Effects on the Storability Enhancement and Root Yield by Air Curing of the Seed Rhizome of Rehmannia glutinosa Liboschitz ex Steudel (지황 종근의 저장성 및 수량에 미치는 음건 처리의 효과)

  • Background: The use of Rehmannia glutinosa of the family Scrophulariaceae, in traditional medicine is well known. This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of air curing of the seed rhizome of R. glutinosa on its storability and yield. Methods and Results: The root of the R. glutinosa cultivar (Dagang) was harvested in at the end of November. The seed rhizomes were air cured for one to seven days. They were subsequently wrapped with newspaper and further stored in a plastic container at $1^{\circ}C$. It was observed that the weight loss and decay rates were significantly lower in the air cured seeds than in the untreated ones. Moreover, the decay rate of the control was approximately 50%, 120 days after storage. However. the decay rate of all the air cured treatment groups was less than 1%. Additionally, air curing led to an increase in the germination rate of the seeds and the root yield when compared with the untreated groups. Taken together, the ideal treatment period for air curing was found to be 3 days. Under these conditions, the germination rate and yield were 88.7% and 2,185 ㎏/10a, respectively. Conclusions: This study successfully demonstrated that the air curing of seed rhizomes can lead to a considerable increase in the storability and yield of R. glutinosa.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Activated charcoal (AC) for stimulating growth and productivity of Curcuma longa Linne as affected by different concentrations of AC. Growth characteristics such as plant height and leaf length were the highest with the optimum amount of activated charcoal ranged from 10 to 30%. Root growth was elongated by the addition of 30% AC with the highest rhizome length and weight.

Efficacy of Soil Amendment with Medicinal Plant Materials for the Control of Root-knot Nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) in Tomato

  • Soil amendments with oriental herbal medicines such as fruit of Anethum graveolens, flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, rhizome of Cnidium officinale, rhizome of Coptis chinensis, root bark of Paeonia suffructicosa, stem bark of phellodendron amurense, and stem bark of Cinnamomum cassia at the rate of 0.2% (weight by volume of soil) significantly reduced Meloidogyne incognita infection (root gall formation) of tomato seedlings compared with the control. The most effective treatments were root bark of p. suffructicosa and stem bark of C. cassia as they gave minimum numbers of galls on tomato roots (4.7% and 8.9%, respectively, relative to control) as compared to other treatments. Another study with root bark of p. suffructicosa and C. cassia at different application doses also showed consistent results in reducing gall number. The control efficacy decreased as the application doses were lower-ed, indicating their dose-dependent control activities. These treatments significantly enhanced aboveground plant growths (total masses).

  • We investigated the optimal cultivation system and dry processing method of rhizomes from Curcuma longa L. in Suncheon, the southern area of Korea. The experimental results are summarized as followings. Curcma longa rhizomes were transplanted on Apr. 30th, May 10th, and May 20th. The plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and yield were highest in transplanted on May 10th. The fresh rhizome weight of Curcma longa was the heaviest in November 20 and the optimal dry temperature was $40^{\circ}C$. In sensory evaluations, there were significant differences among the Curcuma longa pills in terms of flavor, color, color and texture and overall acceptability, and honey added groups received significantly higher scores than the other groups.

Changes of Major Components and Growth Characteristics According to Harvesting Times of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (단삼의 수확시기에 따른 생육 특성 및 주요 성분 변이)

  • Background : This study examined the effect of harvesting time on the growth, yield characteristics, and major beneficial components in Salvia miltiorrhiza. Methods and Results : Although plant height, stem diameter and branch length were not affected by harvesting time, the number of stems was highest when harvested in mid October. There were no differences in root length and thickness, however, the rhizome was thicker when it was harvested at the end of October or early November than when it was harvested in early and mid October. The dried root weight also showed a similar pattern. However, there was a statistically significant increase to 408 kg (16%) in the rhizome weight when in late October and a rise to 455 kg (29%) when harvested in early November. Harvest time had little effect on the content of the major component of S. miltiorrhiza. For example, salvianolic acid content rose from 9.42 to 9.64% with later harvest times, and tanshinone ${\prod}A$ content was tended to be slightly more increased in mid October which S. miltiorrhiza has 0.22% tanshinon ${\prod}A$ than in early October. Conclusions : According to these results, the optimum harvest time for S. miltiorrhiza is early November when plant or major component yields are hightest. There were no significant harvest time effects on the major beneficial components.

Growth Characteristics of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. in its Native Habitat (삽주의 자생지 환경과 생육 특성)

  • This study was carried out to obtain the basic information for effective conservation and cultivation of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. The soil texture was sandy loam with low pH and high organic matter content compared to general cultivative land. Aerial part growth such as plant height, number of leaf, leaf length and leaf width was the highest in Tongyong indigenous species, but fresh rhizome weight was the highest in Pyongchang. Frequency of light penetration rate was high at $60{\sim}80%$ of full sun-light, but growth was better in high light penetration rate. The correlation between growth characteristics and habitat environment were investigated in 59 districts. Correation among growth characteristics in habitat, fresh rhizome weight was significant with plant height, number of leaf and stem diameter.

