  • To evaluate the possibility of hardening of rice seedlings to chilling injury by low temperature conditioning for improvement of nursery temperature management a chilling sensitive new variety Tongil from Indica \times Japonica cross and a chilling tolerant Japonica variety Jinheung were reared by the 3rd leaf-stage in a day $30^{\circ}C/night\; 20^{\circ}C$ growth chamber, and were subjected to temperature conditioning for hardening against chilling injury for 6 days. Then the seedlings conditioned and unconditioned were chilled in a day and night $8^{\circ}C$ chamber for 2, 4, 6, or 8 days long and returned to the day and night $30^{\circ}C/night\; 20^{\circ}C$ condition for development of chilling injuries. Survival rate after chilling injury development of the variety Tongil showed distinct effect of hardening, i. e. the unhardened-25 % survival, the hardened by a gradual drop of temperature regime $(30^{\circ}C/20^{\circ}C\rightarrow24^{\circ}C/14^{\circ}C\rightarrow18^{\circ}C/12^{\circ}C\rightarrow8^{\circ}C)4 -59% survival and the hardened. by repeated brief exposure (4hrs. to 6hrs.) to $8^{\circ}C$ shock-89% survival against chilling of $8^{\circ}C$ for 4 days long. The variety Jinheung survived even against 8 days chilling at $8^{\circ}C$ C, but the discoloration rate of leaves due to chilling showed noticeably the hardening effect as repeated shock was much better than the gradually lowering temperatures.

  • This study has been made to find out the possibilty of successfully using the following $K_2O$ recommended equation $K_2O\;kg/10a=(Ko/\sqrt{Ca+Mg}-Ks/\sqrt{Ca+Mg})sqrt{Ca+Mg}.\;47.\;B\;D$. where $Ko/sqrt{Ca+Mg}=0.03518+0.0007658\;Sio_2/O.M$. $K_Ssqrt{Ca+Mg}$=Exchangeable K me/100g/$\sqrt{Total\;soluble(Ca+Mg)me/100g\;in\;Soil}$ B. D. =Bulk density of top soil, when the dose of Nitrogen for rice is estimated from the following equation: $N\;kg/10a=(4.2+0.096\;SiO_2/O.M).F$ where $F=0.907+0.263x-0.013x^2$ $SiO_2/O.M=(available\;SiO_2=ppm)/(organic\;matter\;%)$in soil For this. two field experiments. one in sandy and the other in clay paddy soil. have been conducted using 3 levels of wollastonite (0, 500, 100kg/10a) as main treatments; 3 levels of $K_2O$ application were used as sub-plots. These were as follows : (1) 8kg of $K_2O$/10a regardless of the K activity-$K/\sqrt{Ca+Mg}$; (2) kg of $K_2O$/10a estimated from the above equation. and (3) same as (2) above plus additional 30% of $K_2O$. The dose of N kg/ 10a was determined from the above equation based on the value of $SiO_2$/O.M. ratio in each treatment. There were three replications. The leading variety of rice in Chung Chong Nam Do area. Akibare (introduced from Japan) was used. The data obtained. through soil and plant analysis and growth and yield observations. have been throughly examined to attain the following summarized conclusions. 1. The nitrogen dose. estimated from the above equation. was in excess for optimum growth of the rice variety Akibare; indicating the necessity of modification onthe value of "F" or the constants in the equation. The concept of using $SiO_2$/O.M. in the equation was shown to be applicable. 2. The dose of potash. estimated from the respective equation given above. also was in excess of the rice requirements indicating the necessity of minor change in the estimation of $Ko/\sqrt{Ca+Mg}$ value and some great modification in the calculation of $Ks/\sqrt{Ca+Mg}$ value for the equation; however the concept of using $K/\sqrt{Ca+Mg}$ as a basis of $K_2O$ recommendation was shown to be quite reasonable. 3. It was found. from the correlation study using the data of paddy yield and amount of $K_2O$ absorbed by rice plants that the substitution of the value of $Ks/\sqrt{Ca+Mg}$ in the equation for the vaule $Ks/\sqrt{Ca+Mg}=0.037+0.78K\;me/100g$ soil was much more applicable than using the value calculated from the data of soil and wollastonite analysis.

