  • The idea of Sustainable, first mentioned in "Our Future (Bruntdland)" from the United Nations report released in 1987 has been highly affect design disciplines in developed countries in 21st century. It relocated industrial society and structure's attentions to nature and recourse conservation and reuse. Designed and manufactured products eventually disposed and it leads to waste of resources as well as creates environmental issues. Unfortunately, vast majority of designers starts designing without anticipation of this matter and produce more believing this leads to more sales. However shorter life of a product will create bigger increase of resource consumption and waste than, importance of re-usage and recycle will eventually increase. In modern furniture industry metal and plastics are frequently used beside wood that material has been diverse than in past. However, there are lack of plans and regulations of re-usage of those material due to difficulties of separating each different materials and collecting due to it's size. This study would like to look into recycling rate, methods and usage of three major materials (wood, metal, plastic) that is typically used in current furniture industries. Furthermore, see the potential of sustainable furniture by analyzing furniture practices made by each different recycled material from old furniture and what designers should consider to achieve feasibility of sustainable furniture.

  • Resources circulation logistics factor has come to be one of the most important concerns in today's business due to the need for conscious use of limited resources and the greenhouse effects. The purpose of this study was to propose strategic approaches to improve firm's competitive advantages by exploring the logistics practices that increase firm's logistics performance and reduce environmental problems at the same time. In doing so, we reviewed past literature on Resources circulation logistics factor, logistics operation level, and firm's logistics Performance, and then developed a conceptual model and researchable hypotheses, Survey data were collected from manufacturing companies to test the hypotheses. Survey data included the variables of Resources circulation logistics factor, logistics operation practices, and firm's performance. Firm's performance was measured by customer service and logistics costs.

  • Recently drastic climate changes(e.g., extreme floods and droughts) are often taking place around the world. Even an increase in uncertainty, population, and mega cities has caused drastic changes in water recycle process. As in other countries, Korea has faced some issues relevant to water security. In response to these changes, Smart Water Grid(SWG) system combining the current water resources management with ICT (Information and Communications Technology) is considered as a new paradigm for the Korean water resources management. This study aims to explore and identify influential factors contributing to the SWG system's application to analyze the importance and role of those factors, and then to offer a policy suggestion for the successful application of the SWG system along with legislative improvements in Korea. In this study, we looked at different barriers related to the SWG application and also the complicated Korean water laws, enacted by different ministries and in order to efficiently apply the SWG system to the current Korean water resources management structures. This study employed qualitative research methods to analyze and identify the priorities of the tasks to be implemented by analyzing conditions for the SWG application, especially related to multi water sources and micro water grid, because legal and institutional measures can be more important to manage conflicts between different stakeholders once the SWG enters a phase of standardization and commercialization from its development stage.

  • Recently, MBT(Mechanical Biological Treatment) facilities were built up and operated to separate and recycle MSW(Municipal Solid Wastes)in South Korea. However, the size distribution of MSW is very rough, and it is causing operation problem because MSW would be crushed in undersize diameter by mechanical equipment before feeding each seperation process. Also, the organic material should be pre-seperated to reuse recycle material in MSW. In this research, the reactor of 1ton/batch using the super-heated steam was tested to present the separation efficiency and the size distribution of MSW by experimental factors.

  • The importance of recycling came to the fore by increasing of waste electrical and electronic equipment(WEEE) generation. Small WEEE recycling in particular represents a big challenge in Korea because it has various items and components. Main materials of small WEEE are typically well known for metals (copper, iron, aluminum, etc.), PCBs and plastics. Not only Korea but also overseas, the laws for small WEEE were in effect in order to recycle effectively, but the technology is not catched up with the regulation which has to recycle an allocated account of WEEE. In addition, recycling technologies and processes for small WEEE are not developed enough to recycling center properly. In that sense, if we develope the recycling process, have not only technology competitiveness but also resource conservation, improving the environment and economic profits. Therefore, through the analysis of economic value of recycled small WEEE, and current technologies both domestically and internationally, we design conceptual recycling process of small WEEE, and consider the way forward.

  • There are few studies on the effects of different sources of PVC scraps generated after the end-of-life PVC products and these scraps are used to prepare PVC products of low quality. In this paper, rigid PVC scraps from different sources such as clothes, pipes, and others were investigated to incorporate into virgin PVC compounds as a part of efforts to recycle various PVC scraps effectively. It was found that the tensile strength and impact strength of the PVC compounds generally decreased with increasing the content of PVC scraps. The impact properties of scrap were in order of CC > PC > RC, tensile strength were PC > CC > RC and Vicat softening temperature shows no specific tendency. CC scraps contents of 50 phr of virgin PVC resin showed 80 %, and PC scrap with 50 phr of virgin resin showed 50% of the mechanical properties with virgin PVC.

  • In recent years, the creation of waste recycling society has been required to cope with the traditional ways of waste treatments. In accordance with the package recycling law in force, calls for the developments of new waste treatment techniques suitable for 21st century are growing higher. A new ash melting furnace system named Eco Burner Ash Melting Furnace System has been developed. It is a burner type ash melting system in which the fluffs made of the plastics segregated from municipal solid wastes are directly fired at high temperature in the furnace. This system provides an economical ash melting system because plastic wastes or paper scraps that have heretofore been considered hard to recycle are used in compensation for fossil fuel. In this paper, we describe the ash melting test results obtained from a substantiative facility.

  • Remanufacturing is an industrial manufacturing process. The merits of remanufacturing are to reuse old products to perform like a new product and to save energy, natural resources, landfill space and to reduce air pollution by less re-smelting. This paper proposes a systemic approach for activating the domestic remanufacturing industry. The approach is based on inside and outside regulations to apply remanufacturing companies. And, we analyzed the state and problems of remanufacturing industry for automobile parts. Also 5 essential tactics and 20 detail strategies are suggested. On the basis of the approach, the domestic remanufacturing industry will carry out the cooperation for their competitions.

  • Using the abandoned agricultural by-product corncobs, the most commonly used methylene blue (MB) dyestuffs were removed. This experiment is very meaningful because it is the recycling of resources and the use of environmentally friendly adsorbents. According to the Hauser ratio and porosity analysis, the corncob has a good flow ability of the adsorbent material and many pores, which is very advantageous for MB adsorption. As a result of the experiment, MB concentration of less than 0.005 g/L was very efficiently removed with 10 g/L of bioadsorbent corncob and the maximum adsorption capacity of corncob for MB dyes was obtained at 417.1 mg/g. In addition, adsorption process of MB onto corncob was a physical process according to adsorption energy analysis. Corncob can efficiently and environmentally remove MB in aqueous solution, and is very cost effective and can recycle the abandoned resources.
