Safety at sea continues to be an important topic for research. The factors that contribute to safety issues are often complex and unclear. Lack of non-technical skills in such areas as communication, teamworking, situational awareness, decision making etc. are well documented as directly affecting safety in high risk work settings such as on board merchant vessels. Competence in non-technical skills can be affected by various habits and circumstances that influence a worker and result in either positive thinking and behaviour or negative thinking and behaviour. Negative thinking can cause stress, anger, frustration; loneliness etc. and this can possibly result in behaviour or actions that undermine the safety of crew and ship. Factors that may contribute to these negative thoughts and behaviours are many and varied and this paper will be looking at one aspect: mobile phone use. In the Republic of Korea, dependency on mobile phones is uniquely high. Maritime students are also susceptible to such dependency and this paper will demonstrate that the symptoms associated with mobile phone addiction and dependency, and in particular the symptoms of withdrawal, are important factors that need to be mitigated in order to improve safety at sea. Although the benefits of mobile phones are many it will be suggested that over-reliance, dependency or addiction can result in negative thinking or behaviour that may directly or indirectly contribute to the factors that cause incidents and accidents at sea. It will be suggested that the most appropriate method of dealing with this problem is twofold: firstly, through training at the educational level and secondly, by encouraging the shipping industry and government to invest more into providing seafarers with better access to the communication methods that they are used to on shore in order to improve work conditions.
In order to secure pedestrians' right to walk, we have up-cycled second hand mobile phones to overcome limitations of the existing survey methods, analysis methods, and diagnosis to reduce pedestrian traffic accidents. Second hand mobile phones were up-cycled to produce mobile CCTVs and installed in areas where pedestrian deaths rate is high to secure image data sets for the period of more than 24 hours. It was analyzed by applying image visualization technology and clouding reporting technology, and more precise and accurate results were derived through modeling based on artificial intelligence learning and GIS-based diagnostic guidance. As a result, it was possible to analyze the risk factors and number of pedestrian safety, and even factors that were not known in the existing method could be derived. In addition, the traffic accident risk index was derived by converting data into one year to verify whether second hand mobile phone up-cycling mobile CCTV will be an objective tool for finding pedestrian risk factors. Up-cycling mobile CCTV of second hand mobile phones newly applied through research can be used as a new tool to find pedestrian risk factors, and it can be used as a service to protect the safety of the traffic vulnerable other than pedestrians.

The proportion of buildings over 30 years old in Korea has increased, from 29.0% in 2005 to 37.8% in 2019. These old buildings were built during a time in which there was a lack of building-related safety standards in areas such as fire safety performance. Worse, during their years of use, many such old buildings have had illegal changes and extensions made, making them more vulnerable in terms of safety. Fire safety investigations are being conducted to prevent large-scale disasters in multi-use buildings, but no investigation has been conducted at the regional district level, where small-scale old buildings are concentrated. Therefore, to identify fire risk factors in the old building district where old buildings are concentrated, the composition characteristics of the buildings were first analyzed. To examine the spatial characteristics of old building districts in order to derive fire risk factors, the results of this analysis based on the structure, use, roof type, and year of approval for use are as follows. It was found through our analysis that as of the date of approval for the use of the building, the main structure of the building has the greatest impact.

In the event of an emergency such as facility shutdown during process operation, the by-product gas must be urgently discharged to the vent stack to prevent leakage, fire, and explosion. At this time, the explosion drop value of the released by-product gas is calculated using ISO 10156 formula, which is 27.7 vol%. Therefore, it does not correspond to flammable gas because it is less than 13% of the explosion drop value, which is the standard for flammable gas defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and since the explosion drop value is high, it can be seen that the risk of fire explosion is low even if it is discharged urgently with the vent stock. As a result of calculating the range of explosion hazard sites for hydrogen gas discharged to the Bent Stack according to KS C IEC 60079-10-1, 23 meters were calculated. Since hydrogen is lighter than air, electromechanical devices should not be installed within 23 meters of the upper portion of the Bent Stack, and if it is not possible, an explosion-proof electromechanical device suitable for type 1 of dangerous place should be installed. In addition, the height of the stack should be at least 5 meters so that the diffusion of by-product gas is facilitated in case of emergency discharge, and it should be installed so that there are no obstacles around it.
Recently, road subsidence has been increasing in urban areas, threatening the safety of citizens. In the lower part of the road, various road facilities such as water supply and drainage pipelines and telecommunication facilities are buried, and the deterioration of the facilities causes the road subsidence. In particular, in the case of old sewer pipes which are attracting attention as a main cause of road subsidence, the management of sewer pipe replacement, repair and reinforcement is being performed depending on the burial year. Therefore, in this study, we tried to suggest a reliable road subsidence risk assessment method considering various sewer specifications and surrounding environment information and CCTV exploration result and GPR exploration result.

