  • The feeder cable assembly is an automotive part used for telecommunication. If it malfunctions, the control and safety of the automobile can be put at risk. ALT (Accelerated Life Testing) is a testing process for products in which they are subjected to conditions (stress, strain, temperatures, etc.) in excess of their normal service parameters in an attempt to uncover faults and potential modes of failure in a short amount of time. Failure is caused by defects in the design, process, quality, or application of the part, and these defects are the underlying causes of failure or which initiate a process leading to failure. Thermal shock occurs when a thermal gradient causes different parts of an object to expand by different amounts. Thermal shock testing is performed to determine the ability of parts and components to withstand sudden changes in temperature. In this research, the main causes of failure of the feeder cable assembly were snapping, shorting and electro-pressure resistance failure. Using the Coffin-Manson model for ALT, the normal conditions were from Tmax = $80^{\circ}C$ to Tmin = $-40^{\circ}C$, the accelerated testing conditions were from Tmax = $120^{\circ}C$ to Tmin = $-60^{\circ}C$, the AF (Acceleration Factor) was 2.25 and the testing time was reduced from 1,000 cycles to 444 cycles. Using the Bxlife test, the number of samples was 5, the required life was B0.04%.10years, in the acceleration condition, 747 cycles were obtained. After the thermal shock test under different conditions, the feeder cable assembly was examined by a network analyzer and compared with the Weibull distribution modulus parameter. The results obtained showed good results in acceleration life test mode. For the same reliability rate, the testing time was decreased by a quarter using ALT.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the mechanical properties of a cold-recycling asphalt mixture used as a base layer and to determine the optimum emulsified-asphalt content for ensuring the mixture's performance. METHODS : The physical properties (storage stability, mixability, and workability) of three types of asphalt emulsion (CMS-1h, CSS-1h, and CSS-1hp) were evaluated using the rotational viscosity test. Asphalt emulsion residues, prepared according to the ASTM D 7497-09 standard, were evaluated for their rheological properties, including the $G*/sin{\delta}$and the dynamic shear modulus (${\mid}G*{\mid}$). In addition, the Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength, and tensile-strength ratio (TSR) were evaluated for the cold-recycling asphalt mixtures fabricated according to the type and contents of the emulsified asphalt. RESULTS : The CSS-1hp was found to be superior to the other two types in terms of storage stability, mixability, and workability, and its $G*/sin{\delta}$ value at high temperatures was higher than that of the other two types. From the dynamic shear modulus test, the CSS-1hp was also found to be superior to the other two types, with respect to low-temperature cracking and rutting resistance. The mixture test indicated that the indirect tensile strength and TSR increased with the increasing emulsified-asphalt content. However, the mixtures with one-percent emulsified-asphalt content did not meet the national specification in terms of the aggregate coverage (over 50%) and the indirect tensile strength (more than 0.4 MPa). CONCLUSIONS : The emulsified-asphalt performance varied greatly, depending on the type of base material and modifying additives; therefore, it is considered that this will have a great effect on the performance of the cold-recycling asphalt pavement. As the emulsified-asphalt content increased, the strength change was significant. Therefore, it is desirable to apply the strength properties as a factor for determining the optimum emulsified-asphalt content in the mix design. The 1% emulsified-asphalt content did not satisfy the strength and aggregate coverage criteria suggested by national standards. Therefore, the minimum emulsified-asphalt content should be specified to secure the performance.

  • Due to the higher ratio of live load to total loads of railway bridges, the accumulated damage by cyclic fatigue is significant. Moreover, it is highly possible that the initiated crack grows faster than that of highway bridges. Therefore, it is strongly needed to assess the safety for the accumulated damage analytically. The initiation and growth of fatigue-crack are related with the stress range, number of cycles, and the stiffness of the structural system. The stiffness of the structural system includes uncertainties of the planning, design, construction and maintenance, which varies as time goes. In this study, the authors developed the design and risk assessment techniques based on the reliability theories considering the uncertainties in load and resistance. For the probabilistic risk assessment of crack growth and the remaining life of the structures by the cyclic load of railway and subway bridges, response surface method (RSM) combined with first order second moment method were used. For composing limit state function, the stress range, stress intensity factor and the remaining life were selected as input important random variables to the RSM program. The probabilities of failure and the reliability indices of fatigue life for the considered specimen under cyclic loads were evaluated and discussed.

