This study aims to test the feasibility of combined use of EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) hydrodynamic model and WASP7.3 (Water Quality Analysis Program) model to improve accuracy of water quality predictions of the Yongdam Lake, Korea. The orthogonal curvilinear grid system was used for EFDC model to represent riverine shape of the study area. Relationship between volume, surface and elevation results were checked to verify if the grid system represents morphology of the lake properly. Monthly average boundary water quality conditions were estimated using the monthly monitored water quality data from Korean Ministry of Environment DB system. Monthly tributary flow rates were back-routed using dam discharge data and allocated in proportion to each basin area as direct measurements were not available. The optimum number of grid system was determined to be 372 horizontal cells and 10 vertical layers of the site for 1 year simulation of hydrodynamics and water quality out of iterative trials. Monthly observed BOD, TN, TP and Chl-a concentrations inside the lake were used for calibration of WASP7.3 model. This study shows that EFDC and WASP can be used in series successfully to improve accuracy in water quality modeling. However, it was observed that the amount of data to develop inflow water quality and flow rate boundary conditions and water quality data inside lake for calibration were not enough for accurate modeling. It is suggested that object-oriented data collection systems would be necessary to ensure accuracy of EFDC-WASP model application and thus for efficient lake water quality management strategy development.

This paper presents the results of recent nutrients measurement and analysis in relation to other environmental parameters such as temperature, salinity, AOU and pH in the South Sea, Korea. In summer, temperature showed stronger correlation with nutrients than salinity and also did the parameters related to biological activities such as pH and AOU. Implications of above results exemplify that primary producers in the vicinity of salt front actively consumed nutrients so that nutrients-salinity correlation is strongly modified in the salt front. Nutrient in winter showed significant correlation only with temperature. Nutrient distribution seems governed by the location of thermal front between vertically mixed cold water in northern area and warm waters flowing north. Due to weak biological activity in winter pH-nutrients correlation, which was strongest in summer ($R^2$ >0.6) dropped sharply in winter ($R^2$ <0.5). Depth integrated nitrate+nitrite, phosphate and silicate values are 321 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$, 23 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$, 637 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in summer and 261 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$, 31 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$, 742 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in winter, respectively. NIP values in summer exhibit phosphorus deficiency, however, winter situation is reversed for nitrogen. Nitrogen input via precipitation and riverine discharge in wet season seems potentially critical for maintaining the South Sea ecosystem.

Numerical model tests are done in order to evaluate impact zone of low salinity water on outer region of the developing Saemankeum reservoir. Also saline mixing processes are investigated f3r the inner reservoir with consideration of Mankyoung and Donjin riverine flood discharges when sea water is passing freely through gate. In these analyses 2-d ADCIRC, 3-d TIDED3D and CE-QUAL-ICM models are used. Through models tests, it is found that inner reservoir mixing process caused by inflow of outer sea water occurs gradually. It takes at least one month for complete mixing on Mankyoung part and 6 month on Dongjin part of the reservoir. When Sinsi or Garyeok gates are opened to control inner reservoir level, discharging velocities decrease exponentially from the gates, but show very strong currents of 0.5m/sec to the 10Km region apart. These results imply that hydrodynamic circulation and ecosystem of frontal region of the Saemankeum dike might be affected in amount by gate operations, since low saline inner waters are discharged periodically at ebb tide according to tidal level.

