  • The sub-resonance modes can be easily excited by the assembling tolerance in the asymmetric type optical pick-up actuators, compared with the symmetric type. In this paper, we propose the novel method for reducing the vibration due to the sub-resonance modes where undesirable modes can be decreased by adding the damping, which can be achieved by increasing the flexibility of holder PCB, against to the sub-resonance modes. Using the finite element method, the change of mode shapes is investigated as the shape of holder PCB is modified. Experimental results support that the proposed method reduces remarkably the vibration of sub-resonance modes of the optical pick-up actuator.

  • Two kinds of experimental modal analyses have been performed on a radial tire for passenger car under fixed axle. One is the modal analysis to obtain three-dimensional modes of tire using accelerometers and the other is the one to identify cavity resonance frequency using a pressure sensor. From the first analysis, we have obtained three-dimensional natural modes and their decomposed 3-D modes in each direction, which make it possible to grasp the features of the modes that cannot be identified in the conventional 2-D modes and to classify the vibrationall modes into symmetric, non-symmetric, and antisymmetric modes in a simple way by using the experimental results. From the second experimental analysis, the cavity resonance frequency is found. Coomparing the results of the two analyses, we have Identified the three-dimensional mode of the cavity resonance. We also haute shown that natural frequencies of structural vibration depends on inflation Pressure while the cavity resonance does not.

  • This study conducted a 3D thermo-acoustic analysis based on the helmholtz solver to analyze the major resonance modes causing combustion instability in a single-can combustor. The experimental investigations were carried out on a test rig designed by the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM) under various conditions of hydrogen co-firing and fuel staging. Through these experiments, two primary unstable frequencies were identified. To determine the resonance modes of these frequencies, a 3D thermo-acoustic analysis was conducted using temperature information from the test rig. The results confirmed that the unstable frequencies observed in the experiments were all longitudinal modes. Additionally, the mode shapes identified in the analysis facilitated a simplification of the exit geometry for the low-order network model, confirming that this did not significantly affect the fundamental resonance modes.

  • Noise reduction has become a major issue of the manufacturing industry. This paper describes the reduction of noise and vibration of rotary compressors. Empirical design for the present strap of the accumulator has been considered to be sufficient for the constraint of the accumulator resonance modes without thorough study. Recently, however, some researchers found out that the accumulator contributes considerably to the sound propagation. In this paper, the contribution of accumulator to the noise propagation is investigated through sound measuring experiments by checking the directivity of the noise. And, experimental modal analysis results show that frequencies of some resonance modes of the accumulator coincide with the highest peaks on sound spectrum. To demonstrate the reason for those resonance modes, a finite element analysis is conducted. Normal mode analysis of the finite element model of the rotary compressor shows the mechanism of the accumulator resonance modes.

  • Transducer for ultrasonic linear motor with the symmetric and anti-symmetric modes was studied. The ultrasonic linear motor consists of two Langevin type piezoelectric vibrators that cross at right angles with each other in tip. In order to excite symmetric and anti-symmetric resonance modes, the transducer must have a phase shift of 90 degree in space and time. Therefore, the tip of transducer moves on an elliptical motion. In this paper, the finite element analysis was used to optimize dimension and displacement of the transducer. The ultrasonic motor was fabricated using the simulated result and the driving characteristics were measured. No-load velocity was 0.28[m/s] and the maximum efficiency was 30[%] in resonance frequency.

  • The resonance characteristics of H-shaped metamaterials, whose widths were varied while keeping the height constant, were investigated in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. The H-shaped metamaterials were numerically analyzed in two modes in which the polarization of the incident THz electric field was either parallel or perpendicular to the width of the H-shaped structure. The resonant frequency of the metamaterial changed stably in each mode, even if only the width of the H shape was changed. The resonant frequency of the metamaterial operating in the two modes increases without significant difference regardless of the polarization of the incident electromagnetic wave as the width of the H-shaped metamaterial increases. The electric field distribution and the surface current density induced in the metamaterial in the two modes were numerically analyzed by varying the structure ratio of the metamaterial. The numerical analysis clearly revealed the cause of the change in the resonance characteristics as the width of the H-shaped metamaterial changed. The efficacy of the numerical analysis was verified experimentally using the THz-TDS (time-domain spectroscopy) system. The experimental results are consistent with the simulations, clearly demonstrating the meaningfulness of the numerical analysis of the metamaterial. The analyzed resonance properties of the H-shaped metamaterial in the THz frequency range can be applied for designing THz-tunable metamaterials and improving the sensitivity of THz sensors.

  • The effects of acoustic resonance and volute geometry on phase resonance are studied theoretically and experimentally using a centrifugal fan. One dimensional theoretical model is developed taking account of the reflection from the discharge pipe end. It was found that the phase resonance occurs, even with the effects of acoustic resonance, when the rotational speed of rotor-stator interaction pattern agrees with the sound velocity. This was confirmed by experiments with and without a silencer at the discharge pipe exit. The pressure wave measurements showed that there are certain effects of the cross-sectional area change of the volute which is neglected in the one dimensional model. To clarify the effects of area change, experiments were carried out by using a ring volute with a constant area. It was demonstrated that the phase resonance occurs for both interaction modes travelling towards/away from the volute. The amplitude of travelling wave grows towards the volute exit for the modes rotating towards the volute exit, in the same direction as the impeller. However, a standing wave is developed in the volute for the modes rotating away from the volute exit in the opposite direction as the impeller, as a result of the interaction of a growing wave while travelling towards the tongue and a reflected wave away from the tongue.

  • In this paper, the response characteristics of one to one resonance on the rectangular cantilever beam in which basic harmonic excitations are applied by nonlinear coupled differential integral equations are studied. This equations have 3-dimensional non-linearity of nonlinear inertia and nonlinear curvature. Galerkin and multi scale methods are used for theoretical approach to one to one internal resonance. Nonlinear response characteristics of 1st, 2nd, 3rd modes are measured from the experiment for basic harmonic excitation. From the experimental result, geometrical terms of nonlinearity display light spring effect and these terms play an important role in the response characteristics of low frequency modes. Dynamic behaviors in the out of plane are also studied.
