With the increasing interest in using bacterial biofilms in geo-engineering practices, such as soil improvement, sealing leakage in earth structures, and hydraulic barrier installation, understanding of the contribution of bacterial biofilm formation to mechanical and hydraulic behavior of soils is important. While mechanical properties of soft gel-like biofilms need to be identified for appropriate modeling and prediction of behaviors of biofilm-associated soils, elastic properties of biofilms remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study investigated the microscale Young's modulus of biofilms produced by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 in a liquid phase. The indentation test was performed on a biofilm sample using the atomic force microscopy (AFM) with a spherical indentor, and the force-indentation responses were obtained during approach and retraction traces. Young's modulus of biofilms was estimated to be ~33-38 kPa from these force-indentation curves and Hertzian contact theory. It appears that the AFM indentation result captures the microscale local characteristics of biofilms and its stiffness is relatively large compared to the other methods, including rheometer and hydrodynamic shear tests, which reflect the average macro-scale behaviors. While modeling of mechanical behaviors of biofilm-associated soils requires the properties of each component, the obtained results provide information on the mechanical properties of biofilms that can be considered as cementing, gluing, or filling materials in soils.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to observe stress distribution and displacement patterns of the entire maxillary arch with regard to distalizing force vectors applied from interdental miniscrews. Methods: A standard three-dimensional finite element model was constructed to simulate the maxillary teeth, periodontal ligament, and alveolar process. The displacement of each tooth was calculated on x, y, and z axes, and the von Mises stress distribution was visualized using color-coded scales. Results: A single distalizing force at the archwire level induced lingual inclination of the anterior segment, and slight intrusive distal tipping of the posterior segment. In contrast, force at the high level of the retraction hook resulted in lingual root movement of the anterior segment, and extrusive distal translation of the posterior segment. As the force application point was located posteriorly along the archwire, the likelihood of extrusive lingual inclination of the anterior segment increased, and the vertical component of the force led to intrusion and buccal tipping of the posterior segment. Rotation of the occlusal plane was dependent on the relationship between the line of force and the possible center of resistance of the entire arch. Conclusions: Displacement of the entire arch may be dictated by a direct relationship between the center of resistance of the whole arch and the line of action generated between the miniscrews and force application points at the archwire, which makes the total arch movement highly predictable.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the displacement pattern and the stress distribution shown on a finite element model 3-D visualization of a dry human skull using CT during the retraction of upper anterior teeth. Methods: Experimental groups were differentiated into 8 groups according to corticotomy, anchorage (buccal: mini implant between the maxillary second premolar and first molar and second premolar reinforced with a mini Implant, palatal: mini implant between the maxillary first molar and second molar and mini implant on the midpalatal suture) and force application point (use of a power arm or not). Results: In cases where anterior teeth were retracted by a conventional T-loop arch wire, the anterior teeth tipped more postero-inferiorly and the posterior teeth moved slightly in a mesial direction. In cases where anterior teeth were retracted with corticotomy, the stress at the anterior bone segment was distributed widely and showed a smaller degree of tipping movement of the anterior teeth, but with a greater amount of displacement. In cases where anterior teeth were retracted from the buccal side with force applied to the mini implant placed between the maxillary second premolar and the first molar to the canine power arm, it showed that a smaller degree of tipping movement was generated than when force was applied to the second premolar reinforced with a mini implant from the canine bracket. In cases where anterior teeth were retracted from the palatal side with force applied to the mini implant on the midpalatal suture, it resulted in a greater degree of tipping movement than when force was applied to the mini implant between the maxillary first and second molars. Conclusion: The results of this study verifies the effects of corticotomies and the effects of controlling orthodontic force vectors during tooth movement.
