  • Based upon the Floquet theory, the complex modal solution for general rotor systems with periodically time-varying parameters is newly derived. The complete modal response can be obtained from the orthonormality condition between the time-variant eigenvectors and the corresponding adjoint vectors. The harmonic solutions such as the response and directional special a patterns are then derived in terms of harmonic modes whose coefficients are obtained from the modal analysis. The stability analysis by the Floquet's transition matrix and the eigen-analysis is also performed.

  • It is a real-time system that the system correctness depends not only on the correctness of the logical result of the computation but also on the result delivery time. Real-time Operating System (RTOS) is a software that manages the time of a microprocessor to ensure that the most important code runs first so that it is a good building block to design the real-time system. The real-time performance is achieved by using real-time mechanisms through data communication and synchronization of inter-task communication (ITC) between tasks. Therefore, test on the response time of real-time mechanisms is a good measure to predict the performance of real-time systems. This paper aims to analysis the response characteristics of real-time mechanisms in kernel space for real-time embedded Linux: RTAI and Xenomai. The performance evaluations of real-time mechanism depending on the changes of task periods are conducted. Test metrics are jitter of periodic tasks and response time of real-time mechanisms including semaphore, real-time FIFO, Mailbox and Message queue. The periodicity of tasks is relatively consistent for Xenomai but RTAI reveals smaller jitter as an average result. As for real-time mechanisms, semaphore and message transfer mechanism of Xenomai has a superior response to estimate deterministic real-time task execution. But real-time FIFO in RTAI shows faster response. The results are promising to estimate deterministic real-time task execution in implementing real-time systems using real-time embedded Linux.

  • Articulated tower platforms due to its compliant nature are more susceptible to the dynamic effects of wind than conventional fixed platforms. Dynamic response analysis of a double hinged articulated tower excited by low frequency wind forces with random waves is presented in this paper. The exposed super structure of the platform, housing the drilling and production facilities is subjected to mean and fluctuating wind loads, while the submerged portion is acted upon by wind driven waves. The fluctuating component of the wind velocity is modeled by Emil Simiu's spectrum, while the sea state is characterized by Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum. Nonlinearities in the system due to drag force, added mass, variable submergence and instantaneous tower orientation are considered in the analysis. To account for these nonlinearities, an implicit time integration scheme (Newmark's-${\beta}$) has been employed which solves the equation of motion in an iterative fashion and response time histories are obtained. The power spectra obtained from random response time histories show the significance of low frequency responses.

  • Time history analyses have been preferred commonly in earthquake engineering area to determine earthquake performances of structures in recent years. Advances in computer technology and structural analysis have led to common usage of time history analyses. Eurocode 8 allows the use of real earthquake records as an input for linear and nonlinear time history analyses of structures. However, real earthquake records with the desired characteristics sometimes may not be found, for example depending on soil classes, in this case artificial and synthetic earthquake records can be used for seismic analyses rather than real records. Selected earthquake records should be scaled to a code design spectrum to reduce record to record variability in structural responses of considered structures. So, scaling of earthquake records is one of the most important procedures of time history analyses. In this paper, four real earthquake records are scaled to Eurocode 8 design spectrums by using SESCAP (Selection and Scaling Program) based on time domain scaling method and developed by using MATLAB, GUI software, and then scaled and real earthquake records are used for linear time history analyses of a six-storied building. This building is modeled as spatial by SAP2000 software. The objectives of this study are to put basic procedures and criteria of selecting and scaling earthquake records in a nutshell, and to compare the effects of scaled earthquake records on structural response with the effects of real earthquake records on structural response in terms of record to record variability of structural response. Seismic analysis results of building show that record to record variability of structural response caused by scaled earthquake records are fewer than ones caused by real earthquake records.

  • A reflective electronic display that uses negatively and positively charged particles has excellent bistability, a welldefined threshold voltage, and an extremely fast response time in comparison with other reflective displays. This type of display shows images through the movement of charged particles whose motion depends on the value of q/m (charge per mass for a particle). However, the ratio q/m can easily be changed by the forces acting on the charged particles in a cell of the panel and by friction that occurs after mixing oppositely charged particles and in the particle-insertion process. In this study, we propose a method to determine the appropriate range of q/m by using the reflectivity and response time of charged particles to modify q/m. In this manner, the electrical and optical properties of reflective displays are improved.

