Growth and Yield Responses of Soybean under Night Illumination at Different Growth Stages (콩의 생육단계별 야간조명에 따른 생육 및 수량 반응)

  • This experiment conducted to know physiological characteristics and stress effect on different growth stage of soybean by night illumination. Soybean variety, Shinpaldalkong 2, Keumjungkong and Muhankong were treated by night illumination with 20~30 Lux (0.05~0.08W m$^{-2}$ , 0.24~0.36 $\mu$㏖ S$^{-1}$ m$^{-2}$ ) for 15 days at six different growth stage, seedling, pre-floral initiation, post-floral initiation, pod filling and seed ripening stage. Night illumination delayed flowering to 2~8 days compared to control. Delay of flowering by night illumination severely effected at the pre-floral initiation stage. Stem length was increased all the night illumination treatments except the pod filling stage. Number of nodes in Shinpaldalkong 2 and Keumjungkong 1 were increased until before post-floral initiation stage but in Muhankong were increased until after post-floral initiation stage by night illumination treatments. Number of pods were decreased all the night illumination treatments except seedling stage compared with control. Yield decreased all the treatments and severe the loss rate degree showed the order of prefloral initiation, post-floral initiation, seedling and flowering stage.

Growth, Flowering, and Ripening Seed Characteristics of Seedling Cacti, Astrophytum asterias and Astrophytum myriostigma (선인장 Astrophytum asterias와 Astrophytum myriostigma의 생육, 개화 및 종자형성 특성)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the propagation system by seed to check growth, flowering, and making seed of four-year-old seedling cactus of potted Astrophytum asterias 'Nudum', A. asterias 'Super Kabuto', and A. myriostigma 'Nudum'. Plant height and width of Astrophytum asterias 'Nudum' and A. asterias 'Super Kabuto' was 5.3 to 5.5 cm, and 2.5 cm. However, plant height and width of A. myriostigma 'Nudum' was 7.6 cm and 5.6 cm as divided into 8 sections of body. In A. asterias 'Nudum', the mean seeded pod from April to September was 37.0% and the number of seeds in a pod was 43.0. In A. asterias 'Super Kabuto', the mean seeded pod from April to September was 22.5% and the number of seeds in a pod was 26.2. However, the mean seeded pod of A. myriostigma 'Nudum' from April to September was 32.3% and the number of seeds in a pod was 57.4. Especially, the seeded pod and the number of seeds in a pod of A. asterias 'Nudum' in July was the highest, 72.0% and 66.0. The sib crossing obtained much more seeded pods and the number of seeds per pod than that of selfing in the Astrophytum. The self crossing was formed from 9.0 to 20.0% of seeded pod, and 12.0 to 16.0 seeds in a pod. However, sib crossing was formed 60.0% seeded pod and 68.0 seeds in a pod on July of A. myriostigma 'Nudum'.

Effect of Seed Moisture Content on Seed Storage of Dehisced Ginseng Seeds (종자 수분함량에 따른 개갑 인삼 종자의 저장성 연구)

  • Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) is a perennial plant and propagates by seeds, and those need after-ripening for germination. To be ready for climate change and to ensure a stable seed supply, the technique for storing seeds in short-term and long-term in large quantities is required. In this study, dehisced ginseng seeds from two locations, batch #1 and batch #2, were stored at -3.5℃ with different moisture content, and after 3, 15, and 27 months of storage, the percentage of radicle emergence and shoot emergence were measured. After 3 months, radicle emergence and shoot emergence were normal only when the seed moisture content was more than 35%, and overall, germination was higher in batch #2 than in batch #1. After 15 months, the partially dehydrated seeds, with a moisture content between 45 to 54%, showed the highest germination rates, and most of the undried seeds were spoiled and failed to germinate. Seeds with moisture content lower than 25% had poor germination, too. The partially dehydrated seeds also succeeded in germination and growth in the soil after 15 months of storage, but deteriorated after one more 1 year, too. In summary, ginseng seeds look like have temperate recalcitrant seed characteristics, and partial dehydration allows extension of seed longevity.

Lodging Related Traits of Rice Plants as Affected by ′KIM -112′ Application (KIM-112 처리가 벼 도복관련형질에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to obtain basic information on the lodging characteristics and yield components of rice plants by new anti-lodging reagent 'KIM-112' (3%, Wp) application at 30 days before heading (DBH) to 5 DBH under two dosage levels (lg 2g, a. i. /10a) at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1989. Culm length was shortened by 10-17% at 1g, a. i. /10a and by 16-23% at 2g of KIM -112 applications. The shortening effect of internode was different by dosages and application times: 2g treatment was greater effect than 19 and early application resulted in shortening of lower internode while this was upper internode at the late application. There were positive correlation between culm length and lodging index, the 1st and the 4th internode lengths had on important effect to lodging index. Thickness of culm wall, culm diameter and weight of basal part of culm were not affected by KIM-112 application. However anti-lodging characters improved by increasing the breaking weight and by decreasing the moment. Lodging index was related to breaking weight, moment and weight of panicle. Heading date by KIM-112 application was delayed one to four days and number of grains per panicle was decreased by shortened panicle length as compared with untreated control, but yield capacity was high a little because of improvement ripening ratio by no lodging.

