Effect of Feeding Bypass Protein with Urea Treated Jowar Kadbi (Sorghum Straw) on Performance of Cross Bred (HF × DEONI) Calve

  • A study was made of the efficiency of ammonia N retention by Jowar kadbi (sorghum straw), initially 6.41% crude protein (CP), treated with 4% urea solution. After 30 days the CP in straw that was unchaffed and had been left uncovered was 10.02, and in chaffed straw that had been covered with a polythene sheet was 10.9%. The two treated straws were each fed to six crossbred (HF$\times$Deoni) calves, initially $12{\pm}2$ months old and $86.7{\pm}3.2kg$ bodyweight. They were also given two isocaloric (70% TDN) and isonitrogenous (20% CP) concentrate mixtures differing in calculated Rumen Degradable to Undegradable Dietary Protein ratio (RDP:UDP). Those fed the unchaffed uncovered treated straw (treatment C) received 65 RDP:35UDP and the other group (T1) received concentrate with a 55:45 ratio. The T1 group had the higher DM intake (p<0.01) in total (306 vs 268 kg), per day (4.1 vs 3.6 kg) and per unit bodyweight. Digestibility of DM, OM, CP and NDF, but not ADF, was higher in T1 and that group had the higher daily gain (517 vs 333 g) and higher total gain (38.8 vs 25.0 kg) over the 75 d of the feeding trial. It is concluded that chaffing and covering of Jowar kadbi treated with urea, not likely to be adopted by farmers because of financial constraints, does not confer important benefits. A concentrate supplement (estimated 45% of the CP as UDP) to calves given the treated straw has a beneficial effect on their growth and development.

  • Vector data compression algorithm can meet requirements of different levels and scales by reducing the data amount of vector graphics, so as to reduce the transmission, processing time and storage overhead of data. In view of the fact that large threshold leading to comparatively large error in Douglas-Peucker vector data compression algorithm, which has difficulty in maintaining the uncertainty of shape features and threshold selection, a segmented Douglas-Peucker algorithm based on node importance is proposed. Firstly, the algorithm uses the vertical chord ratio as the main feature to detect and extract the critical points with large contribution to the shape of the curve, so as to ensure its basic shape. Then, combined with the radial distance constraint, it selects the maximum point as the critical point, and introduces the threshold related to the scale to merge and adjust the critical points, so as to realize local feature extraction between two critical points to meet the requirements in accuracy. Finally, through a large number of different vector data sets, the improved algorithm is analyzed and evaluated from qualitative and quantitative aspects. Experimental results indicate that the improved vector data compression algorithm is better than Douglas-Peucker algorithm in shape retention, compression error, results simplification and time efficiency.

The Synthesis of Diphenyl ethanolamidophosphate (DPEAP) and the Flame Retardancy of Cotton Fabric (Diphenyl ethanolamidophosphate의 합성과 면섬유에 대한 방염성)

  • Diphenyl ethanolamidophosphate(DPEAD) was synthesized for the purpose of developing a new flame retardant for cotton fabric. As the intermediate material was used diphenyl chlorophosphate(DPCP) and it was synthesized by using phosphorus oxychloride and phenol as the starting materials. The final product DPEAP was obtained by the reaction of DPCP and ethanolamine. The flame retardancy of cotton fabrics treated by DPEAP through pad-dry-cure(PDC) process was examined at various conditions. The physical property change of the DPEAP treated cotton fabrics were investigated by examining the drape stiffness, the wrinkle recovery, and the tensile strength. The results are summarized as follows: (1) DPEAP has shown excellent flame retardancy on cotton fabrics in comparison to other flame retardants for cotton fabrics available commercially. (2) The optimal condition for PDC process found was that the curing temperature was 16$0^{\circ}C$, the DPEAP concentration was 10%, the catalyst $({NH_{4})_{2}HPO_{4}$ concentration was 7.0%, and the fixing agent hexamethylol melamine (HMM)/DPEAP weight ratio was 1/8. (3) The wrinkle recovery of the processed fabrics increased with increasing DPEAP concentration. (4) The drape stiffness of the cotton fabrics treated by DPEAP have shown essentially no change until increasing DPEAP concentration to 15 %, however DPEAP concentration exceeds 20% the drape stiffness increased drastically with increasing DPEAP concentration. When DPEAP concentration is kept constant the drape stiffness increased with increasing $({NH_{4})_{2}HPO_{4}$ concentration and HMM/DPEAP weight ratio. (5) The tensile strength of the processed fabrics was lower than that of untreated fabrics, but the tensile strength retention increased with increasing DPEAP concentration.

