  • In this study, it was investigated if the outflow from incised slope in a new constructed landfill site flowed into it from the neighboring existing landfill site. The water quality of the outflow was compared with the leachate of the neighboring existing landfill site, monitoring well, stream water, and underground water near by the new constructed landfill site. We examined a result of filtering experiment of the leachate and $NH_3$ and $H_2S$ analysis of odor in the outflow site. The results of the experiments were the pollution level of the outflow from the constructed site was quiet high, relatively, and that the micro-analysis of organic materials from the outflow and the odor analysis of organic materials were related with the outflow results. So we supposed that the outflow was affected with the leachate of the neighboring existing landfill site and countermeasures should be made prior to construction.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy for shoulder pain in hemiplegic patients after stroke. Methods For a systematic review and meta-analysis, we set a key question in accordance with participants, intervention, comparison, outcome, study design (PICO-SD). we searched for clinical studies that conducted chuna manual therapy for shoulder pain in hemiplegic patients after stroke 7 databases until September 2019. Only randomized controlled trials were chosen. Results Total 14 randomized controlled trials were chosen for systematic review and meta-analysis. 9 studies used efficacy rate as evaluation tool, and 8 used visual analogue scale. Pressure method (壓力型) was used in 11 studies, followed by osteopathy method (整骨型) and wave motion method (波動型) in 9 studies. Chuna manual therapy showed statistically significant pain reduction effect. Through meta analysis, Chuna manual therapy showed significant pain reducing effect except the study with Chuna manual therapy and electroacupuncture compared to electroacupuncture only. Conclusion As a result, Chuna manual therapy showed statistically significant effect in pain reduction. However, almost studies were evaluated in a state of having probable high risk of bias. This suggests that it requires attention to make an interpretation in this study. Furthermore, more clinical research need to be accomplished in the future.

  • Background: Prostate cancer is rapidly increasing in Korea and professional societies have requested adding prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing to the National Cancer Screening Program (NCSP), but this started a controversy in Korea and neutral evidence on this issue is required more than ever. The purpose of this study was to provide economic evidence to the decision makers of the NCSP. Materials and Methods: A cost-utility analysis was performed on the adoption of PSA screening program among men aged 50-74-years in Korea from the healthcare system perspective. Several data sources were used for the cost-utility analysis, including general health screening data, the Korea Central Cancer Registry, national insurance claims data, and cause of mortality from the National Statistical Office. To solicit the utility index of prostate cancer, a face-to-face interview for typical men aged 40 to 69 was conducted using a Time-Trade Off method. Results: As a result, the increase of effectiveness was estimated to be very low, when adopting PSA screening, and the incremental cost effectiveness ratio (ICER) was analyzed as about 94 million KRW. Sensitivity analyses were performed on the incidence rate, screening rate, cancer stage distribution, utility index, and treatment costs but the results were consistent with the base analysis. Conclusions: Under Korean circumstances with a relatively low incidence rate of prostate cancer, PSA screening is not cost-effective. Therefore, we conclude that adopting national prostate cancer screening would not be beneficial until further evidence is provided in the future.

  • DNA marker is a powerful tool for plant genetics and breeding. In this study, 995 SSR markers were employed with chilling resistant cucumber, known as 'NC76', and chilling susceptible cucumber, known as 'GY14'. Using 2% agarose gel electrophoresis, 145 SSR markers were identified as length variation markers between 'NC76' and 'GY14'. The SSR markers that showed no length polymorphism were then screened using high resolution melting analysis technique and additional 30 polymorphic SSR markers were identified. As a preliminary evaluation for mapping, 20 markers among these 175 markers were employed to a $F_2$ population of 'NC76' x 'GY14' cross. Linkage analysis revealed 13 markers that joined into six linkage groups and seven markers that remained unlinked. This result indicates that these 175 markers could be used for construction of a genetic map using a cross between 'NC76' and 'GY14' for further investigation in developing markers related to resistance to chilling in cucumbers.

  • The growing use of unprotected or partially protected steelwork in buildings has caused a lively debate regarding the safety of this form of construction. A good deal of recent research has indicated that steel members have a substantial inherent ability to resist fire so that additional fire protection can be either reduced or eliminated completely. A performance based philosophy also extends the study into the effect of structural continuity and the performance of the whole structural totality. As part of the structural system, thermal expansion during the heating phase or contraction during the cooling phase in most beams is likely to be restrained by adjacent parts of the whole system or sub-frame assembly due to compartmentation. This has not been properly addressed before. This paper describes an experimental programme in which unprotected steel beams were tested under load while it is restrained between two columns and additional horizontal restraints with particular concern on the effect of catenary action in the beams when subjected to large deflection at very high temperature. This paper also presents a three-dimensional mathematical modelling, based on the finite element method, of the series of fire tests on the part-frame. The complete analysis starts with an evaluation of temperature distribution in the structure at various time levels. It is followed by a detail 3-D finite element analysis on its structural response as a result of the changing temperature distribution. The principal part of the analysis makes use of an existing finite element package FEAST. The effect of columns being fire-protected and the beam being axially restrained has been modelled adequately in terms of their thermal and structural responses. The consequence of the beam being restrained is that the axial force in the restrained beam starts as a compression, which increases gradually up to a point when the material has deteriorated to such a level that the beam deflects excessively. The axial compression force drops rapidly and changes into a tension force leading to a catenary action, which slows down the beam deflection from running away. Design engineers will be benefited with the consideration of the catenary action.