  • Experiments were carried out to study the effectiveness of METAP as a slow released fertilizer on the growth, grain yield and its components of paddy rice, and to compare its effects with those of single fertilizers in the fields of 3 Crop Experiment Stations and 7 provincial Offices of Rural Development. The effectiveness of METAP seems to be different according to the physical and chemical characteristics of soil, the time of application, climatic conditions, variety and cultural methods. Therefore, the experimental results obtained from the above experiment are summurized as follows: 1. When METAP was applied into sandy soil, grain yield was increased due to increase of the number of panicles, and split application of METAP was more effective than basal only. However, in the reclaimed soil, not heavily percolated soil and fertile soil, no differences were observed between MET AP and single fertilizer applied plot. 2. When a rice variety, 'TONGIL' which is sensitive to the low temperature and produce higher yield in the early transplanting, was not transplanted early and air temperature is relatively lower during the ripening stage, the percentage of ripened grains and 1,000 grains weight were not higher in the METAP applied plots than in the single fertilizer applied plots.

Computer Vision Approach for Phenotypic Characterization of Horticultural Crops (컴퓨터 비전을 활용한 토마토, 파프리카, 멜론 및 오이 작물의 표현형 특성화)

  • This study explored computer vision methods using the OpenCV open-source library to characterize the phenotypes of various horticultural crops. In the case of tomatoes, image color was examined to assess ripeness, while support vector machine (SVM) and histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) methods effectively identified ripe tomatoes. For sweet pepper, we visualized the color distribution and used the Gaussian mixture model for clustering to analyze its post-harvest color characteristics. For the quality assessment of netted melons, the LAB (lightness, a, b) color space, binary images, and depth mapping were used to measure the net patterns of the melon. In addition, a combination of depth and color data proved successful in identifying flowers of different sizes and distances in cucumber greenhouses. This study highlights the effectiveness of these computer vision strategies in monitoring the growth and development, ripening, and quality assessment of fruits and vegetables. For broader applications in agriculture, future researchers and developers should enhance these techniques with plant physiological indicators to promote their adoption in both research and practical agricultural settings.

Quality Characteristics of Factory-Style and Handmade-Style Ssamjang (공장 및 수공업 생산 쌈장의 품질 특성)

  • This study investigated the quality characteristics of factory-style ssamjang (FSS) and commercial handmade-style ssamjang (HSS) products. Moisture, crude protein, and crude fat contents were significantly higher in the HSS groups (49.37~62.12%, 9.39~13.46%, and 4.40~8.35%) than the FSS groups (41.94~45.83%, 7.50~9.09%, and 1.81~3.36%). Salt content was higher in the HSS groups (6.33~11.18%) than the FSS groups (6.10~7.57%). Moreover, the average salt content (7.51%) of the HSS groups and the FSS groups was lower than that of commercial ssamjang (8.73%). Hunter's color value was also significantly higher in the FSS groups. However, free sugar, organic acid, and free amino acids contents varied greatly between the FSS groups and the HSS groups, which was likely due to the different manufacturing method, ripening degree of doenjang and the main material used for ssamjang.

Seed Viability and Growth Characteristics of Eclipta prostrata (L.) L. (한련초의 종자생존력(種子生存力) 및 생장특성(生長特性))

  • Several experiments were conducted to investigate the achene viability and growth characteristics of Eclipta prostrata (L.) L. No dormancy and no after-ripening requirement were found for E. prostrata achenes. When achenes were stored at room temperature, germination did not decrease with up to 5 months storage. Large differences in loss of viability of E. prostrata achenes occurred when different dehydration methods were used. Immediate dehydration resulted in high viability, but slow dehydration resulted in severe loss of viability. Achene viability at shallow burial depths (5 and 10 cm deep) was lower under upland soil conditions than under lowland soil conditions. Seedling growth was greatly reduced when flooding to a depth of 10 cm occurred at or before the 4-leaf stage. Flooding after the 4-leaf stage stimulated stem elongation. Branching started from the second week and usually terminated at the tenth week. Leaf size was determined by the branch which are related to the assimilate supply. Flowering of E. prostrata started during the fifth week after emergence, and mature achenes were produced from the sixth week. Ten to 14 days were needed for the achenes to mature. About 14,000 achenes were produced on each plant. Achene production per week increased from the sixth week to the tenth week and thereafter it declined. The average number of achenes per inflorescence decreased with delay in flowering.

