To Investigate the distribution of resting eggs at the intertidal zone, Gomso Bay, samples were taken from the top of the sediments to 10 cm depth at four sites using a cylindrical corer in February, 1997. Additional samples were also taken from one station at subtidal zone to compare the distributions between the inter- and subtidal zones. The resting eggs of few copepods, Acartia pacifica, Centropages abdominalis, Calanopia thompsoni, and Tortanus forcipatus were studied. Mostly, the abundance of the resting eggs in the lower intertidal zone was greater than that in the upper intertidal zone, but was not significantly different from that in the subtidal zone. The abundance of the resting eggs in the intertidal sediments was related with the grain-size and moisture content of sediments. Intertidal sediments are potential egg banks like subtidal sediments.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of vitamin $B_{12}$ addition on the production and hatching rate of resting egg of freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus. Different concentrations of vitamin $B_{12}$ was added into concentrated freshwater Chlorella before fed to rotifer and rotifer was cultured in 250 mL flask. The maximum density of rotifer was 138 inds./mL at 6 ppm and it increased with an increase of vitamin $B_{12}$ addition. Mixis rate and fertilization rate of rotifer were $63.0\%$ and $89.6\%$, respectively, at 6.0 ppm. The production of resting eggs per mL was 231 eggs/mL at 1.5 ppm, but there was no significant difference among vitamin $B_{12}$ addition levels. The highest production of resting eggs per 10,000 rotifers and Chlorella dry weight (g) were 11,289 eggs and 121,252 eggs, respectively, at the 6 ppm. The hatching rate of resting egg was not significantly different among vitamin $B_{12}$ addition levels, but significantly higher than the control (without addition of vitamin $B_{12}$ ). These results showed that vitamin $B_{12}$ addition could affect production and hatching rate of resting egg of freshwater rotifer, B. calyciflorus.

Objective: The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effects of different colors produced by light emitting diode (LED) on Brown Tsaiya ducks. Methods: A total of 144 female Brown Tsaiya ducks were randomly allocated into three individual cage rearing chambers with different LED illumination colors as treatments. Three different treatments were: i) white color, ii) blue color, and iii) red color. The experiment periods were from ducks 21 to 49 weeks of age, determined traits included i) egg laying performance, ii) feed intake, iii) egg shell breaking strength, iv) egg shell thickness, v) egg Haugh unit, vi) egg weight, vii) serum Estradiol and Progesterone concentration, and viii) behavior pattern. Results: The results indicated that when compared with white and blue color, red color could stimulate ducks sexual maturation and raised the egg laying performance. The red light group was also observed to have the highest feed intake among three treatments. The blue treatment had the lowest egg shell breaking strength and the highest egg weight among three treatments, nevertheless, no significant difference was observed among three treatments on egg shell thickness and egg Haugh unit. The red light group had higher serum estradiol concentration than the white and blue groups, but no significant difference among treatments on the serum Progesterone concentration was found. The results of behavior pattern indicated that red light group showed more feeding and less resting behavior compared to the blue light group. Conclusion: We found a potential of applying red light illumination in the indoor laying duck raising system with positive results on egg laying performance and acceptable egg weight, equivalent egg qualities compared to white and blue light.

Spawning behaviors of Squalidus gracilis majimae (Cyprinidae) were observed in the laboratory whose environmental factors such as light (D/L = 16 : 8), temperature ($20\;{\sim}\;24\;^{\circ}C$), and dissolved oxygen (>8 mg $L^{-1}$) were quite regularly controlled. The behavioral patterns were categorized into three stages ofpre-spawning, spawning, and Post-spawning behaviors. In Particular, the pre-spawning stage was specified by 11 specific behavioral patterns of aggressive mating behaviors. During the spawning stage, the male and female performed four distinct spawning behaviors including sexual temptation, stimulation, egg spawning, and the separation, and randomly laid about 200 ${\sim}$ 300 eggs on the bottom substrates through the night. After finishing spawning, two adults separated toward their refuges and showed 3 types of post-spawning behaviors such as the resting, occasional eggs protecting, and the egg eating. The fish was identified as a partial-parental care species after the spawning.
The present study was performed to observe the effects of cations on resting membrane potential and pump activity in the unfertilized eggs of ICR strain mice. After an induction of superovulation, the fresh eggs with zona pellucida were collected and the membrane potentials were recorded. Recordings of membrane potential in this study was obtained from the physiological conditions ($37^{\circ}C$ and 4mM Ca in standard solution), differently from the another reports with unphysiological conditions (room temprature and high Ca in standard solution) for a stable and long-lasting observations. Presented data was obtained within 6 hours after collection from the oviduct. The results observed are as follows, 1) Resting potential of the unfertilized eggs was $-25.8{\pm}3.8mV$$(Mean{\pm}Se,\;n=31)$. 2) As the K ion concentration was increased, resting membrane potential was depolarized but showed hyperpolarization with $K^{+}$ below 25mM. 3) Alteration of the resting membrane potential for the changes of $Na^{+}$ concentration were hardly observed, while resting potential was hyperpolarized as $Ca^{2+}$ concentration was increased. 4) Pump activity as transient or prolonged hyperpolarization was $-2.29{\pm}0.75mV$$(Mean{\pm}Se,\;n=16)$, the hyperpolarization was increased in both amplitude and duration under the 10mM $Ca^{2+}$ solution. 5) Hyperpolarization due to pump activity was decreased or disappeared by $5{\times}10^{-5}\;M$ ouabain treatment and could not be observed under the both Na-free and Ca-free solutions. 6) Above results are likely to suggest that the resting potential of the mouse unfertilized eggs is affected to mainly by Ca-dependent K conductance and Na-Ca exchange mechanism and that there is pump activity coupling between $K{+}$, $Na^{+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$.
