Recently, indirect evidences suggest that Na-Ca exchange mechanism is involved in bone resorption. To study this suggestion, effects of several drugs which increase the intracellular sodium concentration by different mechanisms on the PTH-induced bone resorption were analysed employing organ culture. Ulnae and radii were removed from 19-day fetal rats, prelabelled by subcutaneous injection of $200{\mu}\;Ci^{45}CaC1_2$ on the 17th day of gestation, and then explanted on the membrane filters in organ culture dishes. For studying the effects of amiloride, ouabain, monensin, and veratridine on the PTH-induced bone resorption, control group was cultured in BGJb media containing PTH (0.4U/ml) while experimental group was cultured in BGJb media containing PTH and drugs. The effects of drugs on the PTH-induced bone resorption were observed by the ratios of $\%-release$ of $^{45}Ca$ between paired control and experimental groups. The results were as follows: 1. $^{45}Ca$ release was significantly increased by PTH (0.4U/ml) at 48 and 72 hours of culture. 2. Amiloride, at concentration of $500{\mu}M$, significantly inhibited the PTH-induced bone resorption after 48 and 72 hours of culture. 3. Ouabain, at concentration of 0.1 mM, presented significant inhibition of PTH-induced bone resorption after 48 and 72 hours of culture, and at 0.5mM and 1mM, presented significant inhibition of PTH-induced bone resorption after 72 hours of culture. 4. Monensin, at concentration of 500nM, significantly inhibited PTH-induced bone resorption after 72 hours of culture. 5. Veratridine, at concentration of 0.5mM, presented significant inhibition of PTH-induced bone resorption after 48 and 72 hours of culture, and at 1mM, presented significant inhibition of PTH-induced bone resorption after 72 hours of culture. Taken altogether, these results suggest that Na-Ca exchange mechanism play a role in PTH-induced bone resolution.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the root resorption and repair pattern of human teeth under intrusive orthodontic loadings of varying magnitude and duration. 50 gms, 100 gms, 200 gms of force applied to the 96 experimental teeth with duration of 2, 5, 7, 10 weeks, after removing the arch wire and retaining during 2 and 6 weeks, experimental teeth were extracted. Results were as follows: 1. The initial resorption site was visible in the apex within 2 weeks with 50 gms, 100 gms samples. 2. The sites of resorption increased markedly with duration of the force. 3. The 50 grams samples of the all duration reveal the shallow resorption and the 100 gms samples of the all duration except 2 weeks reveal the shallow and deep resorption sites. 4. After 7 weeks with 50 gms and 100 gms, cellular cementum repair accompanied the continuing resorption. 5. 2 and 6 weeks after removing the force with 200 gms, the same cellular cementum repair accompanied with 50 gms, 100 gms samples.
The author had performed the measurement of the various teeth regions on 200 cases of Full-mouth roentgenogram taken with the measurable Grid to detect the degree of alveolar bone resorption, aged from 20 to 60 years of Korean, and to verify the effective result of measurable Grid as a new device which enables the observers to determine the correct length of images on the periapical standard film. The results were obtained as follows. 1. It was found that the degrees of alveolar bone resorption were different in the various teeth regions. 2. As a whole, alvolar bone resorption of anterior teeth regions was more severe than that of posterior teeth regions. 3. Alveolar bone resorption of mandibular region was more severe than that of maxillary region. 4. In sex difference, alveolar bone resorption of male is more severe than that of female, and it was increased with aging. 5. Measurable grid can be used as an adjunct of evaluation of alveolar bone resorption and of calculating the tooth length.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between incisor root resolution and sex, age, extraction, the magnitude and direction of tooth movement. The sample consisted of 189 randomly selected orthodontic patients, receiving standard edgewise orthodontic treatment in three private orthodontic onces at San Francisco. Pre-treatment and post-treatment periapicals and cephalometric radiographs were digitized. Measurements and superimpositions were made utilizing a computerized cephalometric analysis program. The variables were statistically analyzed. The results were as follows: 1. Mean apical root resorption values were $0.77{\pm}2.08mm$ for upper right central incisor, $0.88{\pm}2.11mm$ for upper left central incisor, $-0.05{\pm}2.09mm$ for lower right central incisor and $0.11{\pm}1.85mm$ for lower left central incisor. Apical root resorption of upper incisor was greater than lowers. 2. No correlation was found between sex and apical root resorption. 3. Apical root resorptions in adolescents were smaller than those in adults. 4. Apical root resorption was not affected by extraction. 5. Apical root resorption values of upper incisor were correlated to the horizontal and vertical movement of apex; Apical root resorption values of lower incisor were correlated to the vertical movement of apex.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the patient- and treatment-related etiologic factors of external root resorption. Materials and Methods : This study consisted of 163 patients who had completed orthodontic treatments and taken the pre- and post-treatment panoramic and lateral cephalometric radiographs. The length of tooth was measured from the tooth apex to the incisal edge or cusp tip on the panoramic radiograph. Overbite and overjet were measured from the pre- and post-treatment lateral cephalometric radiographs. The root resorption of each tooth and the factors of malocclusion were analyzed with an analysis of variance. A paired t test was performed to compare the mean amount of root resorption between male and female, between extraction and non-extraction cases, and between surgery and non-surgery groups. Correlation coefficients were measured to assess the relationship between the amount of root resorption and the age in which the orthodontic treatment started, the degree of changes in overbite and overjet, and the duration of treatment. Results : Maxillary central incisor was the most resorbed tooth, followed by the maxillary lateral incisor, the mandibular central incisor, and the mandibular lateral incisor. The history of tooth extraction was significantly associated with the root resorption. The duration of orthodontic treatment was positively correlated with the amount of root resorption. Conclusion : These findings show that orthodontic treatment should be carefully performed in patients who need the treatment for a long period and with a pre-treatment extraction of teeth.
