  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SUP9) which was used in suspension of automobile for room temperature and low temperature service. We got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room temperature and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, 3$0^{\circ}C$, 5$0^{\circ}C$, 7$0^{\circ}C$ and 10$0^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range ΔKth in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I) and stress intensity factor range ΔK in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was decreased in proportion to descend temperature. It is assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature and high temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.

  • This describes thermal crack creation process in automotive disks. Thermal cracks have been serious defects which induced disastrous accidents during traveling. The thermal cracks must be regularly eye-inspected. The cracks have been experimentally analysed; but they were not reported by analytic means yet. This paper proposed thermal crack creation process by a computer simulation which enlightened how to investigate thermal crack by cheap means. We explained the disk thermal crack creation and calculated stress intensity factor of an assumed surface crack in an automotive disk.

  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SUP9) processed shot peening which was room temperature and low temperature experiment. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room temperature and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, $-30^{\circ}C$, $-50^{\circ}C$, $-70^{\circ}C$,$-100^{\circ}C$, and $-150^{\circ}C$, in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range ΔKth in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I)was increased but stress intensity factor range ΔK in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was decreased in proportion to decrease temperature. • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SPS5) processed shot peening. The fatigue crack growth tests were carried out in the environment of the room temperature md low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, $-30^{\circ}C$, $-50^{\circ}C$, $-70^{\circ}C$ $-100^{\circ}C$ and $-150^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range ΔKth in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I) and stress intensity factor range $\Delta$K in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) were decreased in proportion to descend temperature. It was shown that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature are considerable higher than those of mom temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.

  • The effect of heat treatment on the fatigue crack growth behavior in welded joints between the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of SA 508 Cl.3 low-alloy steel and HAZ of AISI 316L stainless steel is investigated. When the crack propagates across SA 508 Cl.3 or AISI 316L SS and HAZ into the weldment, the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) in the HAZ region does not change or decrease despite the increase in stress intensity factor ${\Delta}K$. The residual stress at the HAZ region is more compressive than that at the base Δ materials and weldment. The effect of the welding residual stress on the crack growth behavior is determined by performing a residual stress relief heat treatment at $650^{\circ}C$ for 1h and subsequent furnace cooling. The FCG behavior in the HAZ region in the as-welded specimen and the residual stress relief heat-treated specimen is discussed in terms of the welding residual stress.

  • In this study, the harmless crack size(ahml) according to the residual stress depth was evaluated using the fatigue limit of SCM440 steel by quenching-tempering(QT) and induction hardening(IH), and threshold stress intensity factor of QT steel. Because the residual stress increased rapidly as the crack depth increased, ahml was determined at the depth of all the crack aspect ratio(As) regardless of Type I-III, and ahml also increased according to the residual stress depth. ahml was minimal at As=1.0 and maximal at As=0.1, but was almost similar on each Type. ahml was small the dependence on As.

  • For the purpose of healing the degradation part, $CO_2$ laser beam was irradiated with different irradiation condition (porer, diameter, velocity and beam type) to find out optimum irradiation condition. The test series of hardness, residual stress measurement, and fatigue were carried out after the irradiation. Experimental results show that micro-hardness values on the surface of the irradiated specimens m approximately 2.5 times higher than those of un-irradiated ones. Fatigue tests show that the fatigue life was improved by the compressive residual stress after laser beam irradiation. However, some specimens with different conditions show the shorter fatigue life. It means that laser beam irradiation with optimum irradiation condition and optimum absorb energy, Q can improve the fatigue strength.

  • A fracture mechanics analysis methodology for stress corrosion cracks (SCCs) existing in the Alloy 600 nozzle weld joint for control rod drive mechanisms (CRDMs) of pressurized water reactor is studied. Effects of weld residual stresses on the sub-critical crack behavior during the reactor operation are investigated by a fracture mechanics analysis, which is combined with the finite element alternating method. It is found that effects f the residual stresses on the stress intensity factor (SIF) and crack growth rate (CGR) are dominant and values of SIF and CGR of cracks in the region of weld joint are increased by a factor of three or more on an average.

  • The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular, fatigue failure phenomena, which happen in metal, bring on danger in human life and property. Therefore, antifatigue failure technology takes an important part of current industries. Currently, the shot peening is used for removing the defects from the surface of steel and improving the fatigue strength on surface. Therefore, in this paper the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9)by shot peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in stress ratio(R=0 1, R=0 3, R=0 6)was investigated considering fracture mechanics. By using the methods mentioned above, I arrived at the following conclusions: (1) The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the shot peening material was lower than the unpeening material And in stage I, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, the threshold stress intensity factor, of the shot peening material is high in critical parts unlike the unpeening material. (2) Fatigue life shows more Improvement in the shot peening material than in the unpeening material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the shot peening processed operate the resistance of fatigue crack propagation.

  • The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industries is requiring high strength of components. Therefore this requirement is accomplished as the process of shot-peening method that the compressive residual stress is made on the metal surface as one of various improvement methods. Special research is, therefore, needed about compressive residual stress on the metal surface in the process of shot-peening method. Therefore, in this paper the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in environmental condition(temperature) and mechanical condition(shot velocity, stress ratio) was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. By using the methods mentioned above, the following conclusions have been drawn. (1) The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the shot-peened material was lower than that of the un-peened one. In high temperature range. fatigue crack growth rate decreased with increasing temperature range, while fatigue crack growth rate increased by decreasing temperature in low temperature. (2) Fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot-peened material than in the un-peened material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the shot-peen processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation.