The dietary value and fatty acids composition for the hatched neonates from the resting eggs of marine roofers, Brachionus plicatilis and B. rotundiformis were compared with that for mass-cultured rotifers (control) by feeding them to larvae of flounder (Paralichthy olivaceus) and parrot fish (Oplegnathus fasciatus). Resting eggs were mass-produced in $1~4m^3$tanks by feeding Chlorella sp. and baker's yeast. The B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis eggs were preserved at $5^{\circ}C$ in darkness for 3 and 5 months, respectively, and hatched at $28^{\circ}C$ under continuous light. The hatched neonates from the resting eggs and mass-cultured rotifer, which was used as a rontrol were fed to fish larvaes. The growth and survival rates of parrot fish larvae fed on the neonates from the resting eggs of B. rotundiformis were similar to those of fish larvae fed on the control rotifer. And the growth and survival rates of the flounder larvae with neonates from the resting eggs of B. plicatilis were similar or higher than those fed the control rotifer. Also the fatty acids composition of the neonates from the resting eggs of B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis were similar to those from the control rotifers. This results showed that the hatched neonates from resting eggs of rotifer could be used as an effective diet for flounder and parrot fish larvae.
This study was performed to investigate the formation and mass production of resting eggs by freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus as influenced by different aeration supplements and exchange intervals of culture water in 15-L culture vessels and 500 L culture tanks. The maximum densities and mixis rates of the rotifers were not different between experimental group exposed to air or oxygen supplements. However, the fertilization rate and formation of resting eggs of the rotifers in the air-supplemented group were significantly higher than those in the oxygen supplemented group. In the experiment concerning exchange interval of culture water, the maximum density of the rotifers and formation of resting eggs in the batch culture were significantly higher than those in the semi-continuous culture with exchange of water every day. The formation of resting eggs per Chlorella dry weight was highest in the semi-continuous culture with exchange of water every day. The resting eggs of rotifers were produced at a density of $51.8{\sim}57.9{\times}10^6$ eggs in 500-L culture tanks. In this study, the batch culture with air is an effective method for mass production of resting eggs by the freshwater rotifer, B. calyciflorus, and the efficiency of mass production of resting eggs by this rotifer was similar to that of the seawater rotifers, B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis.
In order to manifest the presence of Na-K pump and its property on the unfertilized egg membranes of mouse, membrane potential was recorded under the physiological condition (at $37^{\circ}C$ and 4mM $Ca^{2+}$). After an induction of superovulation, the fresh eggs with zona pellucida were collected from mouse oviduct. Transient hyperpolarization as pump action was recorded after the switch into the high potassium perfusate (15mM $K^+$) from K-free perfusate, and the difference between membrane potential observed just before the perfusion of high potassium solution and the maximal membrane potenlial during the perfusion of high potassium solution was regard as pump activities. The results observed were as follows, 1. Resting mombrane potential was depolarized under the treatment of $10^{-5}M$ ouabain. 2. Pump activities of the unfertilized mouse eggs were $-3.38{\pm}0.61mV$ ($Mean{\pm}SD$, n=6), recorded as transient hyperpolarization due to the electrogenic property. 3. Pump activities were blocked by both treatment of $10^{-5}M$ ouabain and perfusion of Nafree solution, while increased by high $Na^+$ (300mM) perfusion ($-7.45{\pm}0.75mV$, n =2). 4. Hyperpolarization due to pump activity was not altered by $Mn^{2+}$. 5. Above results confirm the presence of ouabain-sensitive Na-K pump, which affected the membrane potential directly, on the unfertilized egg membranes of mouse.
The oviposition behavior of Ooencyrtus kuvanae (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Encyridae) was examined in a small petri dish containing eggs of gypsy moth, Lymantrt'a dt'spar L. The behavioral sequence from initial searching movement toward the host egg through oviposition, departure, and auxiliary phase activities such as resting, glooming, and host feeding were described. Oviposition experience shortened the approach time to subsequent eggs. The time spent for contacting the host egg also decreased with oviposition experience. Oviposition experience may play an important role in host recognition and increasing oviposition efficiency.
Gonadal development, fertilization and egg development in the maternal body and reproductive cycle of ovoviviparous rockfish, Sebastes inermis, were investigated histologically. Gonadosomatic index(GSI) of male and female were increased from September and reached maximum values in December. In the male, GSI decreased from January, but in the female maintained high values till February and decreased from March. Hepatosomatic index(HSI) was related to GSI conversely. In both sex, HSI increased from February and reached maximum in August as the gonad were degenerating and resting, and began to decrease from September as gonad were glowing. This ovoviviparous rockfish copulates in December. Fertilization with sperms maintained between ovulated oocytes in the ovary occurs in January mainly. Egg development in the ovarian cavity and discharging of hatched preiarva occurs from January to February. The reproductive cycle includes the successive stages: Growing(September), Mature (October-November), Ripe and Fertilization(Decembr-Janua), Egg development and Discharging of hatched larva(January-February), Degeneration and Resting(February-August). According to the frequency distribution of egg diameter and histological observation, the ovoviviparous rockfish discharged the prelarva at a time in a spawning season. The sexual maturation is first attained at 2 ages. All females and males reaches first maturity at body length of 17.1cm and 15.1cm respectively. The mean number of the embryos increased with the increase of the total length of female.