The shape of orthodontic retraction spring was varied and force system of each case was obtained using numerical analysis and verified with spring tester. The factors for obtaining biomechanically efficient spring under anatomic limitation were suggested as follows. 1. M/F ratio increases and L/D rate decreases as loop height increases. 2. M/F ratio increases and L/D rate decreases as incorporating more wire above minimum bending moment area. 3. M/F ratio decreases and L/D rate decrease as incorporating more wire below minimum bending moment area. 4. M/F ratio can not be greater than spring height no matter how much wire is incorporated at the apex of the loop. 5. Additional moment is necessary to obtain enough M/F ratio for translation under anatomical limitation. 6. Additional moment should be incorporated at every pah of the spring because M/F ratio and L/D rate decreases as horizontal spring length increases. 7. Material, cross section, and shape of the spring influence L/D rate, whereas M/F ratio is influenced by the shape of the spring independent from material and cross section.
An unfavorable tipping movement can occur during the retraction of anterior teeth because orthodontic force is loaded by brackets positioned far from the center of resistance. To avoid this unfavorable movement, a compensating curved wire or lingual root torque wire is used. The purpose of this study is to investigate, using photoelastic material, the distribution of initial stress associated with the retraction of the incisors according to the degree of the compensating curve, to model changes associated with tooth ud alveolar bone structure. The following results were obtained by analysis of the polarizing plate of the effects of initial stress resulting from retraction of the anterior teeth: 1. When the incisors were retracted using combination archwire or sliding mechanics, the maximal polarizing pattern of the apical area decreased as the degree of the compensating owe increased from 0 to 15 to 30. 2. When the incisors were retracted by the combination archwire or sliding mechanics, the maximal polarizing pattern of the canine and premolar area increased as the degree of the compensating curve increased from 0to 15to 30. 3. A lower degree of polarizing patterns were associated with the combination archwire technique than the sliding mechanics technique at a given force. The above results indicate that there is no significant difference between the combination loop archwire technique and sliding mechanics, for the retraction of maxillary anterior teeth with decreased lingual tipping tendency by a compensating curve on the arch wire. However, the use of sliding mechanics is more effective for the prevention of lingual inclination of the anterior teeth, because the hook used in sliding mechanics is closer to the center of resistance of the maxillary anterior teeth.
The atomic force microscopy(AFM) has been used, as a powerful tool, to investigate physical properties of supported-lipid layers. Prior to the advent of the AFM, no observation was performed for the physical phenomena at the nanometer-scale. This microscope provides nanometer-scale morphology by scanning surfaces with the cantilever and presents force curve by monitoring the behavior of the cantilever that approaches to surface and retracts from the surface. From the morphology, the structures of the supported lipid layer and the effect of other molecules on the structures have been investigated. From the force curve, the surface properties-electrostatic and mechanical properties-of the supported lipid layers have been studied. In this article, characterization of the structure and surface properties of the supported lipid layer is explained. Future perspectives and direction are also discussed.

This paper may provide a basic design data for the safer car seat mechanism and the quality of the material used by finding out the passenger's dynamic behavior when protected by seat belt during collision. A computer simulation with finite element method is used to accomplish this objective. At first, a detailed geometric model of the seat is constructed using CAD program. The formation of a finite element from a geometric data of the seat is carried out using Hyper-Mesh that is the commercial software for mesh generation and post processing. In addition to seat modeling, the finite element model of seat belt and dummy is formed using the same software. Rear impact analysis is accomplished using Pam-Crash with crash pulse. The part of the recliner and right frame is under big stress in rear crash analysis because the acceleration force is exerted on the back of the seat by dummy. The stress condition of the part of the bracket is checked as well because it is considered as an important variable on the seat design. Front impact model which including dummy and seal belt is analyzed. A Part of anchor buckle of seat frame has high stress distribution because of retraction force due to forward motion of dummy at the moment of collision. On the basis of the analysis result, remodeling and reanalysis works had been repeatedly done until a satisfactory result is obtained.

