The effects of foundation scour depth and riverbed condition on the natural frequencies of a typical cross-river integral abutment bridge have been studied. The conventional operational modal analysis technique has been employed in order to extract the modal properties of the bridge and the results have been used in the Finite Element (FE) model updating procedure. Two tests have been carried out in two different levels of water and wet condition of the riverbed. In the first test, the riverbed was in dry condition for two subsequent years and the level of water was 10 meter lower than the natural riverbed. In the second test, the river was opened to water flow from the upstream dam and the level of water was 2 meter higher than the natural riverbed. The results of these two tests have also been used in order to find to what extend the presence of water flow in the river and saturation of the surrounding soil affect the bridge natural frequencies. Finally, the updated FE model of the bridge has been applied in a series of parametric analyses incorporating the effect of piles' relative scour depth on the bridge natural frequency of the first four vibration modes.
The scouring process is complex and subject to many factors. Recently, experiments for real-time bridge scour monitoring have been active as means for a more reliable scour prediction. Riverbed materials are an important factor in bridge scouring; therefore, an accurate estimation of riverbed material is critical in predicting a scour. As a part of this approach, an ultrasonic sensor, which can not only detect river bottom during floods but can also be installed lose to the underwater structures, was developed. This sensor is able to map the river bottom using an ultrasonic waves with the characteristics of the returning wave, reflected from an object or bottom ground. The reflected wave is unique according to the situations, or materials below. Therefore, it would be possible to identify the consisting materials of a riverbed if we could reveal each characteristic in the received signals. In this study, a preliminary experiment was performed in the laboratory to identify and classify received signals, which is unique to each material. The analysis of this experiment gives the graph, which makes it possible to identify materials of the river bottom through the ultrasonic signals. The proposed graph was verified through a comparison with the actual field data measured in river.
The assessment of erosional and depositional patterns near bridge piers is essential to understand the fluvial scour process. Geophysical surveys are particularly effective in determining the riverbed variations in a river and may also be of value for obtaining the previous scour history below the riverbed profile. In this study, GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar), as a non-destructive geophysical technique, was used to assess the existence and depth of existing and infilled scour thickness, streambed materials, and pre- and post- scour surfaces at the bridge piers in Han River, June 2002 and October 2002. The GPR acquisition system used for obtaining profiles of the shallow subsurface deposits was a portable GSSI SIR 2000 system with 100 and 400 MHz antennas. The GPR data obtained along the 24 bridge piers in the flow direction of the river and in the surroundings of 5 bridge piers were compared and presented in this study. It is concluded that GPR surveys can be effective in determining both the water depth and sub-bottom geological structure near the bridge piers and abutments provided that the appropriate instrumentation and operational procedures are applied.
In this study, a realtime bridge scour monitoring system was installed and operated to measure the real scour depths in relatively hard and rocky bottom. And riverbed change at before and after flood was investigated by GPR(Ground Penetrating Radar) to check the rationality of measured values. As the result of this study, it was revealed the inaccuracy of equilibrium scour depth estimation through the bridge scout equations because most of the equations do not reflect the differences of geological characteristics, evaluated the real scour depths considering both bed and flow conditions.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of riverbed variation due to the sediment protection weir located on the estuary of the main stream of Taehwa river using I-D finite difference model, HEC-6 model, and the followings are the results of estimating sediment transport rate, amount of scour or deposition, and accumulated amount of deposit according to before and after of the sediment protection weir removal with various flow rates in the channel. Ackers-White transport function produced the greatest sediment transport rate while Meyer-Peter showed the smallest sediment transport rate at the most down stream area of the watershed through the sediment transport rate analyses for various flow rates according to the existence or nonexistence of the sediment protection weir. Toffaleti's and Colby transport function were closest to the average value, and the difference among the results of the sediment transport functions showed up to 8~9 times. Duboy's transport function produced the greatest riverbed variation while Toffaleti's showed the smallest variation through the riverbed variation analyses according to the existence or nonexistence of the sediment protection weir. Yang's was closest to the average value, and the difference among the results of the riverbed variation analyses ranged from 1.4 times to 11 times. It is thought that a sediment transport function must be selected very carefully with respect to the criteria of sediment yield estimation because the analysis results of the sediment transport rate and riverbed variation according to flow rates showed significant differences among the sediment transport functions, and the differences of sediment transport rate and riverbed variation according to the various sediment transport functions decreased as the flow rate increased.

