This study was prepared by varying the type of barley sikhye to promote the use of barley. to learn the quality characteristics of traditional beverage sikhye, sikhyes were made out of different kinds of barley such as amethyst barley, black naked barley, tetrastichum barley, tetrastichum waxy barley, naked barley and naked waxy barley. The result of the study is as following. Regarding the length/width ratio of barley grain, black naked barley was the biggest; while amethyst barley was the smallest. Moisture content of barley grain was in the range of 54.96~71.74%. The saccharification liquid pH was in the range of 5.40~5.63 and the soluble solid content was in the range of 15.37~18.73 brix %. The saccharification liquid of sikhye made of tetrastichum waxy barley had the highest soluble solid content; while the saccharification liquid of sikhye made of black naked barley had the lowest soluble solid content. Reducing sugar was in the range of 4.35~7.42 mg/ 100 g; at which tetrastichum waxy barley sikhye had the highest reducing sugar while black naked barley sikhye had the lowest reducing sugar. The result of reducing sugar was similar to the result of soluble solid content. Black naked barley had low Lightness, redness and yellowness in its cooked rice grain and saccharification liquid. The result of barley sikhye characteristics was as following. Black naked barley had the strongest fullness while tetrastichum waxy barley had the weakest fullness. Black naked barley had strong feeling after swallowing the barley rice grain; while tetrastichum waxy barley had weak feeling after swallowing the barley rice grain. The result of feeling after swallowing the barley rice grain had correlation with fullness. The result of preference test was as following. naked waxy barley sikhye and naked barley sikhye had best outlook. In the smell, amethyst barley sikhye was the best. regarding texture, naked barley sikhye and naked waxy barley sikhye had high preference. In overall preference, naked barley sikhye was the best. Like above, there were differences in quality in sikhyes dependent on the variety of barley. In particular, tetrastichum waxy barley and naked barley will be able to increase the amount of sweetness without malt production during sikhye.
The Rural Development Administration (RDA) of Korea now operates a system called Rice Variety Selection Tests (RVST), which are now being implemented in eight Agricultural Research and Extension Services located in eight province RVST's objective is to provide accurate yield estimates and to select well-adapted varieties to each province. Systematic evaluation of entries included in RVST is a highly important task to select the best-adapted varieties to specific location and to observe the performance of entries across a wide range of test sites within a region. The rice yield data in RVST for ordinary transplanting in Kangwon province during 1997-2000 were analyzed. The experiments were carried out in three replications of a random complete block design with eleven entries across five locations. Additive Main effects and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) model was employed to examine the interaction between genotype and environment (G$\times$E) in the biplot form. It was found that genotype variability was as high as 66%, followed by G$\times$E interaction variability, 21%, and variability by environment, 13%. G$\times$E interaction was partitioned into two significant (P<0.05) principal components. Pattern analysis was used for interpretation on G$\times$E interaction and adaptibility. Major determinants among the meteorological factors on G$\times$E matrix were canopy minimum temperature, minimum relative humidity, sunshine hours, precipitation and mean cloud amount. Odaebyeo, Obongbyeo and Jinbubyeo were relatively stable varieties in all the regions. Furthermore, the most adapted varieties in each region, in terms of productivity, were evaluated.
An experiment was carried out to know the effects of paclobutrazol on the lodging related traits and yield of a japonia (Seomjinbyeo) and an indica (Samgangbyeo) rice variety grown at 3 N levels (10, 20, 30 kg/10a) and 3 N split rates [basal + top dressing 15 days after transplanting (DAT) : top dressing 25 days before heading (DBH) was 100 : 0, 80 : 20, and 60 : 40]. Paclobutrazol (3kg/10a of 0.6% G) was applied 15 DBH and lodging related traits were observed 3, 13, 23, and 33 days after heading (DAH). The results obtained summarized as follows. 1. Culm length was increased as N level increased, but decreased by application of paclobutrazol. Culm length was not affected by N split rates in both varieties. 2. Lodging was not occurred at all plots, but lodging index of Seomingbyeo was much greater than that of Samgangbyeo. In both varieties loding index increased up to 23 DAH due to an increase in fresh weight and a decrease in breaking strength and levelled off thereafter due to a decrease in both fresh weight and breaking strength. 3. Culm length of Seomjinbyeo and fresh weight of shoot and culm length of Samgangbyeo were positively correlated with lodging index, but breaking strength was not correlated with lodging index in both varieties during the most of ripening stages. Direct effect of culm length contributing to lodging index was positive and much greater than that of fresh weight and breaking strength in Seomjinbyeo, but in Samganbyeo direct effect of culm length and fresh weight was positive, but that of breaking strength was negative with similar magnitudes. 4. Yield in brown rice of Seomjinbyeo was not affected by N level, but split application of N increased yield. In contrast, yield of Samgangbyeo was increased as N level increased, but yield was not affected by N split rates. Paclobutrazol did not affect yield of rice in Seomjinbyeo, but decreased yield by 5.2% in Samgangbyeo due to a decrease in the number of spikelets per panicle.