In esthetic treatment of bimaxillary protrusion, it is important to move backward the anterior teeth segment. For the backward movement of the anterior teeth segment, orthodontic force and segmental osteotomy have been applied on the clinical treatment until recently. These methods caused long treatment time, anchorage loss, the possibility of root resorption and the complication followed by segmental osteotomy. Therefore, corticotomy has become a major concern lately. This research has been conducted to study the efficiency of corticotomy in the treatment of bimaxillary protrusion comparing the profile change, canine retraction velocity and space closing time. The research compared and analyzed space closing time, canine retraction velocity and profile change in two groups of patients. Both groups were formed out of patients over 18 years old who visited the department of dentistry in Hanyang University for treatments. The experimental group who was treated by corticotomy and Skeletal Anchorage System(SAS). The control group who received orthodontic treatment using SAS. The following results are produced after analyzing both groups. The significant statistic difference in space closing time has been observed in the experimental group as compared with the control group(p<0.05). In the experimental group, the significant statistic increase in canine retraction velocity was also observed(p<0.05). There was no significant difference in profile change between the control group and the experimental group(p<0.05). As a result, orthodontic treatment using corticotomy has a reasonable efficiency in space closing time as compared with the existing orthodontic treatment. Therefore, it is concluded that corticotomy with orthodontic treatment can be reasonably applied to dentofacial abnormality.
Objective: With development of the skeletal anchorage system, orthodontic mini-implant (OMI) assisted on masse sliding retraction has become part of general orthodontic treatment. But compared to the emphasis on successful anchorage preparation, the control of anterior teeth axis has not been emphasized enough. Methods: A 3-D finite element Base model of maxillary dental arch and a Lingual tipping model with lingually inclined anterior teeth were constructed. To evaluate factors influencing the axis of anterior teeth when OMI was used as anchorage, models were simulated with 2 mm or 5 mm retraction hooks and/or by the addition of 4 mm of compensating curve (CC) on the main archwire. The stress distribution on the roots and a 25000 times enlarged axis graph were evaluated. Results: Intrusive component of retraction force directed postero-superiorly from the 2 mm height hook did not reduce the lingual tipping of anterior teeth. When hook height was increased to 5 mm, lateral incisor showed crown-labial and root-lingual torque and uncontrolled tipping of the canine was increased.4 mm of CC added to the main archwire also induced crown-labial and root-lingual torque of the lateral incisor but uncontrolled tipping of the canine was decreased. Lingual tipping model showed very similar results compared with the Base model. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that height of the hook and compensating curve on the main archwire can influence the axis of anterior teeth. These data can be used as guidelines for clinical application.

Objective: The aim of this study was to conduct three-dimensional finite element analysis of individual tooth displacement and stress distribution when a posterior retraction force of 200 g was applied at different positions of the retraction hook on the transpalatal arch (TPA) of a molar, and over different lengths of the lever arm on the maxillary anterior teeth in lingual orthodontics. Methods: A three-dimensional finite element model, including the entire upper dentition, periodontal ligaments, and alveolar bones, was constructed on the basis of a sample (Nissan Dental Product, Kyoto, Japan) survey of Asian adults. Individual movement of the incisal edge and root apex was estimated along the x-, y-, and z-coordinates to analyze tooth displacement and von Mises stress distribution. Results: When the length of the lever arm was 15 mm and 20 mm, the incisal edge and root apex of the anterior teeth was displaced lingually, with a maximum lingual displacement at the lever arm length of 20 mm. When the posterior retraction hook was on the root apex, the molars showed distal displacement. When the length of the lever arm was 20 mm, anterior extrusion was reduced and the crown of the canine displaced toward the buccal side, in which case, the retraction hook was on the edge, rather than at the center, of the TPA. Conclusions: The results of the analysis showed that when 6 anterior teeth were retracted posteriorly, lateral displacement of the canine and lingual displacement of the incisal edge and root apex of the anterior teeth occur without the extrusion of the anterior segment when the length of the lever arm is longer, and the posterior retraction hook is in the midpalatal area.