  • Experiments were carried out to evaluate the standard gravity in determining potential kernel size and to determine the effective sampling way by analyzing intra - and inter - plant variations for some source and sink characters using eleven semi-dwarf indica and three japonica cultivars including four semi-dwarf indica nearisogenic lines. Also, additional experiments were conducted to understand yearly variation and variety x year interaction effects for ten characters related to source and sink and to characterize the varietal difference of pre- and post-heading self-competition employing three parental varieties and their F$\sub$5/ progenies in 1982 and 1983. It is desirable to determine the potential kernel size by average kernel wight of rice grains showing above 1.15 specific gravity. There was significant difference in leaf area per tiller, spikelets and sink capacity per panicle among vigorous, intermediate and inferior tillers classified by differentiated order and vigorousness. Although it was difficult to find out any significant difference in grain-fill ratio, ratio of perfectly ripened grain, potential kernel size and sink/source ratio between vigorous and intermediate tillers, there was big difference between them and inferior one. The coefficients of variation within each tiller-group for some characters related to source and sink were larger with the order of vigorous tillers < intermediate one '||'&'||'lt; inferior one, and the average heritability of all characters, evaluated by the ratio of varietal variance (equation omitted) to total variance (equation omitted), were higher with the order of inferior tillers '||'&'||'lt; intemediate one '||'&'||'lt; superior one. Therefore, it is desirable to sample the vigorous tillers to represent the varietal difference of these traits. '82-'83 year variations of three parental cultivars were significant for all traits except for leaf area/tiller, panicles/hill, leaf area index and rough rice yield. The characters showing highly significant variance of variety x year interaction were growth duration from transplanting to heading, leaf area/tiller, sink/source ratio, sink capacity/panicle and grain yield. Generalized yearly response of three parental varieties (Suweon 264, Raegyeong, IR1317-70-l) and their F$\sub$5/ progenies on the 1st and 2nd principal components extracted from ten source and sink characters generally exhibited reduction in both source and sink. However, there were diverse variety x year interactions such as progenies showing similar reaction with their parents and intermediate or recombinational yearly response with little or considerable yearly movement on the four-dimensional planes of the two upper principal components between 1982 and 1983. Sink characters revealing highly significant border effect were grain-fill ratio, spikelets and sink capacity per panicle. Among them the latter two especially showed significant variety x border effect interaction. Self-competition characterized by relative weakness of inside plant's sink characters compared to the border one was more severe during the reproductive stage before heading than maturing stage. Though the larger sink capacity per panicle generally disclosed the severer self-competition, some lines (like Suweon 264) revealed severe self-competition with small sink capacity while a few others showed tender self-competition in spite of big sink capacity per panicle.

  • In order to find out the basic information for salt tolerance in vice (Oryza sativa L.), effects of NaCl treatment on absorption of inorganic components and growth were investigated in 6 japonica and 5 tongil varieties and compared to the salt tolerance variety, Annapurna. The absorption of N and $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ was less repressed than that of $\textrm{K}_2\textrm{O}$, MgO, CaO, and $\textrm{Si}\textrm{O}_2$ which were a little affected by NaCl treatment. $\textrm{K}_2\textrm{O}$ was the most highly repressed component in the absorption of inorganic components, followed by MgO, CaO, total-N, $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ and $\textrm{Si}\textrm{O}_2$. $\textrm{Na}_2\textrm{O}$ content was increased about twenty times to the control at 30days after NaCl treatment, and tonsil varieties more than absorbed japonica ones. Dry weight of japonica varieties by NaCl treatment was less reduced than that of tonsil varieties, followed by Seomjinbyeo, Sinseonchalbyeo, Nakdongbyeo, Daechoungbyeo, Dongjinbyeo and Chuchoungbyeo in japonica group, and Milyang30, Gayeabyeo, Jangseongbyeo, Chilseongbyeo and Taebackbyeo in tonsil group. The relationship between dry weight reduction and Na/K ratio showed positively significant correlation in rice.

  • Experiment were conducted to study the photosynthetic ability of several rice varieties and the influence of the drymatter production on the yield components of the rice plant, especially in ripening period. The photosynthetic ability at the ripening period, the varieties were classified into two groups as relatively high capacity and low capacity. With the earlier the transplanting date and the higher the N-content leaf blade, the greater the ratio of reserved assimilates befere heading time to the ear. This could be support the fact that the rate of full-ripened grains or grain yield of 'Tongil' variety may increased by the change of environment condition.condition.

  • Under the constant daylength of 13 hours and growth temperatures of 15$^{\circ}C$ to 27$^{\circ}C$, the final number of loaves (FNL) on the main culm was constant as 15 regardless of temperature in rice variety 'Kwanganbyeo'. Leaf appearance rate (LAR) increased with rising temperature and decreased with phenological development. Threshold temperature (T$_{o}$) was not constant across growth stages, but increased with phenological development. Effective accumulated temperature (EAT), which is calculated by the summation of values subtracting T0 from daily mean temperature, is closely related with number of leaves appeared (LA). LA was fitted to bilinear, quadratic, power and logistic function of EAT. Among the functions, logistic function had the best fitness of which coefficient of determination was $R^2$=0.995. Therefore, LAR prediction model was established by differentiating this function in terms of time: (equation omitted). where dL/dt is LAR, T$_1$ is daily mean temperature, L is the number of leaves appeared, and a, b, and c are constants that were estimated as 41.8, 1098.38, and -0.9273, respectively. When predictions of LA were made by LAR prediction model using data independent of model establishment, the observed and predicted LA showed good agreement of $R^2$$\geq$0.99.

