  • A counter-flow type horizontal reactor of metal organic chemical vapor deposition was designed with the Reynolds and the Rayleigh numbers of Re = 4.5 and Ra = 215.8, respectively. The GaN thin films were grown and characterized by Hall measurement, double crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and photoluminescence measurement. The Si and Mg were also used for doping of GaN films. The dislocation density of $2.6{\times}10^8/\textrm {cm}^2$ was included in GaN films representing the geometrical lattice mismatch between sapphire substrates and GaN films. The Si doped n-GaN films provide the electron carrier density and mobility in the regions of $10^{17}~10^{18}/\textrm{cm}^3$ and 200~400 $\textrm{cm}^2$/V .sec, respectively. Mg doped p-GaN films were post-annealed and activated with the hole carrier density of $8{\times}10^{17}/{\textrm}{cm}^3$.

  • The effects of the different rib geometries such as V-shaped continuous (case A), parallel broken (case B), and V-shaped broken (case C) ribs on the heat transfer and pressure drops in a divergent channel with $45^{\circ}$ inclined ribs on one wall or two walls are checked out. The top and bottom walls are adiabatic; two side walls are uniformly heated in the divergent rectangular channel. The tested Reynolds numbers are ranged from 22,000 to 75,000. The channel with two opposite walls inclined only has the length of test section of 1 m and the channel divergence ratio of $D_{ho}/D_{hi}=1.49$, corresponding to $1.43^{\circ}$ inclined walls. The results show in the identical pumping power that the V-shaped continuous rib (case A) with two ribbed walls is the greatest, but the parallel broken rib (case B) with one ribbed wall is the worst in the thermal performance.

  • A control algorithm for a 100 kW wind turbine is designed in this study. The wind turbine is operating as a variable speed variable pitch (VSVP) status. Also, this wind turbine is a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) Type. For the medium capacity wind turbine considered in this study, it was found that the optimum tip speed ratios to achieve the maximum power coefficients varied with wind speeds. Therefore a commercial blade element momentum theory and multi-body dynamics based program was implemented to consider the variation of aerodynamic coefficients with respect to Reynolds numbers and to find out the power and thrust coefficients with respect tip speed ratio and blade pitch angles. In the end a basic power controller was designed for below rated, transition and above rated regions, and a load reduction algorithm was designed to reduce tower vibration by the nacelle motion. As a result, damage equivalent Load (DEL) of tower fore-aft has been reduced by 32%. From dynamic simulations in the commercial program, the controller was found to work properly as designed. Experimental validation of the control algorithm will be done in the future.

  • The present study investigates heat/mass transfer for flow through perforated plates for application to combustor wall and turbine blade film cooling. The experiments are conducted for hole length to diameter ratios of 0.68 to 1.5, for hole pitch-to-diameter ratios of 1.5 and 3.0, for gap distance between two parallel perforated plates of 1 to 3 hole diameters, and for Reynolds numbers of 60 to 13, 700. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients near and inside the cooling holes are obtained using a naphthalene sublimation technique. Detailed knowledge of the local transfer coefficients is essential to analyze thermal stress in turbine components. The results indicate that the heat/mass transfer coefficients inside the hole surface vary significantly due to flow separation and reattachment. The transfer coefficient near the reattachment point is about four and half times that for a fully developed circular tube flow. The heat/mass transfer coefficient on the leeward surface has the same order as that on the windward surface because of a strong recirculation flow between neighboring jets from the array of holes. For flow through two perforated plate layers, the transfer coefficients on the target surface (windward surface of the second wall) affected by the gap spacing are approximately three to four times higher than that with a single layer.

