  • This paper presents a robust optimal design method for a periodic structure type of MEMS resonator that is vulnerable to mode localization. The robust configuration of such a MEMS resonator to fabrication error is implemented by changing the regularity of periodic structure For the mathematical convenience, the MEMS resonator is first modeled as a multi-pendulum system. The index representing the measure of mode variation is then introduced using the perturbation method and the concept of modal assurance criterion. Finally, the optimal intentional mistuning, minimizing the expectation of the irregularity measure for each substructure, is determined for the normal distributed fabrication error and its robustness in the design of MEMS resonator to the fabrication error is demonstrated with numerical examples.

  • This paper predicted nonlinear dynamic responses of a cantilevered carbon nanotube(CNT) resonator incorporating the electrostatic forces and van der Waals interactions between the CNT cantilever and ground plane. The structural model of CNT includes geometric and inertial nonlinearities to investigate various phenomena of nonlinear responses of the CNT due to the electrostatic excitation. In order to solve this problem, we used Galerkin's approximation and the numerical integration techniques. As a result, the CNT nano-resonator shows the softening effect through saddle-node bifurcation near primary resonance frequency with increasing the applied AC and DC voltages. Also we can predict nonlinear secondary resonances such as superharmonic and subharmonic resonances. The superharmonic resonance of the nano-resonator is influenced by applied AC voltage. The period-doubling bifurcation leads to the subharmonic resonance which occurs when the nano-resonator is actuated by electrostatic forces as parametric excitation.

  • A new active resonator using defected ground structure with islands (DGSI) is proposed. The proposed resonator is composed of the conventional microstrip line with DGSI and negative resistance of active devices. The negative resistance part is realized by field effect transistor (FET) series feedback circuits. The characteristic of the proposed resonator with DGSI is improved by combining the negative resistance part with the parallel microstrip line structure with islands, where the electric field is formed the most strongly. The measured improvement of the proposed active resonator with DGSI are 4.55dB and 0.32dB in S21 and S22, respectively, at the resonant frequency whorl it is compared to the existing passive resonator having DGSI only.

  • This paper describes the modeling and experimental results for Bulk Acoustic Wave(BAW) Resonator using PolyVinyliDene Fluoride(PVDF). We measured the input reflection coefficient ($S_{11}$) of resonators using vector network analyzer and experimental results were measured fundamental resonance at 2.3 GHz with a return loss of -29 dB. Because of fabricated resonator without etching process, we can confirm a possibility of resonator application as using a PVDF.

  • This paper demonstrates a new radio frequency (RF) resonator at 3 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. An approach based on a split ring resonator (SRR) having effective metamaterial properties is investigated. Electromagnetic simulation results are compared for RF resonators and discussed in detail at 3 T. A new RF resonator has approximately 10% higher magnetic fields at the center of the human phantom than the previous RF resonator.

  • We propose and experimentally demonstrate a ring resonator with sharp U-turns fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate; the resonator was designed as a key part of an optical, dynamic data storage device. We discuss the optical properties of the fabricated ring resonator from the viewpoint of equi-frequency-contour behavior in a dispersion space. We successfully characterize its optical characteristics on the basis of photonic crystal physics. It is suggested that the photonic ring resonator will be applicable to optical, dynamic memory devices for optical communication systems.

  • The resonant frequency of a gas-filled cylindrical Helmholtz resonator in a liquid is obtained analytically. The equation of motion of the resonator is derived by using the condition of equilibrium of forces acting on the mass in the neck of the resonator. The reaction force on the upper side of the cylinder due to the acceleration of external fluid and sound radiation is obtained by using the analytical results for the baffled circular-piston problem. From the frequency response function of the resonator, a formula to predict the resonant frequency of the resonator is derived. It is shown that the resonant frequency of the Helmholtz resonator significantly decreases due to the cushioning effect of gas inside the cavity. Therefore, when a pressure transducer is to be installed in a pin-hole type mounting method, much care should be paid to remove the gas from the cavity.

  • Helmholtz resonator is widely used acoustic instrument which has high absorption characteristics at its resonance frequency. Particularly it maintains good performance even in the low frequency region that is difficult to control by general porous absorptive materials. However, under severely high sound pressure level, the absorption characteristics are changed by increase of resistance due to nonlinear behavior of neck impedance. Because of this nonlinear behavior, it is difficult to obtain the expected absorption performance under high sound pressure environment. Thus, in order to prevent excessive rise of resistance, the resonator with neck having cross section dimension decrease away from the entry of the resonator cavity could be suggested. This paper introduces the experiment method and results about nonlinear characteristics of Helmholtz resonator with tapered neck and proposes the approximate nonlinear impedance model.

  • Classical method calculates the resonance frequency of Helmholtz resonator by postulating that there is a moving mass in neck and a stiffness which expresses the compressibility of cavity. This has been widely accepted as reasonable to determine the resonant frequency, provided that the wave length of interest is longer that any length scale of resonater. Nevertheless, it has been often recognized that this classical method sometimes does not well predict the resonant frequency. This paper decribes the way in which the dynamics of resonator very often does care about the detail geometries of resonator; location of the neck, diameter ratio of the neck to that of cavitty, length of resonator compared with that of neck, etc. This rather unexpected observations have been proved theoretically; 3 dimensional analysis of acoustic wave equation, as well as experimentally by comparing the resonant frequencies, transmission loss, and insertion loss of resonator.

  • In this paper, a novel notch resonator is proposed based on Rectangular Split Ring Resonator (RRSS) element. We represented the electrical characteristics for R-SRR elements coupled with microstrip line, and measured result is compared with electromagnetic simulation (HFSS) result. We also solved equivalent circuit for R-SRR element, and also discussed influences of change structural parameters of R-SRR. The size of R-SRR is the most important parameters for frequency tuning. Also we can make tunable resonator form the basic structure. This novel resonator can apply to design of tunable bandpass filter and voltage control oscillator.
