  • Purpose: This study discusses the phenomenon of the uncertain sustainability of SMEs in developing countries. SMEs face various challenges in the dynamics of a competitive environment, which threaten their growth and sustainability. This study aims to address a research gap between company's internal resources, in the form of absorptive capacity, and its business performance. By using product quality as a mediator, which has never been studied before, this research presents a novelty to answer the existing research gap using the Resource Based Theory (RBT) perspective. Research design, data and methodology: Using quantitative method, data are collected from 164 respondents, who are owners or managers of furniture manufacturing SMEs in Gerbangkertosusila Area, East Java, Indonesia. The data are analyzed using Partial Least Square (PLS) - Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Results: The findings show that absorptive capacity has a direct and significant effect on business performance and indirectly through product quality. Conclusion: Furniture manufacturing SMEs are advised to focus on developing absorptive capacity reflected in good product quality, in order to improve their business performance. This is especially important to survive the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Thus, the results of this study contribute to the development of RBT, and there are several suggestions for further research.

The present research adopts resource based theory (RBT) to explore the relationships between a firm's specific capability and its performance and employs structural equation modelling (SEM) in order to test the validation of the measurement models and examine the relationships between construct variables. The current empirical test was conducted using the data collected from logistics managers of 101 Korean electronics companies. The empirical research presents positive influential relationships between (1) information/planning formality capability and strategic planning capability; (2) strategic planning capability and logistics performance; (3) logistics performance and competitive advantage; and (4) competitive advantage and competitive position in the market.

  • This study aims to review the competitiveness of 'TVING', a Korean OTT player in Korean market. For this, this study extracts core business resources of TVING focusing on resource-based theory, and analyzes their competitiveness under VRIO framework. TVING has 4 tangible and intangible resources respectively and 1 human resource. Tangible resources of TVING are technology(recommendation, compression), content(original, exclusive, discriminative non-exclusive), production studio, and paid-subscribers. Intangible resources are content planing capability, distribution network(local, global), marketing promotion·PR, sales), brand preference. And human resource of TVING creates IP professionalism of the company. As a result of VRIO analysis, discriminative non-exclusive content, production studios, and domestic service channels are the most powerful resources of TVING to 'sustain competitive advantage'. Technology, original content, planning capability and IT professionalism bring 'temporary competitive advantage', while exclusive content, the number of paid-subscribers, global service network, and promotion capabilities are not core resources with staying in competitive rank stages. By the way, TVING has potential users for sales of KT and LGU+ thanks to partnership and M&A, but this is not effectively used at the organization level yet. The meaning of this study can be found in that this evaluated competitiveness by each resource of TVING and arranged its implications.

  • Purpose: The current research investigates the beneficial impacts of supply chain innovation and risk management on the competitive advantage of organizations, based on the resource-based theory (RBT) framework. Research Design, Data, and Methodology: 14 survey items were included in the study's questionnaire, utilizing a random sampling technique to gather data from 239 leaders and managers employed by various steel trading firms in Vietnam. In order to validate the data and examine relationships, the collected data is analyzed using structural equation modeling, confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability analysis via SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 22.0 software. A fictitious system has been suggested. Results: According to the findings, the most positive influence on competitive advantage is supply chain innovation, followed by risk management capability, having the second greatest positive influence. Conclusions: Some conclusions are drawn based on the research's findings in order to assist managers in realizing the significance and necessity of giving attention to supply chain innovation and improving risk management capabilities, both of which are essential components for achieving the competitive advantage of an organization.

  • Industrial revolution 4.0 makes business competition more challenging and will impact the instability of the company's financial performance. Dynamic environmental conditions make it difficult for companies to make predictions in making decisions. Investing in information technology (IT) is one way for companies to maintain financial stability and competitive advantage in dynamic competition. Resource-Based Theory (RBT) explains that information technology (IT) is a resource that can create a competitive advantage for the company. This study aims to examine the moderating role of dynamic industrial environments and IT strategic emphasis on the relationship between a lag effect of IT investment and firm's financial performance volatility. Using the data of companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) for five years starting from 2013-2017, the method used to estimate the research model's parameters is the generalized method of moments (GMM) approach. The results show that the industrial environment and the emphasis on IT strategy have a role in moderating and strengthening the relationship between the time lag in IT investment in reducing the firm's financial performance volatility.
