It has been known that the conventional retaining wall system with timber lagging and H pile has several problems such as the irregular gap between H-piles, cutting or adding to standard timber, back fill over first step excavation, and especially break-down accident at the disjoint of wall system. In the practical excavation, these problems may lead to worker's accident and the inefficiency of construction economy. To solve the above problems, a new method using prefabricated retaining wall was proposed and verified. The characteristics of the new method is to replace timber wall as free-sliding steel-lagging and connector. To check its verification and application, laboratory tests such as bending strength, tensile strength, and fatigue strength were carried out. Also, a pilot test in the field and numerical simulations under various ground conditions were performed. From the researches, it is found that the prefabricated retaining wall plate can be superior to the conventional timber lagging plate in the strength. It is also found that the proposed methods can be effective in the reuse of retaining wall plate and safe in the disjoint of wall system. Finally, it is desired that the proposed method will be effective in the reduction of the imported timbers and helpful in the safety of retaining wall construction.
Recently, GRS (Geosynthetic Retaining Segmental) wall has been widely used as a method to replace concrete retaining wall because of its excellent structural stability and economic efficiency. It has been variously applied for foundation, slope, road as well as retaining wall. The GRS wall system, however, has a weak point that is serious crack of wall due to stress concentration at curved part of it. In this study, therefore, behaviour of GRS wall according to shape of it, shich has convex and concave, are analysed and compared using Finite Element analysis as the fundamental study for design optimization. Results including lateral deflection, settlements of ground surface and wall obtained from 2D FE analysis are compared between straight and curved parts from 3D FE analysis.

Crib wall is one of the segmental grid retaining walls using headers and stretchers to establish the framework of the wall. In this method, grids formed by the intersection of headers and stretchers are generally filled with the gravel to maintain the weight of the wall. Therefore, the construction can be carried out with higher speed and much economically when compared with the concrete retaining wall. Furthermore, it has high drain capacity, and environmentally friendly aspects also have been pointed out because the possibility of the planting at the front of the wall. However, in the crib wall method, the relative movement between the individual headers and stretchers was generally recognized, and stress redistribution in the gravel filling was also observed when subjected to the external loading and self-weight of filling. Therefore, it has been thought that the distribution of the earth pressure in the crib wall system differ from that of the concrete retaining wall. In this study, the surcharge tests using the scaled model crib wall was carried out to observe the distribution of the earth pressure in the segmental grid retaining wall. The earth pressure was measured in the six specified height of wall, and the distribution of the pressure was analyzed. Furthermore, the earth pressure by computation or by the test using the concrete retaining wall was also considered to make comparison.
Geogrid reinforced soil structures with segmental block facing have been increased since 1990's, because of the convenience of installation and the flexible appearance. In this paper, the behavior of the segmental reinforced retaining wall was analysed with the results of field monitoring. The height and length of reinforced wall are 12m and 25m, respectively. The field measurement equipments are horizontal and vertical earth pressure cells, settlement plate, strain gauge, inclinometer, and displacement pin. Based on the field monitoring, the horizontal earth pressure was approximately 0.3times higher than that of the theoretical method and the maximum tensile strength of reinforcement was 26.2kN/m. The displacement of facing wall was 23mm at the point of 7.1m height of the wall and toward the wall facing. The results of the study indicate that the segmental reinforced retaining wall is in a stable condition because of good compaction & reinforcement effects, and long period of construction time. Finally, the computer program of SRWall is very useful tool to design the segmental reinforced retaining wall.

The main purpose of retaining wall methods for deep excavation is to keep the construction site safe from the earth pressure acting on the backfill during the construction period. Currently used retaining wall methods include the common strut method, anchor method, slurry wall method, and raker method. However, these methods have drawbacks such as reduced workspace and intrusion into private property, and thus, efforts are being made to improve them. The most advanced retaining wall method is the prestressed wale system, so far, in which a load corresponding to the earth pressure is applied to the wale by using the tension of a prestressed (PS) strand wire. This system affords advantages such as providing sufficient workspace by lengthening the strut interval and minimizing intrusion into private properties adjacent to the site. However, this system cannot control the tension of the PS strand wire, and thus, it cannot actively cope with changes in the earth pressure due to excavation. This study conducts a preliminary numerical analysis of the field applicability of the controllable prestressed wale system (CPWS) which can adjust the tension of the PS strand wire. For the analysis, back analysis was conducted through two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) numerical analyses based on the field measurement data of the typical strut method, and then, the field applicability of CPWS was examined by comparing the lateral deflection of the wall and adjacent ground surface settlements under the same conditions. In addition, the displacement and settlement of the wall were predicted through numerical analysis while the prestress force of CPWS was varied, and the structural stability was analysed through load tests on model specimens.