  • This experimental study investigated the wake flow around an elastically supported circular cylinder. In this study, the Reynolds numbers are varied in the region of $1.4{\times}10^4{\leq}Re{\leq}3.2{\times}10^4$. Under these conditions, we have captured the process of the wake mechanism and the moving path of the vortex by measuring the velocity at each position in the wake around the cylinder. Further, these facts from the wind tunnel test are proved by a flow visualization test through a water channel. From the result, we have arrived at the following conclusions : i) The process (formation${\rightarrow}$growth${\rightarrow}$collapse) of vortex is observed in the wake around the cylinder, ii) The vortex efflux angle is approximately $16^{\circ}{\sim}17^{\circ}$ under the experimental conditions. These angles have no relationship with the velocity change and the existence of flow-induced vibrations of the cylinder, and iii) The moving path of the vortex center is obtained by spectrum analysis of the fluctuating velocity behind the cylinder. These are confirmed by conducting visualization tests.

  • Dehydrogenation from the hydrolysis of a sodium borohydride ($NaBH_4$) solution has been of interest owing to its high theoretical hydrogen storage capacity (10.8 wt.%) and potentially safe operation. An experimental study has been performed on the catalytic reaction rate and pressure drop of a $NaBH_4$ solution over both a single microchannel with a hydraulic diameter of $300{\mu}m$ and a staggered array of micro pin fins in the microchannel with hydraulic diameter of $50{\mu}m$. The catalytic reaction rates and pressure drops were obtained under Reynolds numbers from 1 to 60 and solution concentrations from 5 to 20 wt.%. Moreover, reacting flows were visualized using a high-speed camera with a macro zoom lens. As a result, both the amount of hydrogenation and pressure drop are 2.45 times and 1.5 times larger in a pin fin microchannel array than in a single microchannel, respectively.

  • The present paper is the preliminary study of the development of a morphing aircraft wing and investigates experimently the aerodynamic characteristics of a base airfoil and a morphing airfoil. The wind tunnel tests are conducted for a base Clark-Y airfoil, an airfoil with a mechanical flap, and a morphing airfoil. Lifts, drags, and pitching moments are measured by using a three-axis load cell and they are calibrated by considering solid blockage and wake blockage. The wind tunnel tests are conducted for various air speeds, Reynolds' numbers, and angles of attack. The experimental results show that the aerodynamic characteristics of the morphing airfoil in lift-drag and lift-pitching moment are better than those of the airfoil with a mechanical flap.

  • This study presents the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of Ag nanofluid in mini-tubes(outer diameters of 1/8inch, 3/16inch). Experiments were performed for Reynolds numbers ranged from 500 to 2,500 and nanofluid concentrations of 0.1 and 0.3vol.%. The pressure drop of nanofluid flow increased by max. 21% compared with that of distilled water. The heat transfer coefficients of the nanofluid of 0.1 vol.% enhanced 3~42% for 1/8inch tube, and 3~69% for 3/16inch tube. Also, the heat transfer coefficients of the nanofluid of 0.3 vol.% enhanced 35~65% for 1/8inch tube, and 62~125% for 3/16inch tube. From the results Ag nanofluid can be a better candidate as a coolant than distilled water when using in mechanical and/or electronic systems.

  • Turbulent flow and heat transfer in a channel with a detached rib array have been simulated. The computations are based on the finite volume method with the SIMPLE algorithm. The forms of ribs considered in this study were rib with rectangular cross section, rib with groove, broken rib, and V-shaped rib. The ribs were deployed transverse or aligned $60^{\circ}$ to the main direction of the flow. Local heat transfer coefficients were obtained at various Reynolds numbers within the turbulent flow regime. Area-averaged data were calculated in order to compare the overall performance of the tested ribbed surfaces and to evaluate the degree of heat transfer enhancement induced by the ribs with respect to the smooth channel. The highest heat transfer occurred for the rib with groove which was aligned $60^{\circ}$ to the main flow direction. Performance factor was decreased with the increase of velocity, and it was found that the best performance factor was obtained in the low velocity region.

  • Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a plate heat exchanger. The multi-cell models with inlet part and outlet part are used for performing numerical simulation. The plate heat exchanger is characterized by chevron angle of $15^{\circ}$, corrugation pitch of 24mm and corrugation height 6~12mm. The length of the inlet-part considered in the analysis ranges from 24.8 to 124mm and Reynolds numbers range from 1,000 to 10,000. The correlations such as friction factor and Colburn factor are compared with previous experimental data. The results can be utilized for designing the plate heat exchanger.
