The purpose of this study is to analyze the expression method according to the planning of townhouse and the healing method that affects residents for communicating with natural environment, in order to propose resident-focused communication with nature for healing. The results are as follows. First, the expression of nature elements can be divided into 'direct' and 'indirect' and healing effects through nature can be divided into 'body' and 'psychology'. The healing method of residents through nature was classified into physical and psychological healing through openness, familiarity, comfort, and stability. Second, as an expression method according to townhouse planning, the arrangement plan induced active communication with nature through the arrangement according to topography and a common garden. In terms of construction plan, a bigger window or door than that of other residential spaces was installed on a wall, ceiling or opening to directly bring the nature of outside visually for more communication. Third, with regard to healing methods of townhouse, 'openness' which reduces depression and increases self-esteem, expands the view of residents. 'Familiarity', the healing method that can relieve the fatigue of eyes and bring psychological warmth and comfort, makes us feel familiar through the pattern and texture of woods and stones that are natural materials. 'Comfort' which heals residents by creating an outside space and bringing the nature elements through a huge window can provide psychological healing such as eased tension in daily life as well as physical healing such as vitamin D synthesis and the recovery of physiological function. Also, 'Stability' gives a comfortable feeling by applying the colors of finishing materials inside or seeing the colors of surrounding nature as it is through big windows. Finally, in order to support the results of this study more objectively, a follow-up study conducting a survey on the residents of townhouse is needed.
Purpose of this study is to classify the main industrial function by region using the factor analysis. Identified regions, Yesan-Kun area consisted of 12 Myon(towns) selected as a case study, would be conducive to establishing rural town planning reflecting their industrial characteristics. Major findings are summarized as follows. First, population of Yesan-Kun has been decreased at about 1.0% annually for the period 1970~1990, which may not meet the basic condition of sustainable regional growth. Second, economy of Yesan area, which mainly has been dependent upon the agriculture, are lagged behind because of lack of specialized manufacturing sector. Third, particularly West and East part of the region has been underdeveloped in spite of their potentiality mainly due to insufficient network of road. Based on fator analysis which classify the zones by the characteristics of industry, following developmental directions are suggested. - Yesan-Eup with a factor score of 2.85 in secondary and tertiary industry, which means functioning as a rural center should be developed to provide the residential people with basic service. - Ducksan-Myon with 2.93 factor score in tour industry is recommended to formulate leisure complex by utilizing its abundant tour resources. - Sapkyo-Eup, Goduck-Myon, Sinam-Myon, Oga-Myon Areas functioning as agricultural industry, are suggested to foster as zones specialized for the cultivation of crops and fruits. - Kwangsi-Myon and Bongsan-Myon neighboring other counties is likely to be affected by other regions' economy. These regions should be developed in association with other regions' economic circumstances. - Daeheung-Myon, Daesool-Myon and Sinyang-Myon areas, which are located southern part of Yesan County, is examined to be relatively underdeveloped area. So there are needs to make a special planning for the balanced growth of these regions.
The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the compositional elements of plan of art museums by selecting architectural works, which have strong symbolic meaning when evaluating value, from architectural works by Louis Kahn. First, the centrality of artworks, which are being displayed at the Yale Art Gallery, is complex. It includes three patterns of Void (spatial) Centrality+Symbolic Centrality+Functional Centrality among the five patterns suggested in this study. Second, the ratio system of interior space, which is expressed in the extension of the Yale Art Gallery, can be classified into the floor and walls. The floor used the square 1:1 ratio system. The ceiling used the grid patterns of equilateral triangles (regular tetrahedrons). It was applying a geometric ratio system when creating forms by using one side as a beam and the other sides as decorations of the ceiling. Third, the contours of interior space, which were expressed in Kahn's works, used the method of forming separate space according to the contouring rule (structural unit) defined by columns, and they were used in constructing the entire space through the integration of separate spaces. Fourth, according to the characteristics that were expressed by artworks displayed within the Yale Art Gallery Extension, the concept of accessibility was not as clear as that of residential buildings, because an approach of respecting existing architecture and context was used, rather than the starting point of interior space, or differentiated circulation, which has the function of a determined position.