The investigation of retaining wall structures behavior under dynamic loads is considered as one of important parts for designing such structures. Generally, the performance of these structures is under the influence of the environment conditions and their geometry. The aim of this research is to design retaining wall structures based on smart and optimal systems. The use of accuracy and speed to assess the structures under different conditions is one of the important parts sought by designers. Therefore, optimal and smart systems are able to have better addressing these problems. Using numerical and coding methods, this research investigates the retaining wall structure design under different dynamic conditions. More than 9500 models were constructed and considered for modelling design. These designs include height and thickness of the wall, soil density, rock density, soil friction angle, and peak ground acceleration (PGA) variables. Accordingly, a neural network system was developed to establish an appropriate relationship between data to obtain safety factor (SF) of retaining walls under different seismic conditions. Different parameters were analyzed and the effect of each parameter was assessed separately. According to these analyses, the structure optimization was performed to increase the SF values. The optimal and smart design showed that under different PGA conditions, the structure performance can be appropriately improved while utilization of the initial (or basic) parameters leads to the structure failure. Therefore, by increasing accuracy and speed, smart methods could improve the retaining structure performance in controlling the wall failure. The intelligent design process of this study can be applied to some other civil engineering applications such as slope stability.
The damages to the reinforced earth retaining wall are divided into the front wall, foundation, drainage and upper slope. Damage of reinforced earth retaining wall is mainly caused by damage caused by drainage problem in the field. Recently, damage caused by snow removal materials have been occurred. Recently, the amount of snow removal materials used in winter is increasing due to abnormal weather. This chlorides degrades the concrete structure, where the reinforced earth retaining wall was no exception. There has recently been a case in which the front wall of the reinforced earth retaining wall deteriorates due to the chlorides introduced into the back filling portion through the drainage passage. Therefore, in this study, the cause of damages of reinforced earth retaining wall constructed in bridge abutment was analyzed, and an analytical study was conducted on the countermeasure. As a result, it was found that chlorides, which was introduced through the drainage system in the expansion joint of the bridge shift part or the upper structure, is infiltrated into the back part of the reinforced earth retaining wall and damaged. Therefore, it is suggested to improve the drainage system and restored the stiffness of the front wall.
As the scale of public works get recently larger and diversified. the construction of retain- ing walls is required for the effective use of land. In the design of the retaining wall, the reliability and fitness of the retaining wall itself are regarded prudently although there is a tendency to ignore the importance of backfill. In this study, the experiments under various conditions such as repetition-continuity-load, roller-press load, and working space of backfill, are carried out using a model retaining wall similar to the real system. The experimental roes tilts are interpreted theoretically, Using a computer program, the experimental results are analyzed and compared with other theoretical wonts.
The objective of this study is to develop a Stability Evaluation System for retaining walls to assess their safety in real-time during excavation. A ground investigation is typically conducted before construction to gather information about the soil properties and predict wall stability. However, these properties may not accurately reflect the actual ground being excavated. To address this issue, the study employed a differential evolution algorithm to estimate the soil parameters of the actual ground. The estimated results were then used as input for an artificial neural network to evaluate the stability of the retaining walls. The study achieved an average accuracy of over 90% in predicting differential settlement, wall displacement, anchor force, and structural stability of the retaining walls. If implemented at actual excavation sites, this approach would enable real-time prediction of wall stability and facilitate effective safety management. Overall, the developed Stability Evaluation System offers a promising solution for ensuring the stability of retaining walls during construction. By incorporating real-time soil parameter analysis, it enhances the accuracy of stability predictions and contributes to proactive safety management in excavation projects.
