  • There are many restrictions in the application of high-strength HSSs, including yield strength and yield ratio for the 600-MPa steel. The AISC and Canadian codes recommend that the yield strength and yield ratio of HSS members be 360 MPa and 80%, respectively. It is important to understand the true buckling behaviors of HSSs using high-strength steel at the limit states. There are many experimental data regarding the rectangular HSSs, and the circular ones are not enough for high-strength steel. Therefore, this study was conducted to create a better understanding of the buckling behaviors of the 600- and 400-MPa steels based on the results of the finite-element analysis that was done before the experiment. To understand the structural behaviors of the aforementioned steels, the width-to-thickness ratios, the angle of the web members, the yield strength, and the gap of the web members were selected as the main parameters in this study, and ABAQUS, a general finite-element program, was used.As a result, the compression web member reached elastic buckling in the 600-MPa steel and inelastic buckling in the 400-MPa steel. A brittle fracture occurred in the case where the yield ratio was greater than 80%. At the same time, it was found that the limit strength determined via FEM analysis had a higher value compared to the code evaluation with the variation of the width-to-thickness ratio in the main code member. The change in the connection load in high-strength steels was not identified by the other factors.

  • Application of the soil nailing method is continuously extended in maintaining stable excavations and slopes. Occasionally, however, ground anchor support system may not be used because of space limitations in urban excavation sites nearby the existing structures. In this case, soil nailing system with relatively short length of nails could be efficiently adopted as an alternative method. The general soil nailing support system, however, may result in excessive deformations particularly in an excavation zone of the existing weak subsoils. Pretensioning the soil nails then, could play important roles in reducing deformations mainly in an upper part of the nailed-soil excavation system as well as improving local stability. In the present study, the analytical procedure and design technique are proposed to evaluate maximum pretension force and stability of the pretensioned soil nailing system. Also proposed are techniques to determine the required thickness of a shotcrete facing and to estimate probability of a failure against the punching shear. The predicted results are compared with the limited measurements obtained from the excavation site constructed by using the pretensioned soil nails. Based on the proposed procedure and technique, effects of the radius of a influence circle and dilatancy angle on the thickness of a shotcrete facing, bonded length and safety factors are analyzed. In addition, effects of the reduction of deformations expected by pretensioning of the soil nails are examined in detail throughout an illustrative example and FLAC$^{2D}$ program analysis.s.

  • This study analyzed the effect of semi-rigid rafter-purlin cross-linking connection and driven steel pipe base on the static behavior of plastic greenhouse (PG). To promote the time and cost efficiency of the assembly process, each cross-linking connections of space arch type grid that consists of rafter and purlin is linked with steel-wire buckles, and each end of the rafters was driven directly to the ground to support the PG structure. However, in the design process, cross-linking connections and bases are idealized by being categorized as fully rigid or frictionless pinned, which does not appropriately reflect actual conditions. This study takes a full-scale loading test of PG and analyzes the effect of member cross-linking connections and driven steel pipe base on the behavior of a structure. The analysis provided a basis for determining the rigidity factor of member cross-linking nodes needed for finite element analysis, and the reliability of the result regarding the static behavior of PG.

  • This study was carried out to provide behavioral data for its planning and management of civic garden through the evaluation of user's motivation & satisfaction. The civic gardens around Seoul were surveyed. The site are located in Kwangtan-myeon, Sudong-myeon, Wonsam-myeon, Nam-myeon, Buknae-myeon, and Jumdong-myeon, A total of 244 questionnaires were completed by mail questionnaires. The results are as follows: 1. 82 percentage of users are in thirties or fourties most of them have children who go to the elementary school. 50 percentage of users are just typical house wifes. 74 percentage of users graduated form university. 60 percentage of users live in lofty apartment buildings. 2. As a result from factor analysis, their motivations are categorized into four fator groups.: 'to experience nature', 'weekend recreation', 'nostalgia', 'to provide their old parent's sparetime'. And their satisfactions are categorized into eleven fator groups.: 'psychological/intellectual component', 'recreational components', 'instruction/management', 'facility'. 'vegetable cultivation', 'social contact', 'crowing', 'aesthetic component', 'family contact', 'the terms of lease', 'visition time'. 3. The user of civic garden can be divided into four user groups by their motivation. CLUSTER1 can represent the user group who have motivations for 'leisure, relaxation'. They are considerably satisfied with all other factor 'opportunity of meeting new person'. CLUSTER2 at the age of 41 to 50 have motivation for 'health, nostalgia'. CLUSTER3 at the age of 31 to 40 have motivation for 'harvest, experiencing nature'. CLUSTER4 at the age of more than 51 want to let their parents enjoy their sparetime. They are dissatisfied with accessibility, amount of cultivation area, crowding and overall farm management. 4. The regression analysis was employed with predicting the overall satisfaction. The results of regression analysis showed that 69% of total variances was explained by six variables: The most effective variable is 'whether visiting on weekend or weekdays', the visitors on weekdays are far more satisfied than weekend visitors because of traffic congestion, and crowding. The second source of satisfactions are 'psychological/intellectual components', they are satisfied with 'family contact', 'the terms of lease' and 'instruction in farming' are sources of satisfaction or dissatisfaction, and finally 'aesthetic landscape' is the source of satisfaction. The second most important variable is psychological one. Even though the civic gardens were not well equipped, they liked the atmosphere of rural life, refreshness, nostalgia, satisfaction from cultivation plants, and sense of achievement.

