A testing system has been developed to evaluate the seasonal variation of the resilient modulus of granular subgrade soils. Two sites were successfully instrumented with soil moisture-temperature cells to monitor over a period of one year, the field temperature and moisture content underneath the pavement. Multiple regression equations were developed to determine the resilient modulus under environmental conditions. It is noted that the use of the effective resilient modulus at the location of the Average Depth of Significant Stress (ADSS) provides a reasonable basis for determining subgrade properties. In addition, a theoretical model has been developed to predict the resilient modulus due to the change of temperature and moisture condition.
The use of a concrete track is gradually growing in urban and high-speed railways in many part of the world. The resilient pad, which is essentially when concrete tracks are used, plays the important role of relieving the impact caused by train loads. The simple fatigue test[1] to estimate the variable stiffness of resilient pads is usually performed, but it differs depending on the practical conditions of different railways. In this study, the static stiffness levels of used resilient pads according to passing tonnages levels were measured in laboratory tests. Also, the simple fatigue test and the multi-stress accelerated degradation test for new resilient pads were performed in a laboratory. The static stiffness of the used pad was compared with the results of tests of usage times and cycles. The results of the comparison showed that the variable static stiffness levels of the used pad were similar to results of the multi-stress accelerated degradation test considering the fatigue and heat load. With a T-NT equation related to the degree of the multi-stress accelerated degradation, a model of multi-stress accelerated degradation for a resilient pad was devised. It was found through this effort that the total acceleration factor was approximately 2.62. Finally, this study proposes an equation for a multi-stress accelerated degradation model for polyurethane resilient pads.

A method was developed to determine resilient modulus for crushed rock-soil mixtures whose usage has been increased recently without engineering specifications. The method is based on the subtle different modulus called nonlinear dynamic modulus and was lately implemented in residual soils and engineered crushed-stones. Hereby. the same method was expanded to crushed rock-soil mixtures containing as large grain diameter as 300mm. The method utilize field direct-arival tests for the determination of maximum Young's modulus, and a large scale free-free resonant column test, which is recently developed to is capable to test as large grain diameter as 25mm, for modulus reduction curves. The prediction model of resilient modulus was evaluated for crushed rock-soil mixtures of a highway construction site at Gimcheon, Korea.
The resilient modulus model of EPS geofoam to be used for a flexible pavement design was developed. In this study, the model was applied to design the flexible pavement and to predict the magnitude of the deformation of EPS geofoam blocks as a subgrade in the flexible pavement structure by using the resilient modulus model of EPS geofoam (RMEG) program. The RMEG program presented how much the EPS geofoam subgrade settled over the designed duration and the AASHTO flexible pavement design equation with the resilient modulus of EPS geofoam noted that how long the flexible pavement endured under traffic loads with 70% reliability for the estimated duration with less than 5mm vertical deformation during 20.6 years without the significant pavement distress as a substitute material for the natural soils.

Design and analysis of road subgrade system, which is exposed to repetitive loading condition, uses resilient modulus. The behavior of railway subgrade system will not be quite different from that of road system. Following this phenomenological feature of the subgrade system, this paper introduces the implementation of the resilient modulus based constitutive model on a commercial finite element software. The implementation of the resilient modulus models such as K-${\theta}$ and Uzan on a FE program has been conducted previously. These model assumes that the material state reaches to the nonlinear elastic condition and with further application of repetitive loads, the response of material is completed in elastic condition. According to the recent test results performed on cohesive subgrade soils, however, permanent deformation occurs with repetitive loads. With aids of previously suggested models the permanent deformation cannot be modeled. To overcome such limitation a plastic potential derived from the test results and simple failure criterion based constitutive model is developed. The comparison between the analysis and test results shows a good correlation.
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a type of geosynthetic material manufactured with various strengths, unit weights, and dimensions. Due to recent advances in research on EPS, the use of EPS has increased dramatically. This super light weight material has a unit weight of approximately $0.16{\sim}0.47kN/m^3$, equivalent to 6.3~15.7 of that of most natural soils with conditions of fill materials. In spite of this advantage, it is noted that no standard method of resilient modulus test on EPS geofoam was reported and no literature on resilient modulus test methods for EPS geofoam exist. The main object of this study was to investigate feasibility of the resilient modulus of EPS when it was applied for flexible pavement. The investigation of the feasibility was completed based on the results from triaxial tests.
Recently, floor impact sound has become a serious social problem in Korea. There is an increasing need to improve floor impact sound performance using floor covering installed on the floor of apartment houses. KS F ISO 717-2 and KS F 2863 require measurement under conditions in which the resilient material is not installed. But most apartment houses in Korea install resilient materials to reduce floor imapct sound. The performance evaluation method of floor covering should provide reduced performance for use by residents of apartment houses with resilient materials. Therefore, this paper proposes a reduction performance evaluation under the conditions in which a resilient material is installed to verify the performance of floor covering.

In general, under the repetitive dynamic load generated by rail cars running on the track, subgrade soil experiences changes of stress conditions such as deviatoric stress (${\sigma}_d$) and bulk stress (${\theta}$). Due to the repetitive change of deviatoric stress (${\sigma}_d$) with number of loadings, the resilient modulus ($M_R$) can be obtained by using the measured resilient strain (${\varepsilon}_r$) after a sufficient number of loadings. At present, no plausible and unified test method has been proposed to obtain the resilient modulus of railway track subgrade soil. In this study, a possible test method for obtaining the resilient modulus ($M_R$) of railway track subgrade soil is proposed; this test, by utilizing repetitive triaxial compression testing, can consider all the important parameters, such as the confining stress, deviatoric stress, and number of loadings. By adapting and using the proposed test method to obtain $M_R$, $M_R$ values for compacted track subgrade soil can be successfully determined using soil obtained in three field sites of railway track construction with changing water content range from OMC. In addition, shear modulus (G) ~ shear strain (${\gamma}$) relation data were also obtained using a mid-size RC test. A correlation analysis was performed using the obtained G and $M_R$ values while considering the strain levels and modes of strain direction.

The objective of this study was to identify the effect of engineering properties on the resilient modulus ($M_r$) of cohesive soils as subgrade. Eight representative cohesive soils representing A-6, and A-7-6 soil types collected from road construction sites, were tested in the laboratory to determine their basic engineering properties. The laboratory tests for the engineering properties were Atterberg limits test, sieve analysis, hydrometer test, Standard Proctor compaction test, and unconfined compressive strength test. Resilient modulus test and unconfined compressive strength test were conducted on unsaturated cohesive soils at three different moisture contents (dry of optimum moisture content, optimum moisture content, and wet of optimum moisture content). The increase in moisture content considerably affected the decrease in the resilient modulus. The resilient modulus increased with an increase in maximum unconfined compressive strength, percent of clay, percent of silt and clay, liquid limit and plasticity index. The resilient modulus decreased with an increase in percent of sand.