Carlos Jimenez's 'House and Studio' was self-designed to fully function as both a home and workplace. Since its establishment in 1983, the installation has been continuously updated for almost 30 years solely under the guidance of the owner's life occurrences and routine needs. The additions and alterations succeeding the building's erection were executed to incorporate small yet symbolic fragments of the resident's memories and life episodes. The particularity of the 'House and Studio' can be compared with other residential remodeling and expansion projects in regards to certain key aspects. These means of comparison include, but are not limited to, building strictly under the direction of a master plan of development vs. allowing natural adaptations that comply with the resident's needs, rapid development vs. gradual advancement, the ornamenting by exposing showy features vs. the enhancing by addition of modest natural components, sustainability vs. sustenance, systematic room divisions vs. ambiguous spatial organization, possession as a materialized asset vs. preservation as a recollection of memories, and finally the recognition as one example of signature architecture vs. the witnessing of a maturing animated shelter. The given propositions can be further explained with the comprehension of Erich Fromm's theory of the 'Having' mode and 'Being' mode, two mechanisms that categorize the essence of human life. The 'Having' mode is described by the human greed for wealth, power, and influence, whereas the 'Being' mode is comprised of compassion, joy, and productivity. Fromm's thesis applies to the general sense of human life, but the ideas can be narrowed to accommodate the architectural standpoint. In architecture, the 'Having' mode can be translated to be the conspicuous form-oriented and self-contained object. The 'Being' mode, on the other hand, is transposed as the more natural form, incorporating the needs of the owner before commercialization. The growth of Jimenez's 'House and Studio' can be perceived as an architectural suggestion to the overcoming of human indifference caused by fixation on the 'Having' mode.
This is the urban design master plan for the Public Administration Town. The project proposes a newly configured city, where environmental and democratic principles are expressed in the shape of the urban fabric. To achieve the goal, the concepts of 'Flat City, Link City, and Zero City' were introduced. These concept show "Space fabric arrange, connection and material circulation and flow from ecological landscape". 'Flat City' shaped the government buildings into an iconic plane, and democratic society. The iconic plane's surface extends across the whole city, creating an expansive public park, which is easily accessible, and open to nature. 'Link City' connects governmental agencies to enhance their function and interactions. Government facilities, parks and green spaces, cultural facilities, commercial zones, and residential districts areas create an interconnecting network. This proposal was made to integrate historical, regional, nature experiences with various approaches in architecture, city, and landscape architecture.
People in tropics have the ability to tolerate heat by residential permanence in the tropics. Previously, we have shown that African and Thai subjects who lived for whole their lives in only their respective countries sweat less under hot conditions than South Koreans who also lived whole their lives in Korea. The difference in sweating responses was attributed to the dissimilar central and peripheral sweating mechanisms operating in people from both groups. In the present study, acetylcholine (ACh), the primary transmitter for the sudomotor functions, was iontophoretically administered to South Koreans and Africans to determine the characteristic sudorific responses of their acclimatized biologic make-up to their respective environments. Using quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test (QSART), direct (DIR) and axon reflex (AXR) responses were evaluated. The findings revealed that the sweat onset-time among South Koreans was 0.91 min earlier than among Africans (P<0.01). The axon reflex sweat volume of nicotine receptor activity AXR(1) and sweat volume of muscarinic receptor activity DIR(2) among South Koreans were 79% and 53% greater (P<0.01), respectively. These results indicate that the reduced thermal sweating among Africans is at least in part attributed to the diminished sensitivity of sweat glands to ACh.

This study is practically focussed on the derivation of the formula of the reach of the catchment of urban community parks and the reached distance to the parks. The hypotheses for the formula are as follows. a. The catchment of urban community parks can be dependent on the quantitative characteristics that urban community parks have substanial factors : the potential residential population of the proximate community to a park, park visitor's day and mean usetime per year. b. The distance to the urban park is a decided variable which can be percieved quantitatively by the researchers among the exogenous variables concerned with the mean usetime of the urban community park. The data for the variables were collected from the statistics, and the surveys for 9 parks of 4cities(Seoul, Chong-ju, Su-Won, Chon-an) in Korea, which were divided into on-site samples and off-site ones in 1991. The data were collected by questionaire surveys. A total of 548 questionaires of off-site surveys were completed by the residents in the enticing area of the parks. A total of 1053 questionaires of on-site surveys were completed by the visitors of the parks. The research could attempt to derive a formula, which was concerned with the reach of the catchment of urban community parks and the reached distance to the parks. It is testified(R2>0.8) that the numbers of mean usetime per year should be related with the reached distance from a visitor's house to a proximate park. The formula is analogized with an exponential function: {{{{ Mean Usetime per year=f(x)=Ae-BK+Ce-DK ear, X is reached distance from a visitor's house to a proximate park. A,B,C and D are parameters. And, the differences of the reach of the catchment of the parks are not only testified with resulting from the differences of the exogenous variables of qualitative characteristics differences of the parks, but also divided separately into spatial ranges. This formula will be able to anticipate the visitor's numbers of a planned urban community park.