  • In this paper, the spatiotemporal data mining methodology for detecting a cycle of power consumption pattern with the change of time and spatial was proposed, and applied to the power consumption data collected by GIS-AMR system with an aim to use its resulting knowledge in real world applications. First, partial clustering method was applied for cluster analysis concerned with the aim of customer's power consumption. Second, the patterns of customer's power consumption data which contain time and spatial attribute were detected by 3D cube mining method. Third, using the calendar pattern mining method for detection of cyclic patterns in the various time domains, the meanings and relationships of time attribute which is previously detected patterns were analyzed and predicted. For the evaluation of the proposed spatiotemporal data mining, we analyzed and predicted the power consumption patterns included the cycle of time and spatial feature from total 266,426 data of 3,256 customers with high power consumption from Jan. 2007 to Apr. 2007 supported by the GIS-AMR system in KEPRI. As a result of applying the proposed analysis methodology, cyclic patterns of each representative profiles of a group is identified on time and location.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the biomechanical properties of fractured adjacent soft tissue during closed reduction after forearm fracture using the finite element method. To accomplish this, a finite element (FE) model of the forearm including soft tissue was constructed, and the material properties reported in previous studies were implemented. Based on this, nine finite element models with different fracture types and fracture positions, which are the main parameters, were subjected to finite element analysis under the same load and boundary conditions. The load condition simulated the traction of increasing the fracture site spacing from 0.4 mm to 1.6 mm at intervals of 0.4 mm at the distal end of the radioulnar bone. Through the finite element analysis, the fracture type, fracture location, and displacement were compared and analyzed for the fracture site spacing of the fractured portion and the maximum equivalent stress of the soft tissues adjacent to the fracture(interosseous membrane, muscle, fat, and skin). The results of this study are as follows. The effect of the major parameters on the fracture site spacing of the fractured part is negligible. Also, from the displacement of 1.2 mm, the maximum equivalent stress of the interosseous membrane and muscle adjacent to the fractured bone exceeds the ultimate tensile strength of the material. In addition, it was confirmed that the maximum equivalent stresses of soft tissues(fat, skin) were different in size but similar in trend. As a result, this study was able to numerically confirm the damage to the adjacent soft tissue due to the fracture site spacing during closed reduction of forearm fracture.

  • 'Carbon-neutrality Assessment based on Technology Application Scenario (CATAS)' provides an analysis of greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction effectiveness when applying carbon-neutrality technology to areas such as energy conversion, transportation, and buildings at certain spatial levels. As for the development scope of the model, GHG emission sources were analyzed for direct GHG emissions, and the boundary between direct and indirect emissions are set according to the spatial scope. The technical scope included nine technologies and forest sinks in the transition sector that occupies the largest portion of GHG emissions in the 2050 carbon neutral scenario. The carbon neutrality rate evaluation methodology consists of four steps: ① analysis of GHG emissions, ② prediction of energy production according to technology introduction, ③ calculation of GHG reduction, and ④ calculation of carbon neutrality rate. After the web-based CATAS-BASIC was developed, an analysis was conducted by applying the new and renewable energy distribution goals presented in the 「2050 Greenhouse Gas Reduction Promotion Plan」 of the Seoul Metropolitan Government. As a result of applying solar power, hydrogen fuel cell, and hydrothermal, the introduction of technology reduced 0.43 million tCO2eq of 1.49 million tCO2eq, which is the amount of emissions from the conversion sector in Seoul, and the carbon neutrality rate in the conversion sector was analyzed to be 28.94 %.

