Learning and memory are essential requirements for every living organism in order to cope with environmental demands, and cholinergic systems are known to be involved in learning and memory. Scutellaria baicalensis (SB) and Gastrodia elata (GE) as a traditional Oriental medicine have been clinically used to treat or prevent memory deficits, including Alzheimer's disease. In the present study, we investigated the effects of SB and GE on learning and memory in the Morris water maze task and the central cholinergic system of the rats with excitotoxic medial septum lesions. In the water maze test, the animals were trained to find a platform at a fixed position over 6 days and then received a 60-s probe trial in which the platform was removed from the pool on the 7th day. Ibotenic lesion of the medial septum (MS) impaired their performance in the maze test (latency of acquisition test on the 3rd day, $27.6{\pm}$4.4 sec vs. $61.7{\pm}17.7$ sec; retention test, $7.9{\pm}1.3%$ vs. $5.7{\pm}1.0%$: sharn vs. ibotenic lesioned groups, respectively) and reduced choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) - immunoreactivity in the MS and the hippocarnpus, which is a marker for degeneration of the central cholinergic system (number of cells, $21.1{\pm}1.1$ vs. $13.2{\pm}1.3$: sham vs. ibotenic lesioned group). Daily administrations of SB (100mg/kg, p.o.) and GE (100mg/kg, p.o.) for 21 consecutive days produced significant reversals of ibotenic acid-induced deficit in learning and memory. These treatments also reduced the loss of cholinergic immunoreactivity in the MS and the hippocarnpus induced by ibotenic acid. These results demonstrated that SB and GE ameliorated learning and memory deficits through effects on the central nervous system, partly through effect on the acetylcholine system. Our studies suggest an evidence of SB and GE as treatment for Alzheimer's disease.
This research examined the treatment efficiency and methane production rate in treating slurry-type swine waste using UASB (upflow anaerobic sludge blanket) reactor. The UASB reactor was operated at an organics volumetric loading rate (VLR) of $2.6-15.7kgCOD/m^3/day$. A stepwise increase of the VLR resulted in a temporary deterioration in the COD removal rate in UASB reactor but recovered quickly. The COD removal rate were 65-70% for VLR up to $5 kgCOD/m^3/day$. When organics VLR was $10kgCOD/m^3/day$, the COD removal rate decreased sharply and there was loss of 17.537g of the seeding biomass due to sludge washout. This result indicated that the UASB system cannot be adapted to more than $10kgCOD/m^3/day$ of VLR. As the organic load increased from 2.6 to $15.7kgCOD/m^3/d$, the biogas production rate varied from 3.2 to 10.8 L/d and the methane conversion rate of the organic matter varied from 0.30 to $0.23m^3CH_4/kg\;COD_{removed}$. The methane content showed the range of 70.1-81.5% during the experimental period. The volatile solids (VS) removal efficiency was similar at the low VLR (< $5 kgCOD/m^3/day$), but it decreased sharply at the high VLR (> $5 kgCOD/m^3/day$). The VS reduction rate was, moreover, large those of COD. The result shows that hydraulic retention time above 2 days is essential in case of treating wastewater containing 1% of solids.
The present study examined the effects of krill-derived phosphatidylserine (Krill-PS) on the learning and memory function and the neural activity in rats with trimethyltin (TMT)-induced memory deficits. The rats were administered vehicle (medium-chain triglyceride: MCT) or Krill-PS (50, 100 mg/kg, p.o.) daily for 21 days. The cognitive improving efficacy of Krill-PS in TMT-induced amnesic rats was investigated by assessing the Morris water maze test and by performing choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and cAMP responsive element binding protein (CREB) immunohistochemistry. The rats with TMT injection showed impaired learning and memory of the tasks and treatment with Krill-PS produced a significant improvement of the escape latency to find the platform in the Morris water maze at the $2^{nd}$ and $4^{th}$ day compared to that of the MCT group (p<0.05). In the retention test, the Krill-PS+MCT groups showed increased time spent around the platform compared to that of the MCT group. Consistent with the behavioral data, Krill-PS 50+MCT group significantly alleviated the loss of acetylcholinergic neurons in the hippocampus and medial septum compared to that of the MCT group. Treatment with Krill-PS significantly increased the CREB positive neurons in the hippocampal CA1 area as compared to that of the MCT group. These results suggest that Krill-PS may be useful for improving the cognitive function via regulation of cholinergic marker enzyme activity and neural activity.