As a basic studies for increasing food production utilizing sandy barren lands and sandy farmlands of low productivity which distributed widely in Korea, an experiment of growing rice-plant on sandy barren land was undertaken as follows. 1. Variety, IR-667 was adopted and the growing method was a nutrient-irrigation culture which aimed to minimize percolation loss in sand with an automatic contineous supplying nutrient solution for supplmenting the sand characteristics. 2. The growth type price-plant after heading was a typical higher yield plant, that is, numerous, small, narrow, and thickend leaves, straight attitute, dense fasciculated etc. though the rooting of plant after planting was delayed because of using paddy-field grown seedling. 3. The adaptability of rice-plants on sandy land seemed to be different by varieties and IR-667 was more adaptable than ordinary Japonica varieties. 4. Even at the period of heading and maturing, the root system of rice-plant grown on sand showed vigorous growth having more activated apical portions. while, even the lower leaves showed flourished state. 5. The suppling of calcium and magnecium in addition to nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium on sand made notable increase of stem number per plant, grain number per stem and yields.
Most of the japonica rice varieties preferred for high eating quality are liable to lodging even under moderate rate of nitrogen application. This lodging liability has been a critical limit even for proper evaluation of physio-logical characteristics of those varieties exhibitable under higher nitrogen levels. Use of recent inhibitors of gibberellin biosynthesis such as ‘Pac1obutrazol’ may allow us to overcome this barrier. The responses of four high eating quality varieties to nitrogen application to the level of 150kg N per ha were evaluated with and without use of Paclobutrazol in comparison with a non-lodging, improved short japonica, Dongjin and a non-lodging, high yielding indica x japonica Milyang 23. The four were Damageum (the best eating quality in the 1930s), Nongrim 6 (the best in the 1960s), Chuchung (the best since 1970s), Koshihikari (the best in Japan since 1960s). As expected increased application of nitrogen increased plant height, length of the 3rd internode, and lodg-ing liability, being measured as culm breaking load, in all varieties tested and caused actual lodging in the fiel from the 50kg Nfha level in Damageum and Koshihikari and at the level of l50kg Nfha in Nongrim 6. Applica-tion of Pac1obutrazol (0.6%G) 15 days before heading reduced plant height, length of the 3rd internode and lodging liability being measured as culm breaking load in all varieties tested. However, the application of Pac1obutrazol during active tillering stage resulted in decreased culm breaking load in Damageum, Nongrim 6, and Koshihikari in spite of the decreased plant height and culm length as in the other varieties. Maximum yield was obtained with 100kg Nand 30kg Pac1obutrazol at 15 days before heading in Nongrim 6, 150kg N and 30kg Pac1obutrazol at 15 days before heading in Damageum, and 150kg N and 20kg Paclobutrazol at 20 days after transplanting plus 30kg Paclobutrazol at 15 days before heading in the variety Koshinhikari and Chuchung. Under a sensory evaluation of cooked rice, the four high eating quality varieties were not different in rank and Paclobutrazol treated rice was not distinguished from the untreated in eating quality.
For the investigation of efficient use of fertilizer nitrogen NPK simple trials were carried out using newly bred Tongil line(japonica indica hybrid selection) and the leading local varieties with sulfur coated area in fields for two years. The yield of Tongil line was higher than that of leading local varieties by 16% in the cool year and 23% is warm year with high solar radiation from NPK simple trials including SCU and 2-split application which were carried in 130 fields at 32 locations. Warm year increased yield by 9% in Tongil but only 3% in the local than the cool year did. Optimum nitrogen level was higher in Tongil by 3.8㎏ in the cool year and 5.5㎏ in warm year than for the local. Yearly variation of optimum nitrogen in the carne variety was greater than varietal variation in the same Year. Two-split application resulted in 1 to 2% of inconsistent yield variation. Sulfur coated urea increased yield by average 2 to 4% even at 20% reduced rate of nitrogen. It was remarkably effective in same $(27{\sim}39%)$, virgin (20%) and unmatured (10%) soils.
