  • By the intravenous infusion of saline solution through the postcaval vein, the effects of increasing the venous return on the heart rate were studied in the water turtle (Amyda japonica). The following results were obtained: 1) Prior to saline infusion, when the initial heart rate was below $50{\sim}55/min$ the heart rate was increased by the infusion. When the initial rate was above this value no changes in heart rate were observed following the infusion. 2) When the heart rate was decreased by vagal stimulation, the infusion elicited a remarkable increase in the heart rate. 3) Increased heart rate caused by tile infusion was not affected by vagotomy or sympathectomy. 4) These results suggest that the increase in heart rate secondary to increased venous return is under the control of a myogenic regulatory mechanism, not a neural mechanism.

  • How to plan the energy system is one of the keys f3r constructing the Environment -Friendly City. for this reason, a great number of surveys for utilizing unused energy have conducted by a planner. In regard to unused energy, the heat from incineration plants classify as a unused energy having high-exergy-energy. From this point of view, It is studied about the plant systems providing heat to district heating & cooling(D.H.C) and producing electric power. It is divided four system models as system I (10K [kgf/cm$^2$) vapor as outlet of boiler, supply far 10K vapor and return to 60$^{\circ}C$ as supply condition of district heating), system II (30 K vapor as outlet of boiler, supply for 5t vapor and return to 60f as supply condition of district heating), system 111 (30 K vapor as outlet of boiler, supply for 85$^{\circ}C$ hot water and return to 60$^{\circ}C$ as supply condition of district heating), system IV (30 K vapor as outlet of boiler, supply for 47$^{\circ}C$ hot water and return to 40t as supply condition of district heating). The results from the upper condition of four system, System II got a proper on economical benefits and system IV calculated as benefiting on energy saving effects, and suggest indifference curve as the total evaluation method of both economical benefits and energy saving.

  • This study was conducted to reduce excess sludge generation by recycling of return sludge to the aeration tank after solubilization by electric field charger and ultrasonifier. The return sludge was purposely broken-up to the ratio of $SCOD_{Cr}/TCOD_{Cr}$ at 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3, which was tested along with control (i.e., untreated). Solubilized sludge was subsequently treated in a bench-scaled conventional activated sludge reactor. According to varying $SCOD_{Cr}/TCOD_{Cr}$ ratios, TSS in the reactor was correspondingly increased from 129 to 219 mg/L and $TCOD_{Cr}$ was also from 257 to 335 mg/L. However, TSS in the effluent was nevertheless kept lower at below 30 mg/L and $TCOD_{Cr}$ was also unvaryingly below 40 mg/L. For $SCOD_{Cr}/TCOD_{Cr}$ = 0.3, the amount of excess sludge produced was at the highest decreased up to as high as 78%.

  • Sewers are important national infrastructure and play an essential part by handling both wastewater and stormwater to minimise problems caused to human life and the environment. However, they can cause urban flooding when rainfall exceeds the system capacity. Sewer flooding is an unwelcome and increasingly frequent problem in many urban areas, and its frequency will increase over time with urbanisation and climate change. Under current standards, sewers are designed to drain stormwater generated by up to 10 year return period storms, but data suggests that many in practice have been experienced flooding with exceeding system capacity under increased storm events. A large number of studies has considered upgrading or increasing the design standard but there are still lack of information to propose a suitable return period with the corresponding system quantity to achieve. A methodology is required to suggest a proper level of standard within a suitable sewerage rehabilitation planning that can avoid the exceedance problem. This study aimed to develop a methodology to support effective sewer rehabilitation that could prevent urban flooding mainly resulted from the exceedance of existing storm sewer system capacity. Selected sewerage rehabilitation methods were examined under different storm return periods and compared to achieve the best value for money.