A study of the Body Growth and Development in Albino Rats Fed by the Cereals and Legumes Proteins (곡류 및 두류 단백질이 흰쥐의 성장 발육에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was designed to compare the Biological effects of the cereals and legumes Proteins on albino rats. Fifty weaning albino rats weighing $49\;gr{\pm}2$ in both sexes were divided into 5 groups and fed corn crude protein diet, wheat crude protein diet, soybean protein diet, yeast diet and 30% sugar-casein diet for the control group. The protein contains same levels with isocaloric values each diet. After 12 weeks the rats were sacrificed for chemical analysis and the results are as follow ; 1. The highest food consumption was found in the groups of yeast and soybean, and the lowest was found in the groups of wheat diet and corn diet. 2. The groups of yeast & soybean protein showed the highest body weight increase, while the groups of wheat diet and corn diet showed the lowest. 3. Highly significant difference was found between the standard group and the groups of corn protein and soybean protein in Food Efficiency Ratio. (F. E. R.) (p<0.01). 4. Protein Efficiency Ratio showed a similar pattern as the F.E.R., however, there was no significant differences among the groups. 5. The kind of diets did not influence the hematology of the subjects. 6. The rate of nitrogen retention of male standard group was lower compared with all the experimental groups (p<0.01), and that of female soybean group was higher than any other groups (p<0.01). 7. Female corn diet group had the lowest organ weights, as found in the growth rate, which was significant (p<0.01). In the male corn diet group only the kidney showed significantly low in weight (p<0.01), and the spleen of male yeast group was also shown low with significance (p<0.01). 8. Nitrogen retentions of the liver and muscle in male corn diet group were lower than any other groups (p<0.05), and the brain nitrogen content of female standard group was high with significance (p<0.01). According to the results above, yeast and soybean protein can be regarded as a nutritious and also inexpensive protein sources.

Process Optimization of Red Pepper Drying for the Improvement of Drying Efficiency (건조효율 향상을 위한 고추건조공정의 최적화)

  • Drying process in a fixed bed red pepper dryer was modeled and simulated. Drying efficiency describing the effectiveness of energy usage in red pepper drying was defined as a ratio of energy used for moisture evaporation to total energy consumption, and expressed in combination of measurable temperature variables. The efficiency was compared with real evaporative efficiency and tested in the simulated and experimental drying. An overall drying efficiency was derived, and analyzed for various control variables consisting of drying temperature, air recycle ratio and air flow rate. Optimal operation conditions of drying was then searched by Box's complex method by using it as an objective function. Carotenoids retention was simulated and put as a constraint of product quality in the optimization. The optimization results gave that two staged drying operation could improve the ding efficiency compared with single staged drying. As a technique for further energy saving automatic termination of drying appeared feasible by monitoring an exit air temperature from dryer.

Improvement of Nutritive Value of Soybean bran by Fermentation (대두피를 이용한 발효사료의 개발 연구)

  • This study was designed to investigate the nutritional value of fermented soybean bran as animal feed. Natural soybean bran has low protein quality and high cellulase contents. The soybean bran was supplemented by urea and ammoniumsulfate as N-source for incubation of Aspergillus niger. After incubation of soybean bran with Aspergillus niger, the nutritional quality of protein and riboflavin contents were increased in general and more in aging process than in fermentation. In order to elucidate the biological efficiency of prepared soybean bran, 120 male weanling rats were divided into 22 groups, five rats each, and were fed by standard casein diet mixed with soybean bran in the proportion of 1/10, 1/15, 1/20 respectively. The animals were kept under the experimental diet for nine weeks. In the result of this study, food efficiency ratio showed higher in the groups of urea and ammonium-sulfate-add group than row soybean bran group but the former group is lower than the later in the body weight gains. Protein efficiency ratio was also same trend. It was noteworthy that the nitrogen retention rate in total body on the basis of urinary nitrogen excretion and dietary intake nitrogen and in big organ such as liver and spleen were higher in fermented group than raw soybean bran fed group. It was worth while to treat the soybean bran in first place fermentation and further aging process to elevate the biological efficiency and effect of nutritional values specifically of protein and of riboflavin.

