  • The main objective of this paper is to study the dynamic load allowance (DLA) calculation methods for bridges according to the dynamic response curve. A simply-supported concrete bridge with a smooth road surface was taken as an example. A half-vehicle model was employed to calculate the dynamic response of deflection and bending moment in the mid-span section under different vehicle speeds using the vehicle-bridge coupling method. Firstly, DLAs from the conventional methods and code provisions were analyzed and critically evaluated. Then, two improved computing approaches for DLA were proposed. In the first approach, the maximum dynamic response and its corresponding static response or its corresponding minimum response were selected to calculate DLA. The second approach utilized weighted average method to take account of multi-local DLAs. Finally, the DLAs from two approaches were compared with those from other methods. The results show that DLAs obtained from the proposed approaches are greater than those from the conventional methods, which indicate that the current conventional methods underestimate the dynamic response of the structure. The authors recommend that the weighted average method based on experiments be used to compute DLAs because it can reflect the vehicle's whole impact on the bridge.

  • This paper aims to compare three collocation point methods associated with the odd order stochastic response surface method (SRSM) in a systematical and quantitative way. The SRSM with the Hermite polynomial chaos is briefly introduced first. Then, three collocation point methods, namely the point method, the root method and the without origin method underlying the odd order SRSMs are highlighted. Three examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the three methods. The results indicate that the condition that the Hermite polynomial information matrix evaluated at the collocation points has a full rank should be satisfied to yield reliability results with a sufficient accuracy. The point method and the without origin method are much more efficient than the root method, especially for the reliability problems involving a large number of random variables or requiring complex finite element analysis. The without origin method can also produce sufficiently accurate reliability results in comparison with the point and root methods. Therefore, the origin often used as a collocation point is not absolutely necessary. The odd order SRSMs with the point method and the without origin method are recommended for the reliability analysis due to their computational accuracy and efficiency. The order of SRSM has a significant influence on the results associated with the three collocation point methods. For normal random variables, the SRSM with an order equaling or exceeding the order of a performance function can produce reliability results with a sufficient accuracy. The order of SRSM should significantly exceed the order of the performance function involving strongly non-normal random variables.

  • Hader and Park(l978) suggested the concept of slope-rotatability in axial directions for second order response surface designs. In this paper, the moment conditions for slope-rotatability in axial directions are shown and the measures for evaluating slope-rotatability in axial directions are proposed.

  • The current study is focused on the evaluation of the ultimate strength of stiffened panels found in ship hull structures that are subjected to combined uniaxial thrust, in-plane and out-of-plane bending moments. This loading condition, which is in general ignored when performing buckling checks, applies to representative control geometries (stiffener with attached plating) as a consequence of the linearly varying normal stresses along the ship's depth induced by the hull-girder vertical bending moment. The problem is generalized by introducing a non-uniform thrust described by a displacement ratio and rotation angle and by introducing the slenderness ratios, within the practical range of interest. The formed design space is explored through methods sourcing from Design of Experiments and by applying non-linear finite element procedures. Surrogate empirical models have been constructed through regression analysis and Response Surface Methods. An additional empirical model is provided to the literature for predicting the ultimate strength under uniaxial thrust. The numerical experimentation has shown that is a significant influence on the ultimate strength of stiffened panels as the thrust non-uniformity increases.

  • Wind tunnel testing for flow-through model is necessary for performance prediction of an aircraft with air-breathing jet engine. Internal drag correction and wall correction are performed to acquire preciser wind tunnel test data. Many test runs are generally required to correct internal drag and wall interference in wind tunnel test. In this study we investigated more effective correction schemes using the response surface method. Even though the number of tests required for these schemes was much smaller than that for conventional methods, the differences between corrections using these schemes and conventional methods were similar level with the uncertainty of measurement except for the data near the boundaries.