Quality Characteristics of Apple Jangachi Manufactured by Farmhouse and Commercial Jangachi (농가생산 사과장아찌와 시판 장아찌의 품질 특성)

  • Quality factors which characterize 11 kinds of farm-manufactured apple Jangachi and commercial Jangachi, have been studied in order to provide a guideline to improve the quality and marketing strategy of farm-manufactured pickled apples. Moisture content ranged from 74% to 84% and 81% to 91% in Doenjang Jangachi and vinegar Jangachi, respectively; 38% to 64% in Kochujang Jangachi; 57% to 64% in radish Kochujang Jangachi. Moisture content was 89% in Doenjang Jangachi. Even though moisture content of apple Kochujang Jangachi indicated 48% which is lower than that of radish Jangachi, it was higher than that of a persimmon pickled in Kochujang (38%) and that of Japanese apricot Jangachi (49%). pH and titratable acidity, two indicators used to determine the appropriate ripening period of Jangachi, were pH 3.4~5.6, 0.03~0.14%, respectively. The pH ranged from 5.2 to 5.6 in radish Jangachi; 3.4 to 4.1 in Cucumber Jangachi. pH of persimmon Jangachi, Japanese apricot Jangachi and apple Jangachi showed 4.1, 3.5 and 4.1, respectively. Compared with the pH of traditional Jangachi (3.03~5.36), pH of all of the above Jangachi fall into an appropriate range. The brix of apple Jangachi (30%) was 12% to 18% higher than that of Kochujang radish Jangachi, but it was relatively lower than that of persimmon Jangachi (39%) and that of Japanese apricot Jangachi (49%). Salinity of Jangachi varied depending on which marinating material was used. Salinity in the descending order according to each marinating material demonstrated Kanjang (6% to 13%), Doenjang (7%), Kochujang (3% to 4%). Salinity of apple Jangachi was 3.28% which was relatively lower than that of commercial Jangachi which used either Kanjang or Doenjang as its marinating material. Chromaticity test shows that the brightness value of apple Jangachi (54.70) was similar to that of cucumber Jangachi (50.86, 56.02); the redness value and yellowness of apple Jangachi (16.21 and 26.78) were higher than the redness value (7.27 to 11.23) and the yellowness value (10.62 to 14.69) of radish Kochujang Jangachi. Sensory Characteristics value of apple Jangachi, along with radish and cucumber Jangachi in its color, odor and taste (7.00, 7.50, 7.00, respectively) placed high on the list implying higher preference. However, overall preference value of apple Jangachi was 6.83 which was lower than that of Japanese apricot Jangachi or that of radish Jangachi. The result can be explained by the tendency of people preferring crispy Jangachi and points out that the texture of apple Jangachi needs to be improved to gain popularity. Furthermore, for increased sales of apple Jangachi as a niche product, more rigorous market testing is required.

Comparison of Fruit Characteristics of 'Fuji'/M.26 in Response to Ethephon Treatment and Combined Treatment of Ethephon and CaCl2 During Maturing Stages (Ethephon 단용처리와 Ethephon 및 염화칼슘 혼합처리에 따른 사과 'Fuji'/M.26의 성숙기 과실특성 비교)

  • The harvest time of the late-ripening 'Fuji' apple (Malus × domestica) is variable, depending on the coloration of the fruit skin. Ethephon, a plant growth regulator, promotes the ethylene production and induces physiological responses associated with fruit maturation in climacteric fruit crops, such as apples. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ethephon treatment on fruit characteristics after fruit enlargement, with the objective of proposing an economical and stable harvest control method for 'Fuji'/M.26 apples. Fruit characteristics were assessed at 10-days intervals following the application of 100 mg/L ethephon and mixture of 100 mg/L ethephon and 0.5% CaCl2 at 145 days after full bloom (DAFB). Starch contents of ethephon-treated (ET) and ethephon with CaCl2-treated (EC) apples began to decrease from 155 DAFB, and the starch contents of ET and EC at 10 days before harvest were similar to those of control at harvest time. Red coloration of fruit skin in EC was lower compared to ET but higher than control. The average fruit firmness was low in ET, while the control and EC exhibited similar levels of firmness. Fruit sugar acid ratios did not show significant differences between treatments. However, the titratable acidity of EC was significantly lower than that of the control at 10 days before harvest. Moreover, fruit sugar acid ratio of ET and EC at 10 days before harvest in 2021 was similar to their sugar acid ratio at harvest time. Therefore, it was thought that fruit maturation and skin coloration could be accelerated by 10 days from the harvest time through the combined treatment of 100 mg/L ethephon and 0.5% CaCl2 at the end of fruit enlargement in 'Fuji'/M.26.
