  • The residue compounds of sulfuric acid-carbon fiber system were obtained from P100, M40, TZ307, and T300 fibers. The fibers which easily formed intercalation compound had small change of d002 value, but, large change of diameter of fiber. It was considered that the cracks in carbon fiber were due to the this conflicting result. The resistivities of residue compound of carbon fibers were increased with the large change of diameter of fibers. It is thought that the reason of our results is increasing defects such as crack in fibers. From the UV reflection spectra, it was found that reflectances of residue compounds were all decreased and the residue compounds were more stable than intercalation compounds.

  • Water glass (WG) and sodium sulfate (SS) were used to prepare polymeric aluminum chloride residue cement mortar (PACRM) by single and compound blending with polymeric aluminum chloride waste residue, respectively. The structural strength and textural characteristics examinations showed that PACRM consistency increased by incorporating WG, but decreased by incorporating SS. When WG and SS were compounded, the mortar consistency initially rose before falling. The compressive strength of PACRM increased and then decreased as WG was increased. The mechanical properties of PACRM were better enhanced by SS than WG, showing no strength deterioration. The main reason for the improved mechanical properties of polymeric aluminum chloride waste residue in the presence of activators is the increased precipitation of reactive substances, such as C-S-H gels, calcium silica, and Ca(OH)2. The density of the specimens with PACRM and the degree of aggregation of hydration products were significantly enhanced by generating more hydration products in the mortar. Further, the cracks and pores were significantly reduced, and the matrix structure was continuous and dense at 5% SS doping and 3% compound doping.

  • An Experimental study was carried out to develop a simple method of processing copper waste sludge which is produced by PBC manufacturing. The procedure is based on leaching of wet sludge in 2N H$_2$SO$_4$, and the solid / liquid ratio is controlled approximately at 1/10. The recovery of copper is 85.4%, and pH of the leachate is 3.20. Adding ammonia solution into leachate forms ammine, and hydroxide compounds derived from other impurities in leachate at pH 10. The hydroxide compound can be treated by ferrite process, and the product is a stable oxide compound. Then the ammine solution is heated to evaporate ammonia, and the copper hydroxide is formed. Heating at 8$0^{\circ}C$by aeration, copper hydroxide is transformed into copper oxide with a purity of 98.4%. This process can recover most copper from sludge and the residue can be stabilized by the formation of a stable oxide compound which is not hazardous to environment.

  • Various types of compounds were tested with the aspects of decomposition and formation of residue in a $CO_2$ or 7H$_2$+93$N_2$ atmosphere. The evaporation temperature range of each compound was determined from thermogravimetric curve. Decomposition of dicarbon amide, stearic acid, acrowax and zinc stearate was studied by thermogravimetry in $CO_2$ or in 7H$_2$+93$N_2$ atmosphere. All compounds were decomposed in $CO_2$ atmosphere at lower than 40$0^{\circ}C$, but the residue, ZnO remained for zinc stearate. ZnO did not decompose in $CO_2$ atmosphere up to 130$0^{\circ}C$, but reduced into Zn metal and disappeared in the temperature range of $600^{\circ}C$ to 120$0^{\circ}C$ in 7H$_2$+93$N_2$ atmosphere. The effect of residue, which trapped in closed pores of sintered pellet, on the thermal stability was studied using the resintering test at 1$700^{\circ}C$ in 7H$_2$+93$N_2$ atmosphere. In the case of oxidative sintered pellet with admixing zinc stearate, the cavity formation accompanied with a density drop after resintering is due to the pressure of the Zn gases trapped in the isolated pores.

  • To evaluate the possible utilization of ginseng by-products, chemical components of ginseng residue, reducing ability of DPPH, effect of residue extract on the yeast growth, amino acid contents of yeast cell, increase of residue extract yield by enzyme treatment were studied. Alcohol and water extract residue contained 43-46% total reducing sugar and 14-15% crude protein, while alcohol extract residue had 0.18% n-BuOH extract. Water extract of alcohol extract residue had about 45% reducing ability of DPPH in comparison with that of alcohol extract from ginseng roots. Essential nutrients for the yeast growth were found in extract when Saccharomyces cerevisiae was cultured in Czapeck medium, a compound medium, with the residue. The addition of residue extract to malt medium, a natural medium, enhanced 30-40% yeast growth. And content of each amino acid in yeast cell cultured on malt medium with ginseng residue extract was much more than that of the cell cultured without ginseng extract, but amino acid composition of yeast cell did not differ from one another. The treatment of alcohol extract residue with cellulase increased 250% yield of residue extract.

  • In order to study the role of residue in the active site of glutathione S-transferase (GST), Arg13 residue in human GST P1-1 was replaced with alanine, lysine and leucine by site-directed mutagenesis to obtain mutants R13A, R13K and R13L. These three mutant enzymes were expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to electrophoretic homogeneity by affinity chromatography on immobilized GSH. Mutation of Arg13 into Ala caused a substantial reduction of the specific activity by 10-fold. Km GSH, Km DCNB and Km EPNP values of R13A were approximately 2-3 fold larger than those of the wild type. Mutation of Arg13 into Ala also significantly affected I50 values of S-methyl-GSH that compete with GSH and ethacrynic acid, an electrophilic substrate-like compound. These results appeared that the substitution of Arg13 with Ala resulted in significant structural change of the active site. Mutation of Arg13 into Leu reduced the catalytic activity by approximately 2-fold, whereas substitution by Lys scarcely affected the activity, indicating the significance of a positively charged residue at position 13. Therefore, arginine 13 participates in catalytic activity as mainly involved in the construction of the proper electrostatic field and conformation of the active site in human GST P1-1.

  • In order to study the role of residue in the active site of glutathione S-transferase (GST), Tyr 108 residue in human GST P1-1 was replaced with alanine, phenylalanine and tryptophan by site-directed mutagenesis to obtain mutants Y108A, Y108F and Y108W. These three mutant enzymes were expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to electrophoretic homogeneity by affinity chromatography on immobilized GSH. The substitutions of Tyr108 significantly affected $K_m^{CDNB}$ and $K_m^{ETA}$, whereas scarcely affected $K_m^{GSH}$. The substitutions of Tyr108 also significantly affected $I_{50}$ of ETA, an electrophilic substrate-like compound. The effect of these substitutions on kinetic parameters and the response to inhibition suggests that tyrosine 108 in hGST P1-1 contributes to the binding of the electrophilic substrate and a major determinant in the binding of CDNB is the aromatic ring of Tyr108, not its hydroxyl group.

  • Thermal behavior and $O_{2}$ plasma effects on residue and penetrated impurities formed by reactive ion etching (RIE) in CHF$_{3}$/C$_{2}$F$_{6}$ have been investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) techniques. Decomposition of polymer residue film begins between 200-300.deg. C, and above 400.deg. C carbon compound as graphite mainly forms by in-situ resistive heating. It reveals that thermal decomposition of residue can be completed by rapid thermal anneal above 800.deg. C under nitrogen atmosphere and out-diffusion of penetrated impurities is observed. The residue layer has been removed with $O_{2}$ plasma exposure of etched silicon and its chemical bonding states have been changed into F-O, C-O etc.. And $O_{2}$ plasma exposure results in the decrease of penetrated impurities.