  • Powder blasting technique has been considered one of the most appropriate micro machining methods for hard and brittle materials, since the productivity is high and the heat layers caused by material removal are very thin. Recent development of special purposed parts, such as the parts for semiconductor processing, the parts for LCD, sensors for micro machine fabrication and so on, has been expanded. Thus, it is essential to develop powder blasting technologies for micromachining of hard and brittle materials such as glass, ceramics and so on. In this paper, the characteristics of powder blasted glass surface were tested under various blasting parameters. Finally, we proposed a predictive model for powder blasting process using the neural network and the response surface method. Detail analysis of the simulation results is carried out and the performance of two predictive models is compared.

  • PURPOSES: This study suggests a specific methodology for the prediction of road surface temperature using vehicular ambient temperature sensors. In addition, four kind of models is developed based on machine learning algorithms. METHODS : Thermal Mapping System is employed to collect road surface and vehicular ambient temperature data on the defined survey route in 2015 and 2016 year, respectively. For modelling, all types of collected temperature data should be classified into response and predictor before applying a machine learning tool such as MATLAB. In this study, collected road surface temperature are considered as response while vehicular ambient temperatures defied as predictor. Through data learning using machine learning tool, models were developed and finally compared predicted and actual temperature based on average absolute error. RESULTS : According to comparison results, model enables to estimate actual road surface temperature variation pattern along the roads very well. Model III is slightly better than the rest of models in terms of estimation performance. CONCLUSIONS : When correlation between response and predictor is high, when plenty of historical data exists, and when a lot of predictors are available, estimation performance of would be much better.

  • The objective of this study was to optimize medium composition of initial pH, tryptone, glucose, yeast extract, and mineral mixture for production of bacteriocin by Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356, using response surface methodology. A response surface approach including new statistical and plotting methods was employed for design and analysis of the experiment. An interiorly augmented central composite design was used as an experimental design. A normal-distribution log-link generalized linear model based on a subset fourth-order polynomial ($R^2$=0.94, Mean Error Deviance=0.0065) was used as an analysis model. This model was statistically superior to the full second-order polynomial-based generalized linear model ($R^2$=0.80, Mean Error Deviance=0.0140). Nonlinear programming determined the optimum composition of the medium as initial pH 6.35, typtone $1.21\%$, glucose $0.9\%$, yeast extract $0.65\%$, and mineral mixture $1.17\%$. A validation experiment confirmed that the optimized medium was comparable to the MRS medium in bacteriocin production, having the advantage of economy and practicality.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to develop a systematic weighting procedure based on process capability indices method applying weighted mean squared error minimization (WMSE) approach to dual response surface optimization. Methods: The proposed procedure consists of 5 steps. Step 1 is to prepare the alternative vectors. Step 2 is to rank the vectors based on process capability indices in a pairwise manner. Step 3 is to transform the pairwise rankings into the inequalities between the corresponding WMSE values. Step 4 is to obtain the weight value by calculating the inequalities. Or, step 5 is to obtain the weight value by minimizing the total violation amount, in case there is no weight value in step 4. Results: The typical 4 process capability indices, namely, $C_p$, $C_{pk}$, $C_{pm}$, $C_{pmk}$ are utilized for the proposed procedure. Conclusion: The proposed procedure can provide a weight value in WMSE based on the objective quality performance criteria, not on the decision maker's subjective judgments or experiences.

  • In this paper, a new method for constrained optimization of noisy functions is proposed. In approximate optimization using response surface methods, if constraints have severe noise, the approximate feasible region defined by approximate constraints is apt to include some of the infeasible region defined by actual constraints. This can cause the approximate optimum to converge into the infeasible region. In the proposed method, the approximate optimization is performed with the approximate constraints shifted by their deviations, which are calculated using a diagonal quadratic response surface method. This can prevent the approximate optimum from converging into the infeasible region. To fit the objective and constraints into diagonal quadratic models, we select the center and 4 additional points along each axis of design variables as experimental points. The deviation of each function is calculated using the differences between the real and approximate function values at the experimental points. A sequential approximate optimization technique based on the trust region algorithm is adopted to manage approximate models. The proposed approach is validated by solving some design problems. The results of the problems show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