The existing methods to estimate the maximum scour depth in the bend of steep gravel bed channel have been evaluated by the hydraulic movable-bed experiments. In the $90^{\circ}$ bend steep-slope channel paved with the fluvial gravels which are uniform in size and have a mean diameter of 43mm, the maximum scour depths due to the flow discharge and the gradient of bed slope have been investigated and compared with the scour depth computed from the equations. The local scour has occurred in conditions that the bed slope is steeper than 0.02 and the $F_r$ is greater than 0.95. Except Lacey's equation and Zeller's equation, the existing methods computing the maximum scour depth overestimate the maximum scour depth in the steep channel with the very coarse gravel bed. However, Lacey's equation with the bed material size and Zeller's equation considering the approach channel gradient and the bend angle may be relatively used to estimate the scour depth in bend of the steep gravel-bed river.

This study is an experimental analysis for local scour of the riverbed at pier. The basic equation with dimensionless elements(Pier Reynolds Number, Dimensionless Turbulence Intensity) is derived through dimensional analysis. After testing the goodness of fit of data, the coefficients are determined by multiple regression analysis. In the region where the value of the attack angle is near 20 degrees, there exists a transition region where the slope of equation with Pier Reynolds Number changes from positive to negative and that of equation with Dimensionless Turbulence Intensity changes from negative to positive adversely. As a result of testing the equation suggested on this study by using the data of the Institute of National Construction, it is found that the scour depth and width at pier can be predicted approximately.

Recently, Heavy rains and super typhoons occurred by climate change cause a lot of damage in Korea. In order to reduce such damage, various types of river maintenance projects are being promoted, but it is difficult to maintain the balance of rivers in Korea with distinct flood and dry seasons. In particular, river structures installed as a river maintenance project cause various problems such as scouring of structures and their foundations during floods and river bed changes. In order to reduce such bed scour, various vanes are installed in the bend of the river, and various bed scour reduction effects appear depending on the size, arrangement, and shape of the vanes. The vane regenerates the secondary flow in the opposite direction to the secondary flow generated by the centrifugal force, thereby reducing scour around the outer bed and promoting deposition. The theory of this study uses the governing equation applying the continuity equation that satisfies the law of conservation of mass and the momentum equation that satisfies the conservation of momentum, and measures the overall average flow velocity change rate according to design factors to investigate the effect of vanes under various conditions. Both the average and cross-sectional flow velocities decreased in both the trapezoidal vane and the square vane. In addition, vanes installed perpendicularly or inclined to the direction of river flow generate a secondary flow in the opposite direction to the secondary flow generated by centrifugal force, thereby canceling the secondary flow of centrifugal force, so the effect of the vane appears.

A drop structure, one of the representative river-crossing structures, is constructed to stabilize a riverbed. On the other hand, the structure interrupts the continuity of the river and causes the destruction of the hydro-ecological environment. Therefore, laboratory experiments of a natural type of drop structure with low differences were performed, and the empirical formula of a local scour hole is proposed. Four experimental flow rates were tested for various types of the drop structure models with 28 test cases. Based on the scour test, it was confirmed that the maximum scour depth occurs rather than the result of applying the previously proposed scour depth formulae. Correlation analysis of the major factors of scour hole at the downstream of the drop structure revealed a strong correlation between the upstream flow characteristics, drop structure height, and total crossing length of the drop model. In addition, the depth and length estimation formula of the maximum scour hole were proposed using the dimensionless variables and validated. In the future, it is also expected that more accurate scour prediction and calculation can be derived by conducting experimental studies and numerical analysis considering the various bed materials and flow conditions.

Since the industrialization in the 1960s, Korea has been expanding its transportation infrastructure, such as building bridges. Owing to bridge construction, studies on stability review have been carried out, and stability-securing technology has been developed. On the other hand, these were applied mainly to the upper part of the bridge, so applications to the lower part are limited. In particular, scour at the bridge pier causes erosion in the riverbed and bridge collapse. Hence, prevention studies and countermeasures are needed. In this study, an empirical formula was developed to evaluate the scour depth of a bridge, which was calculated through multiple linear regression analysis using the hydraulic model study data conducted in previous studies. The formula, which had a value of 0.91, was applied to the model test data that was not used for development to verify the developed formula. When the pier scour depths were compared in 23 cases, the error rate was less than 20% in 16 cases (70%). The empirical formula developed in this study is applicable to pier scour-depth calculations. Further research will be needed to develop a more accurate empirical formula for pier scour-depth calculations, and it is expected to reduce bridge damage caused by scour.