  • Unburned hydrocarbon is a key contributor to both the fuel economy and emissions of automotive engine. Cyclic variation of HC emission is of importance, especially during throttle transients. The real time measurement of hydrocarbon is particularly important to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms for combustion and emissions, especially during cold start and throttle transient condition. This paper reports the cycle resolved measurement technique of unburned hydrocarbons to quantify rapid changes of in-cylinder concentration in the vicinity of spark plug by using the Fast Response Flame Ionization Detector(FRFID). While this instrument actually measures fuel concentration, its results can be indicative of the AFR behaviour. In order to understand the rapid change of hydrocarbons with cylinder pressure, it is necessary to study the response time delay of the system, including the time associated with gas transportation to FID. And signal from FRFID is correlated with cylinder pressure data to relate changes in mixture preparation to the classic analysis, such as indicated mean effective(IMEF) and ignition delay, etc.

  • In this paper, the wind-induced response of Jiayuguan wooden building (world cultural heritage) in Northwest China was studied. ANSYS finite element software was used to establish four kinds of building models under different working conditions and carry out modal analysis. The simulation results were compared with the field dynamic test results, obtaining the model which reflects the real vibration characteristics of the wooden tower. Time history data of fluctuating wind speed was obtained by MATLAB programming. Time domain method and ANSYS were used to analyze the wind-induced vibration response time history of Jiayuguan wooden building, obtaining the displacement time history curve of the structure. It was suggested that the wind-induced vibration coefficient of Jiayuguan wooden building is 1.76. Through analysis of the performance of the building under equivalent static wind load, the maximum displacement occurs in the three-story wall, gold column and the whole roof area, and the maximum displacement of the building is 5.39 cm. The ratio of the maximum stress value to the allowable value of wood tensile strength is 45 %. The research results can provide reference for the wind resistant design and protection of ancient buildings with similar structure to Jiayuguan wooden tower.

  • Aquifer responses to the river stage fluctuations were analyzed between the groundwater level and the river stage in an alluvial aquifer. The auto-correlation and cross-correlation as a time series analysis were applied. Study site is a floodplain in the Mangyeong river. Groundwater levels in each depth representing the silt and sand(SS), gravel and sand(GS), and weathered zone(WZ) layer were monitored. The groundwater levels were more sensitive to the river stage fluctuations than rainfall. Since the river stages are influenced by the gate operations downstream and tide, show periodic patterns, and the correlation coefficients with rainfall is low. Cross-correlation function between groundwater level in each depth do not show any delay time, then response time is very short to each depth. Cross-correlation analysis were performed to estimate the response time of groundwater levels to river stage fluctuations. Groundwater levels respond to the river stage within 30 minutes to 1 hour in wells near the stream. Short time lag between groundwater level and river stage indicates the quick response. A different response time imply the hydraulic inhomogeneity of the site, and a probable high permeability zone between river and aquifer can be inferred. Mangyeong-river in study site is a gaining stream normally, and river stage rising by gate operation or floods makes river water flow into groundwater. The auto-correlation and cross-correlation functions as a time series analysis can be a good tool to interpret the aquifer responses to stream stage fluctuation

  • A fast response $CO_2$ analyzer has been developed for measuring the $CO_2$ concentration during transient condition of SI engine. The analyzer is based on the non-dispersive infrared absorption technique, electrical chopping system and water cooling system. The analyzer has good repeatability, linearity and permissible drift characteristic. Besides, it has 18ms with a response to measure the $CO_2$ concentration. The fast response $CO_2$ analyzer was applied to single cylinder SI engine and the $CO_2$ emission was examined during engine start. Simultaneously, the standard exhaust gas analyzer, which has slow response time, was used for considering the engine-out $CO_2$ characteristic. The developed analyzer showed much faster responsive characteristic than that of a standard analyzer and made cycle by cycle exhaust gas analysis possible. The transient engine operating characteristics will be estimated and the transient behaviors on engine-out emission and performance will be improved.

  • Transformer is widely used element on power system and industrial area. Especially the transformers installed at power system are exposed to an environment of arbitrary changed. Thus the prediction of degradation and the analysis of response to impulse are important. To conduct those works, the electrical characteristics of system should be analyzed, effectively. But the analysis of electrical characteristic in electric machine level such as pole and pad-mounted transformer is almost no, thus commercial VNA (Vector Network Analyzer) is used to getting the response in wide frequency range. However, the output power of VNA is usually under 10mW, so verification for effectiveness of measuring electrically large component should be conducted, firstly. Next, after getting total S-parameter of transformer, predicting impulse response can be performed in time-domain with circuit simulator. In this paper, it is introduced that verification effectiveness of VNA using transfer function from SFRA (Sweep Frequency Response Analyzer), firstly. Next, total S-parameter, six by six matix form, was built using measured 2 port S-parameter from vector network analyzer. To get the response to impulse which is defined by IEC 60060-1, time-domain simulation is conducted to ADS (Advenced Design System) circuit simulator.