  • Many crops including cereals, tuber crops, feeds, and turf grasses are often damaged by various environmental stresses such as drought, salt, cold, and high temperature, causing the reduction of their productivity. Plants are sessile and cannot escape from environmental stresses. Thus, plants evolve in the direction of overcoming the environmental stresses. Some plant genes such as ARF, ABI3, NAC, HSF, and WRKY are known to respond to environmental stresses as they transcriptionally regulate the stress response pathways. For example, the OsWRKY76 gene contributes to the enhanced resistance to low temperatures and pathogenic infections. The AtWRKY28 also plays a role in environmental stresses. Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) is popularly grown for gardens and golf courses. However, the function of the WRKY gene, another environmental stress-related gene, is not known in zoysiagrass. In this study, the ZjWRKY3 and ZjWRKY7 genes with one shared WRKY domain have been isolated in zoysiagrass. The expression of these genes increased in response to low temperature, drought, and salt stresses. Furthermore, the infection of the brown patch-causing Rhozoctonia solani induced the expression of ZjWRKY3 and ZjWRKY7. The corresponding proteins bind to the W-box of the Zjchi promoter, possibly regulating their transcriptions. The researchers suggest that the ZjWRKY3 and ZjWRKY7 genes transcriptionally regulate abiotic and biotic stress related downstream genes.

  • This study evaluates the physical mechanical properties, durability and sound absorbtion of porous concrete for pavement according to content of silica fume and steel fiber to elicit the presentation of data and the way to enhance its function for the practical field application of porous concrete as a material of pavement. The results of the test indicate that in every condition, the void ratio and the coefficient of water permeability of porous concrete for pavement satisfy both the domestic standards and proposition values. Among the properties of strength, the compressive strength satisfies the standards in the specification of Korea National Housing Corporation as for every factor of mixture but in the case of the flexural strength, more than 0.6vol.% of steel fiber satisfied the Japan Concrete Institute proposition values. The mixture of silica fume and steel fiber presents the excellent intensity, though. The case when silica fume and steel fiber are used simultaneously presents the strongest durability because the durability shows the similar tendency to the dynamic characteristics. The case when 10wt.% of silica fume and 0.6vol.% of steel fiber are used at the same time shows that the loss rate of mass by Cantabro test became 27% better and freeze-thaw resistance became 60% better. As for the characteristics of sound absorption of porous concrete for pavement, Noise Reduction Coefficient is 0.48 to prove that it possesses almost 50% sound absorption.

