The filmwise condensation heat transfer coefficients of R-134a on the horizontal copper and stainless steel tubes were measured and analyzed. The outside diameter of the tubes was 15.88 mm, and the tube thickness ranged from 0.89 to 1.65 mm. The polished stainless steel tube had an RMS surface roughness($R_q$) of 0.37 $\mu$m, and commercial stainless steel tubes had an surface roughness($R_q$) of 1.855 $\mu$m. The tests were conducted at the saturation temperatures of 20 and $30^{\circ}C$, and the liquid wall subcoolings from 0.4 to $2.1^{\circ}C$. The measured condensation heat transfer coefficients were significantly lower than the predicted data by the Nusselt analysis. This trend in the stainless steel tube was explained by the effects of thermal resistance of tube material and surface roughness. Based on the experimental data with respect to wall thickness and surface roughness, it was suggested that the existing correlation on external condensation should be modified by considering material and surface roughness factors. The revised correlation was developed by introducing the effects of wall thickness and surface roughness into the Nusselt equation. The average deviation of the revised correlation was 13.0 %.

European Space Agency's Sentinel-1 has an improved spatial and temporal resolution, as compared to previous satellite data such as Envisat Advanced SAR (ASAR) or Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT). Thus, the assumption used for low-resolution retrieval algorithms used by ENVISAT ASAR or ASCAT is not applicable to Sentinel-1, because a higher degree of land surface heterogeneity should be considered for retrieval. The assumption of homogeneity over land surface is not valid any more. In this study, considering that soil roughness is one of the key parameters sensitive to soil moisture retrievals, various approaches are discussed. First, soil roughness is spatially inverted from Sentinel-1 backscattering over Yanco sites in Australia. Based upon this, Artificial Neural Networks data (feedforward multiplayer perception, MLP, Levenberg-Marquadt algorithm) are compared with Fractal approach (brownian fractal, Hurst exponent of 0.5). When using ANNs, training data are achieved from theoretical forward scattering models, Integral Equation Model (IEM). and Sentinel-1 measurements. The network is trained by 20 neurons and one hidden layer, and one input layer. On the other hand, fractal surface roughness is generated by fitting 1D power spectrum model with roughness spectra. Fractal roughness profile is produced by a stochastic process describing probability between two points, and Hurst exponent, as well as rms heights (a standard deviation of surface height). Main interest of this study is to estimate a spatial variability of roughness without the need of local measurements. This non-local approach is significant, because we operationally have to be independent from local stations, due to its few spatial coverage at the global level. More fundamentally, SAR roughness is much different from local measurements, Remote sensing data are influenced by incidence angle, large scale topography, or a mixing regime of sensors, although probe deployed in the field indicate point data. Finally, demerit and merit of these approaches will be discussed.

In configuring an automated polishing system, a monitoring scheme to estimate the surface roughness is necessary. In this study, a precision polishing process, magnetic abrasive finishing (MAF), along with an in-process monitoring setup was investigated. A magnetic tooling is connected to a CNC machining to polish the surface of stavax(S136) die steel workpieces. During finishing experiments, both AE signals and force signals were sampled and analysed. The finishing results show that MAF has nano scale finishing capability (upto 8nm in surface roughness) and the sensor signals have strong correlations with the parameters such as gap between the tool and workpiece, feed rate and abrasive size. In addition, the signals were utilized as the input parameters of artificial neural networks to predict generated surface roughness. Among the three networks constructed -AE rms input, force input, AE+force input- the ANN with sensor fusion (AE+force) produced most stable results. From above, it has been shown that the proposed sensor fusion scheme is appropriate for the monitoring and prediction of the nano scale precision finishing process.

We investigated the effect of etching time on the surface roughness, and electrical and optical properties of ZnO and 2 wt% Al-doped ZnO (AZO) films. The ZnO and AZO films were deposited on glass substrates by RF magnetron sputtering technique. The etching experiment was carried out using a solution of 5% HCl at room temperature. The surface roughness was characterized by Atomic Force Microscopy. The electrical property was measured by Hall measurement system and 4-point probe. The optical property was characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy. After the wet chemical etching, the surface textures were obtained on the surface of the ZnO and AZO films. With the increase of etching time, the surface roughness (RMS) of the films increased and the transmittance of the films was observed to decrease. For the AZO film, a low resistivity of $1.0{\times}10^{-3}\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ was achieved even after the etching.

Electron beam irradiation is widely used as a type of surface modification technology to advance surface properties. In this study, the effect of electron beam irradiation on properties, such as surface hardness, wear resistance, roughness, and critical load of Titanium Aluminium nitride (TiAlN) films was investigated. TiAlN films were deposited on the SKD-61 substrate by using cathode arc ion plating. After deposition, the films were bombarded with intense electron beam for 10 minutes. The surface hardness was increased up to 4520 HV at electron irradiation energy of 1500 eV. In addition, surface root mean square (RMS) roughness of the films irradiated at 1500 eV shows the lowest roughness of 484 nm in this study.
Rock discontinuities, as weak interfaces in rock, control mechanical properties of rock mass. Presence of discontinuities complicates the engineering properties of rock, which is the root of anisotropy and heterogeneity that have nonnegligible influences on the rock engineering. Morphological characteristics of discontinuities in natural rock are an important factor influencing the mechanical properties, particularly roughness, of discontinuities. Therefore, the accurate measurement and characterization of morphologies of discontinuities are preconditions for studying mechanical properties of discontinuities. Taking discontinuities in red sandstone as research objects, the research obtained three-dimensional (3D) morphologies of discontinuities in natural rock by carrying out 3D morphological scanning tests. The waviness and roughness were separated from 3D morphologies of rock discontinuities through wavelet transform. In addition, the calculation method for the overall slope root mean square (RMS) as well as slope RMSs of waviness and roughness of 3D morphologies of discontinuities considering the shear direction was proposed. The research finally determined an evaluation method for 3D morphologies of discontinuities by quantitatively characterizing 3D morphologies with the mean value of the three slope RMSs.

A ray tracing method to analyze the propagation channel characteristics for a millimeter-wave indoor wireless communication system is presented. Reflected rays from planar as well as rough surfaces are included. Transmitted rays though a thin dielectric slab are considered. Maps representing received power levels and RMS delay spread from a transmitter in a rectangular room are shown. The received power levels in the empty room for bottom's roughness factors of 0 and 0.13 are represented. The simulation results are well consistent with the calculation of Friis equation with reflection coefficient. Any size of furniture the shape of plane form can be positioned anywhere in the room.

Recently, the necessity of the detection of abnormal machining process is being emphasized in order to improve the machining accuracy and reduce the cost in unmanned operating system. The vibration by chatter generated in cutting processes within machine tools is a relative motion between tools and workpieces. So, if the chatter occurs, the surface roughness and accuracy of workpieces will be deteriorate and it leads to the rapid wear of tools. The author intended to use the I /sab/RMS (current of root mean square) of current sigals and the movimg C.V. (coefficient of variation) of each phase for the detection method of chatter.