Replacement resorption is followed by the delayed replantation of an avulsed tooth. Currently no effective treatment is substantiated for replacement resorption. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of stannous fluoride, bisphosphonate (etidronate disodium) and gallium nitrate, which have been shown to reduce dentin resorption, on human dentin. Osteoclasts were collected from tibeas of chick embryo. The cells were well agitated to prevent adhesion and seeded onto the sliced human dentin wafers which had been soaked in either culture media (control), or several different concentrations of stannous fluoride, etidronate disodium (l-hydroxyethylidene -1,1-bisphosphonate disodium), and gallium nitrate. Resorption was measured by counting the number of resorptive pit produced by the cells. Results are as follows. Stannous fluoride and etidronate disodium showed statistically significant reduction of dentin resorption(p<0.05) but the effect of stannous fluoride seemed to be its high cytotoxicity. Etidronate disodium did not show cytotoxicities in all experimented concentrations. Gallium nitrate did not show differences in resorption either between different concentrations or from the control group.

Purpose : This study is to predict the changes of the distal segment by investing the resorption of the excessive distal segment regarding the amount of setback after BSSRO. Material and Methods : 20 patients with Mandible prognathism treated by Obwegeser-Dal Pont method during the years 2000 to 2002 were selected for this study. Group A consisted of 5 males & 5 females with a setback amount of 10mm and above(Mean $10.80mm{\pm}1.03$, n=20) and Group B consisted of 2 males & 8 females with a setback amount of below 10mm.(Mean $6.10mm{\pm}1.10$, n=20) Panorama X-ray was taken at day 1, 1month, 3months, 6months, and 12months after the surgery. Resorption areas of excessive distal segment were measured on these panorama X-rays and compared. Results : There was bone resorption in both groups. Group A showed more bone resorption than Group B. Group B showed slightly higher resorption rate than Group A. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the resorption rates of Group A and Group B. (P>0.05). Conclusion : More bone resorption occurred with a larger amount of setback and about one third of the excessive distal segment underwent resorption, irrespective of the amount of setback.

Purpose: This study presents radiographic and laboratory analysis and comparison of bone resorption rate of grafted endochondral bone and intramembranous bone on the aspect of height and volumetric change. Patients and Methods: 18 partially edentulous patients who needed alveolar ridge augmentation for implant placement during the years 2002 to 2004 were selected for this study. Group A consisted of 5 males & 3 females who were treated with intraoral(intramembranous) bone and Group B consisted of 8 males & 2 females who were treated with iliac(endochondral) bone. Non-standard periapical X-ray was taken at day 1, 2 month, 4 months, 8 months after the surgery. Resorption rate of grafted bone were measured on these X-rays and compared. Also we calculated volume of grafted bone with models which was fabricated at 1.5 months, 6 months. Results: There was bone resorption in both groups. Group B showed more bone resorption than Group A. In Group A, the resorption rate according to the radiographic measurements was 9.81 %, and resorption rate according to volumetric measurement was 16.5 %. In group B, the resorption rate according to the radiographic measurements was 15.9 %, and resorption rate according to volumetric measurement was 30.6 %. Significant difference is on radiographic resorption of post-op 2, 4, 8 months on two groups (P < 0.05). Also significant difference is on volume resorption on two groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: We found that more bone resorption occurred with iliac(endochondral) bone and when we use intraoral bone, that bone can maintain their vitality for alveolar ridge augmentation.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the resorption potential in human permanent teeth by analyzing the frequency and the degree of root resorption as revealed by routine intraoral roentgenograms. The following conclusions were obtained: 1) The distribution of root resorptions was as follows; a) 65.3 per cent were no root resorption. b) 7.0 per cent showed questionable root shortening. c) 25.2 per cent were definite root shortening. d) 2.5 per cent showed very severe resorption. 2) The order of susceptibility of teeth to resorption in this study was consistent with other studies. 3) The maxillary teeth showed a much higher incidence (52.2 per cent) than the mandibular teeth (17.1 per cent) 4) The sex ratio of the sample in this study was 1.3 female to 1 male.
Completely avulsed tooth caused by a traumatic injury needs replantation for treatment choice. But, replantated tooth usually comes with inflammatory root resorption, replacement resorption and ankylosis, moreover ankylosis cause severe functional and esthetic problems. The outcome of replantated tooth depends on the following factors; minimal damage to pulp and periodontal tissue, the length of extraoral time, the medium of the tooth stored, the level of root formation and so on. The purpose of this case report is to describe the variable resorption pattern and to discuss types that influence the occurrence of resorption.