Recent persistent coastal developments have expanded recreational areas and enhanced accessibility. However, this growth has also led to a rise in safety incidents. These accident factors can be divided into human-made and natural types. The latter is comprised of dynamic factors like waves, tides, sea fogs, and winds. While institutions like the Korea Meteorological Administration and the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency already offer data on these dynamic factors, the resolution is often insufficient for a precise assessment of localized risks. In this study, to overcome these limitations, we utilized the dynamic information from existing open systems to construct a high-resolution numerical simulation. Through this, we developed an automated module to predict dynamic factors in localized coastal activity areas. Particularly during the module's construction, we compared and reviewed the numerical prediction results for waves with observed wave heights.
This paper presents a vital area identification (VAI) method based on the current fault tree analysis (FTA) and probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) techniques for the physical protection of nuclear power plants. A structured framework of a top event prevention set analysis (TEPA) application to the VAI of nuclear power plants is also delineated. One of the important processes for physical protection in a nuclear power plant is VAI that is a process for identifying areas containing nuclear materials, structures, systems or components (SSCs) to be protected from sabotage, which could directly or indirectly lead to core damage and unacceptable radiological consequences. A software VIP (Vital area Identification Package based on the PSA method) is being developed by KAERI for the VAI of nuclear power plants. Furthermore, the KAERI fault tree solver FTREX (Fault Tree Reliability Evaluation eXpert) is specialized for the VIP to generate the candidates of the vital areas. FTREX can generate numerous MCSs for a huge fault tree with the lowest truncation limit and all possible prevention sets.
Currently, approx. 10,532 turnouts were installed on the KR line, of which 3,644 turnouts were installed in the main line where high speed operation is performed. This shows that it is necessary to improve the performance of turnout as one of vulnerable areas for the safe operation of a train. Even though the number of railway accidents is decreasing every year due to the renewal of railway facilities, there are still many factors that cause the occurrence of an accident. In particular, an incident in turnout area does not only have a high risk of a serious accident but also affect the operation of a train on the adjacent track in most cases, and consequently a big social loss is expected due to the delay in train operation as well as the loss of life and property. The objective of this study is to examine the accidents occurred in turnout area that is one of typical vulnerable areas over the past ten years, on the basis of the results, and to take an appropriate measure by finding out the major cause of accidents in turnout area so that a systematic safety system can be established to prevent or reduce accidents in turnout area.

Following the development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, the scope of application of IoT technology is expanding to industrial safety areas that detect and prevent possible risks in outdoor environments in advance, away from improving the convenience of living in indoor environments. Although this expansion of IoT service provides many advantages, it also causes security problems such as data leakage and modulation, so research on security response strategies is being actively carried out. In this paper, the IoT-based road construction risk management system in outdoor environment is proposed as a research subject. As a result of investigating the security vulnerabilities of the low-power wide-area (LPWA, BLE) communication protocol applied to the research targets, the security vulnerabilities were identified in terms of confidentiality, integrity, and availability, which are the three major elements of information security, and countermeasures for each vulnerability were proposed. This study is meaningful in investigating and analyzing possible vulnerabilities in the operation of the IoT-based risk management system and proposing practical security guidelines for each vulnerability.
This study set out to identify crime vulnerable areas with the GIS spatial analysis technique for the prediction of crimes. Crime vulnerable areas were extracted from the statistics of crimes with the GIS hotspot analysis technique and the inverse distance weighted(IDW) method applied to different crimes according to places and use districts. The scope of surveillance and weight were calculated for each of CPTED surveillance elements including CCTV, streetlamp, patrol division, and police substation. Maps of crime vulnerable areas were overlapped one after another to make a CPTED-based one expressed in four grades(safety, attention, warning, and risk).
