  • The unsteady flow in three-dimensional cubic cavity with narrow channel at upper region is investigated experimentally for three kinds of Reynolds number, 1*10/sup 4/, 3*10/sup 4/ and 5*10/sup 4/ based on the cavity width and cavity inlet mean flow velocity. Instant velocity vectors are obtained simultaneously at whole field by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). Wall pressure distributions are estimated using Poisson equation from the velocity data. Results of PIV reveal that severe unsteady flow fluctuation within the cavity are remarkable at all Reynolds numbers and sheared mixing layer phenomena are also found at the region where inlet driving flow is collided with the clock-wise rotating main primary vortex. Instant velocity profiles reveal that deformed forced vortex formation is observed throughout the entire region and spanwise kinetic energy migration is conspicuous.

  • Falling-film evaporation experiments for aqueous solution of lithium bromide (LiBr) were performed on a horizontal smooth 19.05-mm-dia copper tube. Average heat transfer coefficients were obtained with varied film Reynolds numbers, system pressures, LiBr concentrations and degrees of wall superheat. Heat transfer coefficients increase with increasing system pressure and decreasing concentration. For degrees of wall superheat, the heat transfer coefficient did not't show the distinct trend. For this experimental ranges, heat transfer coefficients showed maximum values at an optimal film Reynolds number. The results of this work were compared with pool boiling data reported previously, and it was shown that the heat transfer performance is superior to the pool boiling.

  • The incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of an airship hull. The concept of pseudo-compressibility is employed to couple the pressure field with the velocity field. The upwind differencing method for spatial discretization and a line relaxation scheme for time integration are used. The flowfield around the low drag airship hull of fineness ratio 4 is solved for two Reynolds numbers with a wide range of angle of attack. The effect of Reynolds number and transition position is briefly examined together with the change in aerodynamic coefficients due to a gondola attached to the hull, and the results will be used as basic data for the design of a low drag airship hull.

  • A linearization owing to Oseen originally is performed to study the recirculating Navier-Stokes flows at high Reynolds numbers. The procedure is generalized to produce higher order asymptotic expansion for the flow velocity. We call this the Oseen-type expansion of the given flow. As a concrete example, the velocity of a steady Navier-Stockes flow due to a swimming flexible sheet in two-dimensional infinite strip domain is calculated by an asymptotic expansion technic with two-parameters, the Reynolds number R and the perturbation parameter $\varepsilon$ first and then R secondly. The asymptotic result is up to second order in $\varepsilon$.

  • The present study is aimed to investigate flow characteristics of Two dimensional backward-facing step by numerical approach. A convection conservative difference scheme based upon SOLA algorithm is used for the solution of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations to simulate the laminar, transitional and turbulent flow conditions at which the experimental data can be available for the backward-facing step. The twenty kinds of Reynolds number are used for the calculations. In an effort to demonstrate that the reported solutions are dependent on the mesh refinement, computations are performed on seven different meshes of uniformly increasing refinement. Also to investigate the result of inflow dependence, two kinds of the inflow profile are chosen for the laminar flow. As criterion of benchmarking the result of numerical simulation, reattachment length is used for the selected Reynolds numbers.

  • An experimental investigation is reported on the heat transfer coefficient from a rotating flat plate in a round turbulent normally impinging water jet. Tests were conducted over a range of jet flow rates, rotational speeds, jet radial posetions with various combinations of three jet nozzle diameter. Dimensionless correlation of average Nusselt number for laminar and turbulent flow is given in terms of jet and rotational Reynolds numbers, dimensionless jet radial position. We suggested various effective promotion methods according to heat transfer characteristics and aspects. The data presented herein will serve as a first step toward providing the information necessary to optimize in rational manner the cooling requirement of impingement cooled rotating machine components.

  • A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-impingement jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. To study the flow characteristics especially in the jet flow region, three different distributions of mass flow rate at 5-jet exits were assumed. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) A periodical fully developed flow was observed from the third protrusion. This was also observed from previous experimentally by Whidden at al. The Nessult number at the protrusion surface increased mildly as going downstream. 2) The low Reynolds number turbulence model of Launder and Sharma was found to be adequate for the prediction of fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of two dimensional multi-jet configuration. 3) The Nusselt number at the protrusion surface was nearly proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number.

  • The effects of the inclined perforated baffles on the distributions of the local heat transfer coefficients and friction factors for air flows in a rectangular channel were determined for Reynolds numbers from 23,000 to 57,000. Four different types of the baffle are used. The inclined baffles have the width of 19.8cm, the square diamond type hole having one side length of 2.55cm, and the inclination angle of $5^{\circ}$, whereas the corresponding channel width-to-height ratio was 4.95. Results show that the heat transfer and friction factor depend significantly on the number of baffle holes and Reynolds number. The friction factor decreases with increasing Reynolds number and the number of holes on the baffle, and the heat transfer performance of baffle type II (3 hole baffle) has the best value.

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain an improved interpretation of heat transfer phenomena between blocks and fluids in the parallel conducting plates. Flow is two-dimensional, incompressible steady laminar flow over rectangular blocks, representing finite heat source on parallel plate. Heat transfer phenomena, temperature of blocks and heat transfer into the flow field are investigated for different spacings between blocks and Reynolds numbers. Results indicate that Nusselt number on the far upstream corner of the block was higher than that of any part of the block. As Reynolds number and spacings of blocks increased, Nusselt number increased. The distribution of local Nusselt number on the top surface of the conducting plate is similar to the case with insulated plate. Temperature of the block which has heat source in half cubage was approximately twice as high as temperature of the block which has heat source in whole cubage. As Reynolds number and spacings of blocks increased, overall temperature decreased. The peak value of block temperature occurred at position shifted to the right or upper right from center. The maximum temperature of block can be expressed as a function of Reynolds number, spacings between blocks, position of maximum temperature of each block and then it is possible to predict the maximum temperature of blocks.

  • It has long been studied about the flow around bluff bodies, but the effect of aspect ratio on the sharp-edged bodies in thick turbulent boundary layers is still argued. The author investigates the flow characteristics around a series of rectangular bodies ($40^d{\times}80^w{\times}80^h$, $80^d{\times}80^w{\times}80^h$ and $160^d{\times}80^w{\times}80^h$ in mm) placed in a deep turbulent boundary layer. The study is aiming to identify the extant Reynolds number independence of the rectangular bodies and furthermore understand the surface pressure distribution around the bodies such as the suction pressure in the leading edge, when the shape of bodies is changed, responsible for producing extreme suction pressures around the bluff bodies. The experiments are carried out at three different Reynolds numbers, based on the velocity U at the body height h, of 24,000, 46,000 and 67,000, and large enough that the mean boundary layer flow is effectively Reynolds number independent. The experiment includes wind tunnel work with the velocity and surface pressure measurements. The results show that the generation of the deep turbulent boundary layer in the wind tunnel and the surface pressure around the bodies were all independent of Reynolds number and the longitudinal length, but highly dependent of the transverse width.
