  • The 2006 Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) defines ecosystem services (ES) as "the benefits people obtain from ecosystems". Identifying where ES originates, whom it benefits and how it is changing over a period of time is critical in rapidly developing country like Nepal, where the risk of ES loss is high. In the context of various ecosystem services provided by watershed, this study, particularly deals with water yield, Soil loss and Carbon sequestration computation and evaluation in Bagmati Basin of Nepal. As Bagmati Basin incorporates capital city Kathmandu of nepal, land use change is significant over decades and mapping of ES is crucial for sustainable development of Basin in future. In this regard, the objectives of this study are 1) To compute the total and sub-watershed scale water yield of the basin, 2) Computation of soil loss and sediment retention in the basin, and 3) Computation of carbon sequestration in the basin. Integrated Valuation of Environmental Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST), a popular model for ecosystem service assessment based on Budyko hydrological method is used to compute Ecosystem services. The scenario of ES in two periods of time can be referenced for various approaches of prioritization and incorporation of their value into local and regional decision making for management of basin.

  • Many references report that abnormal diastema except temporary diastema existing in mixed dentition period is caused by maxilary heavy labial frenum, malocclusion, progressive periodontal disease, and loss of posterior teeth. We can diagnose patient as diastema caused by periodontal disease, especially, in case of accompanying progressively destructed anterior maxillary alveolar bone defect, and interseptal bone defect. We report Multiple disciplinary approach for diastema associated with periodontal disease. Periodontal treatment(Guided Tissue -Regeneration, alveoloplasty, bone graft), or thodontic treatment (space closure, redistribution), and the final proshodontic restoration for retention were used.

  • Background Aldosterone has an important role in the pathophysiology of heart failure. Aldosterone promotes the retention of sodium, the loss of magnesium and potassium, sympathetic activation, parasympathetic inhibition, myocardial and vascular fibrosis, baroreceptor dysfunction, and vascular damage and impairs arterial compliance. Objectives We investigated the effects of additional spironolactone to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) / angiotensin-II receptor blocker (ARB) in patients with heart failure. • PURPOSE. To present a literature review on implant overdentures after a brief survey of bone loss after extraction of all teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Papers on alveolar bone loss and implant overdentures have been studied for a narrative review. RESULTS. Bone loss of the alveolar process after tooth extraction occurs with great individual variation, impossible to predict at the time of extraction. The simplest way to prevent bone loss is to avoid extraction of all teeth. To keep a few teeth and use them or their roots for a tooth or root-supported overdenture substantially reduces bone loss. Jaws with implant-supported prostheses show less bone loss than jaws with conventional dentures. Mandibular 2-implant overdentures provide patients with better outcomes than do conventional dentures, regarding satisfaction, chewing ability and oral-health-related quality of life. There is no strong evidence for the superiority of one overdenture retention-system over the others regarding patient satisfaction, survival, peri-implant bone loss and relevant clinical factors. Mandibular single midline implant overdentures have shown promising results but long-term results are not yet available. For a maxillary overdenture 4 to 6 implants splinted with a bar provide high survival both for implants and overdenture. CONCLUSION. In edentulous mandibles, 2-implant overdentures provide excellent long-term success and survival, including patient satisfaction and improved oral functions. To further reduce the costs a single midline implant overdenture can be a promising option. In the maxilla, overdentures supported on 4 to 6 implants splinted with a bar have demonstrated good functional results.

  • Excessive crown height space increases can cause crestal bone loss and screw loosening after prosthesis is placed. Milled bar and implant overdenture can be used as a treatment method for partially edentulous patients who have severe alveolar bone loss and excessive crown height space. Milled bar can provide primary splinting effect and stability between implants. Also, milled bar with additional retention device such as Advanced Dental Device-Treatment Of Choice (ADD-TOC) and magnet can provide additional retention force for implant overdenture. In this case, the patient has a partially edentulous mandible that has severe alveolar bone loss and multiple number of teeth loss after excision due to leiomyosarcoma. Because of the long-term loss of mandibular molars, the opposing teeth were extruded. Maxillary left molars were corrected to the occlusal plane through molar intrusion, and mandibular left molar region were treated with implant overdenture, using milled bar with ADD-TOC and magnet after implant placement. The clinical result was satisfactory on the aspect of esthetic and masticatory function.

