  • This study was conducted to investigate the influences of the rope and the tipping chute restraints on body temperature (BT) and heart rate (HR) as acute response for stress caused by restraining for diagnasis and treatment in cattle. Both parameters were recorded by active biotelemetry. In addition cortisol concentration in blood was analyzed as a indicator for stress response. Twelve cattle were divided into two groups based on hydraulic power, the rope restraint group and the tipping chute restraint group. BT and HR were measured at -30 (base), 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 90, 120, and 180 minutes, including restraint period from 0 to 30 minutes during the experiment. The results obtained in this study was summarized as follows: 1. BT of the rope restraint group was increased ($39.8{\pm}0.3^{\circ}C$) until 20 min after restraint stress for 30 min, and then maintained with high values to the end of experiment. In the tipping chute restraint group, the BT was increased ($39.6{\pm}0.3^{\circ}C$) until the end of the restraint period, but then showed decrese until the end of experiment. 2. HR of both groups was maximized at the beginning of the restraint stress (P<0.05), and then it was decreased gradually but in the tipping chute restraint group showed increase again at the end of the reatraint stress (P<0.05). 3. The cortisol level of the rope restraint group was increased significantly ($9.72{\pm}5.09{\mu}g/d{\ell}$) until 30 min after the end of the restraint stress (P<0.05) and then decreased, but in the tipping chute restraint group showed great increase ($4.68{\pm}1.56{\mu}g/d{\ell}$) at the end of the restraint stress (P<0.05) and then decreased while the tipping chute restraint group was significantly lower than the rope restraint group 30 min after the restraint stress (P<0.05). In conclusion, this study suggests that the tipping chute restraint produces less response to physical stress than the rope restraint but the time for diagnasis and treatment should be shortened when using the tipping chute restraint.

  • In this study, a practical method of shrinkage stress analysis on concrete slab in multi-story building is proposed, which considers both internal restraint and external restraint variation resulting from construction sequence. The shrinkage stress due to external restraint is obtained by multiplying relaxation coefficient to elastic shrinkage stress. The additional shrinkage stress due to internal restraint is obtained by residual strain of the elastic analysis. A verification example was analyzed and compared by the proposed method and commercial analysis program that is capable of time-dependent analysis of concrete. The results of 10-story example building show that the internal restraint of reinforcement increases the shrinkage stress considerably at the slabs under loose external restraint.

  • Generally, thermal stress induced by hydration heat causes cracking in mass concrete structures, requiring a thorough control during the construction. The prediction of the thermal stress is currently undertaken by means of numerical analysis despite its lack of reliability due to the properties of concrete varying over time. In this paper, a method for the prediction of thermal stress in concrete structures by adjusting thermal stress measured by a thermal stress device according to the degree of restraint is proposed to improve the prediction accuracy. The ratio of stress in concrete structures to stress under complete restraint is used as the degree of restraint. To consider the history of the degree of restraint, incremental stress is predicted by comparing the degree of restraint and the incremental stress obtained by the thermal stress device. Furthermore, the thermal stresses of wall and foundation predicted by the proposed method are compared to those obtained by numerical analysis. The thermal stresses obtained by the proposed method are similar to those obtained by the analysis for structures with internally as well as externally strong restraint. It is therefore concluded that the prediction of thermal stress for concrete structures with various boundary conditions using the proposed method is suggested to be accurate.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the welding residual stress distribution according to the constraint or non-constraint welding condition with titanium commonly using power station, aircraft, and ship. The measuring method of the residual stress was applied stress release rating method with strain gages and a potable strain meter. The x direction residual stress generally showed the tensile residual stress in case of res03int welding. On the other hand, the x direction residual stress under non-restraint welding were changed tensile stress into compressive stress on 15mm away from welding bead center. Also, the y direction residual stress generally showed the tensile residual stress in case of non-restraint welding and the y direction residual stress under restraint welding were changed tensile stress into compressive stress about 60mm away from welding bead center.

