  • Mitochondria are ubiquitous and multi-functional organelles involved in diverse metabolic processes, namely energy production and biomolecule synthesis. The intracellular mitochondrial morphology and distribution change dynamically, which reflect the metabolic state of a given cell type. A dramatic change of the mitochondrial dynamics has been observed in early development that led to further investigations on the relationship between mitochondria and the process of development. A significant developmental process to focus on, in this review, is a differentiation of neural progenitor cells into neurons. Information on how mitochondria-regulated cellular energetics is linked to neuronal development will be discussed, followed by functions of mitochondria and associated diseases in neuronal development. Lastly, the potential use of mitochondrial features in analyzing various neurodevelopmental diseases will be addressed.

  • The growing concerns on environmental protection have been constantly demanding cleaner and more energy efficient vehicles without compromising any conveniences provided by the conventional vehicles. The recent significant advances in proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) fuel cell technology have shown the possibility of developing such vehicles powered by fuel cells. Several prototype fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) have been already developed by several major automotive manufactures, and all of the favorable features have been demonstrated in the public roads. FCEV is essentially a zero emission vehicle and allows to overcome the range limitation of the current battery electric vehicles. Being motivated by the laboratory and field demonstrations of the fuel cell technologies, variety of fuel cell alliances between fuel cell developers, automotive manufactures, petroleum companies and government agencies have been formed to expedite the realization of commercially viable FCEV. However, there still remain major issues that need to be overcome before it can be fully accepted by consumers. This paper describes the current fuel cell vehicle development status and the staggering challenges for the successful introduction of consumer acceptable FCEVS.

  • Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is a critical regulator of mesenchymal cell migration and proliferation. The vital functions of PDGFs for angiogenesis, as well as development of kidney, brain, cardiovascular system and pulmonary alveoli during embryogenesis, have been well demonstrated by gene knock-out approaches. Clinical studies reveal that aberrant expression of PDGF and its receptor is often associated with a variety of disorders including atherosclerosis, fibroproliferative diseases of lungs, kidneys and joints, and neoplasia. PDGF contributes to cancer development and progression by both autocrine and paracrine signaling mechanisms. In this review article, important features of the PDGF isoforms and their cell surface receptor subunits are discussed, with regards to signal transduction, PDGF-isoform specific cellular response, and involvement in angiogenesis, and tumorstromal interactions.

  • Changing trends in anticancer research have altered the treatment paradigm to the extent that it is difficult to investigate any anticancer drugs without mentioning immunotherapy. Thus, we are finally contemplating tumour regression using magic bullets known as immunotherapy drugs. This review explores the possible options and pitfalls in tumour regression by first elucidating the features of cancer and the importance of tumour microenvironments. Next, we evaluated the trends of anticancer therapeutics regulating tumour microenvironment. Finally, we introduced the concept of tumour regression and various targets of tumour microenvironment, which can be used in combination with current immunotherapy for tumour regression. In particular, we emphasize the importance of regulating the neurological manifestations of tumour microenvironment (N) in addition to inflammation (I) and hypoxia (H) in cancer.

  • Korean people use a lot of herbal agents for medical purposes, such as curing diseases, improving health state, but some of the herbal agents have toxic side effects. In terms of toxicology, herbal agents classified into 3 categories generally nontoxic, potentially toxic and toxic. But, there are few studies about the mechanisms and clinical features of intoxication of herbal agents. So detoxification or initial treatment of these agents is very difficult to clinicians in hospital. Authors experienced an uncommon case of intoxication after Arisaematis Rhizoma Ingestion. We report this case with review of Arisaematis Rhizoma.

  • As organizations have come to be more complex and diverse, management has come to spend an increasing proportion of its time and efforts in handling organization conflict. Moreover, organizational conflict problems are often not recognized until the balance of interests is destroyed or a radical organizational change such as BPR takes place. Once an organizational conflict arises, however, it reduces corporate synergy seriously, leading to organizational ineffectiveness. Therefore, it is important to identify the cause of organizational conflict in advance and resolve it based on the proper diagnosis as early as possible lest it should undermine the organizational effectiveness. We propose a method that facilitates diagnosing potential organizational conflict and determining appropriate strategy to the conflict, based on the analysis of cognitive maps. To support the application of the method in the real world context, a computerized tool is introduced. The working procedures of the method and the features of the tool are illustrated with their application to the real case of the cable TV home shopping company.

  • Truck dispatching is one of the most commonly occurring problems of transprot management. We developed an interactive decision support system named IDSSTD, for the truck dispatching problem where two conflicting objectives are treated and travel speed varies depending on the passing areas and time of day. The IDSSTD aids the decision-making process by allowing the user to interact directly with the database, to direct data to a decision model, and to portray results in a convenient form. The IDSSTD is consisted of two major interactive phases. The pre-scheduling interactive phase is to reduce the complexity of a given problem before applying the BC-saving heuristic algorithm and the post-scheduling interactive phase is to improve practically the algorithmic solution. The IDSSTD has the capabilities of its own manipulation(analysis and recommendation) and diverse graphic features in order to facilitate a user's interaction.

  • This paper discusses an empirical study on extracting requirements for ubiquitous computing technology-based information system (ubi-IS) using factor analysis. After preliminary review of related literature, features specific to ubiquitous computing technology have been retrieved, selected in terms of main elements of information system (IS) (network, device, user interface, and operating system), and further used as variables during conducting factor analysis. Quantitative data was collected through questionnaire approach. The results of factor analysis manifested 5 factors containing 15 variables, and eventually, based upon the extracted factors the requirements for ubi-IS were identified.

  • Successful correction of the partial form of atrioventricular[AV] canal is now readily achievable. The most challenging technical features of this anomaly are the associated mitral valvular deformity and the frequent inability to obtain mitral competence. Residual mitral incompetence after repair of mitral cleft figures importantly in the causes of early and late failure. So, accurate and complete repair of the mitral valve cleft might be important. Determination of residual severe mitral regurgitation after repair is desirable to permit mitral valve replacement at the time. We have experienced one case of severe mitral regurgitation which was occurred 6 months after repair of partial form of A-V canal [ASD primum] in 22 years old virgin. Pre-op. left ventriculogram revealed severe mitral regurgitation in this patient. We preferred to perform mitral valve replacement with St. Jude valve in this patient at March 1984. Post-op. course was uneventful to now for 5 months and we report this case, review and discuss the literatures.

  • Endolymphatic sac tumor is rare, locally aggressive hypervascular tumor of papillary structure, arising from the endolymphatic duct or sac in the posterior petrous bone. We present four cases with this tumor. Two patients were male and the other two were female. Age of each patient was 15, 52, 58, and 67 years. Three patients presented with progressive hearing loss and sustained vertigo for months to years and another one was referred for the tumor detected in routine medical check-up. Preoperative embolization was performed in 3 patients. Complete excision of the tumor was achieved in all patients using translabyrinthine or retrosigmoid approach. Herein, we describe the clinical and radiographic features, surgical treatment and pathologic findings with a review of the literature.
