  • This study performed to examine the genuineness of Kyung-Jong's poison hypothesis which was the one of the biggest topic in the history of Joseon Dynasty. Kyung-Jong's poison hypothesis is that Kyung-Jong who was the 20th king of the Joseon Dysansty was poisoned by the next king Young-Jo who became the 21st king. This theory was hyphosized by Sim-Yoohyun and was widely known in the 4th year of Young-jo through the revolt. Kyung-Jong suffered with severe diarrhea for 5 days which finally took his life away right after he had have marinated raw crab and persimmon. Some insist the poison must had been in those foods. However, the symptoms that Kyung-jong had were not matched with the poisons which used in those days and also poison was not the reasonable way of murder, so it is hard to say there is little possibility of poison. On the other hand, considering of Kyung-jong's health, marinated raw crab and persimmon could result of severe diarrhea. In the mean time, the possibility of Young-Jo's intention of killing Kyung-Jong is very low. Rather, he blame the royal doctors who scout the outside doctors, because he believed that it led Kyung-jong's death since the treatment was chaotic with all those different doctors. Even after the Kyung-Jong's death, Young-jo was always strict to scout the outside doctors and missed Kyung-jong consistently. On this basis, it is hard to say that king Kyung-Jong was murdered by poisoning.

  • In the Ki-Gu(氣口) pulse and the Yin-Yeong(人迎) pulse are the arterial pulsation position of the Lung Channel of Hand-Taeuem(手太陰) and the Stomach Channel of Foot-Yangmyeong(足陽明). At the pulses we can examine the circulation of Ki-Hyeol(氣血), the balance of Uem-Yang(陰陽), the deficiency and excess of the diseases, whether the disease is in Uem-Channel(陰經) or Yang-Channel (陽經), whether the disease is internel injury or externel injury. In the Ki-Gu(氣口) pulse and the Yin-Yeong(人迎) pulse are in front of the Right-Kwan(右關) and the Left-Kwan(左關) the distance of 1 Pun(分) because of completion of the Chon-Ku-Pulse-Taking(寸口脈診). The purpose of examnation is same to . In the Kwan-Pulse(關脈) doesn't have the position. It has only the role of a gateway of the circulation of Ki-Hyeol(氣血), the balance of Uem-Yang(陰陽). And it is same to role of the Ki-Gu(氣口) pulse and the Yin-Yeong(人迎) pulse in . So we can think that the Kwan-Pulse(關脈) in and the Ki-Gu(氣口) pulse and the Yin-Yeong(人迎) pulse in are the same thing. And we must have the different standard when examine the condition of Sam-Cho(三焦) and the circulation of Ki-Hyeol(氣血), the balance of Uem-Yang(陰陽) because the position of the Kwan-Pulse(關脈) came out after the time of .

  • BCI technology is to control communication systems or machines by brain signal among biological signals followed by signal processing. For the implementation of BCI systems, it is required that the characteristics of brain signal are learned and analyzed in real-time and the learned characteristics are applied. In this paper, we detect feature vector of EEG signal on left and right hand movements based on incremental approach and dimension reduction using the detected feature vector. In addition, we show that the reduced dimension can improve the classification performance by removing unnecessary features. The processed data including sufficient features of input data can reduce the time of processing and boost performance of classification by removing unwanted features. Our experiments using K-NN classifier show the proposed approach 5% outperforms the PCA based dimension reduction.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the neural substrates for recognizing facial expressions among alcoholics by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Abstinent inpatient alcoholics (n=18 males) and demographically similar social drinkers (n=16 males) participated in the study. The participants viewed pictures from the Japanese Female Facial Expression Database (JAFFE) and evaluated intensity of facial expressions. the alcoholics had a reduced activation in the limbic areas including amygdala and hippocampus while recognizing the emotional facial expressions compared to the nonalcoholic controls. On the other hand, the alcoholics showed greater brain activations than the controls in the left lingual (BA 19)/fusiform gyrus, the left middle frontal gyrus (BA 8/9/46), and the right superior parietal lobule (BA 7) during the viewing of emotional faces. In sum, specific brain regions were identified that are associated with recognition of facial expressions among alcoholics. The implication of the present study could be used in developing intervention for alcoholism.

  • In the present study, it was observed how the phage-host system that is naturally reproduced in activated sludge is affected by the host inoculation. The system of Microlunatus phosphovorus and its phages was selected as the phage-host system native to an activated sludge system operated for 19 days under sequencing anaerobic-aerobic conditions with glutamate as the main carbon source. The phage-host system related to M. phosphovorus was monitored by plaque assay for the phages and by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) for the bacterial host. In addition, the whole phage structure was also monitored by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). During the first 9 days, the phage-host system was more or less steady at approx. 9% (FISH/ DAPI) for M. phosphovorus and approx. 10,000 PFU/ml for its lytic phages. Microlunatus phosphovorus JCM9379 was inoculated into the activated sludge on day 10. Right after the inoculation, M. phosphovorus was approx. 24% (FISH/DAPI) whereas its lytic phages dropped down to approx. 500 PFU/ ml. After the host inoculation (within 9 days), however, the phage-host system eventually reverted to its original level in each population. On the other hand, the whole phage structure was not significantly changed by M. phosphovorus inoculation but stable throughout the process operation. Only the minor change that four phage groups gradually became abundant after the host inoculation was observed.

