  • For fast neutron spectroscopy in MeV region, a recoil proton telescope detector was designed and constructed so as to increase in detection efficiency without appreciable deterioration in energy resolution by adopting a special type of recoil proton radiator which is a combination of a ring-shaped vertical radiator and a cone-shaped horizontal radiator at a certain geometry. A neutron stopper was built in the detector system to minimize the background due to direct exposure of the Si(Li) detectors to primary incident neutrons. The detection efficiency and the energy resolution calculated at various neutron energies and geometries are given and these characteristics of the detector system were tested by 14.1 MeV neutrons. As the calculation predicted, the relative detection efficiency in case of the combined radiator system is almost 2.2 times of that for a single, ring-shaped vertical radiator system. The calculated energy resolution is 3.7% FWHM, whereas the measured resolution was 3.9% which means resolution broadening of approximately. 30% was resulted by introducing a combined radiator system into the telescope. Increase in background less than 40% was also observed.

  • In this paper, a compact wideband antenna with a band-notch function is proposed. It operates over the UWB band with a band-stop characteristic. To increase the impedance bandwidth, a ring-shaped radiator is used. By attaching a circular stub to the ring-shaped radiator, the band-notch performance is obtained. The proposed antenna operates over a frequency range from 2.7 GHz to 11 GHz to satisfy the 10-dB return-loss requirement and provides band-stop performance in the frequency band from 5.15 GHz to 6.1 GHz. Experimental results reveal that the proposed antenna exhibits good radiation performance and is suitable for UWB applications.

  • An all-aluminum radiator made of aluminum was more excellent on environment friendliness, productivity, and cooling efficiency than the plastic tank radiator which was currently widely used in same size as above. A newly designed and manufactured radiator with all parts made of aluminium was ready to re-use without any disassembly process in recycle system so as to improve environment friendliness with low waste cost. Several manufacturing processes of the current plastic tank radiator such as O-ring inserting, and clinching of core to the tank, were eliminated on the manufacturing processes of the all-aluminium radiator, which would increase productivity and reduce production cost. Design criterion of all-aluminum radiator was presented by carrying out theoretical analysis of cooling capacity and there was no difference between analytical data and measurements. Cooling capacity of the all-aluminum radiator increased generally 13% up compared with the plastic radiator even though the pressure drop of air increased.

  • In this paper, active integrated antenna with left hand circular polarization(LHCP) for a transmitter of UHF RFID reader has been described. A novel rectangular ring patch as a radiator of the active antenna is proposed for easier impedance matching, smaller patch size, and LHCP characteristics. An amplification circuit is placed in the opening area of the radiator and is combined with it to work as oscillating circuit around 915 MHz. From the test results, impedance bandwidth of 29 MHz, 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 20 MHz, 3 dB beamwidth of 85 degree, and effective radiation power of 8.8 dBm have been obtained.

  • In this paper, a microstrip aperture-patch antenna and a microstrip ring antenna, which have single microstrip line feeding systems for the circular polarization, are designed, and experimental results are presented at X-band. The microstrip aperture-patch antenna is characterized by its wide operating frequency range, and the microstrip ring antenna is suitable for a basic radiator in the large array antenna due to its small size. Several design parameters for these antennas are considered and analyzed to improve antenna characteristics such as VSWR bandwidth and axial ratio. Initially, the sizes of the aperture and ring radiator are determined on a basis of the cavity model, then shapes of the patch within the aperture and the inner stub of the ring are optimized using Ensemble software. Measurement results show that the aperture-patch antenna has 25% of VSWR bandwidth and 1.2dB of axial ratio at the boresight, and the ring antenna has 6.7% of VSWR bandwidth and 1.6dB of axial ratio at the boresight.

  • In this paper, a small broadband dipole antenna that simultaneously satisfies DCS1800/PCS/WCDMA/WLAN is designed and fabricated. To reduce the size and to improve the bandwidth of planar microstrip dipole antenna, a new symmetric double-ring radiator structure is used. An antenna can be reduced with increasing effective current length of dipole, and can be obtained a wide band impedance characteristic with decreasing reactance component by using a novel symmetrical double-ring structure. The proposed antenna shows broadband characteristic of 1.07GHz(52%) from 1.5GHz to 2.57GHz with VSWR < 2 (${\leq}-10dB$).

  • A novel fully-printed microstrip antenna with negative first resonance and dual polarization is proposed. The radiator is printed on the 1-layer substrate instead of multilayers. The -1st resonance results from a composite right- and left-handed(CRLH) structure that has a circumferentially interlocked gap capacitively coupling a patch with a shorted-ring. This compact antenna is provided with a dual-polarization capability by creating two orthogonal linear polarizations in one body with coaxial feeds. The design is carried out by doing full-wave EM field simulation which is compared with the measurement of the fabricated antenna prototype. The measured results give the gain of 5 dBi and the efficiency of 78% at the -1st resonance mode as the center frequency of a downlink channel of the bandwidth over 20 MHz with 29 dB polarization isolation for mobile communication.

  • This paper proposes a novel reconfigurable microstrip antenna based on alternating a perturbation structure to achieve circular polarization diversity. The proposed antenna consists of an annular ring microstrip radiator for simultaneously loading stub and slot perturbations which support right- and left-handed circular polarization senses and two PIN diodes for choosing the operating polarization sense. By controlling the states of two PIN diodes between perturbing slot and stub at one diagonal corner of the radiator, reconfigurable circular polarization senses of the proposed antenna are successfully obtained and alternated. The proposed antenna has been theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated at 2.4 GHz of S-band for satellite communication system. The simulation and measurement results of the proposed antenna show in good agreement with the reflection coefficients, axial-ratios, realized antenna gains, and radiation patterns.

  • This paper describes a compact microstrip active antenna with dual polarization. The antenna, receiving both a left-hand circularly polarized wave and a right-hand circularly polarized wave, has a function of polarization diversity. A square-shaped empty room is located on the inside of the microstrip radiator so that the size has been reduced. And slots are added around feeding point to improve input matching. Also, amplifier and switching circuitry are placed at the empty room to increase antenna gain and to select one of the circular polarizations, respectively. The proposed antenna has been applied to GPS(global positioning system). The measurement results show that it has 10dB-impedance bandwidth, 3dB axial bandwidth of about 50MHz, 3dB beamwidth of 90degree, and gain of 13dBi, respectively, for RHCP. Also, it has 3dB axial bandwidth of about 50MHz, 3dB beamwidth of 84 degree, and gain of 12dBi, respectively, for LHCP.

  • In this paper, we present a circularly polarized (CP) composite cavity-backed crossed dipole antenna for global positioning system (GPS) applications. We produce the CP radiation by crossing two dipoles through a $90^{\circ}$ phase delay line of a vacant-quarter printed ring, which also has a broadband impedance matching characteristic. Two techniques, insertion of meander lines in the dipole arm and arrowhead-shaped trace at its end, are employed to reduce the sizes of the primary radiation element. The compact radiator is backed by a cavity reflector to achieve a wide CP radiation beamwidth. The proposed antenna exhibits a measured bandwidth of 1.450~1.656 GHz for a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) < 2 and 1.555~1.605 GHz for AR < 3-dB. At 1.575 GHz, the antenna has a gain of 7 dBic, a frontto-back ratio of 27 dB, AR of 1.18 dB, and 3-dB AR beamwidths of $130^{\circ}$ and $132^{\circ}$ in the x-z and y-z planes, respectively.