The purpose of this study is to find out to meaning and practical use of 'Anbang' of which unique roles and function has not been changed till now since Chosun dynasty. The Study has been carried out by selecting 27 novels in which the word 'Anbang' mentioned frequently and analyzing the sentences with 'Anbang' . The major finding were summarized as follows: 1. Since Chosun dynasty till now, 'Anbang' in most important space for Korean in residential area its meaning and practical use had not been changed. 2. The meaning of Anbang could be categorized into two parts; One was general symbolic meaning which was perceived mentally in general and the other was specific symbolic meaning which was varied by uses. In case of general symbolic meaning 'Anbang' implied a space with light turned on late at night, a very special space from the point of interior decoration and size, a space to keep very important stuffs and a space to deal with very important business. In case of specific symbolic meaning during Chosun dynasty, 'Anbang' was used as a pronoun to imply a mistress as major occupant was a mistress. Since then, gradually, 'Anbang' was used as a pronoun to imply married couple as married couple becomes major occupant. 3. The practical use of 'Anbang' cold be categorized into two; One was routine usage and the other was exceptional usage. The typical routine use were sleeping, dining family gathering, visitor greeting, clothes changing and sewing. The exceptional use were a Sebae(new year's bow), Pyebaek(make a deep bow and offer her gifts to her parents-in-law) and patient curing.
Objectives: To evaluate the risk of fractures related with zolpidem in elderly insomnia patients. Methods: Health claims data on the entire South Korean elderly population from January 2005 to June 2006 were extracted from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database. We applied a case-crossover design. Cases were defined as insomnia patients who had a fracture diagnosis. We set the hazard period of 1 day length prior to the fracture date and four control periods of the same length at 5, 10, 15, and 20 weeks prior to the fracture date. Time independent confounding factors such as age, gender, lifestyle, cognitive function level, mobility, socioeconomic status, residential environment, and comorbidity could be controlled using the case-crossover design. Time dependent confounding factors, especially co-medication of patients during the study period, were adjusted by conditional logistic regression analysis. The odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated for the risk of fracture related to zolpidem. Results: One thousand five hundred and eight cases of fracture were detected in insomnia patients during the study period. In our data, the use of zolpidem increased the risk of fracture significantly (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.72; 95% CI, 1.37 to 2.16). However, the association between benzodiazepine hypnotics and the risk of fracture was not statistically significant (aOR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.83 to 1.21). Likewise, the results were not statistically significant in stratified analysis with each benzodiazepine generic subgroup. Conclusions: Zolpidem could increase the risk of fracture in elderly insomnia patients. Therefore zolpidem should be prescribed carefully and the elderly should be provided with sufficient patient education.

With the increased interest on quiescent place for residential place, the noise generation from facilities needs to be minimized. One important noise source include sounds from operation of elevators. The elevator operates between floors and generates significantly annoying sounds to the nearby living spaces. It is recognized as the significant contributor inducing noise annoyance to residents. Elevator is supported to the building structure at several locations for movements between floors. In this study, the vibration reduction by use of polymer concrete on the support location was demonstrated. By measuring and comparing the vibration generation when supported on cement and polymer concrete, the noise reduction performance was evaluated. The polymer concrete was made in the form of being inserted into the wall that imitates the hoistway. The impact vibration was induced to the bracket and vibration transfer magnitude was measured. The damping ratio was evaluated through normalization and curve fitting of transient response, and comparison was performed for each resin mixing ratio. By use of polymer concrete, it was possible to reduce the vibration generation in an effect manner without sacrifice on the structural rigidity.
