A stable second-order finite volume method was proposed to predict sediment transport under rapidly varied flow conditions such as transcritical flow. For the use under unsteady flow conditions, a sediment transport model was coupled with shallow water equations. HLLC approximate Riemann solver based on a monotone upstream-centered schemes for conservation laws (MUSCL) reconstruction was used for the computation of the flux terms. From the comparisons of dam break flow experiments on erodible beds in one- and two-dimensional channels, good agreements were obtained when proper parameters were provided. Lastly, dam surface erosion problem by overtopped water was simulated. Overall, the numerical solutions showed reasonable results, which demonstrated that the proposed numerical scheme could provide stable and physical results in the cases of subcritical and supercritical flow conditions.

A model of landslides is developed using the shallow water equations to simulate time-dependent performance of landslides. The shallow water equations are derived using the (b, s) coordinate system which can be applied in both river and ocean. The finite volume scheme employing the HLL approximate Riemann solver and the total variation diminishing (TVD) limiter is applied to deal with the numerical discontinuities occurring in landslides. For dam-break water flow and debris flow, numerical results are compared with analytical solutions and experimental data and good agreements are observed. The developed landslide model is successfully applied to predict subaerial and submarine landslides. It is found that the subaerial landslide propagates faster than the submarine landslide and the speed of propagation becomes faster with steeper bottom slope and less bottom roughness.

A novel technique was proposed to calculate fluxes accurately by separation of flow area into a part of step face which is dominated by flow resistance of it and an upper part which is relatively less affected by the step face in analyzing shallow-water flows over discontinuous topography. This technique gives fairly good agreement with exact solutions, 3D simulations, and experimental results. It has been possible to directly analyze shallow-water flows over discontinuous topography by the technique developed in this study. It is expected to apply the developed technique to accurate evaluation of overflows over weirs or retaining walls (riverside roads) and areas flooded by the inundation in the city covered in discontinuous topography.
We study the properties of supernova (SN) driven interstellar turbulence with a numerical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. Calculations were done using the RIEMANN framework for MHD, which is highly suited for astrophysical flows because it tracks shocks using a Riemann solver and ensures pressure positivity and a divergence-free magnetic field. We start our simulations with a uniform density threaded by a uniform magnetic field. A simplified radiative cooling curve and a constant heating rate are also included. In this radiatively-cooling magnetized medium, we explode SNe one at a time at randomly chosen positions with SN explosion rates equal to and 12 times higher than the Galactic value. The evolution of the system is basically determined by the input energy of SN explosions and the output energy of radiative cooling. We follow the simulations to the point where the total energy of the system, as well as thermal, kinetic, and magnetic energy individually, has reached a quasi-stationary value. From the numerical experiments, we find that: i) both thermal and dynamical processes are important in determining the phases of the interstellar medium, and ii) the power index n of the $B-p^n$ relation is consistent with observed values.
The multi-slope MUSCL, proposed by T. Buffard and S. Clain, determines slopes of conserved variables at each edge of a cell in the linear reconstructions of data. In this study, the second order accurate numerical model was developed according to the multi-slope MUSCL to solve the shallow water equations on the unstructured grids. The HLLL scheme of approximate Riemann solvers was used to calculate fluxes. For the review of the applicability of the developed model, the results of the model were compared to the 'isolated building test' and the 'model city flooding experiment' conducted as part of the IMPACT (Investigation of extreMe flood Processes And unCerTainty) project in Europe. There were limitations to predict abrupt rising of water depths by the resistance of model buildings and water depths at the specific locations among the buildings. But they were identified as the same problems also revealed in results of the other models to the same experiment. On the more refined meshes to the 'model city flooding experiment' simulated results showed good agreement with measurements. It was verified that the developed model simulated well the complex phenomena such as a dam-break problem and the urban inundation by flash floods.
The numerical simulation of shock waves in supersonic flows is challenging because of several instabilities which can affect the solution. Among them, the carbuncle phenomenon can introduce nonphysical perturbations in captured shock waves. In the present work, a hybrid numerical flux is proposed for the evaluation of the convective fluxes that avoids carbuncle and keeps high-accuracy on shocks and boundary layers. In particular, the proposed flux is a combination between an upwind approximate Riemann problem solver and the Local Lax-Friedrichs scheme. A simple strategy to mix the two fluxes is proposed and tested in the framework of a discontinuous Galerkin discretisation. The approach is investigated on the subsonic flow in a channel, on the supersonic flow around a cylinder, on the supersonic flow on a flat plate and on the flow in a overexpanded rocket nozzle.

A numerical study of underexpanded jet and impingement on a wall mounted at various distances from the nozzle exit is presented. The 3-dimensional Wavier-Stokes equations and κ-ω turbulence equations are solved. The grids are constructed as overlapped grid systems to examine the distance effect. The DADI method is applied to obtain steady-state solutions. To avoid numerical instability such as the carbuncle phenomena that sometimes accompany approximate Riemann solver, the HLLE+ scheme is employed for the inviscid flux at the cell interfaces. A goal of this work is to apply a number of two-equation turbulence models based on the w equation to the impinging jet problem.

A numerical study of underexpanded jet and impingement on a wall mounted at various distances from the nozzle exit is presented. The 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence equations are solved. The grids are constructed as overlapped grid systems to examine the distance effect. The DADI method is applied to obtain steady-state solutions. To avoid numerical instability such as the carbuncle that sometimes accompany approximate Riemann solver, the HLLE+ scheme is employed for the inviscid flux at the cell interfaces. For the analysis of compressible flow with real gas effect, characteristic form of Roe's Riemann solver was derived again using real gas equation of state and variable specific heal and it was extended to multi component reactive system. From this study, it is known that some correction should be made for the use of existing numerical algorithm. 1) Sonic speed and characteristic variable should be corrected with real gas effect. 2) Roe's average was applicable only with the assumption of constant properties. 3) Artificial damping term and characteristic variables should be corrected but their influence may not be significant.
Generally, Compressible Navier-Stokes codes are used to solve high mach number flows. But, Most of high mach number flows embrace low mach number flows. This phenomenon results in low convergence rate and non-physical solution in CFD analysis. So Many researchers developed preconditioning technique to solve these problems. This Study presents how to modify previous compressible N-S computer code with little changes of structure into preconditioned compressible N-S code applying Roe's Approximate Riemann Solver. And this study show developed preconditioning code is very well operated at all mach number flows.
