Seismic retrofit of an existing steel-reinforced concrete hospital building that features innovative use of a continuous energy-dissipative steel column (CEDC) system is presented in this paper. The special system has been adopted to provide an efficient solution taking into account the difficulties of applying traditional intervention techniques to minimize the impact on architectural functionality and avoid the loss of building function and evacuation during the retrofit implementation. The lateral stiffness and strength of the CEDC system were defined based on the geometric and mechanical properties of the steel strip dampers. The hysteretic behavior under cyclic loadings was defined using a simplified numerical model. Its effectiveness was validated by comparing the results of full-scale experimental data available from the literature. All the main design considerations of the retrofitting plan are described in detail. The effectiveness of the proposed retrofitting system was demonstrated by nonlinear time-history analyses under different sets of earthquake-strong ground motions. The analysis results show that the CEDC system is effective in controlling the deformation pattern and significantly reducing damage to the existing structure during major earthquakes.
This paper presents experimental and numerical investigations of a new seismic enhancement method for existing reinforced concrete (RC) frames by using an external sub-structure, the hybrid seismic retrofit method (HSRM) system. This retrofit system is an H-shaped frame bolt-connected to an existing RC frame with an infilled-concrete layer between their gaps. Two RC frames were built, one with and one without HSRM, and tested under cyclic loading. The experimental findings showed that the retrofitted RC frame was superior to the non-retrofitted specimen in terms of initial stiffness, peak load, and energy dissipation capacity. A numerical simulation using a commercial program was employed for verification with the experiments. The results obtained from the simulations were consistent with those from the experiments, indicating the finite element (FE) models can simulate the seismic behaviors of bare RC frame and retrofitted RC frame using HSRM.
This work aims at introducing structural sensitivity analysis capabilities into existing commercial finite element software codes for the purpose of mapping retrofit strategies for a broad group of structures including heritage-type buildings. More specifically, the first stage sensitivity analysis is implemented for the standard deterministic environment, followed by stochastic structural sensitivity analysis defined for the probabilistic environment in a subsequent, second phase. It is believed that this new generation of software that will be released by the industrial partner will address the needs of a rapidly developing specialty within the engineering design profession, namely commercial retrofit and rehabilitation activities. In congested urban areas, these activities are carried out in reference to a certain percentage of the contemporary building stock that can no longer be demolished to give room for new construction because of economical, historical or cultural reasons. Furthermore, such analysis tools are becoming essential in reference to a new generation of national codes that spell out in detail how retrofit strategies ought to be implemented. More specifically, our work focuses on identifying the minimum-cost intervention on a given structure undergoing retrofit. Finally, an additional factor that arises in earthquake-prone regions across the world is the random nature of seismic activity that further complicates the task of determining the dynamic overstress that is being induced in the building stock and the additional demands placed on the supporting structural system.

In this study a seismic retrofit scheme for the reinforced concrete moment framed structures was investigated using steel bracing and moment frames. The analysis model structure is a 3-story 3-bay moment frame structure designed only for gravity load. The stress/strain concentration in brace-RC frame connection was investigated using finite element analysis. To prevent premature joint failure, steel moment frames were placed inside of middle bay of the RC frame. Two types of braces, steel braces and buckling restrained braces(BRBs), were used for retrofit, and the ductility and the strength of the structure before and after the retrofit were compared using nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. According to the analysis results, the strength and ductility of the structure retrofitted by the moment frames and braces increased significantly. The added steel frame did not contribute significantly to the increase of lateral strength mainly because the size is relatively small.

A comprehensive methodology is proposed for design of metallic dampers in seismic retrofit of earthquake-damaged frame structures. It is assumed that the metallic dampers remain elastic and only provide stiffness during frequent earthquake (i.e., earthquake with a 63% probability of exceedance in 50-year service period), while in precautionary earthquake (i.e., earthquake with a 10% probability of exceedance in 50-year service period), the metallic dampers yield before the main frame and dissipate most of the seismic energy to either prevent or minimize structural damages. Therefore by converting multi-story frame to an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom system, the added stiffness provided by metallic dampers is designed to control elastic story drifts within code-based demand under frequent earthquake, and the added damping with the combination of added stiffness influences is obtained to control structural stress within performance-based target under precautionary earthquake. With the equivalent added damping ratio, the expected damping forces provided by metallic dampers can be calculated to carry out the configuration and design of metallic dampers along with supporting braces. Based on a detailed example for retrofit of an earthquake-damaged reinforced concrete frame by using metallic dampers, the proposed design procedure is demonstrated to be simple and practical, which can not only meet current China's design codes but also be used in retrofit design of earthquake-damaged frame with metallic damper for reaching desirable performance objective.
In the current research, the scheme of displacement-based seismic design for seismic retrofit of concrete structures using FRP composite materials has been proposed. An algorithm of the nonlinear flexural analysis of FRP composite concrete members has been presented under multiaxial constitutive laws of concrete and composite materials. An algorithm for performance-based seismic retrofit design of reinforced concrete columns with FRP jacket has been newly introduced to modify the displacement coefficient method used in reinforced concrete structures. From applications of retrofit design, the method are easy to apply in the practice of retrofit design and give practical prediction of nonlinear seismic performance evaluation of retrofitted structures.