Suspended sediment concentration (SSC) is a crucial riverine parameter in terms that it can be utilized for analyzing sediment transport, stability assessment of river and structure and so on. However, in case of domestic, sediment discharge data are not enough because of using conventional sediment samplers. This study aimed at developing a practical technique for estimating suspended sediment concentration in high spatial and temporal resolution by building relationship between acoustic backscatter (or SNR) from H-ADCP with actually observed data using LISST-100X. In this regard, a dedicated correction algorithm was proposed particularly for the adapted H-ADCP (SonTek SL-3000). Then, a SNR-SSC relation was built based upon a real-scale field experiment, where both H-ADCP and LISST-100X were concurrently operated to observe SNR and SSC, respectively. The coefficient of determination for the developed regression equation of SNR-SSC relation was around 0.85~0.88, thereby the relation could be evaluated to be highly correlated. The result of this study might be potentially applied for real-time and simultaneous observation of SSC when H-ADCP could be applied.
Long-term data (Ministry of Environment Water Quality Monitoring data) of phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) and water quality were analyzed to investigate trends in biomass of the primary producers and water quality for the estuarine systems in Korea: Sumjin River, Han River, Asan Lake- Bay, Youngsan River, Keum River and Nakdong River. The literatures were also reviewed to examine the characteristics of phytoplankton biomass and water quality in the estuarine systems. The Sumjin River estuary, the single estuary without a dike in Korea showed the characteristics similar to other typical estuarine systems. Phytoplankton biomass was high during the fall at transitional regions (5 ${\sim}$ 15 psu) after riverine freshwater inputs were increased in summer. Concentrations of the nitrate and silicate were increased with the high river discharge rates. Phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentrations were high during spring at the lower regions in the Han River whereas phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentrations were high during spring at the upper regions in the Youngsan River. Phytoplankton biomass was the highest in the Asan Lake and nutrient concentrations were high at the upper region of the lake. In Nakdong River, phytoplankton biomass was high during winter and the biomass was slightly higher at upper region than at lower region. Long-term trends showed that total nitrogen and total phosphorus were mostly increased in the river systems. Implications of these results relevant to the water quality management for the river systems were also discussed.

During the period of heavy rain from 2002 to 2004, the characteristics of the inflow, temporal and spatial fluctuations of high turbid water according to thermal stratification were studied on the Andong Reservoir which is the largest artificial lake in the Nakdong River basin, Korea. Thermal stratification was formed in June. Its structure determined to the pathway of inflowing turbid water and has affected by the transportation of high turbid water. Regardless of the time and amount of inflow, the high turbid water showed the shape of underflow at the riverine zone, separated from the bottom at the transition zone and moved to the lacustrine zone with the shape of density current. The plunging point depended on the time and amount of inflow. The distributions of thermal stratification and DO concentrations were changed by inflowing discharge. Two thermoclines and minimum DO layers were found out existing at metalimnion in a specific time, respectively. The layer of high turbid water which formed with the thickness of 20 m at the maximum below the depth of 15 m moved toward dam. Not settled to the bottom, the newly formed layer was discharged through the intake-outlet and dispersed into all layers by the circulation in the fall.

Numerical flow simulation models in the riverine environments have been widely utilized for analyzing flow dynamics in various degrees in researches and practical applications. However, most of the simulated results have been validated based on the data from indoor experimental models or very limited in-situ measurements. Therefore, it has been required to more accurately validate the performance of the numerical models in terms of the detailed field observations. In particular, it was also hard to validate the performances of the existing numerical models in the real meandered river channels that encompass more sophisticated flow and geometric structures. Recently, advancements of the modern flow measuring instrumentations such as acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) enabled us to efficiently acquire the detailed flow field in the broad range of river channels, thus that it became to be possible to accurately validate any numerical models with the field observations. In this study, based on the detailed flow measurements in a actual meandered river channel using ADCP, we validated FaSTMECH model in iRIC in terms of water surface elevation, which is relatively new but began to get highlighted in the research areas. As the validation site, a meandering channel in River Experiment Center of KICT was chosen, which has 6.5 m of width, 0.38m of flow depth, 1.54 m3/s of flow discharge, 0.61 m/s of mean flow velocity, and 1.2 of sinuosity. As results, whereas the FaSTMECH precisely simulated water surface elevation, simulated velocity field in the bend did not match well with ADCP dataset.
Naeseong Stream is a sand-bed river that flows through the northern area of Gyeongbuk province. It is characterized by dynamic sandy bedforms developed in response to the seasonal hydrological fluctuation and by its unique riverine landscape called "white river." However, changes including construction of Yeongju Dam from 2010 and the extensive vegetation establishment around 2015 occurred along the Naeseong Stream. This paper aims to analyze climate, hydrology, and water quality as factors and to examine the possibility of channel changes accordingly. The second least precipitation during the last 60 years happened in 2015, which led to the lowest peak discharge in 50 years. The sediment characteristics of Naeseong Stream were not significantly different along the upstream and downstream reaches, but it was confirmed that annual minimum water level of the stream decreased continuously regardless of the dam construction. This suggests that intermittent drought and change in water quality are likely to provide favorable conditions for riparian vegetation establishment and the resulting physical changes have affected riverbed degradation. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct diversified monitoring in connection with river vegetation change in order to analyze the causes of river changes.

