Residual life evaluation of pressurizer surge line nozzle in nuclear plant (원자력발전소 가압기 밀림관 노즐의 잔존 피로수명평가)

  • The procedure for the determination of the residual life of the pressurizer surge line nozzle in the nuclear plant is developed. The design fatigue life for the 1800 $ft^3$ pressurizer surge line nozzle in cast head design is compared with that of Westinghouse stress report, and the percentage difference between two results is less than 9%. The design fatigue life evaluation of the 1000 $ft^3$ pressurizer surge line nozzle in fabricated head design is carried out, and the consuming rate and residual life are estimated using the operating data.

Prediction Model for Relaxation of Welding Residual Stress under Fatigue Loads (피로하중하 용접잔류응력 이완 추정모델)

  • The strength and the life of welded components are affected extensively by the residual stresses distributed around their weldments not only under static loads, but also fatigue loads. The residual stress can be superimposed with externally applied loads, so that unexpected deformations and failures of members will be occurred. These residual stresses are not kept constant, but relaxed or redistributed during in service. Under static loads the relaxation takes place when the external stress superimposed with the residual stress exceeds locally the yield stress of material used. It is shown that under fatigue loads the residual stress is considerably relieved by the first or flew cycle loading, and then gradually relaxed with increasing loading cycles. In this study the phenomenon and mechanism of the stress relaxation by mechanical means were investigated and a model to predict quantitatively the residual stress relaxation for the case of static and fatigue loading condition was proposed.

  • Break-in is an intentional treatment to enhance the performance life of machinery parts and to maintain static friction behavior. Most studies on break-in have concerned only about surface conditions such as roughness or film formation. But the exact mechanism of break-in has not been found yet. Friction, scuffing behavior and wear of AISI 1045 were studied in relation to break-in and residual stress. The cylinder-on-disk type tribometer was used with the line-contact geometry. Scuffing tests were carried out using a constant load of 730N. In the break-in procedure the step load was applied from 100N to 200N. In this experiment, it was found that the break-in helps compressive residual stress to be formed well enough to enhance the scuffing life during the scuffing test. Specimens that had high compressive residual stress induced by shot-peening show better wear resistance than those were not shot-peened. Results of scuffing test, break-in procedure and wear amount in relation to residual stress have been discussed.

  • To evaluate the fatigue lives of welded joints taking into residual stress relaxation, two approaches are applied. One is based on the conventional local strain analyses. The other is based on a model developed by the authors. In the first approach, the Ramberg-Osgood relation, Lawrence model and S.W.T. parameter are used. In the second approach, The S-N curve for a welded joint is deduced from that of the parent material. Residual stress relaxation obtained by finite element analysis is considered. Finally, we evaluate the fatigue lives for four weld details using the two approaches.

  • The influence of the fatigue crack propagation by shot peening was studied in this paper. Fatigue tests were carried out on the unpeened and shot peened CT specimens. The changes of mechanical properties, residual stress, fatigue fracture surface etc. by shot peening were investigated. The mechanical properties, residual stress, fatigue surface etc. by shot peening were investigated. The mechanical peened specimen improved in fatigue life up to 14% by shot peening. The reason of increase in the fatigue life was closely related with the compressive residual stress, which was 519.7MPa on surface. Another reason was the constraint on crack opening on surface region, it is due to the decrease in slope of crack propagation direction.

The Improvement of Fatigue Properties by 2-step Shot Peening (2단쇼트피닝에 의한 피로특성의 향상)

  • In this study, to investigate the effects of 2-step shot peening at the surface of spring steel, tests are conducted on spring steel and shot peened specimens. Various tests are accomplished to evaluate mechanical properties influenced by shot peening process, and fatigue tests are also performed to evaluate the improvement of fatigue strength. And then the residual stresses are examined. The mechanical properties of material did not change so much by shot peening. However, the fatigue strength of notched specimen remarkably increased. In the case of 1-step shot peening, fatigue strength increased by about 20% than unpeened specimen. Especially, in the case of 2-step shot peening, fatigue strength increased by about 40%, because the residual compressive stress at surface was higher than that of 1-step shot peened specimen. The fatigue strength and life are closely related to the value and position of maximum compressive residual stress by shot peening.

  • In the survivla analysis the problem of estimating mean residual life function (MRLF) under random censoring is very important. In this paper we propose and study a nonparametric estimator of MRLF, which is a functional form based on the estimator of the survival function due to Susarla and Van Ryzin (1980). The proposed estimator is shown to be better than some other estimators in terms of mean square errors for the exponential and Weibull cases via Monte Carlo simulation studies.

  • The influence of shot peening on the fatigue strength of SCM22 steel is investigated in this work. The shot peening process is applied to the heat treated specimens. Then, basic material properties and residual stresses are evaluated for specimens. Rotate bending and torsional fatigue tests are accomplished to investigate the effects of shot peening on the fatigue strength. experimental results show that the fatigue life was increased tremendously by shot peening. The compressive residual stress, which is induced by shot peening process, seems to be an important factor of increasing the fatigue strength.

  • This is primarily an expository paper that presents several nonparametric procedures for testing exponentiality against certain monotonicity properties of the mean residual life function, tests against the trend change in such function attract a great deal of attention of late in reliability analysis. In this note, we present some of the known testing procedures regarding the behavior of mean residual life function. These tests are also compared in terms of asymptotic relative efficiency and empirical power against a few alternatives. The tests based on incomplete data are also briefly discussed.

A Modified Test for the Hollander and Proschan's Test Against Decreasing Mean Residual Life Alternatives

  • In this paper we develop a test for alternatives representing decreasing mean residual life. The test statistic for decreasing mean residual life, $K_{1n}$, is a modified version of Hollander and Proschan's test $V^*$ and critical constants and large sample approximation are shown to make the test readily applicable. Consistency is also shown for the tests based on $K_{1n}$. And small sample powers for four alernatives are obtained.