The purposes of this research were to examine the effect of the catering company's dietetic internship program through a self-evaluating ability test about management performance between pre and post internship programs and consequently to suggest improvement in the internship program. In this study, two types of questionnaires were conducted in July and October 2006, targeting 41 dietetic interns who trained in a 6 months internship program. Except the 4 dropped interns, data from 37 interns were collected and used for statistical analysis, using the SPSS Win 11.0 version. The results of this study were as follows: First of all, the analysis on the effect of the internship program according to classified management segments showed significant improvements in the following order: purchase management (p<0.001), computer program management (p<0.001), facilities management (p<0.001), accounting management (p<0.01), personnel management (p<0.01), retention management (p<0.01), sanitation management (p<0.01), service management (p<0.01) and foodservice management (p<0.01). However, there was no significantly improvement in management of clients. Secondly, the result of the analysis on the details of each management segment that were significant improvement and changing score was the top 5 duties were as follows: In the purchase management, the score of weekly and daily order management was increased 1.0 (p<0.001), the score of weekly inventory management was 0.81 (p<0.001). In the computation office management, expenses handling through a computer program was 0.65 (p<0.01). In the personnel management, the score of work schedule management increased 0.81 (p<0.001). In the accounting management, the score of monthly profit and loss account management was 0.65 (p<0.001). Furthermore, qualified educational programs connected with the internship program will have to be systematically developed and continually carried out in order to improve service and management abilities of branch managers.
Background: Nutrient release during litter decomposition was investigated in Vitex doniana, Terminalia avecinioides, Sarcocephallus latifolius, and Parinari curatellifolius in Makurdi, Benue State Nigeria (January 10 to March 10 and from June 10 to August 10, 2016). Leaf decomposition was measured as loss in mass of litter over time using the decay model Wt/W0 = e-kd t, while $Kd=-{\frac{1}{t}}In({\frac{Wt}{W0}})$ was used to evaluate decomposition rate. Time taken for half of litter to decompose was measured using T50 = ln 2/k; while nutrient accumulation index was evaluated as $NAI=(\frac{{\omega}t\;Xt}{{\omega}oXo})$. Results: Average mass of litter remaining after exposure ranged from 96.15 g, (V. doniana) to 78.11 g, (S. lafolius) in dry (November to March) and wet (April to October) seasons. Decomposition rate was averagely faster in the wet season (0.0030) than in the dry season (0.0022) with P. curatellifolius (0.0028) and T. avecinioides (0.0039) having the fastest decomposition rates in dry and wet seasons. Mean residence time (days) ranged from 929 to 356, while the time (days) for half the original mass to decompose ranged from 622 to 201 (dry and wet seasons). ANOVA revealed highly significant differences (p < 0.01) in decomposition rates and exposure time (days) and a significant interaction (p < 0.05) between species and exposure time in both seasons. Conclusion: Slow decomposition in the plant leaves implied carbon retention in the ecosystem and slow release of CO2 back to the atmosphere, while nitrogen was mineralized in both seasons. The plants therefore showed effectiveness in nutrient cycling and support productivity in the ecosystem.