The purposes of this study is to investigate the possibility of planting trees at space land in the riverside. The space land is for the green space. Calculating the plantable space in the representation section and the flood flowing stability of the existing banks based on the hydrological and meteorological data of the Kap-Chon riverbasin located in Tae-jon, the following results are drawn. (1) The flood discharges in each flow section are $698.7m^3/s$ in section 1, $654.6m^3/s$ in section 2, and $1353.3m^3/s$ in section 3 during 100 years recurrence interval. Because the designed-flood discharges in those sections are $1719.9m^3/s$, $2119.7m^3/s$, and $1512.8m^3/s$ respectively, safety for flood flowing is sufficient in existing banks. (2) The possible clearance for planting trees is 1.80m in section 1, 3.90m in section 2, and 0.01m in section 3. Planting clearance is enough in section 1 and 2. However, planting should be planned after estimating a rise-height due to the bridge piers, because many piers under riverine-highway are now on the construction in section 2. The section 3 does not have sufficient clearance for planting trees, but the planting is possible after getting enough flow area with slope by cutting the terrace land on the river artificially heightened. (3) In case of planting a tree 70cm diameter in $1m^2$ in section 1, the water level increases by 0.60m. Planting a tree in a $48m^2$ area increases the water level by 0.90m. Considering that plantable clearance is 1.8m in section 1, it is sufficient to flow safely. But if the trees are planted so compactly from the upper stream, expected heavy resistance is expected due to caught materials on the trees. So, trees have to be planted widely in upper streams but compactedly in lower streams. (4) The river width without changing, Kap-Chon's flow channel can be snaked in accordance with the nature law the wide terrace land in the riverside. Decreased flow area due to planting trees will be compensated by the inclination of terrace land. And, it is theoretically proved that the flood discharge is safe even though the terrace land on the river is parked similar to the nature. Planting trees in the terrace land of the Kap-chon river to the extent that flood flowing is not adversely affected, we can get the enjoyable park to citizens not spending expensive cost. It also contributes to the recovery of ecosystem, which gives the natural beauty of river and shade to citizens and becomes good natural-educational places for children.
Understanding of the two-dimensional velocity field is crucial in terms of analyzing various hydrodynamic and fluvial processes in the riverine environments. Until recently, many numerical models have played major roles of providing such velocity field instead of in-situ flow measurements, because there were limitations in instruments and methodologies suitable for efficiently measuring in the broad range of river reaches. In the last decades, however, the advent of modernized instrumentations started to revolutionize the flow measurements. Among others, acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) became very promising especially for accurately assessing streamflow discharge, and they are also able to provide the detailed velocity field very efficiently. Thus it became possible to capture the velocity field only with field observations. Since most of ADCPs measurements have been mostly conducted in the cross-sectional lines despite their capabilities, it is still required to apply appropriate interpolation methods to obtain dense velocity field as likely as results from numerical simulations. However, anisotropic nature of the meandering river channel could have brought in the difficulties for applying simple spatial interpolation methods for handling dynamic flow velocity vector, since the flow direction continuously changes over the curvature of the channel shape. Without considering anisotropic characteristics in terms of the meandering, therefore, conventional interpolation methods such as IDW and Kriging possibly lead to erroneous results, when they dealt with velocity vectors in the meandering channel. Based on the consecutive ADCP cross-sectional measurements in the meandering river channel. For this purpose, the geographic coordinate with the measured ADCP velocity was converted from the conventional Cartesian coordinate (x, y) to a curvilinear coordinate (s, n). The results from application of A-VIM showed significant improvement in accuracy as much as 41.5% in RMSE.