  • This trial was carried out to determine effects of organic feeds in comparison to conventional diet on feed intake, digestibility, and nitrogen retention in Korean native goats. Twelve Korean native goats were allotted to treatments in four groups of three goats and then they were housed in separate metabolism cages for 21 days. Treatments included conventional diet (A) as a control group and three organic feed groups (B: organic rice straw, C: organic nee leaves, D: organic mixture of rice straw and tree leaves). The A treatment, conventional diet, consisted of common rice straw and commercial concentrates at a proportion of 60 and 40%, respectively. All ingredients of organic feeds treatments were organically produced-agricultural products without any application of chemical fertilizer and pesticide. Four experimental diets were formulated to have the same ratio of forage to concentrate and similar contents for protein and carbohydrate across treatments and they were offered to goats ad libitum. Feed intake, apparent nutrient digestibility and nitrogen retention were investigated. For chemical compositions of experimental diets, all nutrients except crude ash and ether extract were not significantly different across treatments as we expected. Crude ash content was highest in the A treatment (P<0.05), however, it was not significantly different among organic feeds treatments. Ether extract content was higher (P<0.05) in C and D treatments than in A and B. Even if dry matter intakes for organic feeds treatments were not significantly different among them, they were significantly higher (P<0.05) compared with conventional diet. Fecal excreta were not significantly different across treatments, resulting in significantly higher digestible dry matter (g/day) in treatments of organic feeds (P<0.01). Average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (FE) were more increased (P<0.01) in treatments of organic feeds compared with conventional diet. Digestibilities for most of nutrients except NFC had the same trend as ADG and FE, however, NFC digestibilities for C and D treatments were significantly lower (P<0.01) than those of A and B. Nitrogen intakes for organic feeds treatments were significantly higher (P<0.001) than conventional diet, with no difference among organic feeds treatments. Fecal nitrogen loss was higher (P<0.05) for C and D treatments than for A and B. Retained nitrogen contents were significantly higher (P<0.05) for organic feeds treatments than for conventional diet, but nitrogen retention rate did not show any difference across treatments. The results showed that organic feed supplementation more improved feed intake, digestibility and nitrogen retention in comparison with conventional diet, and thus they could be concluded that organic feeds might contribute to animal performance and a safer production of animal product.

  • Tencel fabrics were treated with cellulase after mechanical prefibrillation treatment. SEM analysis was carried out to study morphological change of the treated fabric. The cellulase-treated Tencel fabrics were evaluated for weight loss and tensile strength. X-ray diffraction method, moisture regain, and K/S value were used to elucidate crystalline structural changes occurred by cellulase treatment. Degree of polymerization and copper number of the cellulase-treated fabrics were also measured to estimate effect of hydrolysis. SEM analysis indicated that with treatment of prefibrillation and cellulase, fibrils were produced and damage occurred deep into the fiber. Increases in concentration and time of cellulase treatment increased weight loss and decreased tensile strength retention of the treated fabrics. As cellulase hydrolysis progressed, degree of crystallinity, moisture regain and K/S value were not much changed. (Korean J Human Ecology 2(1) : 142∼148, 1999)

  • Vacuum cooling were carried out for freshness keeping of shiitake mushroom. Shiitake mushroom was cooled within 30 minutes from $20.5^{\circ}C$ to $0.5^{\circ}C$ by vacuum cooling, and then temperature drop of $6.6^{\circ}C$ per weight loss of 1% was taken place during precooling. Weight loss, surface discoloration and softening were reduced by precooling. Judging from organoleptic properties such as cap opening, discoloration, texture and off-flavor, shelf-life of precooled mushroom was lengthed by 20% than that of non-treated mushrooms. Considering effect of packing material on freshness of shiitake mushroom after precooling, weight retention, hardness and organoleptic properties of mushroom packed with PVC wrap were superior to those packed in carton box.

  • As agricultural companies encounter number of risks in their business, it is very important to control the risks for their stable management. So we examine the agricultural business risks and propose the risk management strategies for the agricultural companies. For these purpose, we analyze the agricultural business risks with which agricultural companies are confronted, and propose the agricultural companies' the risk management strategies. The results of this study are as follows : First, Changing the risk environment of agricultural business, we have to realize the importance of the agricultural risks and risk management in it. Second, When we choose the risk management strategies which are risk retention, risk avoidance, risk control, risk transfer and insurance, etc., we should always consider the frequency of loss and the severity of loss. Third, If we don't control the agricultural risks, we will be in a position to very difficult situation. So, Agricultural companies should lead to stronger effort to manage the risks for their stable business.