This research proposes the use of a composition modulated (ZrO2)x(Al2O3)1-x film as a charge trapping layer for charge trap flash memory; this is possible when the Zr (Al) atomic percent is controlled to form a variable bandgap as identified by the valence band offsets and electron energy loss spectrum measurements. Compared to memory devices with uniform compositional (ZrO2)0.1(Al2O3)0.9 or a (ZrO2)0.92(Al2O3)0.08 trapping layer, the memory device using the composition modulated (ZrO2)x(Al2O3)1-x as the charge trapping layer exhibits a larger memory window (6.0 V) at the gate sweeping voltage of ±8 V, improved data retention, and significantly faster program/erase speed. Improvements of the memory characteristics are attributed to the special energy band alignments resulting from non-uniform distribution of elemental composition. These results indicate that the composition modulated (ZrO2)x(Al2O3)1-x film is a promising candidate for future nonvolatile memory device applications.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary disease characterized by congenital dysplasia of one or more ectodermal structures. Intraorally, common findings are anodontia or oligodontia, conical teeth, and, consequently, generalized spacing. This case presented the oral rehabilitation of a child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. Oral rehabilitation is important from functional, esthetic, and psychologic perspectives. Due to the absence of teeth, the volume of alveolar bone and its growth are decreased, resulting in a loss of vertical dimension and protuberant lips. The treatment involved increasing the patient's vertical dimension of occlusion, fabricating a maxillary partial denture, and using magnets to help retain the mandibular partial denture. A 5-year 7-month old Korean boy was referred to the pediatric department for examination, evaluation and treatment of his disorder. we used magnets on '73 and '83 for enhanced retention of a mandibular overdenture. The magnet used in this case was the Magfit system(GC Co., Japan).

PURPOSES : This study is to suggest time to spray curing compound, the amount of curing compound, and the number of times to spray curing compound based on indoor tests. METHODS : Based on the literature review, two methods are used in this study, One is test for water retention of concrete curing material and the other is test for abrasion resistance of concrete surfaces by the rotating-cutter method. Through those methods, curing compound was evaluated. RESULTS : The result of the laboratory experiment for time to spray curing compound indicates that 30 minutes after placing concrete is optimal. For the amount of curing compound, $0.5{\ell}/m^2$ is the minimum quantity for both concretes. Through test of the number of times to spray curing compound, method to spray the whole amount of curing compound in twice is more efficient than it to spray the whole amount at a time. Also, method of separately 30-50 minutes spray is better than method of separately 10-30 minutes spray. CONCLUSIONS : From the testing results, it can be proposed that optimum time to curing compound is $30{\pm}15$ minutes, $0.5{\ell}/m^2$ is efficient for spraying the whole amount of curing compound at a time, and $0.4{\ell}/m^2$ is the best for spraying the whole amount of curing compound in twice, which sprays it in 20 minutes after 30 minutes from placing concrete.

Effect of several PLA films on strawberry packaging was investigated. Three types of PLA film (non-perforated PLA1, perforated films of PLA2 and PLA3) were used for packing strawberry and the fruit quality was measured during 6 day storage at 10. For comparison, two types of OPP/PE film (non-perforated OPP1 and perforated OPP2) were used for strawberry packaging. Weight loss of all the treatments was below 0.12% after 6 day, seeming to be in tolerable range. PLA3 package showed the best retention in fruit firmness, PLA2 and PLA3 packages the least changes in acidity, and PLA2 package gave the least changes of soluble solid content and vitamin C content. There have been no differences in surface color among packages. Perforated PLA films could be effective for use as packaging of strawberry.

The computational fluid dynamics was analyzed for the pressure distribution, stream velocity distribution, stream line field, retention time and temperature distribution which are applied to the catalyst layer in the RCO reactor to derive the optimum operating condition of the heat condensing type catalytic oxidation (RCO) reactor. The results from the computational analysis revealed that the pressure loss due to the ceramic honeycomb in the catalytic bed of the reactor which is operating currently is not significant and the stream velocity (1.8~2.7 m/s) after the ceramic filter is working in stability without big channeling. To improve the stream velocity distribution of the air stream, it is necessary to extension of the connecting range between the plenum and catalytic bed inside the facility. However, the method of attaching the air stream guide vane or the perforated plate inside the reactor was not so effective.
