  • Velocity-type repisratory air flow transducer measures dynamic pressure converted from air velocity based on the we1l-known Bernoulli's principle. It requires multiple velocity sampling holes on the flow plane. Measurement error theoretica1ly estimated by computer simulation was demonstrated to significantly reduce by unequally locating the velocity sampling holes. The flow plane was divided into multiple equi-area rings and the sampling holes were located on the circles also equally dividing each ring's area, which decreased measurement error down to 1/5 of the simple equi-radius ring division method. Also, less than 1 % relative error was estimated with 4 or more sampling holes. The present technique was less sensitive by <1/2 to the velocity profile change compared to the euqi-radius sampling. Therefore, the present unequal distance velocity sampling technique should be of great use to design the structure of the velocity-type respiratory air flow transducer.

  • Floating ring seals offer an opportunity to reduce leakage flows significantly in rotating machinery. Accordingly, they have been applied successfully to rotating machinery within the last several decades. For rocket turbopump applications, fundamental behavior and design philosophy have been revealed. However, further work is needed to explore the rotordynamic characteristics associated with rotor vibrations. In this study, rotordynamic forces for floating ring seals under rotor's whirling motions are calculated to elucidate rotordynamic characteristics. Comparisons between numerical simulation results and experiments demonstrated in our previous report are carried out. The three-dimensional Reynolds equation is solved by the finite-difference method to calculate hydrodynamic pressure distributions and the leakage flow rate. The entrance loss at the upstream inlet of the seal ring is calculated to estimate the Lomakin effect. The friction force at the secondary seal surface is also considered. Numerical simulation results showed that the rotordynamic forces of this type of floating ring seal are determined mainly by the friction force at the secondary seal surface. The seal ring is positioned almost concentrically relative to the rotor by the Lomakin effect. Numerical simulations agree quite well with the experimental results.

  • An upper bound elemental technique(UBET) is applied to predict the forging load and die-cavity filling for non-axisymmetric ring forging. In order to analyze the process easily, it is suggested that the finial product is divided into three different deformation regions. That is axisymmetric part in corner, lateral plane-strain part and shear deformation on boundaries between them. the place-strain and axisymmetric part are combinded by building block method. Also the total energy is computered through combination of three deformation part. Experiments have been carried out with pure plasticine billets at room temperature. The theoretical predictions of the forging load and the flow pattern are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • This paper reports on the theoretical analysis of mixed lubrication for the piston ring. The analytical model is presented by using the average flow and asperity contact model. The cyclic variations of the nominal minimum oil film thickness are obtained by numerical iterative method. The total friction is calculated by using the hydrodynamic and asperity contact theory. The effect of the roughness height, pattern, and engine speed on the nominal minimum film thickness, friction force, ad frictional power losses are investigated. As the roughness height increases, the nominal oil film thickness and total friction force increase. Also, the effect of the surface roughness on the boundary friction is dominant at low engine speed and high asperity height. The longitudinal roughness pattern shows lower mean oil film pressure and thinner oil film thickness compared to the case of the isotropic and transverse roughness patterns.

  • Conventional smart foam is not applicable to active noise control in a duct having flow. Thus, this paper presents a ring-type smart foam as an alternative. The ring-type smart foam consists of polyurethane acoustic foam of lining shape and PVDF film embedded in the foam. The embedded PVDF element acts as an actuator to reduce noise at lower frequencies and the foam absorbs noise at higher frequencies. A feedforward adaptive filtered-x LMS controller is used to minimize the signal from the error microphone. Experiments are executed to reduce broadband and tonal noise.

  • In the ring leading problem with demand splitting, traffic demands are given for each pair of nodes in an undirected ring network and a flow is routed in either of the two directions, clockwise and counter-clockwise. The load of a link is the sum of the flows routed through the link and the objective of the problem is to minimize the maximum link load on the ring. Recently, four different optimal a1gorithms have been developed for solving the problem. In this paper, we compare those algorithms in a single framework and conduct a computational study to evaluate the practical performance of those algorithms.

  • We report a case of a 40-year-old woman whose right ventricular out-flow tract was moderately obstructed by a heavily calcified pericardial ring. It was passing over the base of pulmonary artery and mid-portion of left ventricle but the other parts of the pericardium was mildly fibrotic. The pericardium and calcified ring were completely removed under cardiopulmonary bypass. The patient was recovered uneventfully and we could not find the specific cause of calcified pericardial ring.

  • Non-activated indolinobenzospiropyrans, 6-(p-substituted phenylazo)-1',3',3'-trimethylspiroindolinobenzopyrans(1-4) have been synthesized by the reaction of commercially available Fischer's base with 2-hydroxy-5-arylazobenzaldehyde (S1-S4). The arylazosalicylaldehydes were obtained from the diazocoupling reaction of substituted anilines with salicylaldehyde. The rate of spiro-ring formation from the open form of these nonactivated spiropyran derivatives at room temperature has been investigated utilizing the stopped-flow method de-veloped earlier. Half life times $(t_{1/2})$ of the ring-closure reaction in ethanol are about 0.3-14 seconds for the nonactivated spiropyrans examined. UV-Visible absorption spectral data of the open merocyanine form of nonactivated spiropyrans, which showed no chromotropism at room temperature, have also been obtained.