  • This study shows the possible use of the Poisson process for the characterization of dry year return period and duration. For the analysis we used an annual precipitation data, which has been collected since 1911 in Seoul. The highest threshold for the application of the Poisson process was determined to be the mean-0.5standard deviation, and then the results from the Poisson process are compared with the observed. Especially, the Poisson process was found to reproduce the mean duration and return interval quite well and show the possibility of using the Poisson process for the drought analysis.

  • Like other major river basin systems in the West of the United States the Platte River Basin are faced with the challenges of allocating more water for plant and animal species. A part of the Central Platte River was designated as critical habitat for the whooping crane in 1978. The water allocation system in the Platte River Basin is dominated by the Prior Appropriation Doctrine, which allocates water according to the priorities based on the date of water use. The Platte River Basin segregated into five subregions for purpose of analysis. 24 years of historic records of monthly flow and all the demands were complied. The simulation of river basin modeling includes physical operation of the system including water allocation by water rights and interstate compact agreements, reservoir operations, and diversion with consumptive use and return flow. MODSIM, a generalized river basin network model, was used for estimating the timing and magnitude of impacts on river flows and diversions associated with water transfers from each region. A total of 20 alternatives were considered, covering transfers from each of the five regions of basin with several options. The result shows that the timing and availability of augmented water at the critical habitat is not only a function of use by junior appropriators, but also of river losses, and timing of return flows.

  • This study was conducted to develop a hydrological model of catchment water balance which is able to estimate irrigation return flows, so BROOK90-K (Kongju National University) was developed as a result of the study. BROOK90-K consists of three main modules. The first module was designed to simulate water balance for reservoir and its catchment. The second and third module was designed to simulate hydrological processes in rice paddy fields located on lower watershed and lower watershed excluding rice paddy fields. The models consider behavior of floodgate manager for estimating the storage of reservoir, and modules for water balance in lower watershed reflects agricultural factors, such as irrigation period and, complex sources of water supply, as well as irrigation methods. In this study, the models were applied on Guryangcheon stream watershed. R2, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NS), NS-log1p, and root mean square error between simulated and observed discharge were 0.79, 0.79, 0.69, and 4.27 mm/d respectively in the model calibration period (2001~2003). Furthermore, the model efficiencies were 0.91, 0.91, 0.73, and 2.38 mm/d respectively over the model validation period (2004~2006). In the future, the developed BROOK90-K is expected to be utilized for various modeling studies, such as the prediction of water demand, water quality environment analysis, and the development of algorithms for effective management of reservoir.

  • A current velocity measurement radar for a river or a stream estimates Doppler frequencies of return echoes to extract the corresponding surface velocity information. It is very important to maintain the reliability and accuracy of these velocity estimates for water resource management such as flooding or drought conditions. However, received Doppler spectra of water surface return echoes have very widely varying shapes according to different measurement environments and weather conditions. Therefore, serious problems may arise in maintaining the reliability and accuracy of velocity estimating algorithm in a radar sensor because of Doppler spectra which can have many different kind of shapes. Therefore, in this paper, an appropriate Doppler spectrum model is suggested to simulate many various Doppler spectra. This model can be very useful in validating the reliability and accuracy of surface velocity estimates.

  • This study proposes an evaluation method of water supply capacity of a dam, which uses the concept of return period by conducting bivariate frequency analysis of dam storage capacity. The proposed method was applied to the Daecheong Dam for the evaluation. Additionally, the return periods of Daecheong Dam were estimated for the representative drought events in Korea, whose results were also reviewed. Summarizing the results is as follows. First, this study evaluated several climatological factors related to the water supply capacity of dams in Korea to conduct the bivariate frequency analysis and selected the storage on May and the storage difference between June and October as variables for analysis. Second, as an evaluation result of the water supply capacity of the Daecheong Dam, it was found that the Daecheong Dam secures the water supply capacity under 20 years of return period. Finally, it was also confirmed that the proposed method in this study is valid to analyze and estimate the return period of representative drought events occurred in the Korean peninsula.