This paper presents a fire exposure test result to evaluate fire resistance capacity of retrofit method using FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) in reinforcement concrete structure. Especially, this paper focused on near-surface-mounted retrofit method; FRP is mounted into the groove after making a groove in concrete. In the test, main parameters are retrofit method and materials for fire proofing. Spray type of perlite and board type of calcium silicate were considered as external fire proof on surface while particle of calcium silicate and polymer mortar as internal one in groove. By increasing the temperature of inside heating furnace, the transfer of temperature from surface of fire proofing material to groove in specimen was measured. As a result, fire proofing using the board of calcium silicate was more effective to delay the heat transfer from outside than spraying with perlite. It was found that the fire proofing could resist outside temperature of $820^{\circ}C$ at maximum to keep the temperature of epoxy below glass transit temperature (GTT).

It is needless to say that the computer and/or computational engineering has contributed much to the development of the earthquake engineering such as seismic design of structures in providing good tools to researchers and engineers. However, it has been also pointed out that the proper selection of numerical analysis and/or computer program is very important for engineers in utilizing it in the design of structures, because a numerical analysis method is based upon its own coverage. A rigorous analysis does not always gives a correct solution in a sence of engineering or of structural safety, but, some times, it gives mathematically rigorous but unrealistic solution. Therefore, numerical analysis should be performed with engineering judgement or experiments specially in the field of earthquake engineering because this field has large uncertainties on predicting the effect of earthquake on structures. This paper is based on the presented paper at the Bertero Symposium held in January 31an4 February 1 at Berkeley, California, USA which was entitled "Needs to Evaluate Real Seismic Performance of Buildings-Lessons from 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake-". The lessons for buildings from the damage due to the Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake are necessity to develop more rational seismic design codes based upon a performance-based design concept, and to evaluate seismic performance of existing buildings. In my keynote lecture at the Korean Association for Computational Structural Engineering, the history of seismic design and use of structural analysis in Japan, the lessons for buildings from the Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake, the building damage due to the earthquake, the reasons why the seismic retrofit has not been implemented much, the responses to the lessons from the earthquake, the Network Committee for promotion of seismic retrofit of buildings, the Law for promotion of seismic retrofit of buildings and the implementation of seismic retrofit in Japan are presented.

This study is the research appling the representative Displacement-Based Design which is the basic concept of Direct Displacement Based Design proposed by Chopra and Goel to original Reinforced Concrete structure and determining the thickness of retrofit Steel Jacket about the Maximum design ground acceleration, and developing the more improved Algorithm as well as program by the Retrofit Design method and Nonlinear analysis by the Performance design method before and after reinforcement appling the determined retrofit thickness. To predict the target displacement of retrofitted columns, a nonlinear analysis model of reinforced concrete columns has been developed to be based on the nonlinear fiber cross-sectional and segmental analysis model, and the seismic displacement level of retrofitted columns is estimated by two procedures, the direct displacement-based design method and the displacement coefficient method. In examples of seismic retrofit design, the current seismic improved design method gives good results in improvements of displacement levels and displacement ductilities of retrofitted columns.
In this study, a new recentering friction device (RFD) to retrofit steel moment frame structures is introduced. The device provides both self-centering and energy dissipation capabilities for the retrofitted structure. A hybrid performance-based seismic design procedure considering multiple limit states is proposed for designing the device and the retrofitted structure. The design of the RFD is achieved by modifying the conventional performance-based seismic design (PBSD) procedure using computational intelligence techniques, namely, genetic algorithm (GA) and artificial neural network (ANN). Numerous nonlinear time-history response analyses (NLTHAs) are conducted on multi-degree of freedom (MDOF) and single-degree of freedom (SDOF) systems to train and validate the ANN to achieve high prediction accuracy. The proposed procedure and the new RFD are assessed using 2D and 3D models globally and locally. Globally, the effectiveness of the proposed device is assessed by conducting NLTHAs to check the maximum inter-story drift ratio (MIDR). Seismic fragilities of the retrofitted models are investigated by constructing fragility curves of the models for different limit states. After that, seismic life cycle cost (LCC) is estimated for the models with and without the retrofit. Locally, the stress concentration at the contact point of the RFD and the existing steel frame is checked being within acceptable limits using finite element modeling (FEM). The RFD showed its effectiveness in minimizing MIDR and eliminating residual drift for low to mid-rise steel frames models tested. GA and ANN proved to be crucial integrated parts in the modified PBSD to achieve the required seismic performance at different limit states with reasonable computational cost. ANN showed a very high prediction accuracy for transformation between MDOF and SDOF systems. Also, the proposed retrofit showed its efficiency in enhancing the seismic fragility and reducing the LCC significantly compared to the un-retrofitted models.