  • Objective: The study was designed to investigate the effects of restraint method, restraint duration, and body weight on stress-linked hormones (corticosterone, adrenaline, and noradrenaline), blood biochemical (namely glucose and lactate), and the meat quality in broiler chickens. Methods: A total of 120 male broiler chickens (Cobb 500) were assigned to a $2{\times}3{\times}2$ factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design using two restraint methods (shackle and cone), three durations of restraint (10, 30, and 60 s), and two categories of live body weight ($1.8{\pm}0.1kg$ as lightweight and $2.8{\pm}0.1kg$ as heavyweight). Results: Irrespective of the duration of restraint and body weight, the coned chickens were found to have lower plasma corticosterone (p<0.01), lactate (p<0.001), lower meat drip loss (p<0.01), cooking loss (p<0.05), and higher blood loss (p<0.05) compared with their shackled counterparts. The duration of restraint had significant effects on the meat initial pH (p<0.05), ultimate pH (p<0.05), and yellowness (p<0.01). The lightweight broilers exhibited higher (p<0.001) blood loss and lower (p<0.05) cooking loss compared to the heavyweight broilers, regardless of the restraint method used and the duration of restraint. However, the interaction between the restraint method, duration of restraint, and body weight contributed to differences in pre-slaughter stress and meat quality. Therefore, the interaction between the restraint method and the duration of restraint affected the meat shear force, lightness ($L^*$) and redness ($a^*$). Conclusion: The duration of restraint and body weight undoubtedly affect stress responses and meat quality of broiler chickens. Regardless of the duration of restraint and body weight, the cone restraint resulted in notably lower stress, lower meat water loss, and higher blood loss compared to shackling. Overall, the findings of this study showed that restraint method, duration of restraint, and body weight may affect the stress response and meat quality parameters in broilers and should be considered independently or interactively in future studies.

  • Effects of restraint stress and its modulations by ursodeoxycholic acid(UDCA) were evaluated on some biochemical and biophysical parameters in rats. Restraint stress induced elevations in blood alkaline phosphatase (ALP). cholesterol (CHOL), aspartate transaminase (GOT), alanine transaminase (GPT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels. It was also caused adrenal hypertrophy, decrease in weight of spleen and contents of ascorbic acid in stressed rats. As a results, stress indicators such as spleen, ascorbic acid, GOT, GPT, LDH were fastly changed after imposing stress, but those such as ALP, CHOL, adrenal were induced relatively later. UDCA was tested if it has an inhibitory effect against 18-hr restraint induced stress. UDCA lowered ALP, CHOL, LDH level and also effectively elevated the ascorbic acid contents in 25 mg/kg dosage of UDCA. In organ weights. the restraint stress induced increases in spleen and adrenal were attenuated by UDCA in 50 mg/kg dosage. However. stress-induced GOT and GPT levels were unaffected by UDCA.

  • 120 mice of both sexes weighing from 18 to 22 g. were used. These mice were divided nito 12 groups : control (non-restraint and restraint) , acclinmation (non-restraint and restraint , acclimation for 5 and 10 days) , adrenalectomized (non-restraint and restraint0 and acclimation-adrenalectomized (non-restraint and restraint, acclimation for 5 and 10 days) groups. The rectal temperature of each group were measured at 10, 30 and 50 min under environment of $0^{\circ}C$.Measurements were done with a microphrometer of B.T.-32 thermocorpules. The results obtained may be summarized as follows : 1) The rectal temperature in normal mice without restraint was higher than that of normal mice with restraint under environment of $0^{\circ}C$. 2) The rectal temperature in normal mice was higher than that of adrenalectomized mice at 20$^{\circ}$ C. But the rectal temperature in adrenalectomized mice without restraint was higher than that of adrenalectomized mice with restraint under cold-stress. This difference was in the order of 1.65$^{\circ}$ under environment of 20$^{\circ}$ and 10 $^{\circ}$ at 50 min under environment of 0$^{\circ}$. 3) The rectal temperature of normal mice with restraint was less than that of adrenalectomized mice (non-restraint) under cold-stress. 4) The rectal temperature of normal and adrenalectomized mice that acclimated under cold stress ($0^{\circ}C$) for 5 and 10 days was usually higher than that of normal and adrenalectomized mice of non-acclimation under environment of $0^{\circ}C$. 5) The tolerance in mice under cold-stress was increased on the acclimtion of cold.

