  • The paper investigates the influence of lateral restraint on the buckling behaviour of plate under non-uniform compression. The unloaded edges are assumed to be partially restrained against translation in the plane of the plate and the distributions of the resulting forces acting on the plate are shown. The stability analysis is done numerically using the Galerkin method and various strategies the economize the numerical implementation are presented. Results are obtained showing the variation of the buckling load, from free edge translation to fully restrained, with unloaded edges simply supported, clamped and partially restrained against rotation for various plate aspect ratios and stress gradient coefficients. An apparent decrease in the buckling load is observed due to these destabilizing forces acting in the plate and changes in the buckling modes are observed by increasing the intensity of the lateral restraint. A comparison is made between the budding loads predicted from various formulas in stability standards based on free edge translation and the values derived from the present investigation. A difference of about 34% in the predicted buckling load and different buckling mode were found.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a predictive equation of transverse residual stress at the thick FCA butt weldment of large container vessel. The variables used were restraint degree, yield strength of base material, thickness of weldment and welding heat input. Restraint degree at the thick weldment of container ship having the various welding sequence was calculated using FEA. From the result, the H-type specimen was designed to reproduce the level of restraint degree at the actual weldment of containership. Based on the results, the predictive equations of the mean value and the distribution of transverse residual stress at each location of the weldment were established using dimensional analysis and multiple-regression method. The predictive equations were verified by comparing with those measured by XRD in the actual weldment of the ship.

In order to do it, the variables used for this study were restraint degree, yield strength of base material, thickness of weldment and welding heat input. Here, the level of restraint degree at the thick weldment of container ship having the various welding sequence was calculated using FEA. From the result, the h-type specimen was designed to simulate the level of restraint degree at the actual weldment of containership. With H-type test specimen designed, the effect of the variables on the distribution of transversal residual stress at the weldment in a container ship was evaluated using the comprehensive FEA. Based on the results, the predictive equations of mean value and the distribution of transverse residual stress in each location of residual stress were established using dimensional analysis and multiple-regression method. The validation of predictive equations was verified by comparing with measured results by XRD in the actual weldment of the ship.

  • A mathematical model is developed in this paper to define the interaction between the occupant and vehicle passenger compartment and to predict the occupant dynamic response during a sudden impulse load. Two different types of occupants are considered in this study, child and adult occupants. The occupants are considered as lumped masses connected to the child seat and vehicle's body masses by means of restraint systems. In addition, the occupant restraint characteristics of seat belt and airbag are represented by stiffness and damping elements. To obtain the dynamic response of the occupant, the equations of motion of the occupants during vehicle collisions are developed and analytically solved. The occupant's acceleration and relative displacement are used as injury criteria to interpret the results. It is demonstrated from the numerical simulations that the dynamic response and injury criteria are easily captured and analyzed. It is also shown that the mathematical models are flexible, useful in optimization studies and it can be used at initial design stage.

  • The objective of the present paper is to develop an analysis method for the correction of welding deformation of stiffened plate by line heating. In this paper, the equivalent loading method, based on the inherent strain theory, was used to analyze the heat-straightening of a stiffened plate. Equivalent loads were obtained by integrating the inherent strains which were determined from the highest temperature and the degree of restraint. Finally, the obtained equivalent loads were imposed, as applied loads, on the elastic analysis for the prediction of correction of welding deformation in stiffened plate. The proposed method is expected as a basic study in heat-straightening analysis of welding deformation in large scale block.

  • In this study the pilot test of CGS as injection method by low slump mortar was performed and the results were analyzed in order to find out the application of this method and effect of settlement restraint. The site far pilot test is adjacent to apartments supported by pile foundations. Sand drain method was performed previously as countermeasures against settlement, but settlement occur continuously because this ground is very soft. Site investigations such as SPT, DCPT and vane shear test were performed to determine the characteristics of ground improvement. Field measurements and FDM analysis were performed on purpose to find out the displacement of ground during injection works. From the results of this study, CGS method can be optimized by the control of diagram, space, depth, injection material, and injection pressure. CGS improved soft ground compositely by the bearing effect of CGS columns and reinforcement of adjacent ground. Considering that increase of N value is about 2.1, CGS can be considered as an effective method to increase the bearing capacity as well as to stop the settlement of soft ground. It is also expected to be economic and effective in improvement of ground when it is used in applicable sites.

  • The inelastic buckling behaviour of continuously restrained two and three-span continuous beams subjected to concentrated loads and uniformly distributed loads are studied in this paper. The restraint type considered in this paper is fully restrained against translation and elastic twist applied at the top flange. These types of restraints are most likely experienced in industrial structures, for example steel-concrete composite beams and half through girders. The buckling analysis of continuous beam consists of two parts, firstly the moment and shear distribution along the member are determined by employing force method and the information is then used for an out-of-plane buckling analysis. The finite element method is incorporated with so-called simplified and the polynomial pattern of residual stress. Owing to the inelastic response of the steel, both the in-plane and out-of-plane analysis, which is treated as being uncoupled, extend into the nonlinear range. This paper presents the results of inelastic lateral-torsional and lateral-distortional buckling load and finally conclusions are drawn regarding the web distortion.

  • This paper presents the shear buckling analysis of symmetrically laminated cross-ply plates resting on Pasternak foundation under pure in-plane uniform shear load. The classical laminated plate theory is used for the shear buckling analysis of laminated plates. The Rayleigh-Ritz method with novel plate shape functions is proposed to solve the differential equations and a computer programming is developed to obtain the shear buckling loads. Finally, the effects of the plate aspect ratios, boundary conditions, rotational restraint stiffness, translational restraint stiffness, thickness ratios, modulus ratios and foundation parameters on the shear buckling of the laminated plates are investigated.

  • In this paper, the behavior of plates partially restrained against rotation under stress gradient is investigated. As a first stage, an energy formulation is presented to model this boundary condition and a general expression is derived for the prediction of the elastic buckling of the plate under this general loading condition. The accuracy of the derived expression is compared numerically using the Galerkin method with other available data for the two limiting conditions of rotationally free and clamped boundaries. Results show that the prediction is within a 5% difference. The influence of rotational restraint and stress gradient upon the buckling load and the associated buckling mode is investigated. Numerical results show sensitivity of the buckling mode to the degree of rotational restraint and the variation of the buckling load with the stress gradient.

  • An existing studies concern about movement of pile bridge abutments. However, lateral displacement cause the serious failure of bridge by embankment under soft soil lateral flow A intention is obtained by analyzing the relationship between the safety factor of evaluation for lateral movements. Precise investigation and analysis are performed, in which the lateral movement of bridge abutments has occurred, and construct design strut-slab between bridge abutments in order to restraint lateral flow. As a result of this study, it was found that when evaluation for lateral movements is allowed to use Tschebotarioff's method and lateral flow decision number (I) and revision lateral flow decision number (M$_{I}$) by Korea Highway Corporation. Most important thing is decision of pressure of lateral flow at this case. Tschebotarioff's isoscales triangle method have no trouble analysis of pressure of lateral flow. Strut-slab method are nearly not have constructed case in this field site study that applied method. The method are between abutments combined steel strut and reinforced concrete slab. This method are effective restraint lateral flow but have little difficulty if long span bridge between abutments.s.