  • A total of 192 Korean landraces were investigated for the comparison of each other as useful germplasm to organic farming and examined correlation between quantitative traits. Almost Korean landraces were classified into medium-heading variety and average days from seeding to heading was 111.1 days. Plant height and culm length were longer about 20∼40cm than general Japonica cultivar. Average width of leaf blade and average length of panicle were 1.3cm and 22.4cm, respectively, Average number of panicles per plant was 10.0 and almost varieties showed low tilling habit. Average length/width ratio of brown rice was 1.7 and several varieties were long grain type and average 1,000 grain weight was 21.6g. In correlation coefficient among quantitative traits, positive significant correlations were observed between culm length and leaf width, days from seeding to heading, but negative correlations were observed between days from seeding to heading and 1000 grain weight. 27.1% of Korean landraces showed weak and lodging degree in culm strength and 3.6% of total varieties showed purple margin on leaf blade and leaf sheath. In leaf blade angle and flag leaf angle, erect type was 46.9% and 10.9%, respectively. 24.0% of total varieties showed the slow and late degree of leaf senescence. The rate of awned type, waxy type and brown seed coat were 74.5%, 20.3% and 4.2%, respectively. The color of stigma, spikelet, apiculus and awn showed diverse color such as white, brown, red and purple.

  • This paper examined the operational efficiency of the new rice variety "Sindongjin" farmed by the Rural Development Administration. Thirty farmers were surveyed in the survey area--Jeonbuk-do Province. The operational efficiency was analyzed by studying the data of these 30 farmers. The operational efficiency of the farmers was analyzed through a survey using the DEA model for analysis. DEA analysis was performed to obtain the technical efficiency of the farmers. The results showed that the DEA technical efficiencies of 12 farmers were efficient, and 18 farmers were inefficient. Farmers No. 13 and No. 25 were representative of inefficiency, and the results show that the cost of input elements was high. An analysis of the determinants of efficiency through the Tobit model found that the operating efficiency increased with decreasing variable costs (Seed costs, By-product fertilizer costs, General fertilizer cost, Pesticides cost, Cost of water, electricity, gas, and Cost of small farm implements) and fixed costs (Repair cost and Other costs). There is a problem of excess input from farmers, and these input costs need to be reduced.

  • The study has been carried to investigate the nature of resistance in rice varieties against bacterial leaf blight caused by Xanthomonas oryzae (Uyeda et. Ishiyama) Dowson. In this study, differences on several morphological histological and bacterial growth in rice leaf extract from different varieties were examined. Shirogane and Norm 6 as resistant varieties, Paldal as moderately resistant, and Jinheung, Kimmaze and Suwon 213 as susceptible varieties were used throughout the experiment. 1. Susceptible varieties Jinheung, Kimmaze have more hydathods in flag leaf than resistant varieties but there were no difference between resistant varieties and moderatly resistant varieties. 2. Average length of xylem vessel elements were 50r longer in leaf veins of susceptible varieties Jinheung, Kimnaze and Suwon 213 than those of resistant varieties, but there were no difference among Paldal, Norm 6 and Shirogane. 3. Kimmaze and Suwon 213 have larger diameter of xylem vessel elements than those of other varieties examined. However, it did not differ significantly between resistant varieries and susceptible varieties statistically. 4. Jinheung and Kimmaze have more secondary xylem vessels in root of 6-7th leaf stage than those of Shirogane and Norm 6. Suwon 213, however, showed least number of secondary xylem vessels exceptionally. 5. Leaf extract from resistnat variety Shirogane, suppressed bacterial growth significantly when compared with those from other varieties. 6. Bacterial growth in autoclaved leaf extract from resistant varieties and susceptible varieties did not show any noticeable difference. In general, fresh extract maintained more bacteria than in autoclaved extract after 48 hours of incubation period.

  • The study was done to determine the proper transplanting dates and seedling ages of rice when mechanical transplanting was attempted. Heading dates of the Milyang #23, developed from Tong-il rice was delayed by delayed transplanting and the percent of filling grain was also low. The proper heading dates for the variety should be the first part of August and the transplanting should be done by the end of May. The presumed last days for the transplantation was considered early part of June. 30 to 40 days old seedlings were very effective to have healthy rooting systems. However, the Milyang #15 had shown more tolerance to the late transplantation than Milyang #23 and the degree of delaying heading dates due to the delayed transplantation was rather smaller than that of the Milyang #23. Even when the Milyang #15 was transplanted on June 30, the heading dates were around the middle of August and the ripening percentage was comparatively high and yield was also high. Therefore, the proper heading dates of the Milyang #15 might be around the middle of August and transplanting dates should be the first part of June. The possible last dates of transplantation of the Milyang #15 was assumed to be the last days of June and the proper seedling ages would be 20 to 30 day after sowing.
