  • Results of EGS4 based calculations to study the spatial resolution of gas detectors are described. The calculations include radial distribution of electrons generated by photons of various energies penetrating into variable thickness of Ar and Xe gas layers. Given a desired spatial resolution, the maximum allowed thickness of gas layer for each energy level is determined. In order to obtain 0.1mm spatial resolution, the maximum thickness for the Ar gas is found to be 2mm for photon energies below 14keV while the optimum energy of photons for Xe gas with the same thickness is about 45keV. The results of calculations performed to compare the number of electrons generated by CsI coated micro-channel plate and the number of electrons generated by the Ar and Xe gas layers are described. The results show that the number of electrons generated by the gases is about 10 times higher than the one generated by CsI coated micro-channel plate. A few sample gray scale images generated by these calculations are included.

  • For the performance improvement of a time-to-digital converter(TDC), a 2-stage high resolution TDC has been designed by using a 2-stage vernier time amplifier(2-S VTA). The two stage vernier time amplifier which has a gain over 64 of the resolution can enhance the resolution of the whole two stage TDC. Because of using a vernier TDC, the structure is not limited to advanced processes for achieving high resolution. The proposed TDC has been designed in a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process and simulated with a 1.8V supply voltage. The entire input range is 512ps, and the full resolution 0.125ps.

  • In Computed Tomography, abdominal examination showed the highest proportion of use, and effort of reducing the radiation dose is required. Recently introduced Iterative Reconstruction(IR) is repetitive reconstruction technique of Computed Tomography. SIEMENS' IR, ADMIRE and GE's IR, ASIR-V, were used in this examination. Noise, % Contrast, and High contrast resolution were measured by using ACR phantom for image quality evaluation. In addition, CTDIvol and DLP displayed in the CT device were used for dose evaluation. When FBP and IR were compared, stage 2 to stage 5 of ADMIRE and 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90% of ASIR-V were applied, noise could be reduced from a minimum of 0.46 to a maximum of 2.38 in ADMIRE compared to FBP, and noise from a minimum of 0.51 to a maximum of 2.5 in ASIR-V compared to FBP. Also, % Contrast and High contrast resolution of FBP and IR were no statistical difference. When IR was used for abdominal CT examination, the radiation dose of ADMIRE is reduced by 25.39% compared to the radiation dose of FBP. Also, the radiation dose of ASIR-V is reduced by 16.61% compared to the radiation dose of FBP. In conclusion, it is believed that if IR is applied during abdominal CT examination, the radiation dose can be reduced without deteriorating the image quality.

  • A lead slowing down spectrometer (LSDS) is under development for analysis of isotopic fissile material contents in pyro-processed material, or spent fuel. Many current commercial fissile assay technologies have a limitation in accurate and direct assay of fissile content. However, LSDS is very sensitive in distinguishing fissile fission signals from each isotope. A neutron spectrum analysis was conducted in the spectrometer and the energy resolution was investigated from 0.1eV to 100keV. The spectrum was well shaped in the slowing down energy. The resolution was enough to obtain each fissile from 0.2eV to 1keV. The detector existence in the lead will disturb the source neutron spectrum. It causes a change in resolution and peak amplitude. The intense source neutron production was designed for ~E12 n's/sec to overcome spent fuel background. The detection sensitivity of U238 and Th232 fission chamber was investigated. The first and second layer detectors increase detection efficiency. Thorium also has a threshold property to detect the fast fission neutrons from fissile fission. However, the detection of Th232 is about 76% of that of U238. A linear detection model was set up over the slowing down neutron energy to obtain each fissile material content. The isotopic fissile assay using LSDS is applicable for the optimum design of spent fuel storage to maximize burnup credit and quality assurance of the recycled nuclear material for safety and economics. LSDS technology will contribute to the transparency and credibility of pyro-process using spent fuel, as internationally demanded.

  • In the gamma-ray energy spectrum study, nuclide analysis through energy analysis is very important. High-purity Ge detectors, which are commonly used for gamma-ray energy measurements, are commonly used because of their high energy resolution and relatively high detection efficiency. However, in order to maintain a high energy resolution, the semiconductor detector has a problem in that it is difficult to maintain the original performance if the noise generated from the surrounding environment is not effectively blocked, and the effect of the expensive device is not achieved. Therefore, in this study, ground loop isolator (NEXT-001HDGL) was used to remove the electrical noise generated from the detector. In order to test the effect of improving energy resolution, HPGe detection device newly installed in the proton accelerator KOMAC was used. In the case of gamma-ray energy 2614 keV, the energy resolution was improved from (0.16 ± 0.02) % to (0.11 ± 0.01) %, and in the case of gamma-ray energy 662 keV of 137Cs isotope, the energy resolution was improved from (0.72 ± 0.07) % to (0.27 ± 0.03) %. This result is considered to be very useful for the gamma ray spectrum study using the HPGe detection equipment of KOMAC(Korea Multi-Purpose Accelerator Complex).

  • In this study, the radiation monitoring system using CsI(TI) scintillation counter is developed for the measurement of radiation distribution in the field of high dose level. When the inner diameter of collimator is 8 mm, we have realized the optimum detecting efficiency and spatial resolution. At that time, the position resolution was 10 cm at 1 m from the system. And experimental results indicated that the energy resolution of the system were 10 % for 662 keV of Cs-137, 7.6 % for 1.17 MeV of Co-60, and 5.8 % for 1.33 MeV of Co-60. Also, we have shown that the real radiation distribution images may be obtained by our measurement system.

  • In this article, we have designed SHA, which has 12 Bit resolution at an input signal range of 1 $V_{pp}$ and operates at a sampling speed of 100 MS/s in order to use at front of high speed ADC. SFDR(Spurious Free Dynamic Range) of the proposed system drops to approximately 66.3 dB resolution when the input frequency is 5 MHz, and the sampling frequency is 100 MHz, however, the circuit without a feedthrough has 12 bit resolution with approximately 73 dB.

  • This paper develops a 360 degree video system using multiple off-the-shelf webcams and a set of embedded boards. Existing 360 degree cameras have shortcomings that they do not support real-time video generation since recorded videos should be copied to computers or smartphones which then provide stitching. Another shortcoming is that wide FoV(Field of View) cameras are not able to provide sufficiently high resolution. Moreover, resulting images are visually distorted bending straight lines. By employing an array of 65 degree FoV webcams, we were able to generate videos on the spot and achieve over 6K resolution with much less distortion. We describe the configuration and algorithms of the proposed system. The performance evaluation results of our early stage prototype system are presented.