  • Chronic gastritis is the disease that is occuring in one in every 10 persons in Korea. In western medicine, endoscopy is needed to diagnose chronic gastritis, but it causes patients a pain and budget of expense. According to the TEM (Traditional Eastern Medicine), on the other hand, the 'Guan' position of the right wrist is related to a stomach. Thus we can diagnosis chronic gastritis by analyzing of pulse signal. However, pulse signal diagnosis is depended on oriental doctor's knowledge and experience. In this study, a systematic approach is proposed to analyze the computerized pulse signal. The pulse signals are firstly pre-processed, Gaussian model is adopted to fit the pulse signal, and then some related parameters are extracted from the model. Consequently, disease-sensitive parameters are selected by T-test and statistical difference. Finally, the selected parameters are entered into a Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) algorithm for classification. Classification results show that healthy persons and chronic gastritis patients are 95% and 87%, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to identify families' perception and attitude toward application of physical restraint(PR) in general neurological wards. The study is based on subjects from 70 family members who have cared patients applying PR. Data was collected using self-report questionnaires and reviewing of patients' medical records. 68.6% of subjects were female and the mean age was 47.9 years old. Family members were either sons, daughters or spouses. The questionnaires analyzed families' perceptions based on a score of 5, the results showed a mean score of 4.2, and items related to maintaining therapeutic tools scored the highest. The application of PR with two hands was perceived by families as more important than PR applied with one hand. In families' attitude toward PR, there was general agreement that families had the right to decide to apply and remove PR. Continuous education and information regarding PR is required to support families.

  • Purpose: Radial and ulnar arteries are two major arteries responsible for the blood supply of the hand. We experienced early recurrent thrombosis of ulnar artery after arteriorrhaphy in a patient with rupture of ulnar and radial arteries due to glass injury. Thus, we thought this would require reviews. Method: 41 - year - old female patient was presented for the laceration of right wrist due to glass injury. Operative findings revealed the rupture of radial artery, ulnar artery, ulnar nerve and most of the flexor tendons. We performed three consecutive operations because of the recurrent arterial thrombosis in ulnar artery. Arteriorrhaphy was performed in each operation and the interpositional vein graft was performed in the final operation. Result: Consequently, doppler ultrasonography was performed on twentieth postoperative day and fair flow in the ulnar artery was visualized. Pathologic examination of the artery revealed no histopathologic abnormalities. Conclusion: It is not a matter of ease to follow up the patients with rupture of radial or ulnar arteries. Obstruction of the repaired artery is also not easy to detect because it usually presents no definite symptoms. We could detect the obstruction of the artery following arteriorrhaphy with the doppler ultrasonography in less than a week postoperatively, and repeated operations were followed. We reviewed the causes and factors affecting the thrombosis and hereby report with literature review.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in electroencephalogram (EEG) coherence and brain wave activity for first-person perspective action observation (1AO) and third-person perspective action observation (3AO) of healthy subjects. Methods: Thirty healthy subjects participated in this study. EEG was simultaneously recorded during the Relax period, the 1AO, and the 3AO, with event-related desynchronization (ERD) and coherence connectivity process calculations for brain wave (alpha, beta and mu) rhythms in relation to the baseline. Results: Participants showed increased coherence in beta wave activity in the frontal and central areas (p<0.05), during the 1AO using right-hand activity. Conversely, the coherence of the alpha wave decreased statistically significantly decreased in the frontocentral and parieto-occipital networks during the observation of the 1AO and the 3AO. The ERD values were larger than 40% for both central regions but were slightly higher for the C4 central region. The high relative power of the alpha wave during 1AO and 3AO was statistically significantly decreased in the frontal, central, parietal, and occipital regions. However, the relative power of the beta wave during 1AO and 3AO was statistically significantly increased in the parietal and occipital regions. Especially during 1AO, the relative power of the beta wave in the C3 area was statistically significantly increased (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that 1AO and 3AO action observations are relevant to modifications of specific brain wave coherence and ERD values. EEG cortical activity during action observation may contribute to neural reorganization and to adaptive neuroplasticity in clinical intervention.

  • In the Tractatus, 'logical space' raises the several puzzles as follows. What are logical space, logical coordinates and logical place? What is the point of such analogies and what do they refer to exactly in the Tractatus? And what do occupy logical space? Can facts, proposition, propositional sign, situation and contradiction occupy it respectively? Or is it impossible to reconcile the remarks concerning logical place in the Tractatus? Futhermore, why did Wittgenstein need the concept of logical space? What is the problem that he tried to solve through this concept? In this paper, I will endeavor to answer to these problems. Logical space in the Tractatus is the system of propositions with senses. And it is the concept which Wittgenstein contrived by making model of Hertz's configuration space. Wittgenstein's fundamental coordinates are in some ways similar to geometrical ones. On the other hand logical coordinates are completely different from geometrical ones. Hence attempts to understand logical space by a kind of geometrical spaces cannot be right at all.