  • Murine encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) has been used as a surrogate for hepatitis A virus (HAV) for the validation of virus removal and/or inactivation during the manufacturing process of biopharmaceuticals. Recently international regulation for the validation of HAV safety has been reinforced because of the reported cases of HAV transmission to hemophiliac patients who had received ntihemophilic factors prepared from human plasma. The purpose of the present study was to compare the resistance of HAV and EMCV to various viral inactivation processes and then to standardize the HAV validation method. HAV was more resistant than EMCV to pasteurization (60oC heat treatment for 10 hr), low pH incubation (pH 3.9 at 25oC for 14 days), 0.1 M NaOH treatment, and lyophilization. EMCV was completely inactivated to undetectable levels within 2 hr of pasteurization, however, HAV was completely inactivated to undetectable levels after 5 hr treatment. EMCV was completely inactivated to undetectable levels within 15 min of 0.1 M NaOH treatment, however, residual infectivity of HAV still remained even after 120 min of treatment. The log reduction factors achieved during low pH incubation were 1.63 for HAV and 3.84 for EMCV. Also the log reduction factors achieved during a lyophilization process of antihemophilic factor VIII were 1.21 for HAV and 4.57 for EMCV. These results indicate that HAV rather than EMCV should be used for the virus validation study and the validation results obtained using EMCV should be precisely reviewed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the safety and rationality of buckling strength and length coefficient by comparing with the design standards of domestic and foreign compression materials based on the buckling test results of circular steel pipe with ball joints. The types of round steel pipes selected for buckling performance evaluation were ø$48.6{\times}2.8t$, ø$60.5{\times}3.2t$ and ø$76.3{\times}3.2t$. For the design of domestic and foreign compression materials, Korea 's Load Resistance and Factor Design, Japan' s Limit State Design, and British Standard BS5950 standard were applied. In this study, we compared and analyzed the buckling performance between the experimental results of the previous research and the domestic and foreign design standards. The results were summarized as follows. As a result of applying the full length of the member to the buckling length in the compression materials design standards of each country, it was 64-89% of the buckling strength by the experiment. Therefore, it is deemed desirable to perform the member design according to the current design standard formula for safety. Experimental results show that the measured buckling strength was 1.02-1.43 times higher than the buckling strength of pure cylindrical steel tubes in the design standards of Korea, Japan and the United Kingdom compression materials. Consequently, it seemed that the buckling strength of individual member in the design of space frame structure should be considered buckling coefficient as the length of pure round steel pipe rather than the length of inter-node.

  • Variations in photosynthetic capacities of leaves differing in thickness were explained on the basis of relationships between gas exchange and internal leaf structure. The relative importance of gas diffusion and of biochemical processes as limiting for leaf photosynthesis was also determined. Mesophyll cell surface was considered to be the limiting internal site for gas diffusion. and cell volume to be indicative of the sink capacity for CO$_2$ fixation. Increases in cell surface area were assumed to reduce proportionately mesophyll resistance to the liquid phase diffusion of CO$_2$. Increased cell volume was thought to account for a proportional increase in reaction rates for carboxylation, oxygenation. and dark respiration. This assumption was tested using chamber-grown Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Amsoy plants. Plants were grown under 200, 400, and 600 ${\mu}$mol photons m$\^$-2/ s$\^$-1/ of PAR to induce development of various leaf thickness. Photosynthetic CO$_2$ uptake rates were measured on the 3rd and 4th trifoliolate leaves under 1000 ${\mu}$mol photons m$\^$-2/ s$\^$-1/ of PAR and at the air temperature of 28 C. A pseudo -mechanistic photosynthesis model was modified to accommodate the concept of cell surface area as well as both cell volume and surface area. Both versions were used to simulate leaf photosynthesis. Computations based on volume and surface area showed slightly better agreement with experimental data than did those based on the surface area only. This implies that any single factor, whether it is photosynthetic model utilized in this study was suitable for relating leaf thickness to leaf productivity.

  • Obesity has been reported to be a cluster of risk factors in the pathological ecology, In particular, there is increasing evidence that inflammation-related factors are associated with diabetes. This study examined the relationship between the hs-CRP level and FBG, fructosamine, and $HbA_1c$ in 4,734 non-diabetic adults aged 20 years or older, who were approved by the National Health and Nutrition Survey in 2015. The results showed that the FBG, fructosamine, and $HbA_1c$ levels increased with increasing BMI; the hs-CRP levels were the highest in the obese group, and HOMA-IR, an index of insulin resistance, was also significantly higher in the obese group. The hs-CRP level was the highest in obese adults. The levels of FBG, fructosamine. and $HbA_1c$, which are involved in blood glucose control, increased with increasing hs-CRP level. The FBG, fructosamine, and $HbA_1c$ levels increased significantly with increasing hs-CRP level after adjusting for various related variables. These results suggest that the obesity-induced increase in hs-CRP is a risk factor for diabetes mellitus in non-diabetic adults. Therefore, proper dietary habits and regular exercise should prevent diabetes by preventing obesity in non-diabetic adults.