Several high protein mutant lines(M4 plant generation, 1974) obtained from X-ray irradiated Jinheung variety were examined at three different locations for their agronomic characters, protein and grain yields. On the other hand, high protein-short culmed-early maturity mutant line No. 398 (M$_{10}$ plant generation, 1974) induced from Hokwang was crossed back to its mother to investigate the gene(s) controlling protein and its pleiotropic relation to other mutated characters. Although variation of protein percent of mutant lines from Jinheung was comparatively large depending on year and location, most of the high protein mutant lines had higher protein yield per unit area than the mother variety and their grain yields were equal to or better than the mother, being resistant to both leaf and neck blast. They were several days earlier-maturing and had shorter-culm except one mutant line. The culm length and heading date of F$_1$ between high protein mutant 398 and its mother Hokwang were intermediate. Accurate assessment of segregation of culm length and heading date in F$_2$ generation and protein percent in F$_3$ seeds will be conducted in 1975.
To obtain the basic information an seed quality improvement in sesame, protein content of 114 varieties and amino acid composition of 12 varieties was analyzed. Protein content showed the vaietal difference ranged 20.6-30.2% and the mean was 24.72%. The highest variety in protein content was PI158066 (30.2%) originated from U.S.A. Protein content of Korean local varieties were highest among original group analyzed. Seed coat texture and seed coat color affected to protein content so, smooth type was higher than rough type in protein content, and black seeded varieties showed the hight protein content. Amino-acid composition of sesame was uneque in balance and higher than FAO reference. Total amino-acid of variety PI258372 was highest as 25.03%. Essential amino-acid (EAA) /total amino-acid(TAA) ratio of sesame was higher as 42-58.2% than soybean, corn, rice, peanut. Korean local variet 'Samcheck' showed best quality in amino-acid composition as 58.2% in EAA/TAA ratio with high tyrocin and lysine. Total amino acid content was high in order of Korean local '||'&'||'gt; introduced '||'&'||'gt; Korean bred varieties.

New screening method of varietal resistance by isotope $^{32}P$ was examined in these experiments. Insects were fed for 24 hrs. in the vials, with rice seedlings absorbed the solution if $0.6\~7{\mu}\;Ci\;^{32}P$ for 24 to 48 hrs. Feeding amounts of 3 species of plant-hoppers at the different stages and duration of infestation were investigated for effective process of screening method of the varietal resistance using isotope $^{32}P$. Feeding amount of $^{32}P$ of brown plant-hopper was observed for the different varieties. The results may be summarized as follows: 1. Brown planthopper fed greatest and the feeding amount were increased in order of white-backed planthopper and small brown planthopper. Female hoppers fed more than male. 2. Feeding amount was increased in order of adult, 5th instar, adult, 4th instar, 3rd instar 2nd instar and 1st instar. The duration of $24\~48\;hours$ is considered sufficient for insect infestation. 3. New screening method by $^{32}P$ was compared with seedling bulk screening method in view of feeding amount and plant reaction. Feeding amount of $^{32}P$ by brown planthopper in Milyang 47, resistant variety to this insect, was very low, while in TN 1, susceptible variety, it was very high about one hundred tines of Milyang 47.
We have studied the responce of nitrogen on the newly bred varieties, Yusin and Milyang #23, and the effects of defoliation at maturing stage on the rate of ripened grains under different nitrogen levels. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Milyang #23 as well as Tongil was found to be highly nitrogen responsive variety and showed good grain maturing percentage. The number of grain per unit area affected the total yield under the high levels of nitrogen application. The variety, Yusin, was less responsive to nitrogen and had also less leaf area than other varieties under the high level of nitrogen application. Yusin also seemed to have low maturing percentage due to unbalanced ratio between photosynthetic area and size of storage. 2. The low internodes and leaf blade of Yusin and Milyang #15 were grown too much under high levels of nitrogen and these caused more lodging and less light penetration in pant canopy. 3. The effects of defoliation at maturing stage on yield was high under the high levels of nitrogen application, especially when defoliation was done early stage of maturing. The effects of defoliation appeared to be greates in Tongil than in Milyang #15.
