  • Use of aluminum salts as coagulants In water treatment may lead to increased concentrations of aluminum in finished water. Aluminum is a suspected causative agent of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. The objective of this study was to examine variation and minimizing in residual aluminum concentration during water treatment process. The aluminum sources at Bokjeong Water Plant were present naturally aluminum in the raw water and derived due to use of PACS as a coagulant. Much of the raw water total aluminum were in particulate and suspended aluminum. In this study was compared the optimize condition to minimize the concentration of residual aluminum using Jar-test with the various coagulants such as alum, PAC, PACS. The results indicated that PACS was more effective than alum, PAC and insufficient or excessive alum, PAC, PACS addition led to increase residual aluminum. Adjustment raw water pH $6.5\~7.0$ before coagulation using PACS was capable of minimizing total and dissolved aluminum. Thus it is important that the optimal dosage of coagulant and the optimal pH adjustment before coagulation can decided to minimize the concentration of residual aluminum in treated water.

  • Break-in is an intentional treatment to enhance the performance life of machinery parts and to maintain static friction behavior. Most studies on break-in have concerned only about surface conditions such as roughness or film formation. But the exact mechanism of break-in has not been found yet. Friction, scuffing behavior and wear of AISI 1045 were studied in relation to break-in and residual stress. The cylinder-on-disk type tribometer was used with the line-contact geometry. Scuffing tests were carried out using a constant load of 730N. In the break-in procedure the step load was applied from 100N to 200N. In this experiment, it was found that the break-in helps compressive residual stress to be formed well enough to enhance the scuffing life during the scuffing test. Specimens that had high compressive residual stress induced by shot-peening show better wear resistance than those were not shot-peened. Results of scuffing test, break-in procedure and wear amount in relation to residual stress have been discussed.

  • MEMS structures generally have been fabricated using surface-machining method, but the interface failure between silicon substrate and evaporated thin film frequently takes place due to the residual stress inducing by the applied the various loads. And the very important physical property in the heated environment is the linear coefficient of thermal expansion. Therefore this paper studied the residual stress caused the thermal loads in the thin film and introduced the simple method to measure the trend of the residual stress by the indentation. Specimens were made of materials such as Al, Au and Cu and thermal load was applied repeatedly. The residual stress was measured by nano-indentation using AFM and FEA. The existence of the residual stress due to thermal load was verified by the experimental results. The indentation length of the thermal loaded specimens increased minimum 11.8% comparing with the virgin thin film caused by tensile residual stress. The finite element analysis results are similar to indentation test.

  • Since the ceramic/metal joint material is made at a high temperature, the residual stress development when it is cooled from bonding temperature to room temperature due to remarkable difference of thermal expansion coefficient between ceramic and metal. As residual stress at ceramic/metal joints influences the strength of joints, it is important to estimate residual stress quantitatively. In this study, it is attempted to estimate joint residual stress of $Si_3N_4/STS304$ joints quantitatively and to compare the strength of Joints. The difference of residual stress is measured when repeated thermal cycle is loaded under the conditions of the practical use of the ceramic/metal joint. And 4-point bending test is performed to examine the influence of residual stress on fracture strength. As a residual it is known that the stress of joint decreases as the number of thermal cycle increases.

  • The transverse crack, a type of cold crack, occurs perpendicular to the axis of the weld interface, longitudinal residual stresses ($\sigma$k direction) are more important in transverse crack occurrence from my own experience. Specimens were fabricated and welded under actual construction conditions, and then residual stresses of longitudinal stresses were measured for different welding conditions with SAW and FCAW process. The residual stress values for the specimen welded Interpass temperature below 30$^{\circ}C$ was higher than the specimen welded interpass temperature of 100~120$^{\circ}C$. And also the residual stress values for a specimen measured at weld surface, as welded condition, was higher than that of longitudinal residual stresses that was measured from a small test piece, due to the residual stress was relieved in the process of the cutting and machining. Transverse weld cracks were detected in the area of the maximum residual stresses both SAW and FCAW process.

  • The tribological performance of A1$_2$O$_3$/NiCr coating deposited on steel (SH45C) was investigated under lubrication. The parameters of sliding wear consist of normal load and coating thickness. Test result showed that there was no evidence of an improved bonding strength in the coating. However, the wear resistance of the A1$_2$O$_3$/NiCr coaling was significantly greater than that of the Al$_2$O$_3$ coating. It was eviclent that the residual stress for the A1$_2$O$_3$coating was higher than that of the A1$_2$O$_3$/NiCr coating from the Scratch test failure of coating. The bond coating played an important role in decreasing the residual stress. Also, it was found that the residual stress had d notable influence on the wear mechanism.

  • The release of residual stress by mechanical loading and unloading is often performed in the fabrication of box structure fur steel bridge. The proper degree of loading and unloading is significant at release method of residual stress by mechanical loading because that degree is changed by material and geometric shape of welded structure. Therefore, the simulation model that could exactly analyze the release of residual stress by mechanical loading is to be necessary. In this study, the non-linear behavior of weldments under external loading and unloading, such as the decrease and increase of structure stiffness, was investigated by monitoring of nominal stress and strain. Tensile loading and unloading test and the proper degree of stress relaxation was measured by sectioning technique using strain gauge. Analysis model that is indispensable for the effective application of MSR method was established on the basis of test and measurement result.

  • An analysis using FEM simulation was conducted to predict residual stresses and birefringence in simple compressed cylindrical glass as a preliminary part of the optimum design determination of optical lenses. The FEM simulation with the Maxwell viscoelastic constitutive model was used to predict thermal induced residual stresses and birefringence during the compression test considering stress relaxation. Also the linear photoelastic theory was introduced to calculate birefringence from the residual stress state. The simulation results were in good agreement with deformation and birefringence distribution in the existing experimental result.

  • This paper describes the fault detection and failsafe logic to be used in an Electronic Stability Program(ESP). The aim of this paper is to prevent of erroneous controls in the ESP. Developed this paper introduces the fault detection logic and evaluation of residual signals. The failsafe logic consists of four redundant sub-models, which can be used for detecting the faults in various sensors (yaw rate, lateral acceleration, steering wheel angle). We present two mathematical residual generation methods : one is a method using the average value and the other is a method using the minimum value of the each residual. We verified a failsafe logic developed using vehicle test results also we compare vehicle model based simulation results with test vehicle results.