  • INSTRODUCTION Service quality is, unlike goods quality, an abstract and elusive constuct. Service quality and its requirements are not easily understood by consumers, and also present some critical research problems. However, quality is very important to marketers and consumers in that it has many strategic benefits in contributing to profitability of marketing activities and consumers' problem-solving activities. Moreover, despite the phenomenal growth of medical service sector, few researchers have attempted to define and model medical service quality. Especially, little research has focused on the evaluation of medical service quality and patient satisfaction from the perspectives of both the provider and the patient. As competition intensifies and patients are demanding higher quality of medical service, medical service quality and patient satisfaction has emerged as a critical research topic. The major purpose of this article is to explore the concept of medical service quality and its evaluation from both nurse and patient perspectives. This article attempts to achieve its purpose by (1)classfying critical service attibutes into threecategories(satisfiers, hygiene factors, and performance factors). (2)measuring the relative importance of need criteria, (3)evaluating SERVPERF model and SERVQUAL model in medical service sector, and (4)identifying the relationship between perceived quality and overall patient satisfaction. METHOD Data were gathered from a sample of 217 patients and 179 nurses in Seoul-area general hospitals. From the review of previous literature, 50 survey items representing various facets of the medical service quality were developed to form a questionnaire. A five-point scale ranging from "Strongly Agree"(5) to "Strongly Disagree"(1) accompanied each statement(expectation statements, perception statements, and importance statements). To measure overall satisfaction, a seven-point scale was used, ranging from "Very Satisfied"(7) to "Very Dissatisfied"(1) with no verbal labels for scale points 2 through 6 RESULTS In explaining the relationship between perceived performance and overall satisfaction, only 31 variables out of original 50 survey items were proven to be statistically significant. Hence, a penalty-reward analysis was performed on theses 31 critical attributes to find out 17 satisfiers, 8 hygiene factors, and 4 performance factors in patient perspective. The role(category) of each service quality attribute in relation to patient satisfaction was com pared across two groups, that is, patients and nurses. They were little overlapped, suggesting that two groups had different sets of 'perceived quality' attributes. Principal components factor analyses of the patients' and nurses' responses were performed to identify the underlying dimensions for the set of performance(experience) statements. 28 variables were analyzed by using a varimax rotation after deleting three obscure variables. The number of factors to be extracted was determined by evaluating the eigenvalue scores. Six factors wereextracted, accounting for 57.1% of the total variance. Reliability analysis was performed to refine the factors further. Using coefficient alpha, scores of .84 to .65 were obtained. Individual-item analysis indicated that all statements in each of the factors should remain. On 26 attributes of 31 critical service quality attributes, there were gaps between actual patient's importance of need criteria and nurse perceptions of them. Those critical attributes could be classified into four categories based on the relative importance of need criteria and perceived performance from the perspective of patient. This analysis is useful in developing strategic plans for performance improvement. (1) top priorities(high importance and low performance) (in this study)- more health-related information -accuracy in billing - quality of food - appointments at my convenience - information about tests and treatments - prompt service of business office -adequacy of accommodations(elevators, etc) (2) current strengths(high importance and high performance) (3)unnecessary strengths(low importance and high performance) (4) low priorities(low importance and low performance) While 26 service quality attributes of SERPERF model were significantly related to patient satisfation, only 13 attributes of SERVQUAL model were significantly related. This result suggested that only experience-based norms(SERVPERF model) were more appropriate than expectations to serve as a benchmark against which service experiences were compared(SERVQUAL model). However, it must be noted that the degree of association to overall satisfaction was not consistent. There were some gaps between nurse percetions and patient perception of medical service performance. From the patient's viewpoint, "personal likability", "technical skill/trust", and "cares about me" were most significant positioning factors that contributed patient satisfaction. DISCUSSION This study shows that there are inconsistencies between nurse perceptions and patient perceptions of medical service attributes. Also, for service quality improvement, it is most important for nurses to understand what satisfiers, hygiene factors, and performance factors are through two-way communications. Patient satisfaction should be measured, and problems identified should be resolved for survival in intense competitive market conditions. Hence, patient satisfaction monitoring is now becoming a standard marketing tool for healthcare providers and its role is expected to increase.

  • Distributed main memory database management systems (DMM-DBMSs) store the database in main memories of the participating sites. They provide high performance through fast access to the local databases and high speed communication among the sites. Recently, a lot of research results on DMM- DBMSs has been reported. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no known research result on the performance of the catalog management schemes for DMM-DBMSs. In this work, we evaluated the performance of the partitioned catalog management schemes through experimental analysis. First, we classified the partitioned catalog management schemes into three categories : Partitioned Catalogs Without Caching (PCWC), Partitioned Catalogs With Incremental Caching (PCWIC), and Partitioned Catalogs With Full Caching (PCWFC). Experiments were conducted by varying the number of sites, the number of terminals per site, buffer size, write query ratio, and local query ratio. Experiments show that PCWFC outperforms the other two schemes in all cases. It also means that the performance of PCWIC gradually increases as time goes by. It should be noted that PCWFC does not guarantee high performance for disk-based distributed DBMSs in cases when the workload of individual site is high, catalog write ratio is high, or remote data objects are accessed very frequently. Main reason that PCWFC outperforms for DMM-DBMSs is that query compilation and remote catalog access can be done in a very high speed, even when the catalogs of the remote data objects are frequently updated.