Possibilities of Wasabia japonica Matsum Culture using Cold Water of the Soyang River Dam (소양강댐의 냉수(冷水)를 이용한 고추냉이 재배 가능성)

  • We performed an experiment to confirm the possibility of wasabi culture using the wat­er of the Soyang River Dam in Chunchon and the ground water in Suwon. Water mineral content of Soyang River except for P was less than that of ground water of Suwon. Dis­solved oxgen and E C of Chunchon was proper to culture wasabi but E C and dissolved oxgen of Suwon was not suitable for that. Water temp. of Soyang river was very changable by month while that of the ground water in Suwon was kept constantly. In Soyang river of Chunchon the month that water temp. show $8{\sim}18^{\circ}C$, optimal growth temp., was May to Nov. and the month that water temp. show less than $6^{\circ}C$, growth limit temp., was $Jan.\;{\sim}\;Feb.$ of Chunchon. Rhizome weight of main stem in Chunchon and Suwon was 63g and 22g per plant and rate of maketable rhizome was each 80%, 0% by culture of 32 months to include raising see­dling period of 13 months. Dry matter partitioning ratio of petiole in Soyang river of Chunchon was the highest of all others but it was lowest of all others in ground water of Suwon. Rhizome weight of main stem in Chunchon was showed possitive correlation with plant height and fresh top weight and in Suwon it was showed possitive correlation with root weight and high possitive correlation with No. of total leaves and No. of tillers.

Effect of Tuber Size, Bud and Tuber Removal, Tuber Cutting on Growth of Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi (괴경(塊莖)의 크기 및 절제(切除)가 올방개의 생육(生育)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • This study was examined for the effect of tuber size, bud and tuber removal, and tuber cutting on growth of Eleockaris kuroguwai Ohwi. Elongation of plumule and radicle, and the weights of tuber, rhizome and shoot were increased as tuber size is large. The weights of shoot and tuber reduced by bud planting without tuber at 15 days after budding, however number of tubers were increased compared with normal tuber. When cross-cutting tubers were seeded, the weights of shoot, rhizome and tuber were produced as 84%, 85%, 71%, respectively compared with normal tuber, and the number of tubers was not influenced. The weights of tuber, rhizome and shoot were lowed as the bud removal, and there were a great number of tubers at bud removal of 15 days after budding. Tuber of E. k, contained as nonfibrous 78.9gr, phosphorous 77mg, iron 16.8mg, niacin 1.3mg per 100gr edble portion. The positive correlations were observed between shoot weight and tuber weight, and number of tubers.

  • In this study, a propagation characteristics of green kyllinga(Kyllinga brevifolia var. leiolepsis H.) was investigated. Two to three rhizomes(1st rhizome) arised from the basal part of main shoot at 4th leaf stage and were grown to extend on the soil surface. Then new shoots(lst tillers) emerged from every node of the 1st rhizome. Second rhizomes also arised from the basal part of lst tiller at the time of 4th leaf openning. With such a regularity, 5th rhizomes and about 688 shoots were produced from one plant during one year-cultivation without competition under the natural condition. The degree of vegetative growth and seed formation was 3 times and 2.5 times higher in rhizomeoriginated plant than in that from seed, respectively. The amount of seed formation and the 1000 seeds weight was highest in one planted on June 1 and Aug. 1, respectively. Short-day treatment of less than 14hr appeared to be necessary for the induction of flowering and it was effective as treated not during germination but since at least 2 leaf stage of green kyllinga. Each shoot individually responded to short-day. When plants were exposed to short-day (9hr, day / 15hr, night) treatment at the stage of 2-3 leaves, more than 7 cycles were required for flowering induction. Bolting in main shoot occurred after emergence of 4 leaves under the short-day condition. Exogenous $GA_3$ slightly accelerated the velocity of bolting only in short-day condition.

Productivity of Native White Lotus Leaves and Root Grown in Hoesan, Muan of Jeonnam Districts (전남 무안 회산지 자생 백련의 잎과 연근의 생산력)

  • This study was conducted to examine the yield of lotus leaves and roots per one native white lotus grown in Hoesan, Muan of Jeonnam districts, which were promoted by Muan-Gun, Jeonnam as a local speciality. We planted the rhizomes with 2 internodes in a rubber pot in the middle of April. Then on September, 24, 2008, we dug out the main rhizomes and it had grown by 810cm. From the data, the leaf area was $34,442\;cm^2$, the fresh leaf weight was 1,230g, and the dry leaf weight was 235.4g. The weight of the edible fresh stalk and dry weight leaf were 1,325g and 164.3g. Yield of the white lotus root were 1,480g on Sept. 4, 3,880g on Sept. 20 and 4,172g on Oct. 18. Native white lotus are able to be harvested early as September, however, it is be better that it is harvested in the middle of October based on the yield.