  • 1. Objective This study was done to identify the anti-stress effect of Hyeongbangdojeok-san (HDS), Yanggyeoksanhwa-tang(YST) in Soyangin. 2. Methods Experimental animals were composed of YST, HDS+stress groups which were administered each by 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg and the Saline+stress group. On the 1st day, making the rats forced swim and on the 2nd day, applying Forced swimming test to the rats. After FST, the levels of Corticosterone in the blood were measured. For the study of learning retardation, memory ability and anxiety reaction, experimental animals were composed of YST, HDS+restraint stress groups which were administered each by 400mg/kg, no stress group and the Saline+restraint stress group. Restraint stress were applied 2 hours a day for 3 weeks. On the last day of the 3rd week, Elevated Plus Maze(EPM) was applied to the groups and Morris Water Maze(MWM) was applied to the groups for 7 days. 3. Results 1. As the results of measuring FST which reflects depression, the YST+stress group and the HDS+stress group showed significant effect in comparison with the Saline+stress group. The levels of Corticosterone in the blood were decreased only in the 400mg/kg YST+stress group. 2. As the results of measuring how long EPM which reflects anxiety reaction stayed in the open arm, there was the trend which can suppress anxiety reaction in the HDS+restraint stress group bur no statistical significance. But there was any suppression of anxiety reaction in the YST+restraint stress group. 3. According to the result of MWM, the saline+restraint stress group showed the learning retardation which means increased time arriving at goal compared to the normal group at the second and third day of measurement. On the contrary, a learning retardation was significantly decreased in the YST+restraint stress group at the third day of measurement. 4. Among the Probe trial test a memory loss occurred in the saline+restraint stress group, but memory ability was significantly increased in the YST+restraint stress group. 4. Conclusion: As the results above, Soyangin Yanggyeoksanhwa-tang has significant influence to the antidepression effect, the learning retardation, the anxiety reaction and also in the Hormone level. Hyeongbangdojeok-san has significant influence to the antidepression effect, in the Hormone level, bur not to the learning retardation and anxiety reaction. prefer to drink cold water, and who are suffering from chronic gastritis.

  • In the current study investigated the protective effects of citrus based mixture drinks (CBMDs) using oxidative stress in human dermal fibroblast (HDF) cells and restraint-stressed rats. The CBMDs contained citrus bioflavonoids including narirutin and hesperidin. The cell viability of HDF cells treated with $H_2O_2$ was observed at 53.9% but treated with CBMD-1 and CBMD-2 ($500{\mu}g/mL$) on $H_2O_2$ exposed HDF cells significantly increased the relative cell viability at 65.0 and 72.2%, respectively. In the treadmill test, the time spent on the electrode plate in the restraint-stressed group was analyzed 24.1 s, but restraint-stressed rats with administered CBMDs (300 mg/kg) had significantly decreased the time at 2.4 (CBMD-1) and 4.7 (CBMD-2) s, respectively. In addition, number of touches the electrode plate in restraint-stressed group was observed at 42.4 ea, but, restraint-stressed rats with administered CBMD-1 and CBMD-2 (300 mg/kg) were significantly decreased at 7.0 and 10.2 ea, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the principal factor controlling transverse residual stress at the weldment for joining unit hull blocks. In order to do it, the comprehensive FE analyses were carried out to evaluate the effect of distance between fillet and butt weldments, in-plane and out-of-plane restraint degree on the amount and distribution of transverse residual stress in way of the weldments between unit hull blocks. In accordance with FEA results, principal factor controlling the amount of transverse residual stress at the weldments was identified as in-plane restraint degree of butt weldment for unit blocks. The effect of other variables on the transverse residual stress was very small relatively. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the proper distance between fillet weldment for stiffener and butt weldment for joining unit blocks should be determined in consideration of in-plane restraint intensity of butt weldments.
