A Gaussian process-based response surface method for structural reliability analysis

  • A first-order moment method (FORM) reliability analysis is commonly used for structural stability analysis. It requires the values and partial derivatives of the performance to function with respect to the random variables for the design. These calculations can be cumbersome when the performance functions are implicit. A Gaussian process (GP)-based response surface is adopted in this study to approximate the limit state function. By using a trained GP model, a large number of values and partial derivatives of the performance functions can be obtained for conventional reliability analysis with a FORM, thereby reducing the number of stability analysis calculations. This dynamic renewed knowledge source can provide great assistance in improving the predictive capacity of GP during the iterative process, particularly from the view of machine learning. An iterative algorithm is therefore proposed to improve the precision of GP approximation around the design point by constantly adding new design points to the initial training set. Examples are provided to illustrate the GP-based response surface for both structural and non-structural reliability analyses. The results show that the proposed approach is applicable to structural reliability analyses that involve implicit performance functions and structural response evaluations that entail time-consuming finite element analyses.

The Tendency of Children's Response on Scientific Evidence Materials (과학적 증거 자료에 대한 아동들의 반응유형 경향성)

  • This study was designed to investigate children's response types, which are always consistent when they meet with different evidence materials. The participants in this study were 119 students of 6th grade in elementary school, who were acquainted with evidence materials presented and able to state logically. Evidence materials were constructed on the main subjects of a cause of the dinosaur extermination and a purpose of the astronomical observatory establishment. The criteria, 'whether or not believe evidence materials presented', 'whether or not believe evidence materials newly presented', 'where or not decrease their belief in the preinstructional evidence materials', and 'whether or not change their belief' were used to classify the type of their responses. So the students' responses to the evidence materials were classified into low types: rejection, reinterpretation, belief decrease, and valuation by evidences. Only about a third of them was also consistent with response types, but the others showed individually different responses to new evidence materials. The types of belief decrease and valuation by evidences were relatively below, while those of the rejection and reinterpretation were likely to represent them again, and these results did not reflect a meaningful difference between male and female. These results show that children's response type are not always coherent, and that they respond variously according to the evidence materials except for an individual cognitive view and a background in estimating evidence materials, and most of them are contents dependent in evaluating evidences. Therefore we are expected to apply it to studies on a thought process of the student as data on the basis of them and develop more various evidence materials responded by basis on evidence.

  • Safety education for crew members is an essential education because it is directly related to life. When ship emergency response training is provided as a hands-on training rather than a sit-down training, the satisfaction of trainees and the educational effect are higher. However, for ship emergency response training to be conducted through practical training, educational conditions such as time and place are insufficient in reality. In recent years, the use of VR technology in education has been in the spotlight. Practicing through virtual reality is an educational method that other educational institutions are also aiming for because it can increase the educational effect regardless of time and place. On the other hand, in order to provide VR-based education, it is essential to develop related technologies and develop contents. In this study, VR-based content development was performed. The development scenario is about navigation and accident response plan, and it was developed for navigation in narrow waterways and limited visibility.

A dominant vibration mode-based scalar ground motion intensity measure for single-layer reticulated domes

  • A suitable ground motion intensity measure (IM) plays a crucial role in the seismic performance assessment of a structure. In this paper, we introduce a scalar IM for use in evaluating the seismic response of single-layer reticulated domes. This IM is defined as the weighted geometric mean of the spectral acceleration ordinates at the periods of the dominant vibration modes of the structure considered, and the modal strain energy ratio of each dominant vibration mode is the corresponding weight. Its applicability and superiority to 11 other existing IMs are firstly investigated in terms of correlation with the nonlinear seismic response, efficiency and sufficiency using the results of incremental dynamic analyses which are performed for a typical single-layer reticulated dome. The hazard computability of this newly proposed IM is also briefly discussed and illustrated. A conclusion is drawn that this dominant vibration mode-based scalar IM has the characteristics of strong correlation, high efficiency, good sufficiency as well as hazard computability, and thereby is appropriate for use in the prediction of seismic response of single-layer reticulated domes.

A Study on the Image for Smoking among the Students (중 . 고등학생의 담배의 이미지에 관한 조사연구)

  • In order to promote an anti-smoking education, we must understand how students imagine about smoking. The author has studied the image for smoking among 856 students in an openended method. The survey was conducted in April and May of 1989. The answers have been grouped into 49 response categories. 79.7% of the categories reflect a negative view of smoking. 34.4 % of the 49 evaluate smoking from a physical viewpoint; 33% from an emotional viewpoint; and 23.9% from an ethical viewpoint. "The most common response is that smoking is "Bad for the health". The next most common responses are "Harmful for people nearby". In order to effectively carry out anti-smoking education for your people, emotional and ethical aspects, as well as physical aspects, should be considered. Other important considerations are sex, grade.derations are sex, grade.

