  • In this review article, we produce a technology tree in the earth observation by remote sensing, which is the Level I technology in the tree. To define Level II technologies, we create a two-dimensional matrix of technologies viewed from methodology and application viewpoints. Consequently the following fields are selected: reception-archiving, atmosphere, ocean, land, GIS, and common technology. For each Level II technology, we extract half a dozen Level III and about 20-30 Level IV technologies. For each Level IV technology, we review the status of domestic research and the approaches for acquiring deficient technology in Korea. Also we survey foreign institutions specializing in the deficient technologies and the time when the deficient technologies are needed. Furthermore we assign priority technologies from the viewpoints of public need and economic benefits. The information given in this article would help understand and collaborate among different disciplines, be a useful guide to a beginner to remote sensing, and assist policy making.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the characteristics of housing policies and apartment designs by comparison of supplying and remodeling apartments between France and Korea. The literature review was used in Korea cases and the literature review, site investigation, and expert interviews were used in France cases. At first, by reviewing the related literatures about the apartment developments and regenerations in France and Korea, twelve remodeling cases were represented respectively in Ile de France and Seoul. As a result, in housing policy, the Korean housing market had a shortage of low-priced houses related to biased apartment developments by private sector dependence. Consequently, the living in Korea generally required the high price in low quality houses. But in France, the housing policies were very successful in housing quantity, quality, and expense. It is involved in balances between the public housing supply and the activation of a private housing market based on the government support policy. Nevertheless, in the success of the apartment as a house type, apartments in France means the social elimination because of the supply method problems and the management failures of HLM institutions. However, in Korea, the apartment implies the successful life of the middle class population because of the competitive evolutions during 40 years as a market housing. Secondly, In the characteristics of remodeling, the remodeling in Korea was for property value improvements. It mainly executed to expand the size of a house by expansion of living space. However the remodeling in France was for social mixes and connections with the surrounding area. It mostly performed by various design methods such as vertical merging houses, partial removal, reconstruction, and construction of a local community centers and mixed-use residential buildings. This study shows the simultaneously remodeling features of those two countries. These findings can be used in developing effective strategies for the public housing regenerations in Korea and other countries.

Especially, for Korea where soon will become super aged society, it would be meaningful to examine the current policy trends and utilization of senior support using ICT in Japan. This study explores the policy trends and utilization of senior support using ICT in Japan through literature review, and then proposes some suggestions as follows. Opportunities for practical use of ICT should be widened in the field of senior support, and efforts are needed to build an information linkage network between institutions for senior support because linkage between care sector and medical sector is important for the elderly support. Besides, simplification of paperwork and easing of burden of care providers or workers in the field should be sought by development and dissemination of various robots. Moreover, the spread of technology for emotional support and stability should be actively pursued by using ICT.

  • Antibiotics are used for the prevention and treatment of infections. This study aimed to investigate the patterns of dental antibiotic prescription in children and adolescents. The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service provided data on patients who visited medical institutions. It was categorized according to year, sex, age, insurance type, dental institution, and region. Chi-square tests, Fisher's exact tests, and one-way analyses of variance were performed. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS software (ver. 9.2; SAS Institute, Cary, NC, USA). Amoxicillin and cephalosporins, the most commonly used antibiotics, accounted for approximately 96% of the prescriptions. The younger the child, the more antibiotics were prescribed for trauma, pulpitis, and dental abscesses. However, closer to adolescence, the antibiotics were primarily prescribed to manage impacted teeth and periodontal problems. Antibiotics were prescribed for 3.13 days on average. There were significant differences in the prescription rates according to age, sex, type of insurance, type of medical institution, and region (p < 0.05). This study suggested that antibiotic prescriptions should be closely monitored to ensure appropriate usage of antibiotics.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors associated with long-term hospitalized patients in long-term care hospitals using the quality assessment data for long-term care hospitals by the Health Insurance Review. Methods: Among 1,376 long-term care hospitals, frequency analysis and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the characteristics of these hospitals. Multiple linear regression was conducted to examine the associations between infrastructure characteristics, medical personnel characteristics, health outcomes and the proportion of long-term hospitalized patients. Results: The research findings indicate that the number of patients per doctor, the number of patients per nurse, and the number of patients per nursing staff were positively associated with the proportion of long-term hospitalized patients. Among health outcomes, a higher proportion of patients with more than a 5% weight loss compared to the previous month and the proportion of patients showing improvement in ADL, were more likely to have a lower proportion of long-term hospitalized patients. However the proportion of diabetic patients with HbA1c test results within the appropriate range was positively associated with the proportion of long-term hospitalized patients. Conclusion: The present study results provide fundamental data for the establishment of policies for long-term care hospitals. Based on this study, it is important to suggest screening methods for unnecessary long-term hospitalizations, such as sufficient medical personnel to improve the quality of care in long-term care hospitals. It is also necessary to clearly separate the roles of medical institutions and long-term care facilities and implement policies to support patients' social reintegration.