  • Using the bond-based peridynamics and the parallel computation with binary decomposition, an adjoint shape design sensitivity analysis(DSA) method is developed for the dynamic crack propagation problems. The peridynamics includes the successive branching of cracks and employs the explicit scheme of time integration. The adjoint variable method is generally not suitable for path-dependent problems but employed since the path of response analysis is readily available. The accuracy of analytical design sensitivity is verified by comparing it with the finite difference one. The finite difference method is susceptible to the amount of design perturbations and could result in inaccurate design sensitivity for highly nonlinear peridynamics problems with respect to the design. It turns out that $C^1$-continuous volume fraction is necessary for the accurate evaluation of shape design sensitivity in peridynamic discretization.

  • Liquefaction is one of the major seismic damage, and several methods have been developed to evaluate the possibility of liquefaction. Recently, a probabilistic approach has been studied to overcome the drawback of deterministic approaches, and to consider the uncertainties of soil properties. In this study, the spatial variability of cone penetration resistance was evaluated using CPT data from three locations having different variability characteristics to perform the probabilistic analysis considering the spatial variability of soil properties. Then the random fields of cone penetration resistance considering the spatial variability of each point were generated, and a probabilistic analysis of liquefaction induced settlement was carried out through CPT-based liquefaction evaluation method. As a result, the uncertainty of soil properties can be overestimated when the spatial variability is not considered, and significant probabilistic differences can occur up to about 30% depending on the allowable settlement.

  • This study evaluated the support performance of fiber-net integrated shotcrete in tunnel support system developed for the purpose of improving constructability and stability while fully performing its mechanical performance as a tunnel support materials by four-point bending test, two-dimensional numerical analysis, and cross-sectional analysis. As a result of evaluating the flexural performance through a four-point bending test, in the case of fiber-net reinforced shotcrete, the tensile performance of fiber-net resulted in a continuous increase in load after crack occurrence, unlike steel fiber reinforced shotcrete. Also, the results of the tunnel cross-sectional structure analysis for ground conditions and the cross-sectional analysis of fiber-net and steel fiber reinforced shotcrete showed that sufficient support performance can be exhibited even if the thickness of fiber-net reinforced shotcrete was reduced compared to the previous one. Additionally, through these results, the support pattern of fiber-net integrated shotcrete in tunnel support system, which can be applied efficiently to the construction sections requiring higher stability among the rock mass class III, was proposed.

  • This study verified numerical analysis of the liquefaction phenomenon using LEAP-2017 international round-robin centrifuge test results. Dynamic centrifuge test is performed by applying a 1 Hz tapered sine wave to the model soil deposit, which was formed under a water table in a surface slope of 5° using Ottawa F-65 sand. A numerical model was made on a prototype scale and analyzed using the finite difference method in 2D and 3D conditions. The analyses were verified for acceleration and pore-water pressure histories with depth and residual displacement. Verification results revealed that all numerical liquefaction models agree reasonably with the test result for acceleration histories but not for pre-water pressure histories. Numerical analyses showed much smaller residual displacement than the centrifuge test. Thus, it is necessary to compare the results of numerical analysis with the centrifuge test performed by other institutes in the future.

  • Recently, various strengthening methods using carbon fiber sheets (CFS) have been developed for the rehabilitation of structures and applied to the concrete member. However, still research need arises in order to verify the structural capacity of RC member which experienced bond loss between concrete and CFS after strengthening. This is because previous research has focused on the development of design process and evaluation of structural capacity only for retrofit. The appearance of this loss may be initiated at just after retrofit construction. And it will be more serious when the layer number of CFS increases. In order to minimize above mistake in retrofit design using CFS, more exact evaluation process to predict the bond loss of CFS is required. The objective of this research is to study the variation of flexural structural capacity of beam which has experienced bond loss after strengthening using CFS. Experimental and analytical study are performed and evaluation of the previous formula is conducted. Test result showed that the significant strength deterioration was not found until the bond loss of 20%. Overall structural behavior of the beams can be predicted by nonlinear sectional analysis.