Runoff Reduction Effect of Rainwater Retentive Green roof (저류형 옥상녹화의 우수유출저감에 대한 연구)

  • Purpose: There is a growing interest in rainwater runoff reduction effect of green roof, as flooding caused by increasing impervious surface is becoming more and more frequent in urban areas. This study was conducted to prove runoff reduction and runoff delay effect of the retentive green roof and to investigate its influencing factors to the rainfall events that occurred in the summer of 2013. Method: The experiment intended to monitor the runoff quantity of the retentive green roof($140m^2$) and normal roof($100m^2$) in #35 building in Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea for 75 days in 2013. Result: On analysis of 9 rainfall events, it showed that the retentive green roof has 24.8~100% of runoff reduction ratio, 21.2~100% of peak flow reduction ratio, 0.5~3.75 hours of peak delay, and $1.8{\sim}7.2m^3$ of retaining capacity in an area of $140m^2$. It shows different results depending on rainfall and antecedent dry days. The results show that runoff reduction effect is effective when the rainfall is less than 50 mm and antecedent dry day is longer than five days on average. By installing retentive green roofs on buildings, it can help mitigate urban floods and rehabilitate urban water cycle.

Ultra-Low Powered CNT Synaptic Transistor Utilizing Double PI:PCBM Dielectric Layers (더블 PI:PCBM 유전체 층 기반의 초 저전력 CNT 시냅틱 트랜지스터)

  • We demonstrated a CNT synaptic transistor by integrating 6,6-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester(PCBM) molecules as charge storage molecules in a polyimide(PI) dielectric layer with carbon nanotubes(CNTs) for the transistor channel. Specifically, we fabricated and compared three different kinds of CNT-based synaptic transistors: a control device with $Al_2O_3/PI$, a single PCBM device with $Al_2O_3/PI:PCBM$(0.1 wt%), and a double PCBM device with $Al_2O_3/PI:PCBM$(0.1 wt%)/PI:PCBM(0.05 wt%). Statistically, essential device parameters such as Off and On currents, On/Off ratio, device yield, and long-term retention stability for the three kinds of transistor devices were extracted and compared. Notably, the double PCBM device exhibited the most excellent memory transistor behavior. Pulse response properties with postsynaptic dynamic current were also evaluated. Among all of the testing devices, double PCBM device consumed such low power for stand-by and its peak current ratio was so large that the postsynaptic current was also reliably and repeatedly generated. Postsynaptic hole currents through the CNT channel can be generated by electrons trapped in the PCBM molecules and last for a relatively short time(~ hundreds of msec). Under one certain testing configuration, the electrons trapped in the PCBM can also be preserved in a nonvolatile manner for a long-term period. Its integrated platform with extremely low stand-by power should pave a promising road toward next-generation neuromorphic systems, which would emulate the brain power of 20 W.

Preservative Effect of Natural Antimicrobial Substances Used as Steeping and Packaging Agent on Postharvested Strawberries (천연항균물질을 침지 및 포장소재로 이용한 딸기의 저장효과)

  • Coptis chinensis extract and grapefruit seed extract, natural antimicrobial substances, were applied to the dipping treatment of strawberry and incorporated in the packaging films. Strawberry was steeped in the extract solutions of 50 ppm concentration and packed with the low density polyethylene(LDPE) films incorporated with 1% extracts. During the storage at 5$^{\circ}C$, the qualities of microbial counts, awぶy ratio, texture and chemical attributes were measured for the pretreated strawberry. The LDPE films incorporated with the extracts retarded the growth of aerobic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and yeast that had been contaminated before the pretreatment, significantly lowed the decay ratio, and gave better retention of textural firmness. The chemical and physical qualities of strawberry were not affected by the packaging films. When strawberry was steeped in the extract solutions, the effects of the packaging film incorporated with the extracts on the qualities of strawberry were accelerated.

Smile esthetics: Evaluation of long-term changes in the transverse dimension

  • Objective: To analyze the long-term changes in maxillary arch widths and buccal corridor ratios in orthodontic patients treated with and without premolar extractions. Methods: The study included 53 patients who were divided into the extraction (n = 28) and nonextraction (n = 25) groups. These patients had complete orthodontic records from the pretreatment (T1), posttreatment (T2), and postretention (T3) periods. Their mean retention and postretention times were 4 years 2 months and 17 years 8 months, respectively. Dental models and smiling photographs from all three periods were digitized to compare the changes in three dental arch width measurements and three buccal corridor ratios over time between the extraction and nonextraction groups. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance tests. Post-hoc multiple comparisons were made using Bonferroni correction. Results: Soft-tissue extension during smiling increased with age in both groups. The maximum dental width to smile width ratio (MDW/SW) also showed a favorable increase with treatment in both groups (p < 0.05), and remained virtually stable at T3 (p > 0.05). According to the MDW/SW ratio, the mean difference in the buccal corridor space of the two groups was $2.4{\pm}0.2%$ at T3. Additionally, no significant group ${\times}$ time interaction was found for any of the buccal corridor ratios studied. Conclusions: Premolar extractions did not negatively affect transverse maxillary arch widths and buccal corridor ratios. The long-term outcome of orthodontic treatment was comparable between the study groups.
