this material can waste social cost so it is expected to be helpful in the underground space development project that carries out the TBM project by recycling it as a valuable resource.