A New Penalty Parameter Update Rule in the Augmented Lagrange Multiplier Method for Dynamic Response Optimization

  • Based on the value of the Lagrange multiplier and the degree of constraint activeness, a new update rule is proposed for penalty parameters of the ALM method. The theoretical exposition of this suggested update rule is presented by using the algorithmic interpretation and the geometric interpretation of the augmented Lagrangian. This interpretation shows that the penalty parameters can effect the performance of the ALM method. Also, it offers a lower limit on the penalty parameters that makes the augmented Lagrangian to be bounded. This lower limit forms the backbone of the proposed update rule. To investigate the numerical performance of the update rule, it is embedded in our ALM based dynamic response optimizer, and the optimizer is applied to solve six typical dynamic response optimization problems. Our optimization results are compared with those obtained by employing three conventional update rules used in the literature, which shows that the suggested update rule is more efficient and more stable than the conventional ones.

Effects of Aromatherapy on Headache, Stress and Immune Response of Students with Tension-Type Headache (향요법이 대학생의 긴장형 두통, 스트레스 및 면역반응에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the effects of aromatherapy on headache, stress and immune response of students with tension-type headache. Method: This study employed a two-group pre-post test study design. Data was collected from 44 subjects. Twenty-two subjects were assigned to the experimental group and received aromatherapy massage every other day for 3 weeks, but the other 22 subjects were in the control group and did not receive any intervention. Experiment had been conducted from Apr. 9 through Aug. 25, 2001 and intensity of headache, stress response (serum cortisol, life stress) and immune response(T-cell and natural killer cell ratio) were measured in the course of aromatherapy for both experimental group and control group. Data were analyzed by using $X^2$-test, t-test, Paired t-test and repeated measures ANOVA. Result: Headache scores, serum cortisol levels and life stress scores were significantly decreased in the experimental group after treatment compared to the control group. Conclusion: These findings is suggested that the aromatherapy could be an effective nursing intervention in relaxing and relieving the pain caused by tension-type headache for students.

1D finite element artificial boundary method for layered half space site response from obliquely incident earthquake

  • Site response analysis is an important topic in earthquake engineering. A time-domain numerical method called as one-dimensional (1D) finite element artificial boundary method is proposed to simulate the homogeneous plane elastic wave propagation in a layered half space subjected to the obliquely incident plane body wave. In this method, an exact artificial boundary condition combining the absorbing boundary condition with the inputting boundary condition is developed to model the wave absorption and input effects of the truncated half space under layer system. The spatially two-dimensional (2D) problem consisting of the layer system with the artificial boundary condition is transformed equivalently into a 1D one along the vertical direction according to Snell's law. The resulting 1D problem is solved by the finite element method with a new explicit time integration algorithm. The 1D finite element artificial boundary method is verified by analyzing two engineering sites in time domain and by comparing with the frequency-domain transfer matrix method with fast Fourier transform.

A study on the Effects of the Lamaze Prophylaxis (산전 Lamaze 교육의 효과에 관한 연구 -영아모의 태도와 모아 상호작용에 미치는 효과-)

  • This study considered the problem of whether the method of Lamaze education changes maternal attitudes toward childrearing, material-infant interaction and is feasible for Korean culture in nineteen mother. infant dyads. Among those mothers, nine were assigned experimental group who received Lamaze education at the period of 7th and 8th month of gestation, and ten were assigned control group who received obstetric routine care. Maternal attitudes were assessed with selected items from Cohler's Maternal Atttiude Scale. Maternal Play Interaction Scale was used during play session to evaluate maternal sensitivity, infant response and mother-infant dyadic synchrony. There were no significant differences not only between the two groups, but also between the period of pre-lamaze education and post-delivery on the Cohler's maternal attitude scale. Experimental mothers and babies scored significantly higher on maternal sensitivity and infant response. But no differences in mother-infant, dyadic synchrony were found. This findings mean that the effect of the lamaza education on the maternal attitudinal change related to be needed the change of cognitive structure is delayed while the effect of that on the maternal infant behavioral response showed immediatly. Modification of Lamaze method is necessary for practical use in our sociocultural system.
